XEP-0246, therefore, is implementing something few (if any) others do,

replaced by something else later, and not "reactivated"), whereas
implementing XEP-0027 would give telepathy-gabble users in-protocol end-

existing clients and practices.

XTLS, the former XEP-0246, has morphed into an Internet-Draft,
. I
still think this is a better approach to strong cryptography in XMPP
than XEP-0027.

The reason nobody has implemented it yet is that good security is
difficult. I think if it's worth doing, it's worth doing right.

OTR ("off-the-record messaging" as implemented in a Pidgin plugin) is
another option: it's not as flexible as XTLS, but is considerably better
than XEP-0027.

Some thoughts about the right way to do strong cryptography in XMPP,
with specific reference to XTLS and OTR:

> implementing XEP-0027 would give telepathy-gabble users
> in-protocol end-to-end OpenPGP strong encryption

Let's see how that compares with the potentially-desirable security
properties in my mail "Goals for end-to-end security" to the list.

Confidentiality: yes, confidentiality is provided for messages. (I seem
to remember hearing that encrypting messages without also signing them
is a bad idea for some obscure cryptographic reason, but I can't find a
reliable reference for that, so I could be wrong.)

Integrity: no, the integrity of messages is not protected. In
particular, each message is entirely separate, so a "man in the middle"
can silently drop some of your messages and you'll never know. In
addition, the integrity of individual messages is only protected if you
violate the XEP by signing as well as encrypting.

Deniability: yes, unless you violate the XEP and sign the messages as
well as encrypting them.

Non-repudiability: no, unless you violate the XEP and sign the messages
as well as encrypting them. (XTLS and OTR don't provide this either. I
think this is appropriate.)

Strong authentication: yes if you verify key ownership out-of-band,
otherwise no.

Weak authentication: no, nothing in the XMPP connection indicates which
key the peer should expect to use.

Weak anonymity: yes if you use gpg --throw-keyids, otherwise no.

Strong anonymity: yes if you use gpg --throw-keyids, otherwise no. (XTLS
and OTR don't provide this either. I think this is reasonable - secure
anonymity is hard.)

Replay-protection: no, even if you violate the XEP and sign the messages
as well as encrypting them. (In any case, you probably don't want a
signed IM saying something like "yes, I agree", without context, to be
something that exists... )

Perfect forward secrecy: no, losing control of the decryption key makes
all past conversations decryptable.

Some other interesting features of XEP-0027:

* it signs your presence (not very usefully, since it's vulnerable to
replay attacks, and I'm not at all convinced that signing presence
broadcasts is even useful)

* it's incredibly verbose for IMs (there's a significant per-message
overhead, which is proportionally larger for IMs since they tend to be
short)

* it can only carry the text of a message, not XML (like OTR, but
unlike XTLS)

[Bug 1536208] Re: Can no longer find dlna server after upgrade from 15.10 to 16.04

2016-02-22 Thread Sebastien Bacher
I looked a bit at the issue today, some data points

- it works in a guest session

- it doesn't work with a existing/new user(?)

- it's not an issue with rhythmbox, rhythmbox doesn't list the share
either, nor does the grilo-test-ui utility (need to rebuild grilo to try
this one)

- the dleyna 0.5 update doesn't fix it

I'm unsure why it works in a guest session, maybe some features get turned off
due to the restricted permissions and the remaining ones are working...

[Bug 1432265] Re: does not ask for LUKS passphrases without plymouth

2016-02-22 Thread Martin Pitt
I tested this on current Xenial amd64 with a LUKS partition for /opt.
Indeed when dropping "splash" from the command line I only get "Starting
cryptography for..." but no actual prompt. Theh same happens when I use
"console=ttyS0" and thus see the boot messages on the QEMU serial
console.

In this case, systemd-ask-password-console is supposed to kick in. Both
systemd-ask-password-console.{path,service} have

   ConditionPathExists=!/run/plymouth/pid

with the idea that if plymouth is running, the password will be asked by
plymouth, and the "console" askpass would actually get in the way.
Asking passwords with plymouth does work for me (both on tty1 and the
serial console ttyS0), and that's consistent with Julian's report in
comment 8 and the original report by Michael whose kernel command line
also does not have "splash".

Now, I observed that even when booting without "splash", plymouthd is
*still* running, and /run/plymouth/pid exists. It isn't started by
plymouth-start.service as its condition fail (no "splash" in command
line). But I suppose it's already started in the initramfs and survives
from there.

When I remove the above ConditionPathExists=!/run/plymouth/pid, then
prompting for the password when booting without "splash" works fine for
both tty1 and ttyS0, but this is of course not a solution.

I think the bug is that /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/init-
premount/plymouth defaults to starting plymouth if there is no "splash"
argument, but plymouth's systemd units default to *not* starting
plymouth without a "splash" argument.

Explicitly specifying "nosplash" works, but we need to make up our mind
what the default should be for no "*splash*" argument at all. I'd argue
that it should not start plymouth in this case, as that's the intent of
cloud-config and friends, and the intent of plymouth's services.

Bug #1506430 contains very little information, so it is hard to say if
this is a duplicate of that bug or not. It looks as if things should be
fixed in 3.16.5-1ubuntu2; so if anyone has that package (or a later one)
installed and sees this issue repeat they should either reopen Bug
#1506430 or mark this bug as not being a duplicate of it.

[Bug 1230169] Re: screensaver turns on while watching youtube video

2016-02-22 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
This is probably not a gnome-screensaver bug: gnome-screensaver knows
not to show the screensaver only if any app tells it not to. For
example, VLC was fixed in bug 1080847. So this bug report is incomplete
without steps to reproduce, because without those, we can’t tell which
app is failing to send the appropriate signal.

[Bug 273951] Re: evolution-alarm-notify crashed with SIGSEGV in g_object_newv()

2016-02-22 Thread Thomas A. F. Thorne
I think I have seen something quite similar to this bug. I made a fresh
report as Bug #1548226 which includes some valid symbolic stack traces.
Hopefully the developers will be able to use them to work on the issue.

Should this bug ticket be marked as a duplicate of Bug #1548226 as the
circumstances in which it happens are very similar?

If this is thought to be the same bug then perhaps the upstream records
should also be amended as I must be using a more recent version of
evolution.

[Bug 1543585] [NEW] python2.7 crashed with SIGSEGV in gdk_pixbuf_get_from_drawable() possibly while starting WftO from Steam

2016-02-22 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I was starting up War For The Overworld from the Steam application. The
game said that Steam had had some sort of error and the game could not
continue to load. The game then sat there, seemingly frozen. After a
short while I exited it and found a report about a Python 2.7 error
waiting to be reported.
