[Bug 1431967] Re: Double appmenu entry GNOME Terminal 3.14

2015-03-13 Thread Egmont Koblinger
Having two Terminal entries is indeed a bug.

As for opening a new tab: There's only a single New Terminal entry,
which opens either a new tab or a new window, based on the setting under
Edit-Preferences. The shortcut keys Ctrl+Shift+N and Ctrl+Shift+T are
still available.

[Bug 1431979] [NEW] gdm reveals the last screen right before locking screen after screen turned black

2015-03-13 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

After my screen is turned off due to inactivity and I return to the PC
(after the screen has been turned off for some time) and move the mouse
the login screen (for locked session) is displayed, but not immediately
- the last visible screen before I left the PC is visible for some
instants (can be up to several seconds if the system is under load) and
reveals what should be protected by session locking. `lightdm` does the
job better by showing the session lock screen immediately.

2015-03-13 Thread Bryce Nesbitt
Swap is the equivalent of main memory: the security issues are no
different. Nobody can complain about swap written to disk, as that's a
risk for any piece of main memory at any time. Why turn things so far
upside down to support an edge case (infinite scrollback left open for long
periods of time)?

[Bug 1292398] Re: Second screen position isn't saved from one session to another

2015-03-13 Thread elr77
I would be very disappointed if this bug was not resolved because my
personal work on agent based modelling and development in Java and
SciLab/Matlab means I need to use 3 possibly 4 monitors with the centre
monitor as my primary monitor.

I didn't comment earlier because after web searches I noticed that this
was a problem with any thing based on Ubuntu 14.04 and partly why I
wished Freya was based on a new version of ubuntu. Anyway for me the
solution posted by Nicolas Bernaerts worked perfectly and consistently.
There was the one moment if broken after running a dist-upgrade but I
resolved by just rerunning the fix. If it is any help to the developers
or other users you can find the fix at

http://bernaerts.dyndns.org/linux/74-ubuntu/309-ubuntu-dual-display-
monitor-position-lost

I would help develop an integration of the fix into elementary OS but,
my coding skills only go as far as Java a bit of C# and Matlab.

[Bug 1430620] Re: gnome-terminal writes excessively to /tmp (affecting SSD drives)

2015-03-13 Thread Egmont Koblinger
If it was for me, I probably would have dropped infinite scrollback
support. But apparently some people find it really useful.

We already have a certain code. It was designed with multiple criteria
in mind, including infinite scrollback support, efficient storing on
disk, compression, encryption and so on - storing in memory wasn't
really among these. Tons of code have been built up around these
assumptions.

The main question is not how/why we got here, but how to move on from
here without reimplementing everything from scratch in a totally
different way (and also: why move on at all). I mean re-writing a huge
amount of code is also a possibility, but given the current resources
for vte development it's unlikely to happen in the foreseeable future.
We should accept where we are and find the simplest way to extend that
to keep the data in memory. As I stated in the upstream bug, I believe
the brand new memfd support of Linux seems to be the easiest way. (Or,
as a quick workaround, you can already make it store the scrollback
under a tmpfs-mounted directory. That's pretty much what memfd would
give you, without requiring a tmpfs mount point.)

Why turn things so far upside down to support an edge case (infinite
scrollback left open for long periods of time)?

I can't see why the time should matter here.

We either properly support infinite scrollback (not as an edge case;
without risking heavy swapping and OOM), or we don't. If we do, its
scrollback has to reside on disk. I hope this is clear so far. The
decision was made: we do support it. Most of the scrollback code was
written with this decision in mind.

Have you installed newest vte with the patch I attached, or any other
means of measuring its write activity? I really do want to see numbers
before we move on. The numbers so far still give me an impression that
even for extremely heavy terminal users gnome-terminal would still be
responsible for probably less than 1%/year of SSD wear-out. I'm waiting
for counter-proofs. (Could you please also describe in words what's your
average terminal activity like? E.g. do you have tasks running in the
background that continuously produce data, do you run big compilations
that print a lot, etc.?)

[Bug 1431641] Re: Bug Apparmor on print preview Fotoxx

2015-03-13 Thread Tyler Hicks
Confirmed on Vivid (evince 3.14.2-0ubuntu1).

At first glance, it looks like the evince-previewer profile needs to
'#include dbus' in order to connect to the system bus. However,
testing is needed to confirm that there are no additional accesses
needed after granting permission to connect to the system bus.

Marking as 'Low' since preview and print still work as expected.

[Bug 1431774] Re: Manual cifs mount leads to delay on shutdown

2015-03-13 Thread Martin Pitt
Indeed, thanks for the logs and your patience!

Mar 13 16:19:26 tigger systemd[1]: Stopped Network Manager.
Mar 13 16:19:28 tigger systemd[1]: Stopped target Remote File Systems.
Mar 13 16:19:28 tigger systemd[1]: Stopping Remote File Systems.

Mar 13 16:21:34 tigger systemd[1]: Stopped target Network is Online.
Mar 13 16:21:34 tigger systemd[1]: Stopping Network is Online.

So we need to fix that in NetworkManager's units, it needs to stop after
network-online.target and network.target.

[Bug 1431641] Re: Apparmor denial when viewing print preview in evince

2015-03-13 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Charles, can you adjust the evince-previewer policy in
/etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.evince to have:

...
/usr/bin/evince-previewer {
  #include abstractions/dbus-strict
  ...
}

Then reload the profile with:
$ sudo apparmor_parser -r /etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.evince

then try to reproduce the bug and report back?

Thanks!

[Bug 1071739] Re: Unable to mount Blank DVD-R Disc

2015-03-13 Thread Val
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1069964 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1069964

Marty's workaround in post #6 did not work for me until I figured that I
also had to untick the relevant options in Nemo's configuration. It
seems that Gnome might be relying on Nautilus and its configuration
options, but it does not help to those of us who switched to Nemo after
Nautilus had been severely incapacitated.

In summary, this is what fixed the problem for me:

- in dconf editor, untick automount and automount-open in
org/gnome/desktop/media-handling

- in Nemo - Edit - Preferences, Behavior tab, untick Automatically
mount removeable media when inserted on startup and Automatically open
a folder for automounted media.

The oom killer will only come along if some epic long files have been
cat'ed to the terminal,
and infinite scrollback is selected. Speed, battery life, SSD life, energy

[Bug 1431371] Re: Left Alt + num is not passed to irssi in terminal when in GUI

2015-03-13 Thread Hans-Christian Egtvedt
I highly appreciate the swift comment, and wonder why Google were unable
to locate the bug entry in Gnome's bugzilla.

Workaround by disabling the gnome-terminal shortcuts works very well for
me, as I never use tabs in gnome-terminal. It is however a regression
from previous behavior, unsure about how this bug should be marked and
handled.

[Bug 1431774] [NEW] Manual cifs mount leads to delay on shutdown

2015-03-13 Thread Colin Law
Public bug reported:

To replicate, perform a manual cifs mount, for example:

sudo mount -t cifs -o credentials=,user,rw,uid=1000
//192.168.1.nnn/docs   /media/test_mount

Then shutdown. When booted with systemd there is a 1 to 2 minute delay
before shutdown. In syslog the last shutdown (09:47:11 13th March)
showed the effect, though I fear that syslog shuts down too early to see
anything.

If booted with upstart there is no noticeable delay on shutdown.

I have two IMAP accounts. After resume:

- update of secount accound is successfull.

First account (default) - Courier through SSL
Second account - Zimbra through SSL

This bug is very uncomfortable because I must restart the Evolution

I run the following test steps :

Initial status : Gnome keyring is empty

Step #1 :
 print from Firefox
Nothing asked, new printer icon on top right of the screen. Click - Job#1 is
Held for authentication
 Right-click Authenticate
I Give the credentials and check the Remember password. (attached
print_step1.png)
 Job is printed
Gnome keyring gets a Network password entry
domain\usern...@printserver.epfl.ch (smb)

Step #2 :
 print from Firefox
A dialog opens ans ask for authentication Authentication is required to print
document Title on printer printername.
I Give the credentials and check the Remember password. (attached
print_step2.png)
 Job is printed
Gnome keyring gets a second Password or secret entry
ipp://localhost:631/printers/printername

Step #3 and following :
 print from Firefox
No dialog comes to the user
 Job is printed
Gnome keyring has no more entries than the 2 said before.

To me this is the acceptable behaviour.
Ideal would even be to have step #1 asking interactively for credentials, step
#2 skipped so that we get immediately step #3. But this is outside the scope of
this bug report I think.

Thanks!
Samuel

[Bug 445333] Re: remember password on printing to windows printers does not work

2015-03-13 Thread Mikko Pesari
Works perfectly for me. With an empty keychain, Firefox prompts for
credentials and saves them in the keychain, and printing just works.
Gedit (GTK3 application) is then able to use the same credentials,
although they are a bit different from what GTK3 saves to the keychain.

[Bug 1430620] Re: gnome-terminal writes excessively to /tmp (affecting SSD drives)

2015-03-13 Thread Egmont Koblinger
 Speed

Encryption added about 10% to the required CPU usage. Now, with in-
memory scrollback, would you keep it encrypted or not? If so, you'd keep
wasting CPU. If not, someone will come along and complain that it's been
written to disk (swap) unencrypted and it leaks data. But other apps
also can write their data to swap, and perhaps the whole swap partition
should be encrypted (which is not free either), but it's out of vte's
control. I really don't know the answer to this question.

 battery life
 energy use

Apart from encryption's CPU usage, do you have further information about
it? What's the ratio between 1 second of CPU vs. 0.01 second of HDD
usage? (More concretely: between numbers that correspond to VTE
processing a given amount of scrollback vs. writing that amount of data
to HDD or SSD?)

 SSD life

See above, I still believe it's a non-issue.

 privacy

Solved in vte-0.40.

I perfectly understand your feelings towards storing the scrollback in
memory. What could push this feature request higher up on my priority
list is if you could also support it with evidence (data).

It still looks to me that the typical amount that vte adds to cpu/energy
usage, ssd life etc. are way below to be worried about. And if we're
worried about cpu/energy, we should probably start the optimization
somewhere else.

For start, could you please apply the patch and let me know how much
data your g-t processes during let's say an average week? I have also
installed it (replacing /tmp with my home dir, in case I'll reboot) and
will share my numbers.

[Bug 1026254] Re: Open with on folders was removed, Ubuntu should consider patching back

2015-03-13 Thread Mark Edgington
One decent existing use-case for this feature is the baobab program
(that is useful to a broad user-base, not just power-users), which
helps people see their disk usage, and get rid of unneeded large files.
It would also apply to any other application that operates on folders.

Without this feature in Nautilus, a user is forced to (1) locate /
remember the name of the baobab program and run it, and (2) select an
open folder item from within the application and navigate to wherever
the desired folder to act on is. This is terribly inefficient in
comparison with just right clicking on a folder that you are already
viewing in Nautilus. The same would apply to any software that is
developed to operate on a folder instead of just a file.

One other argument for this is in terms of consistency -- the way you do
something with a file in Nautilus should be consistent with the way you
do something with a folder -- then there's less to remember about how to
do things.

[Bug 1431836] Re: Boot process takes too long when Ethernet is not connected

2015-03-13 Thread Martin Pitt
Ah, this is snappy, this explains all the errors about read-only
directories.

In the with ethernet case, boot started at 19:00:44, and eth0 DHCP is
done at 19:00:57, so 13 s. Then it spends half a minute or so in cloud-
init and click hooks, so that's not systemd's fault. So I consider the
with ethernet case okay (feel free to report bugs against ubuntu-
snappy against wasting all that time in cloud-init, though -- I don't
think it ought to take that long except for the first boot).

In the no ethernet case, boot started at 19:00:44 too. That's really
curious -- it's not the same file, so not just an attachment accident.
Is there a problem with your clock or so? At 19:00:49 eth0 starts up,
and then there are loots of repeated failed attempts to up it. At
19:01:15 (+31 s) cloud-init starts, at 19:02:53 (+2:09) eth0 gives up.
Apparently at 19:06:02 you plugged in the ethernet cable? It seems to
connect then, and reaches the network target. That's indeed buggy,
network.target should be reached way earlier, the missing eth link
should only block networking.target.

So there are two issues here:

  - At the moment, snappy (or at least your image) is assuming ethernet
connectivity, as you obviously have eth0 in /etc/network/interfaces.d/
somewhere (pending confirmation, see my previous question). In the
future we probably want to make this more dynamic, using networkd or
NetworkManager or something such.

 - Something there is blocking network.target on getting eth0 up, which
is wrong. Can you please give me the output of systemctl list-
dependencies network.target?
