[Bug 1956147] Re: bluetooth: Google Nest not working

2022-01-04 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Comparing Ubuntu 20.04 to Debian Unstable probably isn't fair because
the former is a couple of years older. Please try either Ubuntu 21.10:

  https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop

or the preview of Ubuntu 22.04:

Yes I did test Ctrl+C, Ctrl+X and Ctrl+V. All work as expected for me in
20.04. Pointer location only occurs if I release Ctrl without having
pressed any other key.

But I use a simple US layout. Maybe bug 1872230 occurs for you and
others due to other layouts.

No, pointer location is fired once Ctrl is released AND no other
shortcut was pressed. I've just confirmed it works correctly on Ubuntu

If you are sure you are holding down the Ctrl key for long enough and
there is really a bug then please run:

[Bug 1956391] Re: Changing username from gnome-control-center does not change the user home directory or name within the OS

2022-01-04 Thread Daniel van Vugt
You can't change the username in gnome-control-center, you can only
change the display name of the user. And those two properties are
separate to the home directory path.

IF gnome-control-center could change the username then yes it would make
sense for the GUI to rename the home directory by default. But it can't
change the username so this request seems to be invalid.

If you want to change the username and home directory path then you need
to log in as root or sudo from another account and edit /etc/passwd,
then manually rename the directory, then reboot.

[Bug 1955753] Re: Using 3 fingers touch screen gestures freezes the system

2022-01-04 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Description changed:

Bug severity: 8/10 major productivity hindrance!
Reproducibility: 100% on every distro running gnome 40 and 41.
- Ubuntu Version: 20.10.
+ Ubuntu Version: 21.10.
  Package: gnome-shell 40.5-1ubuntu2 500

  Background:
Under Wayland, there are multi touch gestures implemented for the touchscreen
and for the touchpad.
3 fingers up for activities overview and again for applications swiping left
and right will switch desktops, in and out of the activities screen.

Using the touchpad everything is fine and the system works as expected.

as long as there are no programs running, using three fingers on the
screen will go into the overview and move between desktopsas expected.

  The Bug:
As soon as you enter overview with applications running and you swipe an app
with more than 1 finger the entire shell will freeze and you cannot move to the
other TTYs using the ctrl+alt+f#. Only the mouse still moves and there is an
app preview stuck (see attached image).
If you wait until the computer locks you can enter the lockscreen and the
other TTYs.

  Expected Behaviour:
System not hanging when swiping over an app window preview with more than 1
finger on the activities screen, The app should'nt be draggable with more than
1 finger.
Swiping over the activities screen with 3 fingers should move between
desktops overviews just like 3 fingers on a touchpad does and just like how it
does when not doing so over an app.

-
- Edit: IMO, It might be a gnome bug, however as it is affecting the entire OS
Canonical should patch it with a little hack/gnome addon that prevents dragging
an app preview with more than 1 finger.
+ Edit: IMO, It might be a gnome bug, however as it is affecting the
+ entire OS Canonical should patch it with a little hack/gnome addon that
+ prevents dragging an app preview with more than 1 finger.

[Bug 1956391] Re: Changing username from gnome-control-center does not change the user home directory or name within the OS

2022-01-04 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Apparently you didn't know there are two kinds of "username". While you
can't change the login name easily after a user has been created, being
able to change the display name (as shown on the login screen, for
instance) is a reasonable feature.

Possibly there is room for clarification in the UI. If you think there
is, I would suggest that you file an upstream issue:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/-/issues

But that would be another kind of bug, so closing this one.

[Bug 1956391] Re: Changing username from gnome-control-center does not change the user home directory or name within the OS

2022-01-04 Thread wontfix
The dir in the home directory is named after the user. If your username
is user1, your home directory will be user1. If you change your username
in gnome-control-panel to user2, your home directory will still contain
user1 and not user2.

If you can't change it that way, then why bother having the option? It
isn't intuitive and provides extremely confusing UX. That is why I
reported it as a bug. It should do those things.

2022-01-04 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
AFAIK you can't change the real username (login name) from gnome-
control-center, only the display name (e.g. "full name"). How is the
latter related to the home directory?

[Bug 595934] Re: gvfs-backends should be split in multiple sub-packages

2022-01-04 Thread wontfix
This bug sadly still exists in 2022. libgphoto2-6 now allows for network
communication for cameras and related devices. libmobiledevice6 ensures
that you are forced to have iphone support. libgdata is generally Google
specific. CD rom support is still there, in 2022. Non-secure FTP and
WebDAV? Still default required, installed, and irremovable in 2022.

All of the library packages are required dependencies. It looks like it
could be broken out even further according to the installed files list
but at least making them recommended would be a wonderful first step.

[Bug 1955058] Re: gnome-shell memory use climbs to multiple GBs

2022-01-04 Thread sammy247
I uninstalled all the non-default extensions and deleted the extensions
folder as you said.

I rebooted then:
246.2 MB at 10:19 in the morning
449.6 10:45 - then just left the PC on but did not use it.
2.5 GB 16:49
3.0 GB 17:50

Both previously and after removing the extensions today, if I issue the
[alt-F2 r] command, the memory drops back down to 250 MB from however
many GBs it is.

settings.txt is as follows. It shows extensions as active that have been
removed (not present in either extensions app or via Firefox extensions
addon). Note that apart from audio output switcher, caffeine, clipboard
indicator and night theme switcher, all the others were uninstalled

[Bug 1956145] [NEW] Nautilus gives a cryptic error message when I try to navigate to /root after I give my password

2022-01-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Open nautilus.
click on Other Locations
click on Computer, then root
password prompt window opens, I type in my password.

Error message windows pops up:

Oops! Something went wrong.
Unhandled error message:
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed:Unix
process subject does not have uid set

Not only is this cryptic, it doesn't help me understand what went wrong.
I should be able to navigate and handle file management in /root with sudo
privileges via Nautilus.

[Bug 1956350] [NEW] xdg-desktop-portal-gnome missing in Jammy ISO

2022-01-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
Steve Langasek (vorlon) has assigned this bug to your team "Ubuntu Desktop
Bugs" for ubuntu-meta in Ubuntu:

Ubuntu Jammy ISO contains xdg-desktop-portal-gtk but xdg-desktop-portal-gnome
is missing.
xdg-desktop-portal-gnome is needed for GIMP Color picker and Flameshot on
Wayland.
see https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issues/1074
apt show xdg-desktop-portal-gnome says:
Non-GNOME GTK-based desktop environments should normally use
xdg-desktop-portal-gtk or their own portal implementation instead of
 this one.
and Ubuntu 22.04 is a GNOME desktop, so xdg-desktop-portal-gnome should be
included in the ISO image.

Incomplete
Bug description:
When I select "Show Applications" to view all installed apps in Gnome on
Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS, the window does not allow me to scroll through the
installed applications. After doing some testing, I discovered that this is
related to me having "Fractional Scaling" enabled with a setting of 125% in
the display settings. I am using a 4K display and use this setting to make
windows and text appear larger on the screen.
If I set the scaling to 100% or simply disable Fractional Scaling, I am
able to scroll through the list of installed apps normally. All other
fractional scaling settings (100%, 150%, 175% and 200%) work perfectly.
Only 125% is affected.
For reference, my display resolution is set to 3840x2180 @ 60Hz.
It is kind of late in the life of this release to do much about this, but I
thought I should pass this info along.

Re: [Bug 1955038] Re: Nautilus launcher does not bring open instance to front

2022-01-04 Thread seoras
I have run the request above, and attach a screenshot of the launcher. The
issue occurred in both my desktop and laptop when I upgraded to 21.10 As
you can see all active windows are highlighted in the launcher except for
nautilus, therefore clicking on Nautilus opens another instance.

Cheers

[Bug 1956343] [NEW] Flickering in Qt6 apps on Wayland

2022-01-04 Thread Telegram FZ-LLC
Public bug reported:

Recently Qt changed the default platform plugin from XWayland to Wayland
(in Qt 6.2.2).

When I've updated Telegram Desktop appplication to use Qt 6.2.2 there
were a lot of reports that the app became unusable on Ubuntu 20.04
Wayland, like this one:

https://github.com/telegramdesktop/tdesktop/issues/17468

I had to revert to XWayland by default in Telegram, but it would be nice
to fix the bug and allow to switch back to Wayland. This is the bug
report in Mutter:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/199

It was fixed, I believe this was the fix:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/431

I think this fix (and all related, if there are more) should be
backported to Ubuntu 20.04. Thanks.

[Bug 1955850] Re: /etc/X11/Xresources no longer loaded, error in patch

2022-01-04 Thread Matthijs Kooijman
Hm, that patch is indeed old, that is not consistent with what I thought
was going on. So I looked a little closer.

> Looking at the sources, I think this can be traced to:
 - Switching from a custom Xsession file to the upstream Xsession file in
3.38.0-1ubuntu1, combined with
 - An oversight in `debian/patches/ubuntu/xresources_is_a_dir.patch`

It seems the first point is not actually true. The changelog for that
version does list "Don't install debian/Xsession", but it is under
"Merge with Debian. Remaining changes:", so it's not a new change in
that version, just a statement of an existing difference between Ubuntu
and Debian. Looking in the current changelog, the earliest version that
mentions this change is 3.26.2.1-2ubuntu1 (from 2017), but already as
"remaining". I could not find which version introduced this change, but
given the age of the patch, I can imagine it has been around since 2011.

In that light, I suspect that the problem I'm seeing is not introduced
by switching to upstream Xsession, but by a change in the upstream
XSession file that this patch has not been adapted to. And indeed, it's
this one:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/-/commit/d98debd294060489c77d913d32674c4e08987b8f

But indeed, submitting this patch (after fixing it) upstream is probably a good
idea to prevent issues like this in the future (but I don't have the time to
take that on).

2022-01-04 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 1955058] Re: gnome-shell memory use climbs to multiple GBs

2022-01-04 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report.

Please start by uninstalling these extensions:

'gsconn...@andyholmes.github.io', (note bug 1812892)
'clipboard-indica...@tudmotu.com',
'sound-output-device-choo...@kgshank.net',
'audio-output-switcher@anduchs',
'darkthemetog...@jacob.mischka.me',
'nightthemeswitc...@romainvigier.fr',
'desktop-c...@schneegans.github.com'

and also remove any locally installed extensions:

  cd ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/
  rm -rf extensions

then log in again.

If the high memory usage happens after that then please run:

  gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.shell > settings.txt

and attach the output here.

[Bug 1956299] [NEW] GDM crashes sometimes when switching windows right after opening a new window

2022-01-04 Thread Ciro Santilli 六四事件 法轮功
Public bug reported:

Crash at:
https://errors.ubuntu.com/oops/8a56d4be-6d35-11ec-824f-fa163e6cac46

This has happened a few times, I open the VLC media player to play some
music, and then immediately alt tab to get back to the browser, while
the window appears to be "still opening".

The result then is that things like Alt + Tab stop working, and I see a
gdm crash under /var/crash ,

It is not very easy to reproduce due to timing. I started getting this
after upgrading to 21.10.

Running NVIDIA driver 470.86, gdm3 is at 41~rc-0ubuntu2.

[Bug 1954586] Re: login screen freezes when switching users

2022-01-04 Thread Daniel van Vugt
That gdm3 crash report suggests the failure was

Dec 12 12:24:24 Dapple gdm-launch-environment][27459]: GLib-GObject:
g_object_unref: assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
Dec 12 12:24:24 Dapple systemd[1]: gdm.service: Main process exited,
code=dumped, status=11/SEGV

Also your Xorg server crashed with bug 1543192 (which I think is usually
associated with Nvidia). That certainly would not help but it's a
different bug.

The gdm3 issue might also be related to bug 1945061.
