[Bug 1724732] [NEW] Wayland login options are missing when a radeon card is installed

2017-10-18 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Public bug reported:

[Bug 1724316] Re: "Sorry, something went wrong cannot authenticate to snap store ..." without any way to fix

2017-10-18 Thread James Henstridge
So further investigation, the "cannot authenticate to snap store: " part
of the error is only added by snapd for an unexpected error:

https://github.com/snapcore/snapd/blob/master/store/auth.go#L190-L204

I believe this is being called via the refreshDischarges() method,
intended to keep the store macaroon up to date. This is called by any
snapd API that talks to the store, so it isn't surprising we'd hit it
during gnome-software start up.

I wonder if changing your Ubuntu One password would be enough for the
store to refuse to refresh the macaroon?

So it looks like the fix probably requires the following:

 1. snapd to handle the INVALID_CREDENTIALS response from the store and
produce an error response that snapd-glib can distinguish.

 2. snapd-glib to handle this error case and map it to one of its error
codes (either a new one, or fold it into invalid-auth-data?)

 3. if snapd-glib produces a new error code, for gnome-software's snap
plugin to map this to an appropriate error code.

The end result should be for gnome-software to call the /v2/login end
point again, probably passing its existing macaroon so it updates the
existing snapd user rather than creating another (i.e. what would happen
to paid snaps for a discarded snapd user ID when it comes time to
refresh?). I'll follow up with the snappy team to verify that this is
the way forward.

[Bug 1724583] Re: gdm3 doesn't list wayland-based sessions

2017-10-18 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Confirmed. For me this bug happens with Radeon cards (using the 'radeon'
kernel module).

And also confirmed this is not a duplicate of bug 1723577. I was trying
to reproduce bug 1723577 when I encountered this one instead.

Can you please provide output from this command?;

  lspci -k

If you happen to have an nvidia card instead then this bug would become
invalid. Because the nvidia driver is known to only support Xorg
sessions by default. If you have a radeon card though, then this is a
new issue which I can confirm.

[Bug 1724489] Re: Searching for "oh my" returns zero results but "oh" does

2017-10-18 Thread Robert Ancell
Ah, seems to be a bug(?) in GNOME Software - it's only actually throwing
away any search word less that 3 characters. So the search "oh my" is
rejected because none of the words are long enough. "oh my gir" would
just search with "gir".

I would have thought having a total number of characters more than three
should be sufficient.

Note the reason for the limitation is for the appstream search
functionality (too many matches with a small number of characters).

[Bug 1724489] Re: Searching for "oh my" returns zero results but "oh" does

2017-10-18 Thread Robert Ancell
The command line finds using these terms:
$ snap find 'oh my'
Name Version Developer Notes Summary
ohmygiraffe 1.1.0a popey - oh my giraffe

The weird thing is gnome-software should be sending the same thing...

Note that searching for "oh" doesn't work in GNOME Software - it doesn't
search until you type three characters.

[Bug 1721719] Re: gvfs-info bashism

2017-10-18 Thread Marcello Nuccio
You are right, the bug is fixed upstream. I have manually downloaded
gvfs-bin_1.34.1-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb and checked the file: it includes the
fix.

However it is not fixed on my computer. And I do not know why.

Unfortunately I have not found the package in /var/cache/apt/archives,
then I am not sure if the .deb installed on my computer is the same.

I have never tampered with my installation. This is a fresh install of
Artful Beta1 updated once a day with "apt dist-upgrade". I dont know
what has happened.

Regarding the use of "$@:2", there is no error displayed because:

1. "$@:2" is valid syntax in both shells, but it is clearly a bug
because it is expanded to "$1" "$2" ... ":2", which does not make sense.
I think that in bash it should have been "${@:2}" (2 is an offset),
while in dash the syntax is not supported and you should use "shift"
instead. You can check it by running:

$ echo 'echo "$@:2"; echo "${@:2}"' | bash -s foo bar
foo bar:2
bar

$ echo 'echo "$@:2"; echo "${@:2}"' | dash -s foo bar
foo bar:2
dash: 1: Bad substitution

2. "gio help info" discards all parameters after "info", then for
example "gio help info :2" is equivalent to "gio help info".

In short: I think you can safely remove "$@:2".

[Bug 1723874] Re: First installation of a snap reports an error "Connection reset by peer"

2017-10-18 Thread Robert Ancell
The fix for this will be in snapd-glib, it was never built with the
assumption that snapd would restart in the middle of a transaction...
This is somewhat tricky to add because we have to be careful for things
to fail fast if snapd is not installed, but handle a restart during a
transaction (which may never come back).

[Bug 1722897] Re: Ubuntu Wayland seems to be allocating 2-3 framebuffer sized surfaces (more than Xorg)

2017-10-18 Thread Sinclair Yeh
Hi Daniel,

Regarding #1, I instrumented our DRM driver and compared the debug
output between Xorg and Wayland login screen, since the same symptom
occurs there.

For Xorg (on Ubuntu 16.04), by the time the login screen shows up, I
only see one request for a FB.

For Wayland (on Ubuntu 17.10), when the login screen tries to come up I
see the following sequence:

FB 1 (prepare_fb)
FB 2 (prepare_fb)
FB 1 (cleanup_fb)
FB 3 (prepare_fb)
FB 2 (cleanup_fb)

Now FB 1 and 2 are freed and the login screen presumably is displayed on
FB 3.

prepare_fb is where the surface gets pinned, and cleanup_fb is where it
gets unpinned. So at one point in this sequence, the user mode is
attempting to have 2 surfaces pinned. I'm guessing it doesn't want to
give up the first FB until it knows the 2nd one is available.

I can work around this one on my end, but I'd like to confirm that this
behavior is from the user mode. It is possible that I goofed on my end,
so I wanted to be sure.

[Bug 1724583] Re: gdm3 doesn't list wayland-based sessions

2017-10-18 Thread Martin Vysny
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1723577 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1723577

Solved! I went to BIOS and switched the Video card setting from Hybrid
to Discrete. Now gdm3 offered the wayland option (or, rather, both
"Ubuntu" and "Ubuntu on Xorg"). I now run Wayland as confirmed by
env|grep wayland:

XDG_SESSION_TYPE=wayland

I believe that nouveau driver is actually being used, so I need to look
into the possibility to force Intel, to achieve better support.

Anyways, it seems that Hybrid mode won't pass gdm3 validation routines
and it disables Wayland support; switching to Discrete solves the issue.

2017-10-18 Thread Martin Vysny
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1723577 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1723577

I disagree about the duplicate status.

This bug: gdm3 itself starts in Wayland successfully, but it doesn't
list the wayland sessions (it only lists the xorg-based sessions).

The bug #1723577 is that gdm3 won't even start and needs to be
reconfigured to start in Xorg mode.

Interesting read. I had been thinking about this paper the other day.
I do some writing in MS or LateX depending on what I'm working on.
I was glad to read this PLOS paper and take a step back and honestly
asked myself if LaTeX was worth it or I was just being pretentious. I
have to say this blog is a pretty spot on assessment.

[Bug 1724597] [NEW] Regression: Text selection not places in PRIMARY clipboard

2017-10-18 Thread Robert C Jennings
Public bug reported:

On artful this morning my text selections in gnome-terminal (and not in
other desktop applications) are not places in the PRIMARY clipboard (or
whatever you call the middle mouse button). I don't find a user
preference to change this. I would like to be able to highlight text
with the mouse in the terminal and then paste with middle mouse button.
Middle mouse paste does work in the terminal for text selected in other
applications. Only the placement of text into the paste buffer is
failing in gnome-terminal.

Yes, I donwgraded in chroot Gnome Shell to this version :

[Bug 1724587] [NEW] nautilus stops responding, Desktop too

2017-10-18 Thread teo1978
Public bug reported:

This happens randomly every once in a while:

- Clicking on Nautilus' Launcher icon does nothing (it blinks for a while as if
it was loading, then no window opens).
- Desktop icons (icons of files and folders in the Desktop) don't respond to
clicks or right-clicks
- running nautilus from a terminal will not print any error message, won't open
any nautilus window, but it will not exit either, just wait forever

The workaround is to "ps aux | grep nautilus" to find nautilus' process
id and kill it. Then everything goes back to normal.

reliably? I will try at home as well...

[Bug 1724583] [NEW] gdm no wayland

2017-10-18 Thread Martin Vysny
Public bug reported:

I've just upgraded to Ubuntu 17.10 and switched the login manager from
sddm to gdm3. Unfortunately it doesn't list the -wayland sessions. The
/usr/share/xsessions folder indeed only contains the -xorg -related
sessions:

$ ls -la /usr/share/xsessions
total 36
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 okt 18 16:00 .
drwxr-xr-x 427 root root 20480 okt 18 15:56 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 201 okt 13 12:56 gnome-xorg.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2354 aug 23 16:39 plasma.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 262 okt 13 12:56 ubuntu-xorg.desktop

How can I enable the ubuntu-wayland session please?

it be that gdm3 for some reason ignores this folder?

[Bug 1724316] Re: "Sorry, something went wrong cannot authenticate to snap store ..." without any way to fix

2017-10-18 Thread James Henstridge
The "Provided email/password is not correct." part of the error message
appears to be coming through straight from the store. This most likely
means you logged in to gnome-software using Ubuntu One credentials at
some point in the past, and the credentials snapd has stored are no
longer valid.

It might be possible to reproduce this by logging in in gnome-software
(currently possible by cancelling the polkit dialog), stopping snapd,
editing /var/lib/snapd/state.json to tamper with the store-macaroon
value and starting snapd again. I'll need to verify if this happens.

The "Sorry, something went wrong" comes from gnome-software itself, and
indicates that the error could not be classified as one of the
GS_PLUGIN_ERROR_* error codes. The code in gnome-software's snap plugin
specifically checks for various authentication related error conditions
(SNAPD_ERROR_AUTH_DATA_REQUIRED and SNAPD_ERROR_AUTH_DATA_REQUIRED in
particular), but that clearly isn't being hit.

So I think there are two possibilities here:

 1. libsnapd-glib isn't returning the correct error type for this case
 2. snapd isn't providing enough info to libsnapd-glib to decode the error

[Bug 1724316] Re: "Sorry, something went wrong cannot authenticate to snap store ..." without any way to fix

2017-10-18 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for your bug report. I've the same issue on my artful and I'm
unsure there is any graphical UI to re-enter credential at the moment?

[Bug 1724489] [NEW] Searching for "oh my" returns zero results but "oh" does

2017-10-18 Thread Will Cooke
Public bug reported:

This seems to be related to the key being searched in G-S.

There is a snap called "oh my giraffe". When you click on the snap to
show the details page the two titles at the top of the screen show "oh
my giraffe".

However, this only shows up in the results when you search for
"ohmygiraffe" or "oh". Searching for "oh my" (note the space) returns
zero results.

** Affects: gnome-software (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
