[Bug 1384249] [NEW] Display settings are not saved after reboot

2014-10-22 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Clean Ubuntu GNOME install of 14.04.

Two displays connected - an DVI FHD monitor + HDMI HD TV
When settings up mirror displays everything works nicely, yet after a reboot

Gnome-panel does not draw desktop icons, it is done by Nautilus.

I see you have some third-party PPAs enabled, do you use the Ubuntu

[Bug 285998] Re: mv or rm of any XDG user dir causes its definition to change to wrong, oversimple $HOME/

2014-10-22 Thread Chad Miller
An example of the gross failure of this is rmdir ~/Videos .

XDG tools will then notice the dir not missing, and change the
definition to $HOME/ .

Thereafter, media scanner will treat home as the Videos dir, and spend
days of CPU scanning ~/sourcecode/projectsfoo/tests/10TB-of-video-
files/* .

xdg-user-dirs should be an expression of the user's preferences, not an
assertion of what was valid on the disk at some point in the past.

It does not matter whether the named variable's target existed on disk
the last time it looked. Existence of the target is a function of time,
the user's whims, and language. Apps using a XDG name at the user's
request should handle the nonexistence by prompting the user to confirm
intent, or merely create what it was asked to use.

Redefining the variable without any ability to discover or undo it is
evil. Lying about the user's preference is wrong. Assuming apps can
never mkdir() what they are asked to use is wrong.

In the mean time, apps should probably interpret XDG variables that are
$HOME/ (with significan trailing slash) as previously clobbered from
this bug, invalid, and then prompt the user to re-set it to default or
pick a location. If users pick their home, do not include the trailing
slash in the value, and set it to $HOME instead.

The trailing slash is a good semaphore because any app is already
expecting the returned value not to end in a slash. Most values from the
XDG tool are like /home/alice/Music, no trailing slash, so they append
slash and the rest of their relative filename.

[Bug 285998] Re: mv or rm of any XDG user dir causes its definition to change to wrong, oversimple $HOME/

2014-10-22 Thread Chad Miller
** Description changed:

- Tested in Hardy and Intrepid
+ $ rmdir ~/Videos
+ ...
+ $ mkdir ~/Videos

- 1)
- Delete ~/Templates
- Rebooting
- Change in ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs to remove the Templates folder as a link
for the shortcut (RightClick Create Document Template)

- 2)
- Creating ~/Templates
- Rebooting
- There is no change in ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs even when ~/Templates it
present at login, therefore the Template shortcut no longer works
+ Hours later, find apps doing crazy things in home directory.

- Is this intentional or a bug?
+ During the elided period between rmdir and mkdir, if the XDG functions
+ were run, the user's intent is forever lost, and its value is set to the
+ user's home directory.
+
+ Apps can not rely on XDG functions not to lie about what the user wants. It
prefers to say what exists, not now when the app is accessing it, but when the
XDG functions ran. It does not provide a file descriptor for an
+ open_at(2) call. It provides a stale, text name of what used to exist on
disk, and often not even what the user wanted.

[Bug 1384158] Re: Background image can no longer be set independently of org.gnome.background show-desktop-icons=true

2014-10-22 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
Ok, I understand what's going on here:

- Starting nautilus via nautilus-classic.desktop doesn't work because it has
   OnlyShowIn=GNOME;

- Starting nautilus via XDG autostart file doesn't work because it has
   AutostartCondition=GSettings org.gnome.desktop.background show-desktop-icons

But I am afraid that I can't fix the issue properly in Trusty/Utopic
(without introducing regressions), and in Vivid we will be (likely)
using gnome-flashback to draw the desktop, instead of nautilus.

As a workaround, open /etc/xdg/autostart/nautilus-autostart.desktop and
remove the whole AutostartCondition line.

[Bug 1384158] Re: Background image can no longer be set independently of org.gnome.background show-desktop-icons=true

2014-10-22 Thread Alberts Muktupāvels
Ubuntu is patching desktop drawing back to nautilus. Probably that patch
needs to be extended now...

I think that nautilus used to sit down in background process even if it
was not drawing background and/or desktop icons. Now nautilus will close
desktop background window when show-desktop-icons will be set to false.
At least this is how it is working with 3.14.

Why do you want to disable desktop icons? Leave it enabled and make sure
that home-icon-visible, network-icon-visible, trash-cion-visible and
volumes-visible are disabled under org.gnome.nautilus.desktop. That way
desktop window won't be closed and there will be no icons on desktop. Of
course if you have not added any extra icons on desktop.

[Bug 1384158] Re: Background image can no longer be set independently of org.gnome.background show-desktop-icons=true

2014-10-22 Thread Christian Benke
@dimitry hmm, removing AutostartCondition didn't change a thing.
However, it definitely worked fine until i upgraded a few days ago. Will
probably go for Alberts dirty solution if you can't fix it.

Why do you want to disable desktop icons?

@Alberts pointing the desktop to an empty directory feels quite dirty as a fix
imho ;-)
I don't really need a desktop but for a nice background image (transparent
terminal)

Thanks for your concern guys!

[Bug 1384389] [NEW] Evince back and forward buttons does not keep last position when scrolling

2014-10-22 Thread positivek
Public bug reported:

Scrolling in Evince does not seem to set the last location when using
internal hyperlinks and Backward and Forward buttons.

1. Scroll to a place in the document where there is an internal link /
hyperlink that links to another place in the document.

2. Click the internal link to go to another part of document.

3. Click Back button to try to get back to my original scrolled

[Bug 162000] Re: Cannot use Ctrl-Tab as keyboard shortcut in gnome-terminal

2014-10-22 Thread Loren Dias
I configure all my keyboard bindings to use Firefox style hotkeys,

Most of us grew up on Firefox first and Linux second, so it makes sense
to cater to our existing workflow.

This problem is still fundamental, I'm trying to figure out if its possible to
make the necessary edits here, or if the system prohibits it:
~/.config/nautilus/accels
