I think you need to set these via the gnome config, otherwise g-s-d will
reset the settings

[Bug 1799390] [NEW] shift_caps_switch doesn't work in Ubuntu 18.04

2018-10-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

setxkbmap -layout us,ru -option grp:shift_caps_switch #nor CapsLock, neither
Shift+CapsLock does nothing
I've tried to set it via Gnome Tweak Tools and DConf editor - it doesn't work
as well.

While only one cups switch works

setxkbmap -query
rules: evdev
model: pc105
layout: us,ru,us
variant:,,
options:grp:caps_toggle

[Bug 1799440] [NEW] Many apps are missing icons in high contrast

2018-10-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

## Expected Behavior

Every app has a proper symbolic icon for high contrast mode.

## Actual Behavior

Characters and Logs are missing an icon.

Amazon, Calculator, Remmina, Software & Updates, Startup Disk Creator,
System Monitor, Thunderbird, Ubuntu Software are using fullcolor icons,
in some cases different from default.

LibreOffice, Software Updater, Startup Applications and Transmission are
using deprecated HighContrast icons.

## Steps to Reproduce the Problem

  1. Settings → Universal Access → High Contrast
  2. Show Applications

## Specifications

Default Ubuntu 18.10 image.

See attached screenshots.

[Bug 1798790] Re: Ubuntu 18.10 login screen never appears when using the Nvidia driver

2018-10-23 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Description changed:

+
+ ---
+
The boot process hangs with the last message being "started bpfilter".
There is unusual Network activity during that time. The light of the
WiFi adapter is blinking a lot.

I am not sure the problem is with the gdm3 package. As a matter of fact,
I would remove it and let someone more experienced to set it. I'm afraid
  I might break something, though.

The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem: 1. Boot Ubuntu 18.10 with the Nvidia proprietary drivers
  installed.

The behavior you expected: I expected Ubuntu 18.10 to boot normally.

The behavior you actually encountered: The computer gets stuck in a
command-like environment with the last message being "started bpfilter".
  You can't type any commands.

I have found that uninstalling the Nvidia proprietary drivers by going
into recovery mode fixes the issue.

Booting with the earlier kernel doesn't fix the issue. Installing the
earlier v.340 driver also doesn't fix the issue.

  This (https://askubuntu.com/questions/1032639/ubuntu-18-04-stuck-in-
  boot-after-starting-gnome-display-manager-on-intel-graphic) seems
relevant. This is where I found the "solution".

  3. Start just one simple app that takes too long to start.

  4. Collect the above logs again.

[Bug 1799617] [NEW] Main user account fails gdm3 - upgrade to Beaver 18.04

2018-10-23 Thread Bruce Alan
Public bug reported:

Just upgraded 16.04.1 LTS to Bionic Beaver 18.04.1 LTS
Upgraded from a non-admin user login using 'sudo', now that user fails GDM
login.
All other users, some admin - some not, work fine.
On failing user mouse cursor locks at last position after clicking on 'login'.
Computer Hard-Locks...

All other users, pointer jumps to lower right quad of screen and login proceeds.
Same lockup when switching to that failing user via User-Switch menu.

[Bug 1799609] [NEW] App Grid "Spring" Animation Increases CPU Usage and Drops Frames

2018-10-23 Thread Luke B.
Public bug reported:

[This is a new report to reflect latest information, considering
previous issue report was submitted two cycles ago]

Opening the Applications Overview (App Grid) displays a janky animation.
Seemingly worse depending on number of application icons being
displayed, this issue will also instantly cause 2 CPU spikes. Differing
hardware configurations will see more/less pronounced results; however,
it is present to some extent on nearly every machine. It will happen
regardless of using the default XOrg or Wayland. This bug is worse on
lower-powered machines, with a 2014 Celeron CPU taking a 65-70% hit with
no other applications open.

Work is being done upstream to squash this very complex bug.

[Bug 1799612] [NEW] Suspend doesn't clear the display

2018-10-23 Thread Paul Becotte
Public bug reported:

I am on a Dell Precision 5520 running 18.10 with default settings,
nvidia drivers, and updated this morning. The bug started yesterday or
the day before.

I have the laptop set to suspend on lid close. Since yesterday, when I
open the lid and the display comes back on, the lock screen doesn't
display. I see the dock bar on the left, the menu at the top, and either
all black or whatever I was working on in the middle. I can move the
mouse, but cannot interact with anything in the dock or the main
display. I CAN interact with the power dropdown at the top right, where
I can select a "pause" logo- which will cause the power to go off (fully
suspending the machine presumably)... and from there when I wake it back
up, the lock screen is properly displayed. I have ALSO tried mashing
function keys to restart the GUI, and a couple times some combination of
alt-ctrl-shift and some function keys have gotten me to a working login
screen (and after typing my password, back to my working session) but it
hasn't worked that way when trying to do it scientifically and press the
buttons slowly to figure out which ones caused it.

[Bug 1798053] Re: [SRU] Click on the back icon in gnome-software doesn't work

2018-10-23 Thread Brian Murray
Hello Per-Inge, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gnome-software into cosmic-proposed. The package will build now
and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
software/3.30.2-0ubuntu8 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from
verification-needed-cosmic to verification-done-cosmic. If it does not
fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the
tag to verification-failed-cosmic. In either case, without details of
your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

I can confirm this. Possibly a duplicate of bug #1760399 and bug

Worth mentioning too that there are other issues with the OSK on Ubuntu

[Bug 1799119] Re: Software Center name not in DNS

2018-10-23 Thread Robert Pearson
Dear Olivier.
As I said in the intial report, I Googled Software Center and got
https://software-center.ubuntu.com/subscriptions/. Apparently the pages
referring to this link are out of date.

The app for installing new apps in MATE is the Software Boutique. But
the list of apps available is very limited and at least the KDE package
is corrupt and will not install. To get additional apps your have to
install an app called "Software". Unfortunately this app in version
18.10 does not work.

Under Ubuntu MATE 18.04, the Software app did include Eclipse and it was
able to install this app. That is not true in 18.10.

I am just trying to help the developers of 18.10 to find the bugs so
that they can fix them. That's ubuntu.

[Bug 1799114] Re: "More..." buttons do not work.

2018-10-23 Thread Robert Pearson
After rebooting my machine I was able to see more apps and was even able
to install one. Then I tried to install Kile in the "Productivity"
heading. I got 0% completion and the "Cancel" button was grayed out. I
quit the app. Now whenever I start the app it goes directly to the Kile
entry with no progress bar or Cancel button.

Obviously the code code for "Software" is not ready to be released. They
should have stuck to the version for Ubuntu MATE 18.04.

[Bug 1799515] [NEW] Gnome on-screen keyboard doesn't appear when a text field is focused

2018-10-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

After installing ubuntu-18.04-desktop-amd64.iso the on-screen keyboard
was working as expected: the on-screen keyboard would come up as soon as
the focus was in a gnome-terminal or gedit window.

But after upgrading gnome-shell from 3.28.1-0ubuntu2 to
3.28.3-0ubuntu0.18.04.2 the on-screen keyboard stopped coming up when
focusing a gnome-terminal or gedit window. The only place (I found)
where the on-screen keyboard still comes up is in the text fields of the
shell such as the search field in the gnome overview.

Details:
* The on-screen keyboard was explicitly enabled in accessibility.
* None of the caribou and onboard packages are installed.
* Only two packages were upgraded between the working and broken configurations:
  gnome-shell 3.28.1-0ubuntu2 ---> 3.28.3-0ubuntu0.18.04.2
  gnome-shell-common  3.28.1-0ubuntu2 ---> 3.28.3-0ubuntu0.18.04.2
* Bug #1589240 is similar but very old and was closed with instructions to
reopen a new bug if needed.
* The test environment is a VMware VM which does have a "real" keyboard and
does not have a touchscreen. I don't think that justifies the change in
behavior, particularly given the inconsistency between gnome-shell's text
fields and the others.

[Bug 1798053] Re: [SRU] Click on the back icon in gnome-software doesn't work

2018-10-23 Thread Olivier Tilloy
** Description changed:

+ [Test Case]
+
+ 1. Open gnome-software
+ 2. Press Ctrl+F and type "firefox" or any string that will return results
+ 3. Click any result in the list (snap package or deb, already installed or
not, it doesn't matter)
+ 4. Observe that a new page is open showing details about the application
+ 5. Close gnome-software
+ 6. Open gnome-software again
+ 7. Observe that the application is open on the last open page (details view
about the application)
+ 8. Click the back button (top-left corner)
+
+ Expected result: the application goes back to the list of search results
+ (or perhaps to the home screen)
+
+ Current result: nothing happens
+
+ Please note that the upstream fix reverts a new behaviour and as a
+ result, when opening again gnome-software at step 6, the application
+ opens on the home screen instead of resuming the last open page. This is
+ consistent with how gnome-software behaves in bionic. So after applying
+ the patch, steps 7 and 8 can be folded into one single step: "Observe
+ that the application is open on the home screen".
+
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ Low. This is a cherry-pick of a self-contained trivial upstream commit that
is already released in gnome-software 3.30.3
(https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-software/commit/ca5f8e74b6f9991ae228caa2c698131a54764774).
+ As noted above, it does change the behaviour of re-opening the application
after closing it, but it reverts it to the behaviour it had in bionic, so I
don't think it should be considered a regression.
+
+ Re-opening the application after closing it in a number of different
+ situations should be thoroughly exercised to make sure that this doesn't
+ introduce any functional regression.
+
+
+ [Original Description]
+
Searched for Chromium, installed Chromium (snap version), clicked Launched
and used chromium.
Went back to gnome-software and clicked the back button. Nothing happened.
Restarted gnome-software and clicked the back button. Nothing happened.

[Bug 1794951] Re: Calculator (snap) is slow to start on a freshly installed Cosmic machine

2018-10-23 Thread Ken VanDine
@willcooke just tested again and confirmed it launches in about 2
seconds with rev 74. It should be more like 25 seconds with the
fontconfig cache misses. I suspect @didrocks' issue is unrelated as he
was seeing more like 10 seconds. Perhaps just slower disk access under
qemu.

[Bug 1798053] Re: Click on the back icon in gnome-software don't work

2018-10-23 Thread Olivier Tilloy
The relevant commit is https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-
software/commit/ca5f8e74b6f9991ae228caa2c698131a54764774, and I verified
that applying it as a patch on top of gnome-software 3.30.2-0ubuntu7
fixes the issue. In fact, with this change, when re-opening gnome-
software after closing it while seeing the details of an app, the
application is reset to the main screen. Which may or may not be seen as
desirable, but at least it fixes the bug.

[Bug 1799293] [NEW] gnome session: Must ask twice to lock the screen when user has auto-login enabled

2018-10-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

1) Ubuntu 18.10 (new install)
2) gdm3 3.30.1-1ubuntu5

Preconditions
The session's user has auto-login enabled (i.e. the system starts and the user
is not prompted for a password but directly presented with the desktop)

3) What should happen:
Unlocked desktop is showing. Lock screen is invoked (via WIN+L or via top right
corner menu) and the lock screen is engaged (that is, lock screen clock shade
drops down and screen fades to dark). Pressing ENTER brings back the lock
screen and the password is prompted.

4) What happens:
First Win + L lets the system in a half locked state in which the contents of
the desktop are seen although no interaction is possible. A second Win + L
correctly invokes the lock screen.

[Bug 1799430] [NEW] Icon dock visible on lock screen

2018-10-23 Thread Wolf Rogner

[Bug 1798556] Re: gnome-shell lockup when using MySQL Workbench for Ubuntu 18.04

2018-10-23 Thread vans163
Indeed I tried all them. Also I did not reboot my system after this
happened.

If it makes a different I got this same bug about 6 months ago much more
constantly, whatever version of Gnome/mutter/etc was in Ubuntu 18.04 at
that time. So definitely some forward progress was made as it happens
MUCH less frequently. But still happens.

[Bug 1712866] Re: icons from qt applications disappear after screen lock/sleep

2018-10-23 Thread Snaker
Confirmed on clean Ubuntu 18.04 installation, GNOME 3.28.2.

Now I'm testing the following fix, looks work:
1. Update everything with Software Updater.
2. Install GNOME tweaks (if not installed).
3. Open Tweaks -> Extensions, set Ubuntu appindicators ON.

[Bug 1798790] Re: Ubuntu 18.10 login screen never appears when using the Nvidia driver

2018-10-23 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. I think I can see the problem now.

The first thing that happens is that gdm3 tries to start a Wayland login
screen ('gnome-shell' process) and fails because the Nvidia driver
doesn't support KMS:

Oct 23 11:59:14 efthimios-GA-78LMT-USB3 gnome-shell[1688]:
meta_kms_resources_init failed: Calling drmModeGetResources() failed, assuming
we have no outputs
Oct 23 11:59:14 efthimios-GA-78LMT-USB3 gnome-shell[1688]: Failed to create
backend: No GPUs with outputs found

That is not a bug. What it should do next (and does on my machine) is
then try again to start the login screen using X instead. However I
can't see that in your log. You might have something odd installed or
preventing the fallback from working.

Please:

1. Report the bug to the gdm developers here:

   https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/issues

and then tell us the new bug ID.

2. Try this as a workaround: edit /etc/gdm3/custom.conf and uncomment
the line:

   #WaylandEnable=false

2018-10-23 Thread Efthimios Chaskaris
@seb128 Sorry, I will remove it.

** Description changed:

- "Started bpfilter" is located just under "Started Gnome Desktop
- Manager". There is unusual Network activity during that time. The light
- of the WiFi adapter is blinking a lot.
+ There is unusual Network activity during that time. The light of the
+ WiFi adapter is blinking a lot.

[Bug 1799266] Re: gnome-shell uses 44% cpu when simply moving windows

2018-10-23 Thread Fredrik Öhrström
Thank you! After reading through the reference bugs, it seems like you
have a bit of a handful here.

I have temporarily switch back to unity since the stuttering of movies
and general slugginesh due to gnome-shell is not bearable. But let me
know if you need testing and I will switch back and test any solutions
you have created.

2018-10-23 Thread Sebastien Bacher
@Efthimios, well, your description still doesn't make sense, it should
start with a statement of the problem, like "after installating the
nvidia driver my computer doesn't reach the login screen but is stucked
on a screen with those messages" if that's what is happening?

""Started bpfilter" is located just under "Started Gnome Desktop
Manager" doesn't state what the problem is in any understandable way...
