That's weird. Please revert the PPA using ppa-purge. I need to understand
why nothing shows up in /var/crash.

[Bug 1721735] Re: UbuntuOne auth dialog is displayed when polkit auth dialog is dismissed

2017-10-09 Thread Robert Ancell
The cause of this is the Polkit failure is reported back via snapd as a
general unauthorized failure. GNOME Software then attempts to do a snap
login which is the old method of gaining authorization.

There seem to be two solutions to this:

1. snapd should report the auth failure with an error code so that GNOME
Software can tell this is a Polkit failure and not a login credentials
failure. James said this change was unlikely to be done in time for
artful.

2. GNOME Software could stop attempting to login on an auth failure.
This would mean that the Ubuntu One dialog is never shown for snaps,
which is probably appropriate as Polkit covers this case. It means we
can't see private snaps from GNOME Software (since we never prompt for
login), but this was always going to be the case after we switched to
Polkit. To handle private snaps we will have to rethink the UI to
support optional login support.

I think the most appropriate solution is 2 with a versioned dependency
on snapd. We probably can't do this until snapd lands in the archive?

[Bug 1713621] Re: Return the ability (setting) to move the Show Applications icon to the left (or top) of the dock

2017-10-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Reopened because a third person has requested this today.

Didier's reason for saying "Won't Fix" makes some sense when the dock is
on the left. But when the dock is on the bottom, the request makes more
sense.

It's also worth pointing out this is a request for a /setting/ and not a
request to change the default button location.

** Summary changed:

- Return the ability (setting) to move the Show Applications icon to the top
(or left) of the dock
+ Return the ability (setting) to move the Show Applications icon to the left
(or top) of the dock

** Changed in: gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock (Ubuntu)
   Status: Won't Fix => Confirmed

** Description changed:

- Suggestion: Move the Show Applications icon to the top of the dock
-
- It's almost hidden at the bottom on the screen right now. And not very
- well discoverable for Unity users who are used to the BFB at the top.
+ Add an option to move the Show Applications icon to the top (or left) of
+ the dock.

[Bug 1720149] Re: gnome-shell segv on wake from display or system sleep

2017-10-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Rachel,

We are tracking hundreds of gnome-shell crashes right now and have had a
few recent ones related to monitor configurations too.

In order to make progress on this bug we either need a stack trace (look
in /var/crash for crash files), or someone who experiences the problem
to debug it remotely (use a second machine to attach a debugger to
gnome-shell and get a trace of the crash that way).

My concern is that the problem description without a stack trace is so
vague it can easily be mistaken for some other bug. So please try to
gather that additional information. This may help:

http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash

And this is only a request for Rachel right now, so as to avoid
confusion from other peoples' similar issues.

[Bug 1722353] [NEW] Screen blanking and/or screen lock crashes gnome-shell user session on wayland - Ubuntu 17.10 beta

2017-10-09 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Filed against Xorg due to selection limitations of apport. Mutter is the
best guess of responsible application/package.

Automatic (timed) screen blanking (or manually locking the desktop)
causes the wayland gnome-shell session to crash and drop to user login
prompt. The monitor fades the background to black (but oddly the mouse
cursor does not fade). The monitor blanks and goes into signal search
and then power saving mode. Almost immediately the monitor switches back
on, displaying the login prompt (note login and not unlock as would be
expected). Thereafter the screen stays on indefinitely without further
attempts to blank or power-save.

Ubuntu artful 17.10 beta. Dell monitor at 1920x1080x60hz using hdmi
connected to nvidia card with nouveau drivers on wayland session. Xorg
session seems to work as expected.

/var/crash is empty and manually running Apport and reproducing crash
does not produce a crash report, as Apport crashes with the user
session. Have included Apport output, though I had to select xorg from
limited options in app and this is clearly technically incorrect (xorg
session works fine).

Have attached an exported log file of screen blanking causing the crash.
Blanking probably starts at about the 16:04:22 entry, and the actual
crash seems to happen at 16:04:35.

...
16:04:35 gnome-session-b: WARNING: Application 'org.gnome.Shell.desktop' killed
by signal 6

16:04:28 gnome-software: no app for changed ubuntu-appindicat...@ubuntu.com
16:04:22 gnome-shell: Some code accessed the property 'Client' on the module
'dbusMenu'. That property was defined with 'let' or 'const' inside the module.
This was previously supported, but is not correct according to the ES6
standard. Any symbols to be exported from a module must be defined with 'var'.
The property access will work as previously for the time being, but please fix
your code anyway.
...

Crash of gnome-shell can be avoided by changing "Settings - Power -
Power Savings - Blank screen" to "never", and never attempting to lock
the desktop. Alternatively logging in to a Xorg session seems to avoid
crashes.

Bug may be related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/1721577 but
circumstances leading to crash are completely different.

[Bug 1720649] Re: broken gnome expirience caused by unity-compatible patch

2017-10-09 Thread Johnny M1
Yes, it is (displayed). Screenshot taken on GNOME (not ubuntu session - vanilla
gnome wayland session, but i dont think it matters). Since you cant see it,
make sure you disabled top bar application menu (Go to Gnome Tweaks -> Top menu
section -> "Application Menu" switcher). If you still cant see it, make sure
that "alternative toolbar" plugin disabled in rhythmbox. Now you should see the
same rhythmbox as on the attached screenshot.
You should disable "restore-traditional-menubar.patch" (or fix is somehow, if
you want save this menubar for unity session).

[Bug 1720149] Re: gnome-shell segv on wake from display or system sleep

2017-10-09 Thread Rachel Greenham
That wouldn't surprise me. I've seen other reports, on IRC, to the same
effect. Sadly, displayport is not optional here, not if I actually want
to run my monitors at full resolution.

Someone mentioned it being a "known bug" in mutter? However they didn't
link to it and I wasn't at the keyboard at the time to nag them to do
so.

It would explain how I haven't seen it at all on the laptop, which I
only use with its internal screen.

This issue is occurring for me too with amdgpu. I experience the same
problem under both Xorg and Wayland sessions. This is only an issue with
my monitor connected via DisplayPort - when I connect via HDMI gnome-
shell does not crash if the monitor goes to sleep.

[Bug 1722298] [NEW] keyboard autorepeat not happening when I hold down any key

2017-10-09 Thread Jim Kolberg
Public bug reported:

The failure to auto repeat happens in all terminal apps I've tried in
Artful. If I open a virtual console, it looks like a phantom is typing
^@ about once per second. This prevents successfully typing a password,
and is probably what is breaking autorepeat in the GUI terminals,
although they don't show the ^@. Gnome terminal and guake also can't
stay scrolled up in the buffer for more than a second before popping
back down to the bottom.

This problem happens in the Ubuntu desktop or Gnome and it doesn't
matter if I pick the xorg or default Wayland options. It happens under
both the open source and proprietary nvidia drivers. It also happens
with a newly created user with no home directory baggage.

xev reports a constant stream of the following about the same frequency as the
^@ in console:
KeyPress event, serial 62, synthetic NO, window 0x381,
root 0x1dd, subw 0x0, time 2243032, (20,-13), root:(1375,501),
state 0x10, keycode 221 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

If I boot into a recovery shell, the problem does _not_ appear.

My system was built with a fresh install of 17.04, installed my usual
packages, then upgrade to 17.10 when the problem began. I'm certain it
was not present in 17.04 for the few days before I upgraded. There were
similar bugs reported a decade ago, but didn't help me.

Expectation: Hold down any key in terminal window. After a moment, the
letter should repeat until key is released.

Actually: Key will repeat 0 or a few times, but stop repeating before I
release the key.

2017-10-09 Thread Leonidas S. Barbosa
@Rafael, after a dist-upgrade I could reproduce the issue. I believe the
issue is some regression in libpoppler-glib8.

Could you try to downgrade this package to this version:

glib8_0.48.0-2ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb

Here after downgrade libpoppler-glib8 works fine.

[Bug 1722286] [NEW] Same action is forced for lid-close on AC and lid-close on battery

2017-10-09 Thread Kim Nguyễn
Public bug reported:

Note: I'm flagging this as a bug in gnome-settings-daemon, but the
program itself is not buggy. It's rather the usage of this program
instead of unity-settings-daemon in ubuntu 17.10 that causes a system
regression.

---
Up to and including Ubuntu 17.04, unity-settings-daemon was used to managed
suspend policy in the default graphic session (Unity). Unity-settings-daemon is
a fork of (an old version of) gnome-settings-daemon.
Now that gnome-shell is the default environment, session management is handled
by gnome-settings-daemon. In particular, the action to perform when the lid is
closed is handled by the gsd-power plugin of gnome-settings-daemon (as it was
by unity-settings-daemon).

With unity-settings-daemon, two dconf keys where honored (lid-close-ac-
action and lid-close-battery-action, under org/gnome/settings-
daemon/power ) to specify what action are performed when the user closes
the laptop lid, depending on whether the laptop is plugged or on
battery.

In Ubuntu 17.10, gnome-settings-daemon ignore those settings (unless
their value is 'ignore') and delegate actions to systemd-logind. The
latter has no knowledge on whether the laptop is plugged or not and
apply the same action regardless.

This is a regression in a useful (and I believe popular) functionality.
It is common to want the laptop to suspend when unplugged but expecting
it to remain running when plugged (I believe this is the default on
MacOS and windows and both system can be configured to distinguish
between on-AC and on-Battery).

The functionality can be restored with a bit of sweat with either hooks
for acpid (or maybe a session script using the gnome framework to detect
events and apply the correct policy, acpid-scripts run as root), but
this is clearly not something the average user should have to tinker
with.

At the *very least* release note should advertise this regression (as a new
feature ?) but ideally provide a compatibility layer to restore this
functionality.

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:azzar1/gnome-shell-check-nan-2
$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt upgrade

Reboot to make sure you start the new gnome-shell. Please note that this
ppa does not contain a fix but it will make sure we collect more info in
order to debug the issue. In case you get a crash, apport should do the job
otherwise ping me on irc (andyrock) and will help you to collect all the
required info. Thanks!
