On bionic, it's in 'Suggests', but on focal it moved into 'Recommends',

[Bug 1881687] Re: Desktop is blank after logging in without a monitor attached

2020-06-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. Yes indeed the X server has zero monitors attached, but still
has a usable desktop area of 1024x768. For gnome-shell this just means
it won't draw any panel/launcher etc. Because it prefers to only do that
on the primary monitor, which there is none.

Next please report the bug to the gnome-shell developers at:

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues

and then tell us the new issue ID.

[Bug 1877075] Re: gnome-shell crashed at xcb_io.c:260: poll_for_event: Assertion `!xcb_xlib_threads_sequence_lost'' failed

2020-06-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

This is the #1 crasher of gnome-shell in Ubuntu 20.04, though it's
duplicated across multiple problem reports according to locale:

  https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/4de3d315d9df1c9699bda54beafa8d52053c
  https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/2251b638f7a6167772f922dc5916740522c5c22b

  https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/4b78bc9730e8681f0c42fc2ecea14d03544394f0

  [Test Case]

None known. The plan is to just continue monitoring crash reports.
Still, we are confident this is the fix because:

- * The offending source code in libx11 tells us it is :) and
- * The crash only started in Ubuntu with gnome-shell 3.34, which is the
-exact release in which XInitThreads was removed from mutter.
+  * The offending source code in libx11 tells us it is :) and
+  * The crash only started in Ubuntu with gnome-shell 3.34, which is the
+    exact release in which XInitThreads was removed from mutter.

  [Regression Potential]

Low. We add a single function call that tells libX11 to enable thread
- safety. This same function call is one we had in bionic, cosmic and
+ safety. This same function call as one we had in bionic, cosmic and
  disco.

The path which the symlink points to is:

and not:

/share/smart-notifier/smart-notifier

But with that said, the smart-notifier package in focal is indeed
broken.

[Bug 1881812] [NEW] gdm can't open session for ldap users with usernames that begin with a number

2020-06-02 Thread tylerecouture
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

with ubuntu-desktop and libnss-ldapd

Trying to log in to the desktop environment when the username (e.g
9912345) begins with a number results in a black screen, and then quits
back to the log in screen.

Here is the error:
`...gdm-password][5010]: pam_systemd(gdm-password:session): Failed to get user
record: Invalid argument`

However, these users can log-in via ssh, and via TTY without issue.

This error does not occur if I log in with other users, without a number
(e.g. test.user)

Also, the error does not occur if I switch to LightDM. With LightDM, a
username such as 9912345 can login to the desktop desktop environment.

Re: [Bug 1858414] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGTRAP in ObjectInstance::disassociate_js_gobject() from std::function::operator() from ObjectInstance::remove_wrapped_gobjects_

2020-06-02 Thread Dougal
This has not happened since I've installed the latest version. Please close
the bug. As far as I'm concerned it would appear to be fixed even if you
are not aware.
Thanks.

Sure. For gnome-shell processes after login, I see:

[Bug 1793007] Re: gnome-disk-image-mounter creates loopback device but it is not mounted automatically

2020-06-02 Thread Dave Rove
This bug is still valid in Ubuntu 20.04.

The utility creates the loopback device OK, but the mount sometimes
works and sometimes silently fails. This utility has no debug or
verbosity option, so there's no way for the end user to give useful
information about the failure. That's something that could be remedied
first if the devs have no idea why it fails.

I mean, it doesn't sound logical for me for the error tracking system to
not be able to distinguish between issues with extensions and ones with

[Bug 968213] Re: Too many icons in Gnome Shell Activities Overview require ellipses

2020-06-02 Thread Coeur Noir
There has been many proposals to upstream throughout years for fixing
that stupid and ridiculous ellipsis.

Upstream seems not to want to merge those because these days they are
working on a new app grid - where ellipsis is still a thing.

It's been years they don't care.

Maybe that should be fixed only downstream in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and too
bad for others ???

[Bug 1236619] Re: gvfs smb / cifs file copy performance is terribly slow

2020-06-02 Thread Jean-Pierre van Riel
Apologies, launchpad didn't keep the neatly tab separated column format,
but hopefully the script can help others to test.

Attached png of side-by-side comparison of script output.

Only the latency for accessing a single 4K block doesn't seem to differ
too much, but for every other mult-block sequential IO read, in terms of
latency, bandwidth and IOPS, GVFS is over 10 times slower than CIFS.

While I know fuse mounts (userspace filesystems) will be understandably
slower than kernel space mounts, more than 10 times slower is
significant and indicates there's inefficiencies / room for improvement.

About This Computer

I am using GNU Image Manipulation Program version 2.8.14 on Ubuntu 14.10 x64 on
my AMD Phonom II X4 machine packed with 8GB DDR3 RAM and more than the
recommended amount of SWAP-Space found in multiple locations throughout my PC,
and even though I have all this caching space and more plus a powerful
processor, GIMP still eats my computer's system resources alive even while
doing some quick editing and touch-ups, specifically when using the Heal tool -
The window will freeze up and continue what it's doing in the background, but
for that time being, it won't let me do much besides that.

It has now gotten to a point where GIMP uses so many system resources all at
one time where it locks up my (USB 2.0) keyboard for all apps and won't let me
use the keyboard at all until GIMP is done doing what it is doing.

I have even switched to the LowLatency Linux Kernel to help speed up my PC and
keep only needed background tasks while using minimal RAM.

See below for a HardInfo chart I pasted stating my Operating System
information:

-Version-

Hi, to report, also noticed gvfs smb mount being over 10x slower in many
cases depending on the read IO pattern. Seems GVFS alls a lot of
latency. Summary of benchmark via fio:

I may be nave or ignorant, you guess, but 20some programs running on
Gnome daily work just fine. so my guess is that they programmed their
applications for Gnome and it works. Why LO be an exception?.

[Bug 1866194] Re: External audio device shows up in the sound output options but the sound keeps being emitted from the internal laptop speaker, or none at all.

2020-06-02 Thread Pierre Equoy
Hi Salima,

this bug has been identified as happening only for people who were
upgrading from a previous version of Ubuntu (that came with a previous
version of Pulseaudio). Daniel Van Vugt found a workaround (check
comments 18 and 19 above), and a fix has been made by the Pulseaudio
developers and is being reviewed (see comment 41 above).

In your case, it seems the issue happens on a fresh install, so I
believe this issue is different. Please file a new bug for this.

Thanks!

[Bug 1881687] [NEW] Desktop is blank after logging in without a monitor attached

2020-06-02 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

On Ubuntu 20.04, I have an AMD system with an integrated GPU (Ryzen 3 3200G
with Radeon Vega 8)
I am using lightdm instead of gdm3. My GPU is using the amdgpu driver. I have
no specific xorg.conf in place. I am using x11vnc to login and view the
desktop remotely. There is no monitor attached.

After logging into lightdm's greeter, I am presented with a blank
desktop with the Focal Fossa background image and a mouse cursor, but no
other visible interface or windows. There is no menu bar at the top of
the desktop and no application bar on the left.

This all works perfectly fine if a monitor is attached before lightdm
(and thus Xorg) is started.

If I change the settings at login to use fvwm for my session it works
fine. This is also the case for Gnome Flashback mode (using metacity).
But the default of gnome-shell/mutter does not work without the monitor.
Nor does using Wayland.

help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

2020-06-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It appears this crash is probably caused by one or more buggy
extensions. It seems to practically never happens for most people using
20.04.

So please try removing some or all extensions to figure out which is to
blame.

The old batt-stat applet used to allow the user to show on the battery
icon a more accurate representation of battery life remaining, either in
percentage or estimated time remaining.

This functionality should also be configurable, if not the default, in
gnome power manager. Just because Gnome's apparent philosophy is to be
simplified for the user, does not mean we cannot expose extra
configuration to more advanced users in the places where they
traditionally look - the preferences.

Sorry if this is a dupe, I'm not used to Gnome's bugzilla installation.

Ideally both.

Specifically an option for an overlay on the panel icon to either
display battery remaining in time (hrs and mins) or a percentage of
battery capacity.

For the purpose that it avoids having to mouseover the g-p-m icon.

We can't do this just yet. We need the new applet infrastructure work so
we can add ourselves to a panel like g-p-m can do with GtkStatusIcon and
also be resizable and appendable like an applet can be. Ryan Lortie is
working on the new applet stuff, you'll have to ask him how it's
progressing.

Richard: will this new applet infrastructure work also allow more fine-

Also, is there any chance of GNOME doing the colours based on time
remaining rather than percentage remaining? The indicator on my 6-hour-
life Thinkpad turns red when it has more usable time remaining than some
laptops when fully charged!

[Bug 1734095]

2020-06-02 Thread Dimass036
Have recently faced the same issue on Ubuntu 18.04. It occurs rather
frequently, sometimes, within ten minutes. Previously, it has never
occurred. Same message is printed in the logs.

Upgrade to Ubuntu 20.04, which ships GNOME Shell 3.36.2, did not help.

There is an immediate workaround, documented on the unix stack exchange/
Switching to login screen (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and back to the main
(Ctrl+Alt+F2) helps: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/502315

[Bug 1880337] Re: Screen lock won't work

2020-06-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Yuri, this sounds like a possible duplicate of some existing bug (like
maybe bug 184 or bug 1877760). To help us confirm that please:

1. Run this command and send us the output:

   gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.shell

2. Follow these instructions:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Responses#Missing_a_crash_report_or_having_a_.crash_attachment
