I think should be included by default the possibility to use a desktop with

A desktop for just a wallpaper is nonsense.

I am trying to find the issue. For now, the suspect except for the

design to allow the gnome extensions to wreck the whole desktop.

[Bug 1913742] [NEW] Fractional scaling: bottom half of screen black on external monitor disconnect

2021-01-29 Thread Dave Musicant
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 20.04.1, on a Lenovo Thinkpad T14s. I've got fractional
scaling enabled (125%) with Gnome.

I regularly plug into an external monitor with an HDMI connection, and
run both screens (the external monitor and the built-in laptop one)
side-by-side. With that setup, I don't use fractional scaling, because
my main external monitor is easier to read.

When I unplug the HDMI cord from my external monitor to go back to
working on the laptop, sometimes the bottom half of the laptop screen
goes black. The mouse cursor is still visible if I move it to that
region, but nothing is visible in the entire lower portion of my screen.

I've been running 20.04 on this laptop since last August, and it didn't
used to be a problem. The problem first occurred perhaps a month or two
ago, but was rare and sporadic. It has been happening more and more
frequently, and is now at the point that most of the time this problem
occurs.

Once I have unplugged the cable and I'm stuck with a black bottom half
of the screen, I can resolve it by disabling fractional scaling, but of
course, that disables fractional scaling. At that point, any attempts to
reenable fractional scaling either bring the black region back again, or
start causing all kinds of other instabilities. Restarting Gnome at this
point contributes to the mess. The only stable workaround I've found
(apart from rebooting) is to plug the laptop back into the external
monitor again, switch the configuration to single display mode, and then
unplug. This works but is of course cumbersome.

Is there more information I can supply that would be useful?

[Bug 1913218] Re: Obscure shortcut selector behaviour

2021-01-29 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Hey, Daniel, please don't sound as if I had questioned the whole
workflow for your great work with triaging desktop bugs. It was
certainly not my intention to do that; my apologies if it sounded
otherwise.

What I brought up was that tag - and the way you said in comment #3 you
use it occasionally. In summary, what I want to say is simply: Use that
strategy with caution.

As regards the possible approach I mentioned, let's take bug #1913222 as
an example (with the same bug reporter as this one).

- Upstream in nature (and reported upstream)
- Low importance
- Very unlikely to be patched in Ubuntu
- "groovy" tag even if the behavior is not specific to groovy

That combo makes me think that "won't fix" would be a proper status
right now. I don't see how it's useful to keep it open in Ubuntu's bug
tracker for a few months, and then close it in July due to EOL (which
would be a reason hard to understand for the bug reporter, who will most
likely see the same thing in hirsute).

[Bug 1913681] Re: multiple monitors with mixed DPI not scaling correctly

2021-01-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It sounds like the most problematic apps are going through Xwayland.
Actually I've seen similar issues with poor scaling of Xwayland apps and
need to make some time to find out what the mechanism is that makes them
scale correctly on Xorg but not on Xwayland...

In the meantime, Firefox should be fixable by adding a new line to
/etc/environment:

  MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1

and then reboot.

Chrome support is coming, but I've read isn't quite ready yet:

  https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item=Wayland-Chromium-2020
  https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/chromium#Native_Wayland_support

Although native Wayland support is all longer term. In the shorter term
I wonder if we can fix Xwayland/mutter to communicate the correct
scaling factor.
