* Switch user again, and return to original user

At this point, text and icons in the menubar / sidebar are corrupted.
Text and icons in normal windows appear correctly. I have attached a

[Bug 1876647] [NEW] Nautilus search in gnome-shell performance regression

2020-05-03 Thread Michael Gratton
Public bug reported:

Under 19.10, the Nautilus search provider returned near-instant results
when searching in GNOME shell's activities, for both standard top-level
folders like "Downloads", but also when returning results for files and
directories deeper down.

Under 20.04, it takes ~10 seconds to start showing results, even when
just searching for Downloads. It's a bit faster for a warm search, but
not by much. There is no difference if Nautilus is already running in
the background or not. Performing a type-to-find in a Nautilus window
proper is as as instantaneous as the shell search was in 19.10.

This is a substantial usability regression - I use the feature
constantly.

The only thing printed in the logs when performing a search is:

> May 04 12:40:39 blanchefort nautilus[232948]: Source ID 10873 was not
found when attempting to remove it

When fractional scaling is active and set to 125% (I only tested this

[Bug 1876474] [NEW] Dock disappears

2020-05-03 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

The Dock does not appear after the system went into "Blank Screen" (Standby) if
I had a fullscreen Youtube Video paused while it went into standby.
Pressing the super key twice brings the dock back.
Probably related to me using multiple monitors, with firefox fullscreen on one
of them.

I hope I somewhat correctly categorized the bug, never did this before.
If I should write firefox instead please let me know.

[Bug 1876641] [NEW] gnome-shell using almost 1GB of ram.

2020-05-03 Thread Robert
Public bug reported:

Gnome shell is the single largest resident memory user on my system.

It was hovering at ~700mb, then with a few minutes of use of the system
(nothing in particular, mostly shell windows, one google-chrome window)
- spiked to ~980mb or so, before retreating to 903m.

Even with 16gb of ram, that's a huge chunk of the system.

I've not been able to identify anything in particular that I'm doing
that triggers the growth.

In https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
shell/+bug/1856838/comments/5, it was suggested to open a new bug,
instead of adding to one of the several existing bugs for this. I'm
happy to help try and debug this, but it's not clear where to start.

[Bug 1875204] Re: .desktop files inside folders on the Desktop cannot be launched

2020-05-03 Thread Timur Tabi
So I'm confused. You say it's an upstream Gnome issue. The desktop-
icons developer says it's a Nautilus issue, since Nautilus handles
folders. Issues 158 and 184 imply that Nautilus is not going to
implement anything. Everyone is blaming everyone else. So who's really
responsible?

[Bug 1876630] [NEW] Application menu doesn't honour natural scroll on touchpad

2020-05-03 Thread Andy Jenkins
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce (Ubuntu 20.04, shell 3.36.1):
1. Enable 'natural scrolling' for the touchpad in mouse and keyboard settings.
2. Open 'Show Applications' -> 'All'
3. Scroll
4. Repeat 2 and 3 with natural scrolling unset

Expectation:
Scrolling 'up' (moving fingers up) moves application icons up with natural
scrolling enabled and down with natural scrolling disabled.

Actual outcome:
Scrolling 'up' moves the app icons down (and vice versa) regardless of the
natural scrolling setting for the touchpad.

The scrolling behaves as expected when a normal mouse is used (i.e.
natural scroll setting of mouse is obeyed).

[Bug 1876628] [NEW] App list not scrolling properly with touchpad

2020-05-03 Thread Andy Jenkins
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce (20.04), shell 3.36.1:

1. Open 'Show Applications' -> 'All'
2. Attempt to scroll through the pages using a touchpad.

Expected result:
Scrolls through pages of applications one at a time.

Actual result:
Scrolls to second page of applications but will go no further.
This happens whether two-finger or edge scrolling is used.

Using an actual mouse with a scroll wheel works as expected. Using this in
conjunction with the touchpad reveals horribly broken behaviour:
- Clicking on the 'dot' for any of the pages will let the touchpad scroll at
most one page in either direction, if the mouse is not moved
- Moving the physical mouse lets the 'momentum' of the touchpad scrolling
advance the list further as expected.

Incidentally, the application menu doesn't honour the 'natural
scrolling' setting for the touchpad in the mouse settings - I will file
a separate bug report for this but it may be of interest for whoever
looks at this.

[Bug 1876460] Re: No users appear in settings

2020-05-03 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Can't really tell. But it's obvious that you have the ability to
configure your user, and also did so. We don't have the information
needed to say if the configuration you did is of such a nature that
gnome-control-center ought to recognize it.

So if you take a newly created user (which g-c-c does recognize) and
change it in a similar way as you did with your original user, so g-c-c
no longer sees it, and let us know exactly what you did, then we have
something to take a stand on.

[Bug 1876589] [NEW] Gnome-todo will not reorder items on the list; items on the list remain in their initial position, forcing me to rename the items on the list.

2020-05-03 Thread Seija Kijin
Public bug reported:

Whenever I attempt to reorder items on my to-do list via dragging and
moving the items around, the items on the list revert to their original
positions instead of reordering.

This issue occurs whenever I perform the following steps:
1. Launch To-Do
2. Create a list of four items
3. Attempt to move the bottom item on the list to be between the first and
second items

Expected Results:
To-Do moves the item to be between the first and second items.

Actual Results:
To-Do keeps the items on the list in their initial positions.

[Bug 1716857] Re: nvidia-drm.modeset=1, gdm3 and optimus laptop results in no external monitors detected by Xorg

2020-05-03 Thread Jean-Pierre van Riel
Another correction. For the one workaround, switching to discrete
graphics in the BIOS only seemed to get past the initial gnome login.
But resuming from DPMS off/suspend, the same error loop happens even
when hybrid graphics is disabled in the BIOS.

Even worse, seems hardware acceleration ends up being disabled:

$ journalctl --no-hostname -b -p warning _COMM=gnome-shell
-- Logs begin at Wed 2019-02-06 14:13:52 SAST, end at Sun 2020-05-03 16:09:45

...
May 03 14:53:25 gnome-shell[6549]: setup_framebuffers: assertion 'width > 0'

The "EGL failed to allocate resources" error stops happening probably
because gnome-shell isn't even using hardware acceleration now.

I've also disabled all gnome shell extensions to avoid noise/errors in
the logs and will try weed out the problem better.

I checked `grep -C2 -E '(EE)|(WW)' /var/log/Xorg.0.log` and things seem
fine:

[45.181] (II) NVIDIA dlloader X Driver 440.59 Thu Jan 30 01:08:17 UTC 2020

[46.393] (II) Loading sub module "dri2"
[46.393] (II) LoadModule: "dri2"

Note, I've done no customisation to X config - trying to stick to
defaults.

xrandr confirms only one provider / hybrid is indeed off and Intel not
in use:

$ xrandr --listproviders
Providers: number : 1
Provider 0: id: 0x218 cap: 0x1, Source Output crtcs: 4 outputs: 6 associated
providers: 0 name:NVIDIA-0

I'm guessing the Lenovo P53 impliments a mux/switch to connect the
laptop panel to the NVidia card so that Intel is disabled in this mode.

And double checking, also no i915 modules are loaded:

$ lsmod | grep '^drm'
drm_kms_helper180224 1 nvidia_drm
drm 491520 10 drm_kms_helper,nvidia_drm

So there seems to be, on current Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS (fully up to date as
of today), a 4K / UHD 60Hz issue with Nvidia, as seen in X log

[45.228] (II) NVIDIA GLX Module 440.59 Thu Jan 30 01:05:38 UTC
2020

Lastly, I think due to `needs_root_rights=yes` in
/etc/X11/Xwrapper.config, X logs to /var/log/Xorg.0.log again instead of
the X without root which used to log at ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log

[Bug 1716857] Re: nvidia-drm.modeset=1, gdm3 and optimus laptop results in no external monitors detected by Xorg

2020-05-03 Thread Jean-Pierre van Riel
Apologies, continuing the comment above (mistakenly posted when adding
the log attachment). Let me retry.

Failure loop observed:

- Failed to blit shared framebuffer: EGL failed to allocate resources for the
requested operation.
- Failed to set CRTC mode 3840x2160: No such file or directory

To summarise and share my experience of it on a Lenovo P53 and some
quirks/workarounds:

- `sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall` got Nvidia 440.59 drivers installed.
- However, Nvidia modeset was not enabled as yet.

$ sudo cat /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modeset
N

- Blank external screen occurs with modeset=0 (disabled)
- Then, using `prime-select nvidia`, I tried to ensure nvidia was primary
- `prime-select nvidia` sets `options nvidia-drm modeset=1` but it's not
effective, even after I rebooted

~$ cat /lib/modprobe.d/nvidia-kms.conf
# This file was generated by nvidia-prime
# Set value to 0 to disable modesetting
options nvidia-drm modeset=1

- To make it effective, because modeset is done during initramfs part of boot,
I ran `sudo update-initramfs -u -k all`.
- It seems the prime-select option fails to trigger a intiramfs update
(probably should be filed as a separate bug)
- Regardless, the blank screen issue occured on my Lenovo P53 with or without
Nvidia KMS modeset enabled
- But one benefit of KMS modeset for Nvida is now the external display gets
properly recognised. /sys/class/drm/card1-HDMI-A-1/ now exists (was missing
with Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS default proprietary install) including the EDID data
being read properly and X getting the actual DPI of the screen correctly.

Without nvidia modeset, as seen in `journalctl -b _COMM=gdm-x-session |
grep -C2 -E '(EE)|(WW)'`:

(WW) NVIDIA(0): Unable to get display device for DPI computation.

With nvidia modeset:

(II) NVIDIA(0): Validated MetaModes:
(II) NVIDIA(0): "DFP-3:nvidia-auto-select"
(II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 3840 x 2160
(--) NVIDIA(0): DPI set to (139, 140); computed from "UseEdidDpi" X config

I've also found two workarounds to my issue.

1. Run a script that sets the frequency to 30HZ and then back to 60HZ
2. Switch to discrete only graphics in the BIOS

In most cases, when one is using a 2nd display, there's usually a
powersource available so the complexity of hybrid graphics isn't worth
it and I went with simply disabling hybrid graphics in the BIOS.

It's quite interesting that toggling the display refresh rate down to
30HZ and then back up to 60HZ seems to work around the problem of gnome-
shell mutter's "EGL failed to allocate resources for the requested
operation" bug.

To conclude, even with the root access workaround in place:

$ tail -n 2 /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config
# Added by xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-440
needs_root_rights=yes

I still had external display connection issues with 4K 60Hz.

This might need to be logged as different bug? I'm unsure it's GDM3s
fault given the root workaround was in place, but it's highly
related/similar.

Hi, thanks to everyone, especially Daniel for unpacking this issue.

I have had a very similar issue, where gnome shell fails to run my

While not sure it's exactly the same, it should still inform the
overall discussion about dealing with GDM3 + Mutter + proprietary Nvidia
drivers modeset problems.

To summarise and share my experience of it on a Lenovo P53 and some

- `sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall` got Nvidia 440.59 drivers installed.

[Bug 1852183] Re: [X11] copy/paste (clipboard) is broken in Ubuntu 19.10 & 20.04

2020-05-03 Thread jkelol111 [Nam]
I see this happening very frequently with screenshots...they seem to get
lost.

E.g: I use Ctrl+Prt Sc to get a screenshot of my entire display into my
clipboard, and moments later I cannot paste it into Discord because
somehow it got 'lost'. It takes several tries before the screenshot can
finally be pasted into Discord.

Also, one other thing I have noticed is that while taking the
screenshot, if I can hear the screenshot 'click' sound, it will almost
certainly fail, whereas if I don't hear the 'click' sound, it copies it
successfully into the clipboard.

I have seen this happening on Ubuntu 19.10 and 20.04 (currently on
20.04, seems worse than on 19.10)

[Bug 1870736] Re: [nvidia] Screen scaling 125% gives 200%

2020-05-03 Thread Fusion
more test on 20.04:
100%-->125% auto200% and larger desktop area than screen
disable fractional scale--> 100% and not responding at all
ctrl+alt+f1 -->login screen/login --> 200% and larger desktop area than screen,
responding
trying again
200%-->100% black screen
ctrl+alt+f1 -->login screen/login --> black screen again
ctrl+alt+f1 -->login screen/login -->200% and larger desktop area than screen,
responding
reboot--> 200%, normal desktop area
200%-->100% ok

-

On ubuntu 19.10, every fractional scale value is ok exept from video playing.
Apps tested fail on full screen:
videos on youtube through firefox, smplayer, vlc: normal window->ok,
maximize->ok, full screen->black

ps. If there is anything I can test, as far as I understand how to do
it, I'll be glad to do it.

[Bug 1875326] Re: Can't double click items in icon view

2020-05-03 Thread rod
It seems that on clicking an item the focus is temporarily set to a
different item further up the page before setting it to the selected
item. This can cause the page to scroll up to display the temporarily
focused item before scrolling down to show the selected item. Hence the
jump.

[Bug 1876569] [NEW] Dock settings do not apply correctly

2020-05-03 Thread Dylan Dunn
Public bug reported:

I went to try out the different dock settings such as use on all
displays and the position on the displays and tried use on all displays,
but when I tried to switch back to showing the dock on only one display,
upon clicking the display I wanted it to show up on, the dock persisted
on both displays and the dropdown menu showed all displays again. No
matter what I choose, it shows the dock on both displays. Sometimes the
dropdown menu will have the display chosen, but will still have the dock
on both displays. More often then not it will have all displays shown as
selected in the dropdown menu and have the dock on both screens. Some
things of note are that I have identical monitors and the problem
persists after a restart.

Basically

1. I opened the settings app.
2. I navigated to appearance and selected all monitors for where to display the
dock.
3. I tried to switch back to my main display, and it did not work.

[Bug 1876532] Re: Badly positioned icons in the app grid

2020-05-03 Thread Douglas Silva
Correction:

It's not about where the cursor is placed when the animation ends, it's
about whether the cursor is moving or not.

Keep the cursor still, as I said previously, and the bug doesn't happen.

Keep the cursor moving while the sliding animation is running, and the
problem is nearly always reproducible.

[Bug 1876471] Re: Trash desktop icon is not translated

2020-05-03 Thread Duke
Apparently this isn't only a problem of the desktop icons package after
all. In Files "Trash" is translated as expected, with the exception of
the breadcrumb item (see the attached screenshot).

Should I assign this bug report to another package? If so, what package
should it be assigned to?

** Attachment added: ""Trash" is translated to "Prullenbak" (in Dutch) except
on the desktop and in the breadcrumb (Files)."

[Bug 1749779] Re: System freeze when going back and forth fullscreen mode with Firefox

2020-05-03 Thread Tim Richardson
For me in 20.04, bug is definitely still present. I have earlyoom active, and
32 gb a few seconds of "freeze" (which is not really a freeze) earlyoom
activates and nukes a few things, including Firefox, which brings back
interactive response. It also killed Chrome and Remmina, which was irritating,
but that's what earlyoom is there to do; better than minutes of no keyboard
response.
Alt F2 seem to work after a few seconds too, which allows restart of the gnome
shell.
I will comment on the upstream bug.

[Bug 1845801] Re: [nvidia] Automatic login fails and then all subsequent logins fail. Killing gnome-session-binary fixes it, or just not using automatic login.

2020-05-03 Thread slamdunk
Confirmed here with Ubuntu 20.04 and GTX 1060. As already suggested I
used the fix:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

to

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet"

in the file:

sudo nano /etc/default/grub

and after:

sudo update-grub

which worked for me.
