[Bug 1896637] Re: system booting is too slow. Application like chrome, spotify, Libre Office, etc open too slow.
Thanks. I can't see anything obvious in that log. This makes me think something is running fundamentally too slow; either the CPU or the disk. To check the disk speed please run a benchmark in the 'Disks' app, and/or use: sudo hdparm -t /dev/sda and tell us the results. The CPU sounds like it might be restricted by thermald. Please try removing the file: /etc/thermald/thermal-conf.xml because it sounds like there's a problem in that file. ** Package changed: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) => ubuntu ** Summary changed: - system booting is too slow. [Bug 1897614] [NEW] Icons randomly disappear from desktop in Focal Gnome
You have been subscribed to a public bug: After I upgraded from Eoan to Focal, a strange behavior started with the desktop icons. I have a few .txt files in ~/Desktop dir which appear as icons on the desktop. After some time some of them disappear (not all of them). They still exist, I can navigate to them using Files and open them in text editor with no problem, but they are gone from the desktop so I cannot double-click to open them. >From 5 files, 1 or 2 normally disappear. I have not yet related this with anything else (like sleeping / waking for exmaple). If I invoke Alt-F2 and run "r" for gnome shell to reload, the icons appear again, for some time. [Bug 1896804] Re: CD/DVD drive detected as read only, command line and GUI programs
Hi, sorry for your drive. But good for Linux burn programs that MS-Windows does not know something essential about drive error messages which we Linuxers don't know. > the srange this is that if you use the Disks program in utilities. That's probably a message from the kernel via systemd and lsblk. Although the Linux kernel is willing to apply disk write commands to overwritable media in optical drives, it mostly treats them as CD-ROM. That's why there are burn programs in userspace which send SCSI commands directly to the drive, circumventing the buffered block device layers of the kernel. And that's why much of the kernel's cdrom and sr driver code had few motivation to follow the technical evolution from CD to DVD and BD. (The relation of cdrom and sr is funny enough. cdrom was meant as abstraction of the various hunchbacked CD drives of the mid 1990s with proprietary controllers and command sets. sr represents for cdrom the then rare SCSI drives which are now the only survivors at PATA, SATA and USB. Meanwhile code execution hops forth and back between both drivers which are actually only one.) Well, now i have to think what to do with my code change to tolerate all 6,28,XX error codes ... [Bug 1883174] Re: Some desktop icons disappear
@rastersoft-gmail Sergio, I went back through the merge request in more detail and have tried these steps : - Download the patch code from the merge request - Installed Meson - Deleted the folder ($HOME/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/desktop-icons@csoriano) - Unzipped the patch and built the patch with Meson/Ninja (it did recreate the local directory) - Rebooted - Went into tweaks and re-enabled the extension After all this I did not notice any change in behavior. The problem is very easy to replicate in Ubuntu 20.04. Just place a simple text file on the desktop. Double click to open it and then change the file. When you hit save it breaks/hides all the icons and you must reboot or hit ALT+F2 then R to fix. Hi. My mistake. I had, some time ago, needed to install one package from focal-proposed, and to do this had turned off letting synaptic etc from showing all proposed updates by adding a file in /etc/apt/preference.d. I'd forgotten about this. sudo aptitude -t focal-proposed showed that mutter updates did indeed exist, so I manually installed mutter/focal-proposed and gir1.2-mutter-6/focal-proposed (which each installed one other file). [Bug 1896637] Re: system booting is too slow. Application like chrome, spotify, Libre Office, etc open too slow.
The system booting too slow is different to applications launching too slow. Which issue would you like this bug to be about? If you would like the bug to be about the system booting too slow then please provide a shorter, cleaner boot log by rebooting, logging in and then immediately running: journalctl -b0 > freshboot.txt and attach the resulting file here. If you would like the bug to be about apps launching slowly then please run: top and tell us what processes are using the most CPU. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1896637 Title: system booting is too slow.
