[Bug 1698282] [NEW] Totem uses dramatically higher CPU than any other video player

2017-06-15 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Public bug reported:

Totem uses dramatically higher CPU than any other video player.

Example 1: software playback under Gnome Shell Wayland:

totem: 120% (but drops to 80% in Unity7)
mplayer: 40%
vlc: 40%
[all are using ffmpeg for decoding]

Example 2: hardware-accelerated playback under Gnome Shell Xorg:

totem: 11%
gst-play-1.0: 3%
[both are using gstreamer-vaapi for decoding]

Since the decoding libraries are theoretically the same it sounds like
totem's performance problems might be in its rendering path.

[Bug 1698270] Re: Totem pauses and stutters during video playback even when CPU usage is low

2017-06-15 Thread Saurav Sengupta
This happens in full-screen mode for a window with client-side
decorations using OpenGL. Another workaround is to use GNOME MPV without
CSD or without OpenGL:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=778766#c2

Re comment #2: With GNOME MPV, it doesn't happen on KDE Plasma for me
even if both CSD and OpenGL are enabled.

[Bug 1698270] Re: Totem pauses and stutters during video playback even when CPU usage is low

2017-06-15 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Workaround: Use 'gst-play-1.0' instead of 'totem'. It avoids the
rendering glitches and has much lower CPU usage.

[Bug 1698035] Re: gnome-control-center lacks any replacement for unity-control-center's Diagnostics tab for managing crash reports

2017-06-15 Thread Jeremy Bicha
You can find that ID in /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id . That file is
only readable by root though. I guess they thought that it was
security/privacy problem to allow other people to easily associate
reported errors with a particular computer/person.

See also https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ErrorTracker (which doesn't mention the
whoopsie ID right now)

problem.

Presently the only way I know is in Unity7: click "Show Previous Reports" which

[Bug 1576685] Re: Disable touchpad while typing is not active nor can it be enabled

2017-06-15 Thread Anders Hall
FYI: got a better experience in gnome when opening a terminal and
running syndaemon -d in gnome. However, that seem to freeze the mouse
slightly too long after I have stopped typing. The unity version works
better (not sure what differs yet).

[Bug 1576685] Re: Disable touchpad while typing is not active nor can it be enabled

2017-06-15 Thread Anders Hall
Hi, the synaptics (libinput also installed) package work well for me in
16.04 (and previous version to 12.04 at least) up to 17.04 on thinkpads
(x2XX to carbon X1). Currently using carbon x1 5th gen. There is however
some form of instability with settings that affects many users including
me.

Sometimes the disable while typing feature stops working and reinstall
of libinput and synaptics drivers help. I.e, reinstall xserver-xorg-
input-synaptics and -libinput as well as running:

gconftool-2 --set --type boolean
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled true
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticsTouchpad#Touchpad_not_working_after_login

However, what perplexes me is that the gnome desktop (gnome default) does not
work with synaptics disable while typing when it clearly works in unity at the
same time. I'm testing gnome before 18.04 and login in/out between both
desktops, with the exact same settings (gconf, drivers etc).

Currently I'm writing this in gnome and the cursor skips with random artefacts
that make the keyboard defunct. In unity it works perfectly (two finger scroll,
trackpoint etc works).

[Bug 1698144] [NEW] "journalctl -k" doesn't respect kernel.dmesg_restrict

2017-06-15 Thread Simon Déziel
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1) restrict dmesg to root only
sudo kernel.dmesg_restrict=1
2) check that root can still get dmesg
sudo dmesg
3) check a regular user cannot access dmesg and gets a denial
dmesg
4) check with journalctl
journalctl -k

Here, journalctl should report a denial but instead if gives out the
dmesg output thus bypassing the restriction.

Issue description:

On our systems, access to dmesg is restricted with
kernel.dmesg_restrict=1 which works well:

  $ sysctl kernel.dmesg_restrict
  kernel.dmesg_restrict = 1
  $ dmesg
dmesg: read kernel buffer failed: Operation not permitted

But "journalctl -k" lets anyone bypass that restriction:

  $ journalctl -k | wc -l
  1035

[Bug 1698035] Re: gnome-control-center lacks any replacement for unity-control-center's Diagnostics tab for managing crash reports

2017-06-15 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Unity's Diagnostics subpanel is provided by activity-log-manager-
control-center. There's a standalone version provided by activity-log-
manager. (For code, See src/diagnostic-widgets.c)

activity-log-manager is mostly about configuring zeitgeist, but GNOME
doesn't really use zeitgeist. I think the only reason it's still
installed by default is to benefit Unity users.

GNOME's Privacy panel does have an "Automatic Problem Reporting" section
to manage sending error reports to Fedora's abrt. (See panels/privacy
/cc-privacy-panel.c and privacy.ui)

I think there's a decent chance that a patch to add a compile-time
option to enable support for whoopsie (Ubuntu's service) could be merged
upstream. I mean Fedora really wants other distros to use abrt but I
don't think that has happened yet so it's still a distro-specific
feature. See openSUSE where this has been proposed for years:
https://hackweek.suse.com/projects/integrate-abrt-to-opensuse
(Incidentally, I believe SUSE uses Canonical's apport!)

2017-06-15 Thread Tim
that was provided by an external plugin in the past, but of course
upstream gnome-control-center no longer supports those panels.
