[Bug 1742063] [NEW] Systemd taking long time to boot into desktop 18.04

2018-01-08 Thread lotuspsychje
Public bug reported:

ubuntu desktop 18.04 development branch with gnome/xorg @ 9/1/2018

Systemd takes a long time to boot both from start to login and from

disabled auto updates
but it still takes a long time to boot to desktop, on a fast ssd

here's the analyze log after apt.daily disabled:

[Bug 1741839] Re: gdm3 lock screen (not log in) freezes sometime

2018-01-08 Thread Daniel van Vugt
No thanks, we don't need any of those.

I suggest next you should:
  1. Install SSH: sudo apt install openssh-server
  2. Log into the affected machine remotely from a second machine using ssh.
  3. On the second machine start watching the log: journalctl -f
  4. On the affected machine: reproduce the freeze.
  5. Copy/screenshot/photo the final state of the log and provide it here.

[Bug 1741902] Re: Drag and drop state may be freezed by rogue application

2018-01-08 Thread dronus
I thought Metacity is the component that has to deal with inter-
application interaction. Seems I am wrong?

I already know that a bug in nautlius is the trigger of the problem,
however no application should be able to lock drag and drop state on its
own without any way to exit it.

So the only target left to file this bug is the X server?

[Bug 1741886] Re: GNOME shell crashes with sig 11 upon monitor disconnect

2018-01-08 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Please try running this command in a shell on the machine to help you
find links to the crash report:

xdg-open "https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/"`sudo cat /var/lib/whoopsie
/whoopsie-id`

or as two lines:

xdg-open "https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/"`
sudo cat /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id`

That will open a web page. Let us know if it shows you any links that
sound relevant to gnome-shell.

[Bug 1616332] Re: gnome-software using hundreds of MB of memory when not in use

2018-01-08 Thread Matt Lu
Just happened to me, too (17.10 x64). RAM usage got up, system became
sluggish then stopped responding completely, only MagicSysRQ got me out.
After restart, the problem has left an ugly gift: syslog has grown to
6,4 GB (I won't upload that). tail syslog (repeating for at least last
100 lines):

Sometimes, the error messages overlapped, don't know if this is normal:

[Bug 1741511] Re: GDM3 display manager: logon constantly trying to "press enter" - unable to login using PTY

2018-01-08 Thread fermulator
Ha; selected LOCK SCREEN just now, and rolled up the GDM login, boom
reproduced.

SUSPECT:
, in order to reproduce
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1739525, at the
start of ever session, I've been restarting gnome-shell through gpb with:
```
gdb --args gnome-shell --replace
```

This could be relevant here.

[Bug 1741511] Re: GDM3 display manager: logon constantly trying to "press enter" - unable to login using PTY

2018-01-08 Thread fermulator
If it were a physical key stuck issue, the login screen would be
attempting login much faster (there is a key repeat frequency for held
down keys).

I did confirm by "smushing" the keys.

Also, if the user goes to a non-graphical PTY terminal, there are NO
symptoms of "stuck keys".

So it's definitely not a hardware/keyboard problem.

--
However, as suggested, it _could_ be a soft-issue within GDM3. Next time the
situation occurs, is there any other debug information to gather other than
"try to tap some keys"?

[Bug 1741843] Re: caribou (gnome-shell osk): special characters not working

2018-01-08 Thread Fadi Racy
Hi Daniel, the characters appear fine in the OSK, it's when you press
them that it's not typed into the app.

[Bug 1741948] [NEW] Evolution ignores tile window commands in GNOME

2018-01-08 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

As per the Help "Ubuntu Desktop Guide -> Desktop -> Applications and
windows -> Windows and workspaces -> Windows" documentation for "Tile
windows:"

"To maximize a window along a side of the screen, grab the titlebar and
drag it to the left or right side until half of the screen is
highlighted. Using the keyboard, hold down Super and press the Left or
Right key."

When the Evolution main window has focus, the Super + Left and Super +
Right commands are ignored. Additionally, it does not snap to the left
or right when the titlebar is grabbed and dragged to either side of the
screen.

All other GNOME apps do behave as expected. Testing was done with a
GNOME/Xorg session.

[Bug 1741902] Re: Drag and drop state may be freezed by rogue application

2018-01-08 Thread Alberts Muktupāvels
Why do you think that Metacity is the one who freezes? Have you tried
other window managers and/or sessions and this happens only with
Metacity?

The thing is that Metacity does not do anything with drag and drop so
that might be bug in nautilus and/or xserver.

Can you provide steps that I can use to reproduce problem?

[Bug 1741908] [NEW] Calendar Month View Appointment mouse-over context window disappears

2018-01-08 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

In the Calendar Month View of the Evolution user interface, Appointments
are drawn within the day blocks. They begin with the time and the
beginning of the Appointment Summary. When the mouse is moved on top of
the Appointment rectangle, a content window is drawn to show additional
details. However, the context window display amounts to a flicker as it
almost immediately disappears again.

[Bug 1741902] [NEW] Drag and drop state may be freezed by rogue application

2018-01-08 Thread dronus
Public bug reported:

I had some issues with nautlilus in the past time, that of cause need to
be resolved by the nautlilus devs, but it turns out that IO freezes (eg.
dropped sftp connections) may freeze nautlilus while drag and drop
operations, and hence freeze metacity in some kind, as d seems to lock
some control to the participating applications.

What I do:

Drag a file from nautilus.

What happens:

Nautilus blocks for some reason, eg. dropped sftp connection. The mouse
pointer stays in dragging state after releasing the mouse button. No
drop action is executed. Windows can still be bought to front by
clicking them, but never gain focus and no application (besides
nautlilus I guess, which is stalled) receives clicks or keystrokes. If
at some point nautilus crashes in turn, the system usability is fully
restored. If not, a restart by hard shutdown is needed to regain
control.

What should happen:

If an application fails to commence it's drag and drop interaction, the
action should be canceled on metacity's behalf. Otherwise any rogue
application can stop user interaction down to moving the pointer around,
requiring hard reboot.

Security considerations:

Low. The freezed state seems to block screen locking, and may reveal an
unprotected desktop if the rogue application releases control at some
point, eg. by crashing.

[Bug 1741886] [NEW] GNOME shell crashes with sig 11 upon monitor disconnect

2018-01-08 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
Public bug reported:

Upon physical disconnect/connect of a monitor (connected via HDMI) shell

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 17.10

Expected is that physical disconnect/connect of a monitor will not influence

Note that the crash file was generated and according to /var/crash content was
uploaded, when ubuntu-bug triggered by existence of crash file started up and I
agreed with it. Pressing "Continue" button in ubuntu-bug did not bring me to

[Bug 1690280] Re: Classic confined snaps don't install

2018-01-08 Thread James Henstridge
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
Apps that use classic confinement show up in search results but don't install.

  [Test Case]
  1. Open GNOME Software
  2. Search for a classic snap, e.g. "atom"
  3. Install snap

  Expected result:
  Either:
  a) Snap is installed
  b) Snap is not installed and error given
  c) Snap is installed but user needs to provide some sort of confirmation
since it is not confined.

  Observed result:
Snap is not installed, no error given.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Patch changes the code path used to request installation of all snap
packages. Ensure that strict confined snaps continue to be installed with
correct confinement.
+
+ For example, try installing "ohmygiraffe" via gnome-software, then run
+ "snap info ohmygiraffe" from a terminal. The "installed:" line should
+ not include the word "classic".

[Bug 1741245] Re: gnome-shell freezes and crashes upon usb drive insertion

No thanks, it's not secure to attach crash files here.

Your link shows you are experiencing bug 1720768. It appears plausible
this is that same bug so let's make this a duplicate and only reopen
this one if a fix for bug 1720768 doesn't help.

[Bug 1741511] Re: GDM3 display manager: logon constantly trying to "press enter" - unable to login using PTY

2018-01-08 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It sounds like you might have a key repeating, only logically in
software, and only in gdm3.

You may wish to:
  (a) Test a different keyboard, even briefly; or
  (b) When the problem happens again, on the login screen tap your Enter,
Shift, Ctrl, Alt keys a few times each. If one is virtually stuck down in
software that might unstick it.

[Bug 1501250] Re: double clicking on a URL drops the protocol from the URL

2018-01-08 Thread Eyal Teutsch
Must say that like many others I had the habit of double clicking a URL in
order to copy it - a task which I repeatedly do in my work as to paste the URL
in a text editor in order to track report URLs which I'm spawning via the
terminal.
It seems to me that the fact that many users relied on this "accidental"
feature, should cause a change in mind and make it an actual feature.

[Bug 1741843] [NEW] caribou (gnome-shell osk): special characters not working

2018-01-08 Thread Fadi Racy
Public bug reported:

I'm on Ubuntu 17.10 (fully updated, including Gnome-Shell). Hardware is
a Lenovo X1 Carbon Laptop with Touchscreen. I've reproduced this issue
on both Wayland and XOrg. I've reproduced this issue on the 17.10 live
CD (Xorg) and on a fresh 17.10 (Wayland) install in VBox.

Bug: Caribou/Gnome-Shell Wayland support for Caribou does not display
the vast majority of special characters (the ones that you long press on
vowels to get). Nor do the upside down question and exclamation marks
work on it either. Nor do the Euro or Sterling signs work. This makes it
impossible to use when writing in any other languages than English.

1) lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 17.10
Release:17.10

2) package version:

popup and select ê, ë that these letter appear
4) they do not. nothing happens
