[Bug 1779476] Re: Ubuntu 18.04: gdm3 does not switch to graphics after update

2018-07-03 Thread Mark
Turns out lightdm is working after all, almost. If you wait patiently
when the black screen appears after the Ubuntu 5 dots boot screen,
possibly as much as 4 minutes, then the desktop eventually appears,
albeit somewhat messed up, with a message box asking you to "unlock the
login keychain" because it "was not unlocked when you logged in". After
entering the password, the desktop is redrawn correctly and everything
works. I'm still on kernel 4.15.0.24. It seems lightdm is just very slow
as noted by njsf.

I think, if you touch the mouse during this black screen period, the
login screen appears and, if you login you see a black screen for
several seconds then it logs you out again. A cycle you can't get out
of. That's what led to my comment that lightdm wasn't working for me.

Daniel, I will create a bug of my own. Thanks for the explanation.

[Bug 1779907] Re: Object St.BoxLayout has been already deallocated - impossible to connect to signal.

2018-07-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
You're right it is a sign of weakness in Gnome Shell. But that weakness
is what makes so many extensions possible. If it wasn't written in
JavaScript at a high level making everything available for hacking, then
having extensions wouldn't be feasible. So that weakness is also
flexibility.

2018-07-03 Thread Chris Hermansen
I don't have a problem with reporting this to the authors of the
openweather extension, but I guess I'm surprised the extension can cause
hundreds of error messages to be written to the syslog - seems like that
might be some sign of weakness in Gnome Shell... but I'm certainly no
expert.

[Bug 1779846] Re: Pressing Alt+Backslash locks up all windows (no focus)

2018-07-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
First, please try removing these shell extensions:

['system-moni...@paradoxxx.zero.gmail.com',
 'workspace-g...@mathematical.coffee.gmail.com',
 'windows-alt-...@tglman.org']

If that solves the problem then this is a bug in an extension and not in
gnome-shell.

Otherwise, please look in /var/crash and tell us if you find any .crash
files there.

[Bug 1779592] Re: I have video lagging errors

2018-07-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. It sounds like the problems are specific to Chrome and VLC.

For local video file playback we recommend only using 'mpv' or 'totem'
because those are the only players we have verified efficient hardware-
accelerated video playback for. However you will need to enable it first
by running:

  sudo apt install ubuntu-restricted-addons

That will make mpv and totem very efficient (see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntelQuickSyncVideo).

This bug is now a vlc(Ubuntu) bug. If you want to report bugs against
Chrome then please see https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/list

[Bug 1779476] Re: Ubuntu 18.04: gdm3 does not switch to graphics after update

2018-07-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Mark,

gdm3, mutter, gnome-shell, and sometimes graphics drivers, all have
multiple bugs that can result in these same symptoms. So it is helpful
to not group bugs on the symptoms and track down the root cause of each
person's problem separately.

Otherwise when it comes to declaring a bug fixed, one person will agree
it is fixed and another will say it isn't. And the bug will forever be
in deadlock because the two people were actually experiencing different
bugs that need different fixes.

[Bug 1772677] Re: gnome-shell filling up syslog with thousands of entries (stack traces ending in osdWindow.js:206/207)

2018-07-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
km,

Yours is a different bug, with most of the stacks ending in:
userWidget.js:59

Please first try removing any additional gnome-shell extensions you have
installed (they won't appear in the dpkg -l list). If that doesn't help
then open a new bug by running:

  ubuntu-bug gnome-shell

Hi, In that laptop I use a double boot with W10 and there is not problems
with video there, in Ubuntu I have a skipping frame problem, like 2 or 3
seconds of skipping frames in chrome and also in VLC.

This has been fixed upstream, see this patch https://github.com

[Bug 1779956] [NEW] GDPR Compliance

2018-07-03 Thread RXCE
Public bug reported:

The systemd project is experimenting and working with various ideas that
have privacy ramifications. This includes the work in systemd-resolved
and systemd-timesyncd that creates a possibility for disclosure of
personal information to Google or similar providers through default code
paths. The data remitted such as client IP addresses, subdomains
containing usernames or unique IDs, banking domains and similar data may
be considered personal data under the GDPR and other EU law.

These components are currently in a state where it is legally dubious
whether they comply or can be made to comply. In particular, systemd's
default configuration unless otherwise configured and compiled discloses
personal information to Google without consent or methods to withdraw
consent and without plain-language privacy policy. This design overall
is considered flawed by the GDPR.

I had reported this concern upstream as it impacts all distributions,
but the systemd project has shown disinterest in working on "privacy by
design" and making their work compliant. This lack of concern and future
work by the systemd project may interfere with distributions' efforts to
make their distributions compliant.

As such, this work upstream and future work by upstream may interfere
with any compliance efforts by Ubuntu to ensure compliance with the GDPR
as systemd cannot be relied upon as "compliant out of the box" software.

[Bug 1779476] Re: Ubuntu 18.04: gdm3 does not switch to graphics after update

2018-07-03 Thread Dimitrij Mijoski
I think I got hit by this bug too after the kernel update to
4.15.0-24-generic. Found this on askubuntu
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1051555/after-security-update-
to-4-15-0-24-generic-26-ubuntu-screen-shows-log-content which solves the
problem.

Switcing to another tty and then switching to lightdm solved.

After update of gdm and kernel gdm3 no longer enables graphics.

  What happens:
  =
  With and without:
 WaylandEnable=false
  in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf
gdm3 does not switch to graphics.
In both cases I case the X process running (Xwayland or Xorg) but no vt has
it.
lightdm does work, but barely. It takes up to a minute to get to the login
screen.

  What I expected to happen:
  ==
gdm3 switching to graphics in ~20 after boot like pre-update.

Object St.BoxLayout (0x55736a43df40), has been already deallocated -

the object has been destroyed from C code using something such as

[Bug 1779890] [NEW] Nautilus does not use a valid Kerberos ticket when accessing Samba share

2018-07-03 Thread Val
Public bug reported:

Nautilus prompts for username and password when accessing a Samba share
on a network drive, despite having a perfectly valid unexpired Kerberos
ticket. The Kerberos ticket is obtained automatically at logon by
authentication against a Samba Active Directory server (Samba AD-DC).

Accessing the same Samba share with the same Kerberos ticket via
"smbclient //host/sharename -k" works fine.

One known workaround is: "nautilus -q", and then "killall gvfsd". After
that, accessing the Samba share with Nautilus works normally as it
should.

I did not experience this issue in Ubuntu 16.04. It appears that a
regression was introduced somewhere between 16.04 and 18.04.

The issue is quite annoying and confusing for the users who are used to
accessing Samba shares on the network drive without being prompted for
their username and password.

The issue appears to manifest itself usually not on the first access to
a Samba share, but on subsequent accesses after a system reboot or upon
user logout/login. Strangely, removing ~/.cache/ibus/bus/registry file
before user login appears to fix the issue for the current user session,
but then the problem reappears upon subsequent user logins or after a
system reboot.

Nemo appears to have the same problem as Nautilus.

[Bug 1774617] [NEW] Filter out snaps from GNOME Software

2018-07-03 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

An option should be provided in Software & Updates to filter out snaps
from GNOME Software. Perhaps this should also affect the command-line
(just as disabling restricted and multiverse would affect the command-
line). Perhaps a dialogue box should be created when turning off snaps
and the dialogue should ask whether to remove snapd entirely (first
removing the snaps) or to set the refresh timer to monthly ( which is as
close to turning it off as possible, timer CLI is here:
https://snapdocs.labix.org/configuration-options/87 ), or to remove all
snaps, or just to remove them from GNOME Software (for snaps, this could
just hide apps that have their source listed as 'Snap Store').

[Bug 1762952] Re: Alternative shortcut for layout switching Alt+Shift unexpectedly set by default

2018-07-03 Thread Łukasz Zemczak
I somehow forgot about this bug! Ok, I think I know now what you're
aiming for. Normally just checking for the existence of $2 would be
sufficient but not if we're expecting the config changes to happen on
package reinstall. I guess it's just a matter of design here - I
obviously was thinking of more that reinstallation/reconfiguration
should follow the same rules as an upgrade, as first install was already
responsible for modification of the /etc/default/keyboard file. But
there's also the approach of reinstall causing a complete 'fresh
install' of the config, which indeed might sound a bit better.

Let's get this sponsored!

2018-07-03 Thread Mark
Daniel,

Which part of what I wrote you do you another bug about? The fundamental
issue, gdm doesn't work, hence no login screen, after the latest
kernel/gdm update is the same as this bug, so why create a duplicate?

The previous issues were with past distribution versions so filing a bug
is not useful.

That leaves the lightdm problem. Is that it?

[Bug 1779871] [NEW] Ubuntu automatically suspends the laptop for the background user when switching back to it from the foreground user.

2018-07-03 Thread Andrey Arapov
Public bug reported:

To reproduce:

1. Install Ubuntu 18.04 on a laptop
2. Create two user accounts
3. Login to the first account and switch to the second account
4. Disconnect the power plug and work (while on the battery) from one (or the
other) account for some time (more than 20 minutes which is default according
to the "gsettings get org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power
sleep-inactive-battery-timeout" CLI command)
5. When switching a user back to the other account, it will automatically
suspend the laptop.

Workaround:

For each(!) user disable "Automatic suspend" in the Power settings or same with
the CLI command:
gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power
sleep-inactive-battery-type 'nothing'

Bug?

I think it is as having the multiuser session, switching back to the
background user it should not immediately force the laptop sleep due to
the background user inactivity.

How to solve it?

gnome-settings-daemon should probably not take into account the
inactivity timer (or rather reset it) when there are other foreground
users are using Ubuntu.

[Bug 1779663] Re: QT4 Tray application and CPU load in 18.04

2018-07-03 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
> Could not get owner of name 'org.kde.StatusNotifierWatcher': no such
name

Oh, it looks like I was wrong then.

There are two ways to get icons in the panel: via indicator-application
and via the old X11 tray.

The indicator-based tray is default if you have the standard panel
configuration (with indicator-applet added to the panel). But it looks
like you don’t have it, so the X11 tray is used instead.

You can try adding indicator-applet to the panel and see if this helps.

I thought, the QSystemTrayIcon is in the notification area,
automatically. Because we have this area activated and it only appears
within this area.

[Bug 1779846] [NEW] Pressing Alt+Backslash locks up all windows (no focus)

2018-07-03 Thread Marco Gaiarin
Public bug reported:

I've recently switched from 16.04/Unity to 18.04/Gnome3, with new
hardware (a Lenovo Thinkpad T470s) used mostly with a docking station
and external keyboard.

I do heavily use of in-workspace windows switch (eg, Alt+Esc) and i've found
that every time i press Alt+Backslash (in Italian keyboard layout Backslash is
all left, between TAB and Esc keys) my session ''lock up'': i can switch
between windows, i can use the gnome shell and the top bar (status bar?), i can
even run other application (via Alt+F2 or gnome shell menu) but every window
(old or new) are ''locked'', like there's no focus: no keyboard nor mouse
interaction is possible.
Application are not 'locked', they continue to run, but there's no way to
interact with them.

I can also lock the screen, or put the system in standby: i can awaken
from that, insert the password but still no focus on windows.

The only solution: logout.

I've also tried to define a keyboard shortcut to map Alt+Backslash,
but... gnome keyboard configurator locks as every other window when i
press the keys.

Please, help me at least to disable that 'killer' keyboard shortcut! ;-)

Thanks.

[Bug 1779663] Re: QT4 Tray application and CPU load in 18.04

2018-07-03 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
I think it is a bug in sni-qt that sends too many events to gnome-panel.
Other panels like fbpanel do not use indicators so the X11 tray is used
there, which does not have the issue.

sni-qt is also unmaintained so I doubt that this will be fixed.

You can use the X11 tray with gnome-panel too, by removing sni-qt
package and adding “Notification area” applet to the panel.

If you want to further debug the issue, output of dbus-monitor may be
more interesting than strace output.

[Bug 1779663] Re: QT4 Tray application and CPU load in 18.04

2018-07-03 Thread Stefan
Tried the same python minimal application with pyqt5 (qt 5.9.5) - and
no, it does not happen.

So it seems to be a QT4 problem somehow in connection to the gnome-
panel, because this does not happen with the same QT4 application and
fbpanel in the same environment.

stracing the gnome-panel with this pyqt5 app, a similar output is
logged, but not as frequent as with qt4:

I attached the pyqt5 tray app if somebody wants to take a look at that.
But the CPU load disappears with QT5.
