1. Use the monitor as only display. When watching movies, or sometimes when
working.
2. Use the monitor as primary display and the laptop monitor as secondary
display.

Now this works nearly perfectly using the display manager except for one
thing. Every time I switch back from only using the monitor (laptop
display disabled) to using the laptop display as a second screen – I
need to rearrange the displays. By default they are side-by-side but I
always want the monitor above the laptop display.

Especially since the resolution and everything else (like using the
monitor as primary display when it’s plugged in) is already remembered,
it would be cool if the layout can also be remembered.

Usually we handle one configuration per displays combination. So if you

But in your case, we wouldn't know whether you're modifying the current
configuration, or creating a new one.

The only thing I would guess is that mutter (which loads and saves the
configuration) doesn't remember the position of the display you turn
off, dropping it from the configuration. It should probably include it
in the ~/.config/monitors.xml file, with its previous position, even if
disabled.

That way, re-enabling it would pop it back in the same location.

Yep, it seems to drop the position. Because when I switch from:
Monitor primary, laptop secondary
to
Monitor secondary, laptop primary
the configuration is properly remembered. That is, the external monitor is
always correctly above the laptop.

It’s just when switching to »Mirror« or »Off« and then back to one of
Primary/Secondary that the positioning is reset.

So basically yes, it would be good if the last used positioning could
not only be remembered when switching between the two/multiple-screen
setups, but also when there’s only a one-screen setup so that it’s
properly restored when switching back to the multiple-screen one.

Thanks!

[Bug 1862081] Re: xorg resizes framebuffer when playing fullscreen video over and over again

2020-02-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report. I think this is related to a family of
scaling bugs in gnome-shell I've only discovered recently:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/merge_requests/1004
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/issues/849

Those are not this bug, but I think it's related whereby display scaling
is confusing mutter/gnome-shell into creating textures of the wrong
size.

[Bug 1862081] [NEW] xorg resizes framebuffer when playing fullscreen video over and over again

2020-02-05 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When I play a video with mpv (or e.g. Firefox), it works just fine.

When this video is fullscreened (e.g. in mpv by pressing f), the screen
quickly turns off, and switches resolution modes in such a rate the
screen is unusable.

The native resolution of the screen is 1440p, but Xorg somehow increases
the size to 3424x1926 for the fullscreen, then quickly switches back to
1440p, before increasing it again.

As soon as the video is de-fullscreened (by pressing f again in mpv, or
esc in Firefox), the funny resolution switching stops and the system is
usable again.

This also happens with the modesetting 2d-driver. This does not happen
with Wayland.

This can be seen in the Xorg-log:
[20.215] (II) intel(0): EDID vendor "JDI", prod id 0
[20.215] (II) intel(0): Printing DDC gathered Modelines:

lead to less power savings than a non-reduced-size. Try to increase

[Bug 1861991] Re: upgraded to focal yesterday, I've got no control panel, my theme is weird, and alt-tab isn't working

2020-02-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Good to hear.

The Mesa issue seems to have been resolved 12 hours ago.

The remaining Alt-Tab issue seems to be caused by your system settings:

b'org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings' b'switch-windows' b"['disabled']"
b'org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings' b'switch-windows-backward' b"['disabled']"

So you can fix that via the GUI in Settings > Devices > Keyboard
Shortcuts. Or use the 'gsettings' or 'dconf' commands.

[Bug 1860793] Re: Severe freezes that begin with minor stutters

2020-02-05 Thread Douglas Silva
I have been trying to reproduce it in the last days, but I couldn't. I
managed to get nearly 100% use of swap space again, while simultaneously
using Nautilus and Eye of GNOME (which is what I was doing at the exact
moment the freezes began), but it didn't happen again. Nothing changed
about my workload. I have the same applications open, consuming the same
usual amount of resources.

This seems to be a tricky one to reproduce, but I'll keep trying. By the
way, I'm attaching the lspci command output.

[Bug 1861340] Re: All bitmap fonts no longer visible after upgrade 19.10 -> Focal (development)

2020-02-05 Thread Jonathan Hartley
I succeeded with the process of converting a bitmap font into a vector
format with embedded bitmaps, which Pango will display. It took me hours
to figure out, so for anyone else:

Use fontforge, as described here:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/pango/issues/386#note_570411

The gotcha is that once you've installed the resulting font, then it
displays invisibly in font selection dialogs. However, don't give up
there! If you click around blindly to select the font you want, then the
font displays correctly in gnome-terminal, including all size
variations, with bold and italic variants.

There is some residual weirdness in that selecting a font size that is
not defined in the bitmap (e.g. when using 'ctrl-+'), the terminal goes
completely blank instead of falling back to another font.

For me, using fonttosfnt, as also described in that thread, had many
serious issues (eg the resulting font only preserved the bitmap's
smallest size variant)

[Bug 1862056] [NEW] Theme: use other exported colors

2020-02-05 Thread Frederik Feichtmeier
Public bug reported:

Adwaita and Yaru both export colors at the top of their CSS file from within
this source files:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/blob/master/gtk/theme/Adwaita/_colors-public.scss#L84
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/blob/gtk-3-24/gtk/theme/Adwaita/_colors-public.scss

gnome-software uses some of those colors in their in-app CSS that overwrites
the global gtk theme:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-software/blob/master/src/gtk-style.css

Most likely those are the correct colors. In three cases sadly not and
it is too late to get an upstream change for 20.04 now because gnome is
already in UI freeze for this cycle:

1) The round checkmarks inside the App boxes that show that the app is
installed are orange instead of green, which is semantically wrong since
they are not selected and should instead show that you successfully
installed that app:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-software/blob/master/src/gtk-style.css#L12
Change
.installed-icon {
color: @theme_selected_bg_color;
}
to
.installed-icon {
color: @success_color;
}
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/blob/gtk-3-24/gtk/theme/Adwaita/_colors-public.scss#L84
-> exported to:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/blob/gtk-3-24/gtk/theme/Adwaita/gtk-contained.css#L2021

2) The little [1] boxes inside the "stackswitcher" in the headerbar (it's
actually a buttonbox in this case, but this is offtopic) that show up if you
are either installing X apps or have X updates would be orange, if we would not
"hack" a bg box-shadow over them to make them green. This is first of all a
dirty hack and secondly there are little orange pixels showing up at the
rounding
Change
.counter-label {
...
...
background-color: mix(@theme_selected_bg_color,
@theme_selected_fg_color, 0.3);
...
...
...
}

To
.counter-label {
...
...
background-color: @success_color;
...
...
...
}
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-software/blob/master/src/gtk-style.css#L422

3) The "given" stars are not visible in both Adwaita and Yaru dark. For some
reason, upstream transparentizes them into oblivion with the "shade-function".
The enabled stars should just use the theme's fg color:
Change
.star-enabled,
.star-enabled:disabled {
color: shade(@theme_fg_color, 0.8);
}
to
.star-enabled,
.star-enabled:disabled {
color: @theme_fg_color;
}
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-software/blob/master/src/gtk-style.css#L412

Thank you very much in advance! I try to get this into gnome-shell's
upstream repo in the next cycle

[Bug 1850932] Re: [SRU] Backport 2.62.3-2

2020-02-05 Thread Iain Lane
It looks like the glib2.0/i386 regressions are actually real. I tried
locally and reproduced them. I then tried 2.62.4 and the tests pass
there. So I think I'll rev this SRU.

[Bug 1862006] [NEW] dock vanishes on primary monitor after locking screen if full screen windows are active on secondary monitor

2020-02-05 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I have a laptop system with an additional secondary monitor. I have the
Dock configured to show up only on my primary (laptop) screen.

When locking the screen with Super+L, and logging back in, the windows
on my primary (laptop) screen get automatically resized to take up the
full screen and the Dock on the left vanishes.

This only happens when I have full screen windows displayed on my
secondary monitor before locking the screen.

In order to reveal the Dock again on the primary screen, I need to
hide/show desktop (Super+D twice) or minimize/reactivate the full-screen
app on my secondary monitor.

This started happening after upgrading Ubuntu 19.04 to 19.10.

The gnome-shell version reported by the gnome-shell --version command is 3.34.1
The GNOME version reported by the GNOME control center in the "About" section
is 3.34.2

[Bug 387957] Re: Improve Save As Dialog Box (focus issues)

2020-02-05 Thread Dave
Agreed. yaztromo identified the frustration well. I've been living
with this in Mint Cinnamon for years, and still can't seem to get used
to it. Thanks for the Alt+N shortcut (works in English/US version).
Maybe that'll help me stop cursing at my computer every time I save a
file.

Returning the focus to the filename after using the mouse (or touchpad)
to navigate into a folder would be ideal. The only reason to use the
find is when input is solely from keyboard.

the dist-upgrader refused to upgrade, bailing out with something about a

[Bug 1861507] Re: Wacom Tablet not recognized in Settings/by System

2020-02-05 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

Some extra questions/things to check

- Can you tar /var/log/dist-upgrade/ and add it to the bug?

- What's the output of
$ dpkg -l | grep gnome-control-center ?

- could you do
$ apt policy > sources.log
and add sources.log to the bug?

[Bug 1861991] Re: upgraded to focal yesterday, I've got no control panel, my theme is weird, and alt-tab isn't working

2020-02-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
This is concerning.

My first thought is: There are technically multiple bugs being reported
here. If they have different causes then that can mean it's difficult to
declare the lot resolved.

My second thought is that gnome-shell hasn't yet been upgraded in focal.
It's the same series as is in eoan so in theory we should be able to
reproduce this by upgrading to just eoan.

It seems you installed 16.04 originally, but were you coming from 18.04
this time?

[Bug 1861481] Re: language-options causes live CD sessions to be untranslated

2020-02-05 Thread Alkis Georgopoulos
The reason that this regression doesn't affect ubuntu-desktop, might be
that unlike LightDM, GDM doesn't have that Ubuntu-specific patch to use
/usr/share/language-tools/language-options.

So, I subscribed "lightdm (Ubuntu)" to the affected packages, in case we
just want to drop the Ubuntu-specific patch, and that way make lightdm
not pass LANGUAGE when it shouldn't.

I think that this won't address the source of the regression, but it
will make the problem not appear in flavors that use lightdm which
should be good enough.

** Also affects: lightdm (Ubuntu)
