[Bug 1968929] Re: Missing Wayland login option on NVIDIA systems

2022-04-21 Thread Jimmys
I am not certain this is related, but on a fresh install on my laptop
with a gtx 1050 2gb, I installed the nvidia drivers. The 'intel
graphics' option was greyed out on the nvidia prime selection and the
wayland session was not available (gear missing).

I used the terminal command 'sudo prime-select intel'.

After reboot, the intel option is selected as well as greyed out and
wayland is the default and running smoothly (actually there was some lag
on X11, esp on boot with the dock, which is now gone).

[Bug 1968929] Re: Missing Wayland login option on NVIDIA systems

2022-04-21 Thread Elias E. del Real
I just did a fresh install of the official release of 22.04 LTS image
today, and hit this problem. I see no gear icon, and it defaults to X11,
with no option to select Wayland, whether I have just the NVIDIA GPU
enabled, or both the Intel integrated GPU and the NVIDIA discrete GPU
enabled in hybrid mode.

I had previously installed a nightly build of 22.04 LTS (beta) last
week, and had the gear as an option, and was able to select and use
Wayland.

[Bug 1969816] [NEW] Display dimming despite setting being turned off

2022-04-21 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

The display is dimming after a few seconds of "inactivity" despite
turning off the setting to dim the display. This seems to occur on any
power setting and a reboot did not solve the problem. This makes
activities such as reading difficult as the display becomes harder to
read and I have to interact with the computer more than necessary to
keep the screen bright.

Canonical and myself are not part of the GNOME design team. Although we

If you would like to make GNOME design suggestions then maybe try

[Bug 1969357] Re: Unity7 crashes on Jammy with 22.04's gnome-session version

2022-04-21 Thread Treviño
Looking at dbus-x11, I think it would still be possible to have it
running without it, but I feel it would need to tune the systemd units a
bit to get dbus running.

[Bug 1969855] [NEW] Livepatch status icon does not appear in top bar

2022-04-21 Thread Paul White
Public bug reported:

Today I enabled Livepatch and have confirmed it is active.

The option to 'Show Livepatch status in the top bar' in the Software &
Updates application is checked but I do not have the status icon that I

I have rebooted my laptop and have checked in both Xorg and Wayland

When in use I do see the relevant icons for HexChat, Transmission and
IRCCloud in this area.

[Bug 1961747] Re: [nvidia] Black screen (with grey squares) after resume from sleep

2022-04-21 Thread Henrik Harmsen
I updated my system today. I added this file:

# cat /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-power-management.conf
options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1

Now, for the first time ever, it seems Wayland with Nvidia proprietary
drivers work, including suspend and resume. I think I did not have to do
anything else than the above, but I'm not 100% sure.

+ additional libraries. The main inclusion will be worked on over the next
+ few months.
+
+ Original Bug Report
+ ---
+ This is very similar to bug #1966418, but only concerns the email edit window.

Before bug #1966418 was fixed, Evolution did not display email contents
when running under Wayland. Starting Evolution with
  WEBKIT_DISABLE_COMPOSITING_MODE=1 worked around the issue.

Now that #1966418 is fixed, displaying email contents works again even
without the workaround. However, it's still not possible to write/edit
an email. The message area is greyed out and unresponsive.

When running under X or using the above workaround, editing emails
works. So the issue seems to be the same as in #1966418, but for the
  edit window.

  Workaround #1
  -
Open a terminal and run this command:
  WEBKIT_DISABLE_COMPOSITING_MODE=1 evolution

  Workaround #2
  -
  Log out.
Select your name on the login screen.
Click the gear button and choose Ubuntu on Xorg.
Enter your password to finish logging in.

[Bug 1969357] Re: Unity7 crashes on Jammy with 22.04's gnome-session version

2022-04-21 Thread Rudra Saraswat
Turns out that Ubiquity was removing dbus-x11 (was included in it's
remove list), so I've removed it from Ubiquity's package remove list and
released Ubuntu Unity 22.04 (didn't find any issues after that):

[Bug 1969782] [NEW] action-middle-click-titlebar 'toggle-maximize-vertically' instead does 'toggle-maximize'

2022-04-21 Thread ebsf
Public bug reported:

Simply, configuring the middle mouse button in dconf-editor to maximize
a window vertically when its title bar is middle-clicked, causes the
window instead to maximize fully.

In dconf-editor, the setting is
/org/gnome/desktop/wm/preferences/action-middle-click-titlebar.

The misbehaving setting is 'toggle-maximize-vertically'.

The 'toggle-maximize' setting works correctly.

Ubuntu 20.04.4
gnome-shell 3.36.9-0ubuntu0.20.04.2

Expected behavior: Configuring the middle mouse button to maximize
vertically would cause the window to maximize vertically.

Behavior: Configuring the middle mouse button to maximize vertically
instead causes the window to maximize fully, i.e., both vertically and
horizontally.

[Bug 1969357] Re: Unity7 crashes on Jammy with 22.04's gnome-session version

2022-04-21 Thread Rudra Saraswat
I just did a fresh install (again) of Ubuntu Unity 22.04 (an iso I built
just now) and it looks like dbus-x11 was not installed by default and
installing it without touching gnome-session (and then rebooting) fixed
the issue (I didn't install or remove any another packages). This works
with both GDM and lightdm. Looks like gnome-session wasn't causing the
issue and dbus-x11 was getting installed when installing gnome-session's
old version, which is why it started working after installing the old
version of gnome-session.

[Bug 1968929] Re: Missing Wayland login option on NVIDIA systems

2022-04-21 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

- Desired Functionality
+ Impact
  -
Systems using Nvidia graphics drivers should have an option to use Wayland
but Xorg should be the default.

Hybrid systems using Nvidia graphics drivers should use Wayland by
  default.
-
- Impact
- --

  Test Case
  -
Create a new user (since existing users can choose their own session).
Restart your system after applying the update.
Select your name on the login screen.
A gear button should appear in the lower right of the screen.
- Click the gear button. Ubuntu should be selected unless you are using a
system with only an Nvidia graphics card where Ubuntu on Xorg should be
selected.
+ Click the gear button. Ubuntu should be selected.

- Remaining concerns
- -
- Upgrades may still use Wayland?
+ If you are using a system with only an Nvidia graphics card (so your
+ system is not a hybrid), there should be an Ubuntu on Wayland option.

- There are some suspend & resume issues with Wayland for Nvidia graphics
- drivers in Ubuntu.
+ Otherwise, there should be an Ubuntu on Xorg option.
+
+ What Could Go Wrong
+ ---
+ Hybrid systems should actually be using the Intel graphics for to run GNOME
Shell so that's why it should be safe to use Wayland by default.
+
+ There are some suspend & resume issues, an issue with gsync, etc. which
+ is why Nvidia are requesting that we don't enable Wayland by default for
+ systems that are only using the Nvidia graphics driver. We do still make
+ it available in case someone really wants to try without needing to edit
+ system files.
+
+ Before last week, we were actually using Wayland by default for Nvidia
+ systems so this upload returns most systems back to that status quo.
+
+ Priority
+
+ This is a high priority for the Desktop and OEM Teams and it's requested that
this update be available as soon as possible after release.
+
+ The desktop live session defaults to Xorg not Wayland so this doesn't
+ impact that session at all. We are not going to delay the release to get
+ this fix on the Ubuntu 22.04 desktop ISO.

  Original Bug Report
  ---
-
I'm using Ubuntu 22.04 on a Dell G15 5511 laptop that have an NVIDIA 3060
GPU. I saw in the last update in the gdm3 package that Wayland will be disabled
in machines with hybrid graphics.
The question is: In this laptop I can enable optimus to use Intel and
sometimes NVIDIA or keep only on NVIDIA (I use this option). So even it's
detected two GPUs the Intel one is unused.
I think the problem could extend for people with a desktop with an integrated
intel GPU and a discrete NVIDIA GPU, since both will be present in the system.
So maybe will be necessary to check with more accuracy to check if there are
two GPUs, but only one is being used or have a documented option to force the
enablement of Wayland.

[Bug 1969767] [NEW] totem crashes when attempting to play mp4 files

2022-04-21 Thread Paul White
Public bug reported:

I can add and display a directory of .mp4 files in totem but when
attempting to play any of them totem will crash. Any attempts to restart
totem fail with the window not appearing at all.

After several attempts to restart I can add an .mp4 file but any attempt
to play it results in the described sequence repeating with sometimes
the window not appearing, sometimes I can navigate to a local file and
sometimes the above error is displayed as soon as totem's window is
displayed.

These reports have appeared on errors.ubuntu.com which relate to the
most recent crashes:

[Bug 1969558] Re: Dragging one edge of a modal dialog moves the opposite edge

2022-04-21 Thread Batwam
That's right, this becomes quite visible with Extension settings as they
can be quite lengthy and the default window size it often too small. I
am not sure I agree with the design choice but I believe that this is
outside of the scope of this bug report so I'm happy for this report to
be closed since the system behaves as intended. I will leave it to you
and the design team to decide if you want to revisit this design choise
in the future or not.

[Bug 1969512] Re: totem unable to play bbb mp4: "The specified movie could not be found"

2022-04-21 Thread Dave Jones
We download and try to play locally (see item 12 in
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/432/builds/247134/testcases/1747/results
for an example). I'll try and get some DEBUG output this morning (I can
state it's definitely not crashing though; the error message simply
appears and totem remains open, without playing anything, until closed).

[Bug 1969357] Re: Unity7 crashes on Jammy with 22.04's gnome-session version

2022-04-21 Thread Adrian Wilkins
So you can minimize this window and then have working Unity. If you
close it, your session ends.

This window belongs to a process of

/usr/libexec/gnome-session-failed

[Bug 1969357] Re: Unity7 crashes on Jammy with 22.04's gnome-session version

2022-04-21 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Confirm (in KVM machines) that Unity works fine from gdm3 under Impish,
but a fresh VM of Jammy doesn't work with either lightdm or gdm for me.

I get to see a quick glimpse of the Unity desktop, then this fullscreen
splash error shows up

"Oh no! Something has gone wrong.

A problem has occurred and the system can't recover.
All extensions have been disabled as a precaution."

Since it refers to extensions, I presume this is a part of GNOME Shell.

However... if you use the keyboard shortcut to left-split the window
(ctrl-super-left) ... you can see the Unity desktop is running. (I first
tried ctrl-alt-t to summon a terminal above it but the window is always-
on-top, I saw it lose focus though.)

Judging by drminfo.txt, there is no backlight because it's OLED. Only
the OLED variant of XPS 9320 is 3456x2160 pixels.

[Bug 1969558] Re: Dragging one edge of a modal dialog moves the opposite edge

2022-04-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Often modal dialogs are not resizable, or default to a sane size where
the user has no desire to resize them. So most people will never notice
it.
