[Bug 1168978] Re: evince doesn't read pdf that firefox does.

2014-12-18 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
** Description changed:

- When selecting a pdf from a website, firefox opens the document in line.
- There is a button to download the file and then use evince to read it.
- Firefox reads to the end, but evince stops at page 61. When going to
- page 62 evince does the loading animation forever and never renders
- page 62 or beyond. Other pdfs are larger or have more pages (or both)
- and are ok. Using firefox to read the pdf locally works fine too. I
- don't think this is a new format because the device it talks about is
- over 10 years old. I have included the pdf as well.

libcairo2 1.13.0~20140204-0ubuntu1. Opening my printer status showed

[Bug 831308] Re: Evolution crash when copy/move contact between address books

2014-12-18 Thread Steffen Kieß
** Description changed:

- Start evolution - Create dummy/any contact in Personal address-book
- - Create another address-book - Copy dummy contact from Personal
- to another address-book - Copy/Move dummy contact from another to
- Personal address-book - Crash
+ [Impact]

- Message about duplicate contact expected
+ Evolution crashes when attempting to merge contacts (e.g. when copying
+ or moving contacts between address books).

- Instead:
- e-utils-ERROR **: eab-contact-duplicate-detected.ui: Invalid type function
on line 90: 'eab_contact_display_get_type'
+ This is rather annoying as the user might not be aware of the cause of
+ the crash (i.e. that a contact with the same name already exists in the
+ destination address book).
+
+ The fix is to compile evolution without -Bsymbolic-functions. Compiling
+ with -Bsymbolic-functions is not supported by upstream
+ (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=594473). The fix for this
+ issue for Vivid is in bug #1402422.
+
+
+ [Test case]
+
+ Steps to reproduce:
+ - Start evolution
+ - Create contact with full name dummy in Personal address book
+ - Create contact with full name dummy in Personal address book
+
+ Expected behavior: Message about merging the contact
+
+ Actual behavior:
+ (evolution:3262): evolution-util-ERROR **: eab-contact-duplicate-detected.ui:
Invalid type function on line 88: 'eab_contact_display_get_type'

+
+ [Regression potential]
+
+ Regression potential is rather low. There is the possibility that some
+ plugins rely on the semantic of -Bsymbolic-functions (i.e. have internal
+ function which are exported and their names clash) but this seems rather
+ unlikely as all (or at least most) other distributions compile without
+ -Bsymbolic-functions.

[Bug 979445] Re: Brasero should not be on default ubuntu

I just tried to burn a simple flacs to an audio CD, Brasero managed to
screw first disk completely, burn a 25 minutes of silence on another,
and then started to produce undecipherable messages like impossible to
link to plugin pads or whatever. Afterwards, it only produced messages
like Cannot eject disk and Disk already mounted and similar
nonsense. Uninstalled brasero, installed k3b and voila, I have my CD

[Bug 518367] Re: evince displays marked text incorrectly

2014-12-18 Thread Christoph Bier
Guys, this bug report was submitted almost five years ago! I don't know
whether this bug is still present in recent versions of Evince.
Meanwhile I switched to Mac OS (after 16 years with GNU/Linux). You do
not necessarily need typokurz.pdf to reproduce this bug (use any PDF
file with umlauts or ligatures)–but you can find it here: http://bit.ly
/typokurz-cb.

[Bug 1403717] Re: Evince puts up spurious error window when .pdf extension is missing

2014-12-18 Thread Scott Cowles Jacobs
How, exactly, are we to attract new users to Linux, if Evince/Apparmor
puts up an incomprehensible error message for a simple lack of file
extension (in this case), or bombs completely if a user has a non-
standard partition scheme (most data files in a partition outside / (a
previous Evince/Apparmor bug/feature that I encountered).

A new user is just going to try to bring up a .pdf file that his health
insurance marketplace sent him, and Evince is going to fail to do so.

He is not going to know anything about AppArmor, or that that is why his
(perfectly good) file won't display.

Assuming that AppArmor is actually a good thing to have (what it does has
escaped me so far), then it needs to have more flexible defaults, especially
where potential new users are concerned.
If it is somehow VITAL that a document program have a .pdf extension,
then we should have GIMP and LibreOffice and Chromium (etc.) also fail with the
same incomprehensible error message when confronted with a .pdf file without
.pdf.

Apparently, Evince/AppArmor is more concerned with what the file name
is, than whether the file is a proper .pdf file, which the other
programs have no trouble decoding.

You seem to feel that this is not a bug.

It is, at the very least, an over-sensitivity to an omission that for
many (most?) programs, is no problem at all.

-Scott
