[Bug 1431967] Re: Double appmenu entry GNOME Terminal 3.14
Having two Terminal entries is indeed a bug. As for opening a new tab: There's only a single New Terminal entry, which opens either a new tab or a new window, based on the setting under Edit-Preferences. [Bug 1431979] [NEW] gdm reveals the last screen right before locking screen after screen turned black
Public bug reported: After my screen is turned off due to inactivity and I return to the PC (after the screen has been turned off for some time) and move the mouse the login screen (for locked session) is displayed, but not immediately - the last visible screen before I left the PC is visible for some instants (can be up to several seconds if the system is under load) and reveals what should be protected by session locking. `lightdm` does the job better by showing the session lock screen immediately. [Bug 1292398] Re: Second screen position isn't saved from one session to another
I would be very disappointed if this bug was not resolved because my personal work on agent based modelling and development in Java and SciLab/Matlab means I need to use 3 possibly 4 monitors with the centre monitor as my primary monitor. I didn't comment earlier because after web searches I noticed that this was a problem with any thing based on Ubuntu 14.04 and partly why I wished Freya was based on a new version of ubuntu. Anyway for me the solution posted by Nicolas Bernaerts worked perfectly and consistently. There was the one moment if broken after running a dist-upgrade but I resolved by just rerunning the fix. If it is any help to the developers or other users you can find the fix at http://bernaerts.dyndns.org/linux/74-ubuntu/309-ubuntu-dual-display- monitor-position-lost I would help develop an integration of the fix into elementary OS but, my coding skills only go as far as Java a bit of C# and Matlab. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1292398 Title: Second screen position isn't saved from one session to another To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/elementaryos/+bug/1292398/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1430620] Re: gnome-terminal writes excessively to /tmp (affecting SSD drives)
If it was for me, I probably would have dropped infinite scrollback support. But apparently some people find it really useful. We already have a certain code. It was designed with multiple criteria in mind, including infinite scrollback support, efficient storing on disk, compression, encryption and so on - storing in memory wasn't really among these. Tons of code have been built up around these assumptions. The main question is not how/why we got here, but how to move on from here without reimplementing everything from scratch in a totally different way (and also: why move on at all). I mean re-writing a huge amount of code is also a possibility, but given the current resources for vte development it's unlikely to happen in the foreseeable future. We should accept where we are and find the simplest way to extend that to keep the data in memory. As I stated in the upstream bug, I believe the brand new memfd support of Linux seems to be the easiest way. (Or, as a quick workaround, you can already make it store the scrollback under a tmpfs-mounted directory. That's pretty much what memfd would give you, without requiring a tmpfs mount point.) Why turn things so far upside down to support an edge case (infinite scrollback left open for long periods of time)? I can't see why the time should matter here. We either properly support infinite scrollback (not as an edge case; without risking heavy swapping and OOM), or we don't. If we do, its scrollback has to reside on disk. I hope this is clear so far. The decision was made: we do support it. Most of the scrollback code was written with this decision in mind. Have you installed newest vte with the patch I attached, or any other means of measuring its write activity? I really do want to see numbers before we move on. The numbers so far still give me an impression that even for extremely heavy terminal users gnome-terminal would still be responsible for probably less than 1%/year of SSD wear-out. I'm waiting for counter-proofs. (Could you please also describe in words what's your average terminal activity like? E.g. do you have tasks running in the background that continuously produce data, do you run big compilations that print a lot, etc.?) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to vte in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1430620 Title: gnome-terminal writes excessively to /tmp (affecting SSD drives) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vte/+bug/1430620/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Confirmed on Vivid (evince 3.14.2-0ubuntu1). At first glance, it looks like the evince-previewer profile needs to '#include dbus' in order to connect to the system bus. However, testing is needed to confirm that there are no additional accesses needed after granting permission to connect to the system bus. [Bug 1430620] Re: gnome-terminal writes excessively to /tmp (affecting SSD drives)
Speed Encryption added about 10% to the required CPU usage. Now, with in- memory scrollback, would you keep it encrypted or not? If so, you'd keep wasting CPU. If not, someone will come along and complain that it's been written to disk (swap) unencrypted and it leaks data. But other apps also can write their data to swap, and perhaps the whole swap partition should be encrypted (which is not free either), but it's out of vte's control. I really don't know the answer to this question. battery life energy use Apart from encryption's CPU usage, do you have further information about it? What's the ratio between 1 second of CPU vs. 0.01 second of HDD usage? (More concretely: between numbers that correspond to VTE processing a given amount of scrollback vs. writing that amount of data to HDD or SSD?) SSD life See above, I still believe it's a non-issue. privacy Solved in vte-0.40. I perfectly understand your feelings towards storing the scrollback in memory. What could push this feature request higher up on my priority list is if you could also support it with evidence (data). It still looks to me that the typical amount that vte adds to cpu/energy usage, ssd life etc. are way below to be worried about. And if we're worried about cpu/energy, we should probably start the optimization somewhere else. For start, could you please apply the patch and let me know how much data your g-t processes during let's say an average week? I have also installed it (replacing /tmp with my home dir, in case I'll reboot) and will share my numbers. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to vte in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1430620 Title: gnome-terminal writes excessively to /tmp (affecting SSD drives) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vte/+bug/1430620/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1026254] Re: Open with on folders was removed, Ubuntu should consider patching back
One decent existing use-case for this feature is the baobab program (that is useful to a broad user-base, not just power-users), which helps people see their disk usage, and get rid of unneeded large files. It would also apply to any other application that operates on folders. Without this feature in Nautilus, a user is forced to (1) locate / remember the name of the baobab program and run it, and (2) select an open folder item from within the application and navigate to wherever the desired folder to act on is. This is terribly inefficient in comparison with just right clicking on a folder that you are already viewing in Nautilus. The same would apply to any software that is developed to operate on a folder instead of just a file. One other argument for this is in terms of consistency -- the way you do something with a file in Nautilus should be consistent with the way you do something with a folder -- then there's less to remember about how to do things. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1026254 Title: Open with on folders was removed, Ubuntu should consider patching back To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1026254/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1431836] Re: Boot process takes too long when Ethernet is not connected
Ah, this is snappy, this explains all the errors about read-only directories. In the with ethernet case, boot started at 19:00:44, and eth0 DHCP is done at 19:00:57, so 13 s. Then it spends half a minute or so in cloud- init and click hooks, so that's not systemd's fault. So I consider the with ethernet case okay (feel free to report bugs against ubuntu- snappy against wasting all that time in cloud-init, though -- I don't think it ought to take that long except for the first boot). In the no ethernet case, boot started at 19:00:44 too. That's really curious -- it's not the same file, so not just an attachment accident. Is there a problem with your clock or so? At 19:00:49 eth0 starts up, and then there are loots of repeated failed attempts to up it. At 19:01:15 (+31 s) cloud-init starts, at 19:02:53 (+2:09) eth0 gives up. Apparently at 19:06:02 you plugged in the ethernet cable? It seems to connect then, and reaches the network target. That's indeed buggy, network.target should be reached way earlier, the missing eth link should only block networking.target. So there are two issues here: - At the moment, snappy (or at least your image) is assuming ethernet connectivity, as you obviously have eth0 in /etc/network/interfaces.d/ somewhere (pending confirmation, see my previous question). In the future we probably want to make this more dynamic, using networkd or NetworkManager or something such. - Something there is blocking network.target on getting eth0 up, which is wrong. Can you please give me the output of systemctl list- dependencies network.target? ** Also affects: snappy-ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to systemd in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1431836 Title: Boot process takes too long when Ethernet is not connected To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/snappy-ubuntu/+bug/1431836/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
