[Bug 1574617] Re: External monitor keeps going blank

2016-04-28 Thread Lucas Corte Real Saldanha
I found a way to reproduce it. It happens when the mouse pointer jumps
between the two displayport monitors. If I keep moving the mouse between
the two monitors it happens each couple of seconds.

If I disable the vga monitor. The problem is gone...

I have no idea of what is happening but at least know that disabling the
vga monitor solves the issue for me.

Hopefully someone will find out what is happening.

[Bug 1409032] Re: gvfsd-smb: very high CPU utilisation

2016-04-28 Thread rattskjelke
This has never happened before until I installed Xubuntu 16.04 recently.
gvfsd-smb-browse uses 100% CPU until I kill it.
I don't know how to determine what causes it.
I thought it might have been other software I installed or maybe I broke
something so I did a fresh install again and it still happens.

[Bug 1576428] [NEW] The symlink arrow emblem is not displayed in all symlinks

2016-04-28 Thread Bruno Nova
Public bug reported:

That small black curved arrow emblem that is shown in symlinks is not
being displayed for all symlinks in 16.04.

Reproducing the bug may need a bit of trial and error.

To reproduce, create symlinks from some of the files in /usr/bin (or some other
folder) into the home folder.
For example, symlinks to "apt" and "apt-cdrom" don't display the arrow emblem.

[Bug 1576424] [NEW] Gimp crashes with text tool & caps lock

2016-04-28 Thread z3z
Public bug reported:

Gimp crashes with a segfault when I use caps lock while renaming a
layer. Steps to reproduce:

1. Open a new blank gimp document
2. select the text tool
3. type a couple of words of text (gimp will create a text layer above the
background layer)
4. with the text tool still selected, click on the background layer (just to
move away from the text layer)
5. now double click on the text layer to rename the layer (layer name gets
highlighted)
6. press the caps lock key
7. click on the background layer again (without renaming or doing anything to
the text layer)
Now repeat steps 5 and 6.
Gimp crashes.

I can force this to happen every time I launch Gimp. Rebooting makes no
difference. It seems to be the second time I press caps lock that forces
the crash. I tried launching Gimp with caps lock on vs caps lock off,
but I don't believe it made any difference. I can force a crash every
time following the above sequence.

I deleted my gimp preferences folder then rebooted for good measure.
Gimp created a fresh preferences folder, but it hasn't solved the
problem. I was originally in single window mode, but the new preferences
folder put me back to multi window, but it crashes either way.

I ran dmesg | tail after the crash and got the following line:

gimp-2.8[2976]: segfault at 14 ip 7ff5100e0cd9 sp 7ffef11bfcb0
error 4 in libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.2400.30[7ff51001b000+43e000]

I'm using a fresh install of Xubuntu 16.04 with nvidia 361.42 driver
(available from the Additional Drivers tab). In that same tab, I also
have enabled Processor microcode firmware for Intel CPUs. Terminal tells
me Gimp version is 2.8.16-1ubuntu1

I'm not very experienced with bug reporting and not sure what other
information I need to supply. Gimp was absolutely rock solid on this
machine with 15.10, so it may be a Xubuntu issue.

Hope someone can take a look at this. Thanks.

$ evolution -version
evolution 3.10.4

$ gnome-control-center --version
unity-control-center 14.04.3

I was able to get a Google Calendar to synch with Evolution, but still
not able to get Google Contacts to synch using the following procedure:

1. Ubuntu: System Settings -> Online Accounts
a. Add your Google account
b. Turn off all applications except Evolution Data Server for Contacts
and Calendar

2. Browser: Log in to Google go to your "My Account" page
a. "Allow less secure Apps" must be ON
If this is turned OFF, then Evolution will complain about an invalid
password for your gmail account

Calendar

3. Ubuntu: Evolution -> Calendar
a. Add a Google calendar
i. Right-Click CalDAV (or Google, if it already exists in the
left-hand frame)
ii. Select Add Calendar
iii. Type: Google,
 Name: ,
 Color: ,
 User: ,
 Calendar: "Default User Calendar"
iv. Click OK
b. Edit the Properties of calendar you just added
i. Right-Click the new calendar
ii. Select Properties
iii. Click "Find Calendars"
iv. Select the appropriate calendar
v. Click OK

I had to perform both parts 3a and 3b because I received an error trying
to select the Google calendar in the Add step

Contacts

4. Ubuntu: Evolution -> Contacts
a. Click on GoogleContacts
i. I continue getting the "Address book cannot be opened." error
Unable to connect to 'Google Contacts': Requested resource
was not found.

Maybe when 16.04 LTS stabilizes later this year this will be
fixed...

[Bug 1506704] Re: Thin font, nautilus doesn't integrate with Unity.

2016-04-28 Thread Wiktor: Nizio
Installing gnome-settings-daemon does not help. The presence of this

[Bug 1576409] [NEW] calling init.d script with "status" invokes pager

2016-04-28 Thread Martin Pitt
Public bug reported:

Running e. g. "/etc/init.d/networking status" runs a pager (less by
default). This is unexpected from an init.d script, and potentially
breaks scripts or CLI programs that do this operation, as this then
hangs eternally in the interactive pager process until the user quits
it. This reportedly happens with "vagrant up" (see original Debian bug
https://bugs.debian.org/765175).

SRU INFORMATION:
Test case:
Run "/etc/init.d/networking status". In current xenial this invokes less which
you need to quit. With the proposed fix this should return to the shell
immediately without a pager.

Regression potential: very low. The main visible change is the
interactive usage of "/etc/init.d/foo status", but nothing in Ubuntu
(nor hopefully anywhere else) *relies* on the fact that systemctl
invokes a pager, particularly as this is not always done (it depends on
whether stdout is a terminal and how many lines are written).

[Bug 1573168] Re: [Frieza] Location service fails to start cleanly, entering restart loop

2016-04-28 Thread Stefan Kamps
Hi,

I have the Ubuntu M10 (updated to 10.1 after arrival) for a week now and
successfully
used GPS with uNav, SensorStatus and Here Maps.

Since yesterday I encounter the above-mentioned bug. I would like to add
the following observations:

After reboot everything is fine, but when I start one of the GPS apps the GPS
symbol in the indicator menu
starts blinking (frequency: once per second). When I check the app
permissions I see that the list with apps which have requested GPS
access is empty.
When I reboot the M10 again the blinking stops and the list with apps which
requested GPS access is there again.
When the GPS indicator symbol is blinking (because I launched
SensorStatus) and then I start uNav, uNav gives the following error message:
"GPS Denied"
"Error reading the GPS status"
"Please review your device settings"
When I go to device settings I see the following:
- Location Settings: GPS and anoymised Wi-Fi (HERE)
- Battery Settings: GPS enabled
- Secury & privacy -> Apps Permissions -> Location:0

The only way to make the GPS indicator symbol stop blinking is to switch
off GPS location detection.

[Bug 1576341] Re: fails in lxd container

2016-04-28 Thread Stéphane Graber
LXC doesn't drop many capabilities, we only really drop mac_admin,
mac_override, sys_time, sys_module and sys_rawio.

That's because we do run workloads which do need the other capabilities,
including cap_sys_admin.

Now in an unprivileged container, having those capabilities will only do you
good against resources owned by the container and will (obviously) not let you
gain any more rights than you had as the owning uid prior to entering the
container.

So you absolutely do have cap_sys_admin and it will let you do a bunch
of things against the network devices owned by your container or mount
entries owned by the container, ... but it will not let you mess with
things that aren't namespaced and that you wouldn't be allowed to touch
as a normal unprivileged user.

The kernel has a nice ns_capable(ns, CAP) function which lets you check
whether you do have the named capability against a given resource, I'm
not aware of a userspace equivalent though.

Having us drop a bunch of capabilities is the wrong answer though and we
won't be doing that.

[Bug 1559185] Re: Doesn't understand apt: urls

2016-04-28 Thread Bartosz Kosiorek
I installed gnome-software from proposed.

After typing in console:
  $ gnome-software apt:gedit
it is opening ubuntu-software with gedit

After typing in console:
  $ gnome-software apt:gimp
it is opening ubuntu-software with gimp

When I type apt:audacity in chromium or firefox browser, it is trying to
install audacity.

So it is working perfectly fine for me.

[Bug 1574090] Re: not translated at all on ubuntu 16.04

2016-04-28 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@tomtomtom:

brasero has been moved from main to universe, and the brasero.mo files
will be available in /usr/share/locale going forward.

The -base language packs for uz and nds were not included in the Xenial
build on 2016-04-15, probably because the translation coverage was too
low. If you think this is wrong, please file a new bug to the
langpack-o-matic project.

The brasero.mo files for uz and nds you see in /usr/share/locale-
langpack are consequently leftovers from a previous language pack build
in the Xenial development cycle. The duplication does not make the
translations unavailable when running brasero.

The translations which are provided by brasero-common are the upstream
ones, and currently there is no Usbek translation upstream. To change
that, you may want to upload the Uzbek translation to
.

[Bug 1575104] Re: SRU including some fixes/improvements/enabling snap backend

2016-04-28 Thread Bruno Nova
I just updated gnome-software (and related packages) to version
3.20.1+git20160426.1.a976144-ubuntu-xenial-0ubuntu1.

I can now find some snaps in gnome-software and install and remove them.
I can also see installed snaps in the "Installed" tab.

No admin authentication is requested (I am in "sudo" group, didn't try
with non-sudo user), but "snap install" in the terminal requires sudo.

Ubuntu One account login is requested, but why is this needed? No login
is required when installing snaps from the terminal.

A filter to display only snap would be very useful.

[Bug 1576388] [NEW] Flash drives refuse to open in Nautilus after a while

2016-04-28 Thread pelm
Public bug reported:

I'm on Ubuntu 16.04, stable install. I'm trying to open USB flash drives
and they are at first showing up as before on the Unitylauncher and a
Nautilus window open automatically with the drives content. If I unmount
the drive (eject it) and tries to mount another drive (or the same) the
flash drive for the most part starting with an open Nautilus window
again. If I unmount and tries to mount another drive again and again
then after a while it failes and no Nautilus window is showing. It can
work a few times but not for a particularly long time. The drive is
mounted though but Nautilus failes to open it. And Nautilus on the
launcher is not working either, if I click on 'Files', thus Nautilus in
Unitylauncher, it is of course also failing. Open a terminal and running
the command 'nautilus' gives this output:

"(nautilus:9292): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **:
g_dbus_interface_skeleton_unexport: assertion
'interface_->priv->connections != NULL' failed

(nautilus:9292): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: g_dbus_interface_skeleton_unexport:

Kunde inte registrera programmet: Tidsgränsen uppnåddes

(nautilus:9292): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_icon_theme_get_for_screen:

instance

(nautilus:9292): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_signal_connect_object:
assertion 'G_TYPE_CHECK_INSTANCE (instance)' failed"

NOTE: "Kunde inte registrera programmet: Tidsgränsen uppnåddes" above
means: "Could not register the application: Timeout was reached".

If I kill Nautilus, and relaunch it then Nautilus is appearing again and
it works for a while. It's thus for now difficult to work with
flashdrives, after some time I must kill Nautilus and that is
inconvenient. I can say that it can work for a longer time if I unmount
the drives from within Nautilus not from the device-icon in the
Unitylauncher, but through my testing I see that evidently it failes
even then after a while. So, if someone could help.

Thanks in advance!

[Bug 1574090] Re: not translated at all on ubuntu 16.04

2016-04-28 Thread tomtomtom
Well, this is inconsistent behavior.

The language file was located in /usr/share/locale-
langpack/*/LC_MESSAGES/brasero.mo and belongend to the packages
language-pack-gnome-*-base.

Because of the usbekian and lower german translations file are still in
the language packs but the "new" translations comes with brasero-common
instead of language-pack-gnome-*-base in yakkety we are having the
translation for nds in two packages at two different places.

Translation for lower german in yakkety

/usr/share/locale-langpack/nds/LC_MESSAGES/brasero.mo in package
language-pack-gnome-de-base AND
/usr/share/locale/nds/LC_MESSAGES/brasero.mo in package brasero-common

The uzbekian translation is only at /usr/share/locale-
langpack/uz/LC_MESSAGES/brasero.mo in package language-pack-gnome-uz-
base and does not exist in package brasero-common.

[Bug 1575572] Re: apache2 fails to start if installed via cloud config (on Xenial)

2016-04-28 Thread Steve Langasek
> The problem seems to be that any package install during systemd boot of
> a package that only provides sysvinit scripts will fail. Reading invoke-rc.d,
> i'm not really sure why a proper systemd service woudlnt fail also.

The RUNLEVELHELPER check is buggy, yes. However, the behavior of
invoke-rc.d is by design; if the runlevel can't be determined (which
according to systemd it still would not be, even if the bug in invoke-
rc.d was fixed), invoke-rc.d should default to doing nothing because
there's no system policy to say whether the service should be started.

I think there's a case to be made that this is a bug in systemd, for
returning 'unknown' for the runlevel in these cases. The historical
behavior of sysvinit is that everything triggered from /etc/init.d/rc
inherits the value of the current runlevel in the RUNLEVEL environment
variable; and running e.g. 'RUNLEVEL=2 runlevel' - including on systemd
- will report this env value as the target runlevel.

$ runlevel
N 5
$ PREVLEVEL=5 RUNLEVEL=2 runlevel
5 2
$

Unless cloud-init is being called so early in boot that the runlevel
target is not known - which seems very unlikely - then I think the
correct thing for systemd to do is to honor this historical behavior by
making the 'runlevel' command return the target runlevel when called
from a systemd unit that's run at boot, even if that target has not yet
been reached. Opening a task on systemd for this.

Note, BTW, that the above also suggests a workaround for cloud-init to
employ. If for whatever reason systemd will not set itself up to return
the proper runlevel value, cloud-init can simply set RUNLEVEL=2 in the
environment prior to calling dpkg, and invoke-rc.d will pick this up and
DTRT with it.

[Bug 1573408] Re: GNOME Software does not install third-party .deb packages

2016-04-28 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Ok, well, that's is probably a separate issue that is no fault of the
gnome-software package. Thanks for confirming that the fix in xenial-
proposed is working for you.

For the issue with "sudo apt-get update" getting weak-signature-key-rejections,
I'm not sure what the canonical bug will become, but I've discover it already
reported here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+bug/1562733

As the gnome-software bug seems on its way to becoming "fix-released",
my focus will be shifting towards the weak-signature-key-rejections
issue.

I activated the "xenial-proposed" (which is not in the updates tab, but
in the last tab. Don't know the english naming). I've installed the
update via:

$ sudo apt-get install gnome-software/xenial-proposed

After a reboot I was able to install "dropbox_2015.10.28_amd64.deb" and
"google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb" and use the software. Se the
fix seems to work.

[Bug 1575248] Re: "AppStream cache update completed, but some metadata was ignored due to errors." on "sudo apt-get update"

2016-04-28 Thread Mario Limonciello
Shouldn't be necessary to do a new release just for this. SRU's are best to be
small changes with no impact.
I've uploaded a backport of just that patch to xenial-proposed. The release
team will need to ack it and release it and go through the SRU process

this bug. I've just tested it with the 'atom-amd64.deb' package
downloaded from atom.io and the dropbox package too.

[Bug 1571250] Re: Old 2008 bug "Trash" has quit unexpectedly. Is still happening

2016-04-28 Thread GeeMac
Sorry I did not answer all your questions in my last post.
The error pop-up was mainly when I accessed the tool panel/taskbar at the
bottom of the screen. It is set to auto hide, so every time the bar was
accessed either by accessing a item or just inadvertently accessing it, the
trash error would pop-up.
There was also another item that used to pop up along with it. It was part of
the same group of items that included the Trash can.
That stopped some time ago. Sorry, I can't remember what that item was called.
As for restarting; yes, it came back with every restart. I turn this system
of every night so it was a daily occurrence.
I'm trying to remember what group of items this was without taring down the bar
and recreating it. It took me quite some time to get my system the way I want
it and I don't want to take any chances messing this install up. It is a total
nightmare tweaking Ubuntu along with Kodi(XBMC) from scratch, especially Ubuntu
with all the quirks to fix the and tweaks to get the GUI the way you may want
it to look. This setup is in my living room and is displayed on a 48inch /
1219.2mm TV. The Onkyo stereo is on my workbench waiting on me to replace the
bad capacitors on the HDMI control board, a known issue with the 600 series
Onkyos.

You'll have to log out then log in after updating to the version in

[Bug 1576252] [NEW] Launching nautilus from the command line fails to bring window to front if open already

2016-04-28 Thread Albert
Public bug reported:

The expected behavior is that a window opens. The above happens when a nautilus
window is already open for that folder, which then fails to be brought to the
front.

Fortunately nautilus does not crash.

[Bug 1575248] Re: "AppStream cache update completed, but some metadata was ignored due to errors." on "sudo apt-get update"

2016-04-28 Thread Mario Limonciello
I've added these fields upstream
(https://github.com/hughsie/fwupd/commit/f4e0e88f7cba833a4badc1a3d62f1a08dd1bfd96)
and backported the fix as an SRU to -proposed.

** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ * Checks for apt updates using apt or apt-get also update the appstream
+ cache. Some of the appstream metadata installed locally isn't strictly
+ valid as it's missing two fields.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * fwupdmgr refresh
+ * apt update
+ * check for errors about metadata being ignored
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * This is just changing the XML metadata locally, I don't see any
+ regression potential.
+
+ [Other Info]
+
+ * This fix has been applied upstream:

[Bug 871133] Re: Volume Step not changeable in Unity and GNOME desktops

2016-04-28 Thread Alexander Thomas
Still not fixed in 16.04. I just upgraded from Debian wheezy where one
nudge of the scroll wheel changed the alsamixer control by a consistent
5dB. This was bad already, because 5dB is too coarse. It feels like a
compromise between those who want to use the scroll wheel for fine
volume adjustments (which would require a step no larger than 2dB) and
those who want to use it as a mute button (see Bug #551725).
Unfortunately this compromise benefits nobody, because it falls in
between the only two sensible use cases.

The slider behavior in Xenial is worse. The amplitude follows what
appears to be a quadratic function. This feels like someone lacking
proper knowledge about audio had a go at fixing the previous volume
slider that, being a bad compromise, didn't work for anyone. Step size
varies depending on the slider position. I use sensitive earphones that
are already quite loud with the slider near the leftmost position, where
step sizes are about 8dB, which is awful.

Anyone touching code that involves audio, should perhaps first read my rant
about software volume controls:
http://www.dr-lex.be/info-stuff/volumecontrols.html

The position of the slider should map linearly to dB values, or in other
words the volume multiplication factor must be an exponential function
of slider position. It _will_ be unavoidable that for some users the
slider will either have a ‘dead zone’ or a ‘too loud’ zone, because the
maximum loudness of connected loudspeakers or headphones can vary
wildly.

Any interface that changes the volume by discrete increments like volume
keys or the scroll wheel, must use fixed dB steps, in other words a
fixed multiplication factor for linear amplitude. A good size for this
step is 2 dB. To cater for those who only want to use the volume keys or
scroll wheel to quickly make huge volume adjustments, the step size
should indeed be configurable as this bug suggests. A drop-down menu
with values of 1dB, 2dB, 3dB, and 6dB would be sufficient.

[Bug 1576124] Re: cursor bug in the new ubuntu software (gnome-software)

2016-04-28 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it
would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers
of the software by following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please
tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a
bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

I keep system monitor running and noticed that after I plug in a

When killing the “gvfsd-smb-browse” process System Monitor
warns:
