[Bug 1944477] [NEW] Wayland - double monitor: edge tiled windows change position after suspension

2021-09-21 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

- System: Ubuntu 21.04 (experienced also with Ubuntu 21.10)
- Wayland session
- Hardware setup: laptop connected to 2 extra monitors
  - Laptop screen: off
  - Samsung (left monitor): on
  - LG (right monitor): on

- DESCRIPTION
Edge tiled windows can be placed in a different position after suspension. See
this video example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xL1VlzDh2CU

In the video you can see that Gedit is placed on the left side of the
monitor on the right. After suspension Gedit is moved to the left side
of the left screen.

It looks that this bug happens only with windows tiled at the edges between two
monitors.
Unfortunately it seems to be random, it happens often but not every time.

- REPRODUCE THE BUG
1. Left monitor: place a window using the tiling window functionality on the
right side.
2. Right monitor: place a window using the tiling window functionality on the
left side.
3. Suspend the computer.
4. Switch on the computer. Now it's possible the one or both windows are in a
different position.

- NOTES
This problem is related to Wayland session but I don't know exactly which
components (maybe Mutter?).
Please let me know if some specific commands is needed.

 Status: New

[Bug 1944468] [NEW] Electron applications all crash upon launch

2021-09-21 Thread Erich Eickmeyer 
Public bug reported:

Just a few weeks ago, I noticed the .deb version of Visual Studio Code
crashing upon launch. I also noticed Element (matrix client) also would
crash. The only thing these applications have in common is electron. I
was hoping this would get noticed by someone and that the issue would be
figured out, but I guess that person had to be me.

Erroneously-filed bug 1943568 exhibits the same issues. Experimenting
with Visual Studio Code provided this:

When either application was provided "--no-sandbox" at the command line, they
would run normally. However, Element does not pass that via command line, so I
was unable to use the workaround for that.

Upon investigating the runtime dependencies for Element, Atom, and
VSCode, the one thing they had in common was libgtk-3-0, and the date of
2021-09-03 for publishing coincides with the time in which these errors
started to appear.

Another workaround, other than the "--no-sandbox" usage, is to use the
snap version of the apps if available, or flatpak. These provide their
own versions of these dependencies, which tells me these .deb-based
applications are affected by libgtk-3-0.

Granted, those applications are not in the Ubuntu repository, however,
many people (including myself) rely on those to function correctly. It
would be very bad if Electron apps failed to function when 21.10 is
released.

[Bug 1944431] Re: Changing the resolution while in the activites overview changes to the desktop

2021-09-21 Thread Andrew Hayzen
** Description changed:

  What Happened
- 1) Installed the package gnome-session (ensuring it is the latest version)
- 2) At gdm picked "GNOME" and not "Ubuntu"
- 3) Reboot and login to the desktop
- 4) Notice that initially the activity overview is shown (correctly)
- 5) Then within a second or so, something causes the desktop to be focused and
activity overview closed (incorrect)
-
- Further notes:
- - if you log out and log back in again, it doesn't happen ?
- - if you wait on the gdm login for a long period of time (eg over a minute)
then it doesn't happen ?
- - this is *not* the Ubuntu session but the GNOME session
+ 1) Open GNOME Shell to the activities overview
+ 2) Change the resolution (eg if using a VM resize it)
+ 3) Notice that we switch to the desktop view

  What I expected to happen:
- At step 5 for the activity overview to stay and not switch to the desktop
until the user has interacted.
+ At step 3 to remain in the activities overview.

-
- I understand that the Ubuntu session with the dock enabled wants the desktop
to be the current state after login. But for the GNOME session with no
extensions enabled, the way that if one logs in quickly and something is
triggering the activity overview to be dismissed appears to be a bug.

[Bug 1944431] Re: gnome-session impish 40 update login quickly causes desktop rather than activites overview

2021-09-21 Thread Andrew Hayzen
OK, I've figured out what is going on. If you are on the activities
overview and you change the resolution of the VM it then goes back to
the desktop.

I'll see if there are any bugs upstream as it happens on Fedora rawhide
as well ...

[Bug 1944453] [NEW] PDF documents signed with DocuSign show the error message "The document contains no pages"

2021-09-21 Thread Peter
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
---

1. Open a document signed with DocuSign

Expected behaviour:
---

Document opens fine

Actual behaviour:
---

Evince refuses to display the document, with the error message "The
document contains no pages".

If document is opened with `pdftotext`, the output is:

```
Syntax Error: Gen inside xref table too large (bigger than INT_MAX)
Syntax Error: Invalid XRef entry 3
Syntax Error: Top-level pages object is wrong type (null)
Command Line Error: Wrong page range given: the first page (1) can not be after
the last page (0).
```

Other information
---

This appears to be a bug in libpoppler, described at
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/66636441/pdf2image-library-failing-
to-read-pdf-signed-using-docusign and
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/poppler/poppler/-/issues/1014 . I believe
that bumping the version of Poppler and/or Evince will solve the issue,
though I have no way to test this as compiling from source is a
significant undertaking.

I do not have a public sample document that I could share, but examples
of DocuSigned documents should be available online.

Ubuntu version: 20.04 LTS (up to date)
Evince version: 3.36.10 (official package)
Poppler version: 0.86.1-0ubuntu1 (official package)

On Ubuntu 21.04 the menu item doesn't report any errors, it simply does
nothing if libreoffice-base isn't installed.

[Bug 1944431] [NEW] gnome-session impish 40 update login quickly causes desktop rather than activites overview

2021-09-21 Thread Andrew Hayzen
Public bug reported:

What Happened
1) Installed the package gnome-session (ensuring it is the latest version)
2) At gdm picked "GNOME" and not "Ubuntu"
3) Reboot and login to the desktop
4) Notice that initially the activity overview is shown (correctly)
5) Then within a second or so, something causes the desktop to be focused and
activity overview closed (incorrect)

Further notes:
- if you log out and log back in again, it doesn't happen ?
- if you wait on the gdm login for a long period of time (eg over a minute)
then it doesn't happen ?
- this is *not* the Ubuntu session but the GNOME session

What I expected to happen:
At step 5 for the activity overview to stay and not switch to the desktop until
the user has interacted.

I understand that the Ubuntu session with the dock enabled wants the desktop to
be the current state after login. But for the GNOME session with no extensions
enabled, the way that if one logs in quickly and something is triggering the
activity overview to be dismissed appears to be a bug.

[Bug 1943857] Re: use downstream pop!_os patch for global theme switching

2021-09-21 Thread Muqtadir
Hi @seb128 and @vanvugt,

> I don't have the power to make it happen but would recommend as a first step
> you should create a formal merge request to the ubuntu/master branch here:
https://salsa.debian.org/gnome-team/gnome-shell/-/tree/ubuntu/master

I've asked the Pop!_OS maintainers of gnome-shell to upstream their
patch on their github issue-tracker and one of the maintainer replied
that he will do so (see: https://github.com/pop-os/gnome-
shell/issues/77).

>The description of the change and why it's needed is not really clear
there, you are going to need to provide more details if you want to see
the changes considered, also please use a merge request as pointed out
by Daniel

Sorry for being vague about the reasoning and description of the issue

*[Reason]
The Appearance-panel in gnome-control-center only switches GTK themes but not
GNOME-Shell theme. The possibility of also switching the GNOME-Shell was
mentioned in the sprint session of Yaru development during ubuntu 20.04 release
cycle. (quoting from the blogpost New Ubuntu Theme in Development for 20.04:
"In future, we would also like these settings to switch the theme for shell
elements, such as the top bar and notification bubbles. Achieving this without
requiring a logout each time will require additional work in GNOME Shell –
something we are investigating" see:
https://ubuntu.com/blog/new-ubuntu-theme-in-development-for-20-04)

[Impact]
Currently Yaru(light theme) is default for GTK and Yaru-dark(dark theme) is
default for GNOME-Shell theme. This change would make Yaru(light theme) the
default for both GTK and GNOME-Shell and give the desktop users the ability to
Fully switch between both Light and Dark themes from Appearance panel out of
the box without the need of using user-themes-gnome-shell-extension.

[Relevant Github discussion:]
see this discussion on Yaru's github discussions for more details:
https://github.com/ubuntu/yaru/discussions/2677

[Relevant Yaru PR:]

It seems not to be that easy any longer:

[Bug 1944412] [NEW] Nautilus keeps spawning new window when clicking on the launcher icon

2021-09-21 Thread Dylan Borg
Public bug reported:

When clicking on the launcher icon for nautilus, new instances keep
being started even when I had already launched an instance before. This
should only happen if I manually select the "new window" action. The
past behaviour was to restore back the last window used if there are
instances already running. Hovering on the launcher icon should also
show running instances but this no longer works. I can get the right
behaviour back if I keep fiddling with the nautilus .desktop file but
the bad behavior returns again if I restart my session without changing
the .desktop file again.

Please look into this as it got old really fast after upgrade.

[Bug 1943859] Re: The development package does not include static libraries

2021-09-21 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Unsubscribing sponsors, we are not going to add a delta over Debian and
the changes are being reviewed there, quote from the first review the
maintainer did

'libpango-1.0.so.0 depends on libgio-2.0.so.0, which depends on
libmount.so.1, which is only available as a shared library, so it
doesn't seem like it is going to be possible to link these libraries
statically regardless of whether we build a .a file or not.'
