[Bug 1753183] [NEW] Not able to do quick calculation via GNOME Activities

2018-03-03 Thread motang
Public bug reported:

With Ubuntu 17.10 I was able to press the Super key and do simple math
quickly (i.e. 40/5 would give me answer of 8), not so with 18.04

[Bug 1705369] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 boots to black screen when using Nvidia drivers (on a desktop with an Intel GPU)

2018-03-03 Thread vallery de lexy
hi, i have this problem too
im using sony vaio vpceg38fg with nvidia 410m
but the screen is not black, its just turned off.
i have tried nvidia binary driver 384.111, 304.137, 340.104 none of them worked
bug-free
nouveau work but i cannot change the brightness of the screen.

i have workaround that work, at least for me.
boot normally into ubuntu, few seconds after the screen turned off by itself
press the power button on the laptop, which trigger sleep state.
wait few seconds, then push the power button again, and voila it worked!

[Bug 1753146] [NEW] Characters Snap doesn't have color emoji

2018-03-03 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

The GNOME Characters snap doesn't have color emoji. This is a regression

Maybe you need to build this snap using bionic's cairo?

[Bug 1753145] [NEW] udevadm info prints unuseful property names

2018-03-03 Thread david braun
Public bug reported:

udevadm info prints properties with names that aren't recognized in udev
rules files. This makes it difficult to write rules using this
information. For instance, to print infomation fo a particular serial
device one might do the following

udevadm info /dev/ttySCM0

producing

P: /devices/pci:00/:00:1a.0/usb1/1-1/1-1.3/1-1.3:1.0/tty/ttyACM0

E: MAJOR=166
E: MINOR=0
E: SUBSYSTEM=tty
E: TAGS=:systemd:
E: USEC_INITIALIZED=64897955420

The properties that are needed to write a rule for this device to create
a stable symbolic link are

E: ID_MODEL_ID=0004
E: ID_SERIAL_SHORT=95635333131351F0A1B2
E: ID_VENDOR_ID=2886

To use these in a udev rule one needs to write

SUBSYSTEM=="tty", ATTRS{idVendor}=="2886", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0004",
ATTRS{serial}=="95635333131351F0A1B2", SYMLINK+="ttyARD0"

If one enters

 udevadm info -a /dev/ttyACM0

one gets the whole tree of devices from /dev/ttyACM0 to the PCI device
for the USB host controller (more that 150 lines of babble for 7
devices). These parameter/property names are all printed in rules file
format (e.g. ATTRS{serial}="95635333131351F0A1B2") but it's impossible
to know which are the correct ones.

In fact if one tries to filter just the parameters needed for the rule
with

 udevadm info -a /dev/ttyACM0 | grep -e vendor -e product -e serial

you get

ATTRS{product}=="Seeeduino v4"
ATTRS{serial}=="95635333131351F0A1B2"
ATTRS{product}=="EHCI Host Controller"
ATTRS{serial}==":00:1a.0"
ATTRS{subsystem_vendor}=="0x1028"
ATTRS{vendor}=="0x8086"

which doesn't even list the values needed for the rule: idVendor
(corresponding to ID_VENDOR_ID) is missing as is idProduct
(corresponding to ID_MODEL_ID) and there are multiple "serial"
parameters.

I saw the upstream response. So this bug will probably keep being open
for now.

Tested in Unity (16.04); the issue is not present there. Possibly unity
has some code which may be useful for an Ubuntu patch of gnome-shell.

[Bug 1508146] Re: Alt+left/right arrows switch between tty consoles (Gnome Shell vanishes), cannot disable

2018-03-03 Thread Timothy Meade
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1710637 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1710637

I'm experiencing this issue after an update through update-manager
(seemingly equivalent to a standard apt-get update).

Based on a comment on another bug [1], I have found that incorrect
configurations are present in my dump keys.

I was able to correct the issue by running:

sudo dumpkeys |grep -v -E '^(\W+)alt(\W+)keycode (105|106) =
(Incr|Decr)_Console' |sudo loadkeys

I am commenting here because I do not experience the ctrl+c issue, and
believe these may be two related but not identical bugs.

gnome-shell, Xorg, and XWayland are running. mutter is not.

Good to see that it is fixed in Ubuntu-16.04-LTS.
Unfortunately, when I had tried to upgrade to 16.04, the kernel did not work
with my i915 video card (I can search to see if there is any updated info about
that).
For bug of High importance, would have liked to see a fix for 14.04 as it is
LTS.
I did find info on another interesting potential workaround: PdfChain
(https://www.hecticgeek.com/2011/12/pdf-manipulator-for-ubuntu-linux/) / pdftk
(http://www.cs.unb.ca/~bremner/blog/posts/filling_in_forms_with_pdftk/) can
apply FDF data - however unfortunately that appears to be more work than
writing with a pen on a printed blank form.
[It's tax season again.]

[Bug 1753136] [NEW] Gettext package inconsistency

2018-03-03 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Public bug reported:

New translation issue after the switch to meson. It's probably an
upstream thing, and I have filed an upstream bug report with a patch and
explained it there.

Possibly this motivates a new upstream release rather than distro
patches in Debian/Ubuntu.

[Bug 1506744] Re: Newly installed applications do not show in the dash

2018-03-03 Thread hansmex
Yesterday, I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 16.04. I then installed the Cinnamon
desktop package.

After installing from software center or using DEB, packages don't show
up when searching for them. This thread is close to TWO years old and
still there is no solution.

The solutions provided above don't work, because those processes aren't
active according to the System Monitor.

Shame on an otherwise perfect OS!
Thank you for solving this issue.

[Bug 1753070] [NEW] Cannot restore default alert sound (Ubuntu bell)

2018-03-03 Thread Remon Huijts
Public bug reported:

After changing the default alert sound in Settings > Sound > Sound
Effects, I cannot restore the alert sound to the Ubuntu 17.10 default.
Gnome Control Center version: 1:3.26.2-0ubuntu0.2

There are five options in the Sound Effects tab: Default, Bark, Drip,
Glass and Sonar. Selecting Default gives the same sound as Drip, which
is not the default I had before.

I think the sound options come from
/usr/share/sounds/gnome/default/alerts where I found Ogg files for the
Bark, Drip, Glass and Sonar options (but not for Default). The
/usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/bell.ogg seems to have been the original
default alert sound, to which I cannot restore.

I am not sure if this is related, but when I opened the Sound Effects
tab for the first time, the Alert Volume slider was at 0% and grayed
out. The alert sound was working fine, so I guess that default settings
from elsewhere were in effect until I started adjusting things in this
tab and thereby overriding those default settings. I cannot restore to
that grayed out state either in this tab.

[Bug 1740792] Re: Automatic login still requires user password after suspend/hibernate

2018-03-03 Thread aleandro
Ubuntu 18.04 dev.

When resuming from suspend, the password is required. There is no way to
control this behaviour from the control center in the settings.
I had to set this by command line:
 gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.screensaver ubuntu-lock-on-suspend 'false'

I remember I could control this option in ubuntu 17.04 from a GUI but I
installed ubuntu 18.04 dev and cannot say yet how I did it.
