[Bug 1405214] Re: Media and Custom Keyboard shortcut, as well as volume / brightness OSD stop randomly working

2015-02-25 Thread Erik M
A workaround is to either open a terminal or Alt+F2 and issue the
command 'unity' . This fixes the shortcuts by restarting unity, but all
applications keep running, wihout login/out.

You may want to try to run this command on resume|thaw in /usr/lib/pm-
utils, since the keyboards (for me) seem to get lost on
docking/undocking and related resumes; but I'm still testing, so i don't
now if this is a robust (automatic) workaround.

[Bug 1425350] Re: Ubuntu GNOME Vivid - password won't unlock screen

2015-02-25 Thread Erick Brunzell
This is not limited to encrypted installs. I just did a plain manual
install and got the same thing.

** Summary changed:

- Ubuntu GNOME encrypted install - password won't unlock screen
+ Ubuntu GNOME Vivid - password won't unlock screen

** Description changed:

I'm testing Ubuntu GNOME Vivid 20150224 i386 and performed an encrypted
LVM install which appeared to complete successfully but when I let the
screen lock my password is not accepted. I repeated the test to be sure
it wasn't an error on my part. To reproduce follow these steps:

- (1) Install Ubuntu GNOME Vivid using entire disc with LVM encryption.
- Be sure to choose auto-login = yes (I'm not sure that matters but I see
- no point in having to enter both the encryption password and the login
- password on each boot).
+ (1) Install Ubuntu GNOME Vivid using any method. Be sure to choose auto-
+ login = yes (I'm not sure that matters but at this point).

  (2) Once the installation is complete boot the new system and wait +5
minutes for the screen to lock.

  (3) Attempt to unlock the screen and you'll find your password is not
- accepted (neither is the encryption password - I checked).
+ accepted.

  (4) Press Ctrl + Alt + F1 to open a TTY, enter your user name, and then
your password which you'll find is accepted.

  (5) Type sudo-reboot and the system reboots as expected.

[Bug 678421] Re: Error message for a faulty ~/.profile script

2015-02-25 Thread Daniel Hahler
Thanks for working on this!

For what it's worth, I've been using the following, and had to move the
set -x now below the exec 2$logfile, otherwise this was detected
as being an error.

1. I've been using the following in ~/.profile, mainly for debugging
purposes:

logfile=/tmp/debug-profile-calls.log
echo -n Calling .profile (via $0) $logfile
date $logfile
echo SHELL: $SHELL $logfile

set -x
exec 1$logfile
exec 2$logfile

2. I was confused that kdialog was being used / preferred: I am using
some KDE apps, but use awesome WM and the software stack based on
Unity/Gnome. Maybe there's a better method to detect a KDE system than
just checking if kdialog is installed.

[Bug 1425779] [NEW] Ubuntu GNOME Vivid logs out to a blank screen

2015-02-25 Thread Erick Brunzell
Public bug reported:

I'm testing Ubuntu GNOME Vivid 20150224 and I'm doing some follow up
testing possibly related to bug #1425350.

I find that simply choosing to log out results in a nearly blank screen
and it's not possible to call a TTY, so a hard reset is needed to reboot
and start over.

Switching to lightdm with the lightdm-gtk-greeter makes logging out work
OK but then the screensaver stops working altogether.

Screenshot attached of the nearly blank screen - only the top panel
appears and both mouse and keyboard appear to be locked.

[Bug 678421] Re: Error message for a faulty ~/.profile script

2015-02-25 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your comments!

On 2015-02-25 19:56, Daniel Hahler wrote:
 set -x
 exec 1$logfile
 exec 2$logfile

Really using the exec command in ~/.profile would stop the execution
of the main process (/usr/sbin/lightdm-session), so I suppose your
~/.profile did not literally contain the above lines. To understand if
it was a false positive, you need to tell us more.

As regards kdialog: Right, just checking if kdialog is installed is
certainly not a safe way to detect a KDE system. OTOH, that's not really
the intention here. Given that you seem to have kdialog installed, does
it matter much if it's used to show the error dialog (in case of an
error) instead of xenity? ;)

If you want to suggest that the code is changed somehow, I ask you to
please file a new bug report, since it would be a little messy to handle
it on this already pretty long report.

[Bug 11334]

2015-02-25 Thread 2-hugo-q
Stop complaining about users not wanting selection-based copying. It
has no negative impact if you don't use it, and users most likely won't
notice it.

Let me shed some light on this (since there also seem to be so many
references to this bug everywhere).

Selected text gets copied to PRIMARY, and get pasted *only* by pressing mouse2.
If you press ctrl+c, whatever is selected is copied to CLIPBOARD. Only
pressing ctrl+v (or selecting copy from some menu) will get CLIPBOARD pasted.
PRIMARY and CLIPBOARD never interact; ever! So if you don't want
selection-based copying, just don't press m2, and you're done, there's no need
to change anything, and it doesn't affect the usage of CLIPBOARD.

[Bug 11334]

2015-02-25 Thread skabbedabbeda
@Hugo:
Fuck off, you moron! Not pressing that button worked 15 years ago when the
scroll wheel wasn't yet invented and the middle button was the same kind of
button as the left and the right button. Nowadays mice have scroll wheels and
it is very common to accidentally press that scroll wheel while scrolling. So
you're scrolling through a text document, you accidentally press the scroll
wheel a little bit too hard and some text is inserted in your document.

People, please stop using this crap. Linux is just utter crap on the
desktop and will never succeed. I can't understand people still use it.
Buy a Mac or install Windows 7. Linux is completely useless and will
always be completely useless.

[Bug 11334]

2015-02-25 Thread Sworddragon
Is there any reason why this ticket is marked as INVALID? Even if this
will still need a while I think we should not stop working on it.

Maybe another possible solution would be to implement this as an optional API
that doesn't require to drop support for legacy applications (at least not in
the near future). Developers can make use of this API for copy/cut/paste in
their applications and old applications will still act in the current way -
either a clipboard manager will take care of this or the clipboard gets lost.

Is there any reason why this ticket is marked as INVALID?

Because it's simply a flame war and disagreement with the current
design.

Reopening the bug has a 0% chance of getting anyone to work on it, and is
unnecessary should someone have a concrete proposal to present - new feature
work is done via discussion patch review on the mailing list, not endless
bug threads.
