[Bug 1770557] [NEW] systemd-resolved should be restarted only on actual DHCP/DNS updates

2018-05-10 Thread Wladimir Mutel
Public bug reported:

My ISP gives me a DHCP IP with lease time about 2 minutes
in the script /etc/dhcp/dhclient-enter-hooks.d/resolved , a function
make_resolv_conf is defined which creates config fragments in resolved.conf.d/
, then unconditionally restarts systemd-resolved service
so, about every 2 minutes, this service is restarted on my system, despite the
fact that DNS configuration is not changed.
I would propose an update to the script, which first creates config fragments
in temporary files, and then it restarts the service only when config is
changed (or created/removed).
now going to attach my patch below

[Bug 1770547] [NEW] X11 failsafe was not very useful

2018-05-10 Thread Seth Arnold
Public bug reported:

Hello, after upgrading from 16.04 LTS to 18.04 LTS I had a non-working
X11 configuration.

The first dialog box said:

The
system
is
running
in low-
graphics
mode

Your
screen,
graphics
card, and
input
device
settings
could not
be
detected
correctly.
You will
need to
configure
these
yourself.
[ OK ]

The next dialog box had four options:

[ ] Try running with default graphical mode
[ ] Reconfigure graphics
[ ] Troubleshoot the error
[ ] Exit to console login
[ Cancel ] [ OK ]

Try running with default graphical mode --> didn't work, returned

Reconfigure graphics --> a new dialog box:

How would you like to reconfigure your display?
[ ] Use default (generic) configuration
[ ] Use your backed-up configuration
[ Cancel ] [ OK ] (probably OK, my photo cut it off)

Neither option worked.

Troubleshoot the error --> a new dialog box:

What information would you like to review?
[ ] Review the xserver log file
[ ] Review the startup errors
[ ] Edit configuration file

Review the xserver log file --> A new dialog box, with the log file.
I can't recall what the "startup errors" button did.
The "Edit configuration file" button didn't do anything useful.

There was a lot of interaction options in this whole experience but the only
ones that actually worked were (a) show the log file (which wasn't actually
useful, but I was grateful for it) (b) exit to console login. That actually
worked pretty well.

I'm sorry I waited too long to report the bug, now my memory is pretty
fuzzy. I just remember that not enough of this system worked to justify
keeping it. Maybe that's due to local errors, the upgrade didn't go
well, but that's precisely when such an interface will be needed most.

Thanks

that all crashes are related to this. System does not halt when in use

Please try reinstalling again fresh without making any configuration
changes or installing additional packages.

Then:

1. Does the problem occur when you haven't yet installed anything?

2. Make changes to the system one-at-a-time and reboot each time. After
which change does the bug occur?

the icons and opening terminal using "Ctrl+Alt+T". I also went to recovery mode
to repair the broken packages and cleaning the system. But after login, I faced
the same problem. To reproduce the error:
  1. Install Ubuntu with of the essential packages.
  2. Login into the system.
  3. Observe the error.

sometimes see the content even without unlocking) although it happens
much less frequently than in 16.04 in my personal experience.

[Bug 1770443] Re: gdm3 sometimes crash after logout and login again

2018-05-10 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your bug report is missing crash details. In
order to debug a crash we will need a crash report. To create one,
please follow these steps:

1. If you are not running a future development release of Ubuntu then apply the
workaround from bug 994921.
2. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport.
3. If the crash is in Xorg then uncomment this option from
/etc/gdm3/custom.conf:
   # Additionally lets the X server dump core if it crashes
   #Enable=true
4. Reboot.
5. Reproduce the crash.
6. Look in /var/crash for crash files and when found, run:
   ubuntu-bug /var/crash/YOURFILE.crash
7. Add a comment here telling us the ID of the new bug that was created in step
6.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments, and doing so is also a
security risk for yourself.

[Bug 1770507] [NEW] Oversized appmenu icon not rescaled

2018-05-10 Thread Egmont Koblinger
Public bug reported:

The patch from bug 1764558
(https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/merge_requests/62) is broken, and
should be reverted (or fixed). The breakage it introduces is noticeably
more severe than the tiny shadow it fixes.

The broken patch resurrects bug 1718238, which was fixed not long before
Bionic's release (but then subsequently broken). Details about the bug
re-occurring start at comment 17 of that bug. Screenshot in comment 26.

Quick recap:
- Launch Ubuntu's default desktop (on X11).
- Go to GNOME Tweaks -> Top bar -> disable Application Menu.
- Make sure the gnome-icon-theme package isn't installed.
- Start gnome-terminal -> note that it looks as in the aforementioned
screenshot.

For some (unknown) reason the removal of the supposedly irrelevant
gnome-icon-theme package makes GTK+ place an icon of 48x48 size as
_NET_WM_ICON, rather than a 16x16 one as when this package is installed.
Mainstream mutter scales this image from 48x48 to 16x16 and then
displays it, as desired. The faulty patch removes the code that scales
the image, so the 48x48 version shows up where there's only room for
16x16.

[Bug 1765799] Re: Applications menu does not get populated with recently installed apps using apt

2018-05-10 Thread fossfreedom
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ Applications menu for GNOME3 based desktop environments doesn't get
+ populated with recently installed app using apt or GUI apps like gnome-
+ software, budgie-welcome (Ubuntu Budgie)
+
+ Users need to physically logout and login again before they see the
+ application appear in their menu.
+
+ This is an intermittent issue - some installs work correctly, some
+ installs dont display in the menu. After logging out and logging in,
+ those installs that didnt display, now appear in the menu.
+
+ This affects all desktop environments that use gnome-menus to recognise
+ new/changed/deleted applications. Primarily this would be Unity and
+ Budgie Desktop. Not sure about GNOME Shell or other desktop
+ environments
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ Install an application using apt (command line), GNOME Software or
+ through budgie-welcome (Ubuntu Budgie only) - The application icon
+ should appear in the menu of the desktop environment being used.
+
+ Remove an application through apt, GNOME Software and/or budgie-welcome
+ (ubuntu budgie) - The application icon should disappear from the menu of
+ the desktop environment being used
+
+ Repeat the above two test cases several times (e.g. 10x) with different
+ applications
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ Arguably the risk is that the patch introduces potential instability
+ into the installation sequence that could cause crashes. That's the
+ worst case scenario.
+
+ The mitigation here is that the patch is the exact same patch used in
+ 17.04 and 17.10. It was also used in 16.04 and 16.10 - in these two
+ cases the patch did not contain a one line fix introduced in 17.04 that
+ fixed a crashing race issue in budgie-desktop.
+
+ [Other Info]
+
+ Consultation with the uploader to 18.04 (Jeremy) is a must here to discuss
possibly reasons why when merging with Debian, the ubuntu specific patch was
not readded.
+
+
+
+
+ Below is the original description
+
Applications menu doesn't get populated with recently installed app
  using apt.

For example, after installing Firefox using apt, its shortcut does not appear
immediately in the applications main menu. It only appeared there after I
rebooted (maybe logging off also does the job).
A “refresh menu” action has to be triggered somehow after installations.

[Bug 1770494] [NEW] Does not display VT-100 control codes correctly/consistently

2018-05-10 Thread Scott
Public bug reported:

I'm writing a shell script that draws in color to any VT-100 terminal.
The terminal in Ubuntu consistently and randomly drops out of graphics
mode producing huge glitches. This does not occur in Xterm or Gnome
terminal on CentOS.

Appearance:
The image from the file below should look like a color filled square, what
you see is a "glitch" which looks like the second half of an escape command
followed by a lot of "a"'s where the graphical checkerboard character should be
rendered (in Ubuntu Gnome terminal it is rendered as a cursor that is the color
of a 50% blend between the background and foreground color, making it the best
appearing terminal I've used)

Reproducibility:
It is 100% reproducible with the instructions below.

To reproduce:
Save the text below to file.txt (or all the text in this window)

In Gnome-Terminal try "cat file.txt" over and over to see the error.

In Gnome-Terminal try "less -r file.txt" and scale the terminal window
to see variation

Comments:
I don't know if there is a problem where characters are dropped from stdin,
or if the pipe is getting reset, or if the emulator can't keep up with the
commands, or if there is a(n inconsisent) limit to the number of command codes
that can be sent to the terminal. Or if it is being interrupted, or if it
randomly resets...

[Bug 1770481] [NEW] core: fall back to bind-mounts for PrivateDevices= execution environments

2018-05-10 Thread Christian Brauner
Public bug reported:

Hey,

Currently any service that has PrivateDevices=true set will fail to
start in unprivileged containers since mknod is not possible and in
privileged containers that drop CAP_MKNOD. I pushed a patch to systemd
upstream that solves this problem and makes PrivateDevices useable in
both scenarios. It would be great if this could be backported to Ubuntu
16.04 and 18.04. We already have a lot of users that would like this
feature enabled/don't want to edit each service file:

since the package version is the same, the patch equally applies to both

Please can this be applied to Cosmic - then SRU'd to bionic?

[Bug 1765799] Re: Applications menu does not get populated with recently installed apps using apt

2018-05-10 Thread fossfreedom
Tested this extensively in budgie - installing/removing repeatedly via
gnome-software, budgie-welcome, command line. Works everytime.

This patch (as mentioned above) copies back the artful patch
80_file_monitor_delayed.patch - it is unchanged.

In terms of risk I would say none - the same patch has been in 17.04 and
17.10 - and was also in 16.04 and 16.10 minus one tweak I made
previously to stop budgie crashing.

Thus this patch has been very well tested over the years!

[Bug 1770473] [NEW] Don't hardcode Ubuntu font name in Settings > Details

2018-05-10 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

Impact
--
On the About screen found in Settings > Details, the distro name and version
(Ubuntu 18.04 LTS) is hard-coded to use the Ubuntu font.

While the rest of the distro-logo.patch (or ubuntu-gnome-version.patch)
has a reasonable chance of being applied upstream, that tweak would need
to be a permanent Ubuntu patch.

The Ubuntu patch causes an issue for derivatives that are not Ubuntu
like System76's Pop!_OS. They could remove or modify the Ubuntu patch,
but it might be nicer to derivatives if they didn't need to do that.

Test Case
-
1. From Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, open the Activities Overview.
2. Enter About and open the Settings > About screen.

Does the Ubuntu version number look ok?

3. Install GNOME Tweaks
4. Open GNOME Tweaks. Switch to the Fonts page and change the interface font to
a recognizable font.
5. Look at the Settings > About window. Does the Ubuntu version number use that
font?

Regression Potential

Users that use custom fonts won't have the Ubuntu font represent the Ubuntu
version number.

After installing Ubuntu 18.04, I updated and upgraded the system using
terminal, installed Ubuntu-mate-welcome and Gnome Tweak Tool. Then I restarted
my machine. After login into the system, I don't see anyway to click on any of
the icons and opening terminal using "Ctrl+Alt+T". I also went to recovery mode

1. Install Ubuntu with of the essential packages.
2. Login into the system.

2018-05-10 Thread Si Dedman
Thanks for fixing this guys & apologies for being dumb, but how does one
install the latest stable on a *buntu system?
1. Download & unpack udisks2_2.7.6.orig.tar.bz2
2. Readme says Udisks has several dependencies listed in
`packaging/udisks2.spec`. If you run rpm based distro, install the dependencies
by: # dnf builddep -y packaging/udisks2.spec,
But there doesn't appear to be that file in the folder and what if you're not
running an rpm system?
3. To configure and install the Udisks, perform following tasks: ./autogen.sh
Doesn't work on *buntu. sh ./autogen.sh says can't open; there is no autogen.sh
file.
4. make: there is no target.

Same problem using tarball from https://github.com/storaged-
project/udisks/releases

Cheers!

No I'm running the i7-7820X which has no option for integrated GPU.

There appear to be some crashes but not from yesterday. Last week I had
been seeing some UI crashes when the desktop was sitting idle after
logged in (before I started using it as my main PC). I had installed the
nvidia drivers which seemed to prevent the crashes. Though perhaps I was
wrong.

How do I find the IDs for bugs created?

Okay will do. What's the difference between the /var/log/Xorg* files

I can't construct a situation that makes this happen :(

Tried installing ubuntu-desktop and wine1.6 (depends on libp11-kit-

and it doesn't happen...

Since this is accepted, can we just watch for the absence of new bug

[Bug 1770405] [NEW] Hotkey pulls window preview instead of cyclying windows

2018-05-10 Thread Segura
Public bug reported:

Setup:
I have two windows of the same application open, then I use its corresponding
hotkey. Ubuntu-dock shows a preview of the windows, dash-to-dock extension
cycles through the windows without showing any preview.

Problem:
Ubuntu-dock behaviour slows down the usage of the dock for me, since I have to
select the window with the arrow keys or the mouse, whereas dash-to-dock I just
had to keep hitting the shortcut to select the desired window.

This behaviour is not configurable with any parameter that I know of,
the one closer would be "/org/gnome/shell/extensions/dash-to-dock/show-
windows-preview true/false", which enables/disables the preview of
windows on the contextual menu of the dock, not the hotkey.

Solution/Proposal:
In my opinion ubuntu-dock should either revert to the dash-to-dock behaviour,
or better, include an additional parameter to configure this behaviour similar
to scroll-action, shift-click-action, shift-middle-clock-action, to configure
what to do on shortcut-action, for instance: cycle-windows, or show-preview

[Bug 1770393] [NEW] text input overflow graphically input field

2018-05-10 Thread zebul666
Public bug reported:

When configuring my wifi connection, I was asked to enter my passphrase
in a dialog input field (full screen dialog).

I pasted (with middle click mouse) my 63 characters passphrase and it
overflows the input field in the idalog

Best to see it in the screenshot.

I reported this upstream at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-
shell/issues/259

But as I have checked that I can't reproduce this in archlinux, I was
said it is certainly an ubuntu bug.

This happens also in Alt-f2 dialog for example when you type a long
text. See gitlab comments.
