[Bug 2039340] Re: On upgrade from 23.04 to 23.10, cannot login using Gnome or Ubuntu WM entries

2023-10-19 Thread Anadon
I am unable to feasibly comply with running anything from apport.
Apport uses `#!/usr/bin/python3` instead of `#!/usr/bin/env python3`
across its files, which runs into issues with my Guix installation's
instance of Glibc even when removing all the environmental variables
that allow Guix to hook into the terminal. Apport must be doing
something clever but not quite clever enough to isolate itself from
potentially broken system components? In it's place, I'll attach the
crash file.

** Attachment added: "_usr_bin_gnome-shell.120.crash"

Yes error reporting was broken until recently (bug 2038650) so please
check that you have that fix too (apport >= 2.27.0-0ubuntu5).

[Bug 2039801] Re: Ubuntu 23.10, locate pointer not working

2023-10-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report. I can't seem to reproduce the issue here.
Left Ctrl for pointer location is working in Ubuntu 23.10 for me.

Please execute the following command only once, as it will automatically
gather debugging information, in a terminal:

  apport-collect 2039801

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

See also bug 1875056 and bug 1872230.

[Bug 2039801] [NEW] Ubuntu 23.10, locate pointer not working

2023-10-19 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 23.10 (Mantic Minotaur), going through the
regular process of settling in with the new features and so forth, I realised
that the 'locate pointer' is not working as expected.
When the focus is on a screen element (like this text field that I am entering
information into) I can press the left ctrl button and the border will flash
around the element/text field/button etcetera.
(I have made a screen cast, if I can I will upload it)
Previously when pressing the left ctrl button the mouse pointer would be shown
with a circular pulsing image (like a something dropping into calm water).
I have read several forums and have looked specifically how to set the locate
pointer option, I have set it in accessibility->pointing & clicking->Locate
Pointer, also via cli with "gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface
locate-pointer true" and using the gnome tweaks gui.
None of these things work.
Ubuntu 23.10,gnome 45, gdm3, acer aspire V 17 nitro black edition
Description:Ubuntu 23.10
Release:23.10
Not seemingly specific to any 'package' so package version is not relevant.

Expect the mouse pointer to be highlighted instead only the cursor
position is located.

[Bug 1965303] Re: Migrate from fbdev drivers to simpledrm and DRM fbdev emulation layer

2023-10-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** No longer affects: gdm3 (Ubuntu)

** No longer affects: gdm3 (Ubuntu Lunar)

** No longer affects: gdm3 (Ubuntu Mantic)

** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]
The fbdev subsystem has been deprecated for a long time. We should drop it in
favour of using simpledrm with fbdev emulation layer.

  This requires Kernel config changes:

  FB_EFI=n
  FB_VESA=n

fbcon will still require FB to be available, but will use the fbdev
  emulation layer

When this stack is enabled, it changes boot timing such that some
drivers may take a longer time to boot and GDM may hang in a black
- screen.
-
- This issue has been readily reproduced in Ubuntu and reported to upstream
mutter.
+ screen (bug 2039757).

  [ Test Plan ]
- * Ensure that a kernel with required kernel changes can boot to GDM using DRM
driver (amdgpu, i915, or nouveau)
+ * Ensure that systems currently relying on fbdev (and therefore only allowing
Xorg logins) such as some virtual machine types, boot with working Wayland
support.

[ Where Problems could occur ]
  * Race conditions could be exposed to DE environments
  * Software that expects to find DRM device at /dev/dri/card0 may have a
problem.
  * Some older versions of NVIDIA driver might not work properly.

  [ Other Info ]
  * Fedora bug: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2022385
