It appears I can reproduce the message by changing wallpapers.

Maybe your system is set to automatically change wallpaper every 10
minutes or so, so you will keep getting the message.

No, nothing is obviously broken, at least to me, but something isn't
right. However it's an annoyance to have my syslog filled up with these
being written every 10 minutes.

[Bug 1787925] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGABRT in meta_bug()

2018-08-20 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 1787957] [NEW] Ubuntu 18.04 login page not shown after upgrade

2018-08-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

As suggested by ubuntu an upgrade was started from 16.04 to 18.04.
Although it was a 32-bit upgrade and release notes tell 32-bit is not possible
anymore, this upgrade succeeded.
But at the restart the login page was not shown and mouse/keyboard did not work.

Probably the problem was caused by the error at syslog:
Aug 19 23:34:11 gert-laptop org.gnome.Shell.desktop[959]: glamor: EGL version
1.4 (DRI2):
Aug 19 23:34:11 gert-laptop org.gnome.Shell.desktop[959]: Require OpenGL
version 2.1 or later.
Aug 19 23:34:11 gert-laptop org.gnome.Shell.desktop[959]: Failed to initialize
glamor
Aug 19 23:34:11 gert-laptop org.gnome.Shell.desktop[959]: Failed to initialize
glamor, falling back to sw

Surprisingly login was possible by using recovery mode, then start "network"
and finally pressing Ctrl-C.
Ubuntu was running successfully, but the external monitor was ignored.

Version of OpenGL seems to be 3.0:
glxinfo | grep OpenGL
OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: llvmpipe (LLVM 6.0, 128 bits)
OpenGL core profile version string: 3.3 (Core Profile) Mesa 18.0.5
OpenGL core profile shading language version string: 3.30
OpenGL core profile context flags: (none)
OpenGL core profile profile mask: core profile
OpenGL core profile extensions:
OpenGL version string: 3.0 Mesa 18.0.5
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.30
OpenGL context flags: (none)
OpenGL extensions:
OpenGL ES profile version string: OpenGL ES 3.0 Mesa 18.0.5
OpenGL ES profile shading language version string: OpenGL ES GLSL ES 3.00
OpenGL ES profile extensions:

Problem could be solved by using one of the
other *ubuntu's or the ugly xfce4, I tried.

The most simple solution is reconfigure lightdm to use display manager
lightdm instead of gdm3 by starting : dpkg-reconfigure lightdm.

Ubuntu now works.
Version of OpenGL now seems to be 1.4 (same as at 16.04 release):
glxinfo | grep OpenGL
OpenGL vendor string: Intel Open Source Technology Center
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 945GM x86/MMX/SSE2
OpenGL version string: 1.4 Mesa 18.0.5
OpenGL extensions:
OpenGL ES profile version string: OpenGL ES 2.0 Mesa 18.0.5
OpenGL ES profile shading language version string: OpenGL ES GLSL ES 1.0.16

Also the dual screen problems from 16.04 seem to be completely solved now.

[Bug 1652282] Re: Xwayland not using XAUTHORITY, prevents root applications from connecting

2018-08-20 Thread Jeremy Bicha
I updated the bug description to point to how openSUSE handles this bug
and opened a mutter task in case we want to copy it.

** Also affects: mutter (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Description changed:

When running wayland, GDM fails to set up an XAUTHORITY file and instead
relies on the process UID for authentication. This prevents
applications run as root, like gparted or synaptic from connecting to
the server. GDM needs to set up the XAUTHORITY file when running
Xwayland just like it does when it runs the conventional Xorg.

A large list of applications broken by this can be found here:

  https://codesearch.debian.net/search?q=Exec%3Dsu-to-
  root+filetype%3Adesktop+path%3A*%2Fapplications%2F*=1
+
+ openSUSE handles this issue with this patch (from the changelog, it looks
like they implemented this for their YaST settings app):

[Bug 1713313] Re: Unable to launch pkexec'ed applications on Wayland session

2018-08-20 Thread Walter Lapchynski
Phillip and bodhi, I know this is something we have discussed before,
but I'm going to say it again and hopefully for the last time: please
keep your comments civil. You can disagree with each other all you want,
but do it respectfully, please. If you see yourself using the word "you"
(or if it's implied) in a comment, that's a sign you're probably doing
something wrong.

Re: [Bug 1778011] Re: SRU: PRIME Power Saving mode draws too much power

2018-08-20 Thread Alberto Milone
Software rendering is a better bet if DKMS fails, as nouveau can cause
problems when dealing with (partially?) supported GPUs. I introduced that
change in bionic, but then I reverted that behaviour, also because it would
cause problems to hybrid graphics.

I don't think users relying on something that is broken should hold us
back. If anything, the fallback would cause users to file bug reports
(about graphics corruption, increased power consumption, etc.) against
nvidia, where these would be really nouveau's.

No, it hasn't... it has been migrated to the new bug tracker.

That isn't mine, and it was closed because it was filed against
Xwayland, which is not where the bug is. Xwayland is doing what it was
told to do by gdm3.

[Bug 1778011] Re: SRU: PRIME Power Saving mode draws too much power

2018-08-20 Thread Łukasz Zemczak
Hello Alberto, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gdm3 into bionic-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/3.28.3-0ubuntu18.04.1 in a few
hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed.Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from
verification-needed-bionic to verification-done-bionic. If it does not
fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the
tag to verification-failed-bionic. In either case, without details of
your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

Not sure if this pertains to this bug at all. I noticed the above every
few minutes in my syslog after upgrading to 18.04.1 last week.

Hello Dariusz, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gdm3 into bionic-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/3.28.3-0ubuntu18.04.1 in a few
hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed.Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from
verification-needed-bionic to verification-done-bionic. If it does not
fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the
tag to verification-failed-bionic. In either case, without details of
your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at

[Bug 1785600] Re: Natural scrolling is only applied in one direction (vertical)

2018-08-20 Thread Vincent
@vanvugt Hmm OK, now I'm starting to doubt myself again. It might still
be messed up, but when I move my fingers right, that means that content
to the left of the view should move to the right, correct? And the
scrollbar should move to the left? Because that's not happening, I
think.

I've attached a short screencast, which shows gedit with content wider
than the viewport. I move my fingers to the right on the touchpad, with
natural scrolling turned on. Nevertheless, content that's currently to
the right of the viewport scrolls into view, i.e. to the left.

Sorry if I'm getting it wrong again, I'm really confused right now :S

[Bug 1778160] Re: /usr/bin/gnome-software:11:g_type_check_instance:g_signal_emit_valist:g_signal_emit:g_closure_invoke:signal_emit_unlocked_R

2018-08-20 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
I tried with the snaps from James directory as mentioned in the forums
thread but cannot reproduce this crash with any of them and the version
of gnome-software in bionic updates.

However looking at errors.u.c there is no occurrence of this crash for
the version of gnome-software with this fix in cosmic and bionic-
proposed. Based on this I'm marking this SRU as verified.

[Bug 1785764] Re: Chrome/Chromium and Image Viewer distort colours if a colour profile is enabled.

2018-08-20 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I guess night mode works by applying a colour profile in much the same
way as any other colour profile. So night mode would continue to
experience similar problems even without a custom profile installed.
Night mode IS a colour profile so it may well hit the same bug.

I now think we should be focusing on fixing the affected apps, maybe
just one or two broken libraries. In the meantime, keep in mind
disabling colour profiles is a good workaround.

** Summary changed:

- Ubuntu default colour profile distorts colours on some machines (white looks
green, too dark, or under-saturated)
+ Chrome/Chromium and Image Viewer distort colours if a colour profile is
enabled.

** Also affects: eog (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided

** Also affects: chromium-browser (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided

[Bug 1787930] [NEW] Bookmark is dragging when clicked once

2018-08-20 Thread dmitry
Public bug reported:

Hi everyone!
I have just upgraded my 16.04 Ubuntu to 18.04.1 Ubuntu.
I have added bookmarks in the left panel of my Nautilus that I frequently use
for my work, but when I left-click once on any of them the bookmark is dragging
together with the mouse cursor that is changed to a "hand" with "+".
Destination of the bookmark is also opening.
But I have to click ESC on the keyboard to get rid of the dragging feature OR I
have to click again on the left panel to return the bookmark on its place.
It is quite annoying...
Thank you for any help!

packages are installed (gvs backend etc.)and the machine was updated

well in the console. The sftü command in Nautilus gives me the error:
