[Bug 1730184] Re: org.gnome.Shell.desktop[29954]: intel_do_flush_locked failed: Bad address

2017-12-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Please don't attach crash files or core dumps to bugs. It is a security
risk for you, and not helpful to us. Instead use the 'ubuntu-bug'
command to upload .crash files automatically and securely.

[Bug 1731718] Re: screencast freezes

2017-12-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command only once, as it
will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 1731718

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 1739625] Re: Mouse events pass through pure Wayland windows

2017-12-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Sounds like either an incorrect usage of wl_surface::set_input_region by
the clients, or an incorrect default by gnome-shell.

Certainly the spec says it should be "infinite" by default:
  https://wayland.freedesktop.org/docs/html/apa.html#protocol-spec-wl_surface
So that should stop this from happening even with the simplest native Wayland
clients.

[Bug 1739699] [NEW] opening a large number of videos with vlc causes delay and unresponsive vlc

2017-12-21 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. download a free MPlayer test file, like
http://samples.mplayerhq.hu/MPEG-4/video.mp4 and move it into /tmp/a or similar
2. replicate it by running (requires a few GB of free space depending on the
deduplication facilities of your filesystem)

```
import shutil
for i in range(0,1000):
shutil.copy("/tmp/a/video.mp4", "/tmp/a/video-%d.mp4" % (i,))
```
3. open /tmp/a in nautilus, select all files and open them with VLC media
player through the context menu

Instead of putting all files in the VLC queue like Ubuntu 17.04's
nautilus did, an ~"opening in progress" dialog is opened blocking the UI
for almost a minute while consuming 100% of all CPU cores. If the above
is done during high memory consumption of another process hundreds of
VLC processes are started and the display manager crashes (but that's
another issues). If random playback is configured in VLC, it's ignored
and always the last video is played first.

The is no apparent reason why multiple files cannot be opened like in
17.04.

[Bug 1699216] Re: Encrypted home support

2017-12-21 Thread Robert Ancell
Hi Jememy. Nice work on the patches!

I've been working with the AccountsService upstream and I'd like to work
out how we can get these patches in.

I think we can make this work with a couple of changes:
- Instead of making the CreateUserEncrypt() method you could make a new account
type ACCOUNT_TYPE_ENCRYPTED (src/user.h). Since upstream can't currently
support this though 'useradd' it should then fail the call when this account
type is encrypted.
- We then can carry the change in Debian/Ubuntu by modifying
debian/patches/0002-create-and-manage-groups-like-on-a-debian-system.patch (I'm
working on merging in 0006-adduser_instead_of_useradd.patch which should be in
the same patch).

Please open a bug on bugzilla.freedesktop.org with the patch and I will
help review there.

I'm also working on how we can get our adduser changes upstream so we
don't have to carry this patch either
(https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=73838)

I've pinged upstream but I think everyone is on break now (and I will be
for the next two weeks too) but will pick this up when I'm back.

[Bug 1699216] Re: Encrypted home support

2017-12-21 Thread Robert Ancell
Oh, there was one last point:
- You should add a "SupportsEncrypted" property (or similar name) to the
AccountsService daemon. That way you can make the g-c-c patch DTRT and also
make it more upstreamable.

[Bug 1739672] [NEW] Regression in getaddrinfo(): calls block for much longer on Bionic (compared to Xenial)

2017-12-21 Thread Mike Pontillo
Public bug reported:

When testing MAAS on Bionic, we noticed sluggish performance that we
could not immediately explain.

After comparing the results from a run of the test suite on Xenial to a
run on Bionic, we determined that the slowdowns had to do with DNS
lookups. In particular, if MAAS attempts to resolve a hostname using
getaddrinfo() and the call fails, on Xenial the negative result is
returned in a fraction of a second. On Bionic, the negative result is
returned in ~1.6 seconds, according to some measures.

### To run the test ###

git clone https://github.com/mpontillo/test-getaddrinfo
cd test-getaddrinfo
make

[Bug 1730796] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 graphical login and desktop unreadable (no hsync, tearing) on AMD Epyc servers

2017-12-21 Thread Duane Voth
Sure. I've attached two photos, *115057.jpg is with Xwayland enabled,
*115744.jpg disabled. Note that this "tearing" may be different from
other reports - nothing is moving on the display (ie. it is possible
wayland simply read the horizontal frame buffer dimensions wrong).

[Bug 1723025] Re: no login screen when booting with an external monitor attached

2017-12-21 Thread Ananth P
I have a very similar issue in 17.04. The external display is treated as
the second screen, and login screen's main area goes to laptop's inbuilt
screen even though the lid is closed. This started in 17.04, was never
an issue in 16.04.

External monitor connected through HDMI is still functional. It shows
the background image with dots overlay at login screen. There are two
workarounds:

1. If I open and close laptop's lid, the login screen switches over to external
display.
2. If I move the mouse towards right, as it enters the second screen area,
login screen comes to external monitor.

If either of these workarounds help in 17.10, probably it's a bug
carried forward from 17.04

[Bug 1724955] Re: unable to drag monitors in Display Arrangement

2017-12-21 Thread dreamwalker
I have just had this issue as well, I have 3 displays:

Internal Panel (Disabled)
27" on HDMI (Active)
27" on VGA (Active)

I managed to work around the problem by activating the internal panel so
it shows all 3 displays then I could drag the displays into the desired
layout.

Before applying the changes I turned the internal panel off again as I
didn't require it but it saved fine.

System Details:
DELL XPS 9560 running Ubuntu 17.10

[Bug 1729887] Re: Drag-and-drop to desktop not possible without copying the file under wayland

2017-12-21 Thread John Does
I'm a little bit surprised that there are not more reports like mine.
This thing or some connected error cuts off my "workflow" on a regular
basis and, like explained below, often forces me to reboot the computer.

There are at least two additional behaviors that i think are connected
to this report, one a major:

- Major crashes leaving my mouse useless (in most windows) after using
drag-and-drop
After using drag-and-drop from external media to the desktop or dragging a
firefox-bookmark (sometimes happens by mistake using firefox not in fullscreen
mode) to the desktop (this normally should just create a textfile with the
hyperlink) often the mouse stays in grab-mode (a hand is shown) and still can
be moved, but can't be used in different windows for actions like click. Now
the Firefox is useless, closing with strg+w/q fixes it. If the
desktop/folderstructure is affaced by this theres no workaround but to restart
the computer (or maybe killing/restarting the process) to use the mouse again
for clicking.

- Size of Desktop-Icons/Folders grows with the size in folders.
When i change the Size of the Objects in any folder, simultaneously the size of
all objects at the desktop change (not in folder view). This is strange
behavior and im sure it wasnt that way earlier. Like when you change the
objectsize (strg+scrolling) in a photo-folder by the way and afterwards you
cant recognise your desktop anymore, seeing just 3 grown large symbols for
example.

[Bug 1645688] Re: Last.fm stopped scrobbling

Alec,

the -D option to rhythmbox is for function name / file name matching.
Lastfm plugin is part of audioscrobbler plugin ( all files and function
names have audioscrobbler not lastfm ), so you should do

rhythmbox -D audioscrobbler

to get lastfm related log.

[Bug 1739625] [NEW] Mouse events pass trough pure Wayland windows

2017-12-21 Thread Hadrien
Public bug reported:

  * When I run 'mpv', the video player, and I click on the main window with my
mouse, the click goes through and select whatever window was behind.
  * The same thing happens if I build a SDL tutorial and start it with
SDL_VIDEODRIVER=wayland.
  * The same thing happens if I build this Wayland tutorial:

  * The same thing with Jan Newmarch's Wayland tutorial examples.

[Bug 1716203] Re: Backport packages for 16.04.4 HWE stack

2017-12-21 Thread Timo Aaltonen
This set of packages work fine on Intel Coffee Lake, Broadwell and
Skylake, and Radeon R7 260X.

There are a couple of minor driver updates to backport, but those can be
added separately and shouldn't block these updates, which enable Coffee
Lake and bring bugfixes via Mesa.

2017-12-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
>From your logs it appears you have a few "Permission denied" errors on
files within your home directory. This can happen easily as a
consequence of running some things as root in a previous session.

To fix this, please log into a VT (or MATE or Cinnamon) and run:

  sudo chown -R $USER ~

or more specifically:

  sudo chown -R username /home/username

That should fix your "Permission denied" errors, and possibly this whole
bug.

[Bug 1730184] Re: org.gnome.Shell.desktop[29954]: intel_do_flush_locked failed: Bad address

2017-12-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
If we assume that "intel_do_flush_locked" is related to the gnome-shell
crash and this is a specific and not general duplicate of one of the
above bugs, the we should be looking in the package where
"intel_do_flush_locked" exists too. So that's the function
"do_flush_locked" in mesa's
src/mesa/drivers/dri/i915/intel_batchbuffer.c

[Bug 1730184] Re: org.gnome.Shell.desktop[29954]: intel_do_flush_locked failed: Bad address

2017-12-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Yes it appears your gnome-shell process is crashing with "Connection to
xwayland lost".

So this is generally either bug 1505409 or bug 1556601.

It's unclear if "intel_do_flush_locked" is related because in the first
instance you showed that happening before the crash, and in the second
instance it is logged after (with the same timestamp though).

2017-12-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Also, it appears Mesa could be trying harder to handle the error without
taking down the whole process. At present Mesa will just kill the gnome-
shell process when the error occcurs:

   if (ret != 0) {
  fprintf(stderr, "intel_do_flush_locked failed: %s\n", strerror(-ret));
  exit(1);
   }

Actually, in Ubuntu 18.04 and presumably 17.10, the day and time are
displayed up top on the login screen. And you can click on it to show
the calendar with the date. So it sounds like Kai is using some older
Ubuntu release
