Exactly.

They weren't, and almost certainly won't be.

which is probably just barely perceptible.

Exactly. If anyone's having latency problems big enough that make them
follow this bug and try mutter packages from a PPA, then upgrading the
terminal won't fix them.

[Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11 after logging "MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events handled properly?"

2024-04-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I'd like to resolve any confusion from the last 10 comments or so. This
bug is only for people who have "MetaSyncRing" messages in their system
log:

  journalctl -b0 | grep MetaSyncRing

like:

Window manager warning: MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events
handled properly?
Window manager warning: MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events
handled properly?
Window manager warning: MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events
handled properly?
Window manager warning: MetaSyncRing: Too many reboots -- disabling

If you don't have any MetaSyncRing messages then please open new bugs.

** Summary changed:

- Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11
+ Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11 after logging "MetaSyncRing:
Sync object is not ready -- were events handled properly?"

** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]

Input or the entire screen may freeze at times on systems using the
  Nvidia Xorg driver with GNOME.

  [ Test Plan ]

  0. Set up a desktop with Nvidia driver 545 or 550.
  1. Log into Ubuntu, ensuring it's a Xorg session.
  2. Open a Terminal, resize it vigorously, and type several lines of text.
- 3. Verify that input never froze for any perceptible period of time.
- 4. Run: journalctl -b0 | grep MetaSyncRing
- 5. Verify the above command does NOT show messages such as:
+ 3. Run: journalctl -b0 | grep MetaSyncRing
+ 4. Verify the above command does NOT show "MetaSyncRing" messages such as:

Window manager warning: MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events
handled properly?
Window manager warning: MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events
handled properly?
Window manager warning: MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events
handled properly?
Window manager warning: MetaSyncRing: Too many reboots -- disabling

[ Where problems could occur ]

Anywhere in Nvidia (proprietary driver) Xorg sessions since the code
being modified is only used with that driver.

  [ Original Description ]

There is a noticeable delay in input while using the native terminal. I
belive it was caused by a recent software update, as this issue is
  relatively new.

[Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11

2024-04-09 Thread Nathan Bryant
Upstream Gnome 46 made a lot of changes recently to improve performance
and input lag in Gnome-Terminal. Those changes are separate from this
bug. I don't know whether those changes were backported to Ubuntu 22.04,
which ships Gnome 42. That's a question for Daniel or someone else at
Canonical.

See https://bxt.rs/blog/just-how-much-faster-are-the-gnome-46-terminals/
and note that the graphs are only talking about lag in the neighborhood
of 40-50ms, which is probably just barely perceptible.

[Bug 2060730] [NEW] totem cannot install codecs via packagekit

2024-04-09 Thread Dave Jones
Public bug reported:

While attempting to play a video on Ubuntu noble desktop for raspberry
pi, totem attempts to locate a package for the H.264 codec but cannot
find a service providing org.freedesktop.PackageKit. This is strange
given that packagekit is installed, provides packagekit.service, which
declares that it provides that name over DBus. Specifically, the
following is output by totem:

[Bug 2060266] Re: gnome-session.service [unity-session] uses deprecated --builtin parameter

2024-04-09 Thread Tim Andersson
I've also encountered this on the latest ubuntu-unity iso:

*noble-desktop-amd64.iso

when trying to do a fresh install in a VM, prior to opening the
installer, I'm greeted with the attached screen.

After clicking login, I get a black, blank screen momentarily, then I'm
booted back to the attached screen.

[Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11

2024-04-09 Thread threadbareobserve
- Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS (5.15.0-56-generic)
- I am using X11 when nvidia driver is in use.
- Checked via observing `XDG_SESSION_TYPE` variable
- I am using on-demand feature for nvidia but switching to performance mode
only does not help.

My primary issue is keyboard input lag. It is not as bad as it used to be but
it exist.
- I notice it in terminal window and vscode as these are the applications I use
mostly
- Sometimes it take a few minutes to appear after a reboot sometimes it appears
right away.

Other than the keyboard input lag I notice some lagging when scrolling
in Chrome. However this is less apparent.

I can't downgrade nvidia driver, this is likely an unrelated to this bug though.
- Debian package manager just install nvidia 550 regardless of the package I
choose.
- `ubuntu-driver` think drivers are already installed if I try to install a
specific version.
- `ubuntu-driver` autoinstall/install just install 550

[Bug 2060679] [NEW] No icons for gtk4 applications under noble

2024-04-09 Thread Dave Jones
Public bug reported:

While testing the Ubuntu noble (24.04) desktop for Raspberry Pi beta, I
noticed that all GTK4 applications appear to be missing various icons.
All lack the minimize / maximize / close icons (which are left as three
empty circles on the window), and others lack icons within the windows,
e.g. on various controls like radio buttons, or folder icons in
nautilus. GTK3 applications appear unaffected. I'll attach some
screenshots demonstrating the issue.

[Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11

2024-04-09 Thread Nathan Bryant
Hi Daniel,

No, not multi-GPU. It's an AMD system with no integrated graphics and
only one Nvidia card. One monitor plugged in, one TV plugged in to that
card via HDMI. But the TV is usually turned off, and disabled in
Settings | Displays. Running Xorg, not Wayland.

This doesn't look like bug 1876632; it's not suspend- or VT-switch-
related. Maybe I shouldn't have called it "corruption"; what I'm seeing
looks like gnome-terminal just... deciding not to render something that
it should; characters don't echo. No wild colors or randomized textures
or anything like that. Seems like either a problem within gnome-
terminal, or GPU command buffers just getting dropped on the floor.
Awfully similar to this bug.

[Bug 2060575] Re: gnome-keyring fails to automatically unlock login keyring after recent updates in noble

2024-04-09 Thread David White
It seems that the usual password keyring called Login is not
automatically created in gnome-keyring. In fact there are no credentials
of any kind in there on logging in after a clean install.

If you change your password via the control panel, the login keyring is
then created.

However, when you reboot the Login keyring is not automatically
unlocked, as it should be. So, any items you have stored in there are
not accessible and you are asked for the password when a service needs
credentials from it.

[Bug 2060667] [NEW] No default keyring and does not unlock on login

2024-04-09 Thread David White
Public bug reported:

On a fresh install of Ubuntu 24.04 numbat, gnome-keyring does not seem
to be properly configured.

If I attempt to add an online account via settings > online accounts,
after authentication with the online account gnome-keyring prompts me to
create a default keyring because one does not exist yet, so I cancelled.

Opening gnome-keyring reveals there is no entry under Passwords when I
think there should be a "Login" password keyring that's automatically
unlocked on login.

Setting a new password via settings > system > users creates a new
Loging keyring. However, this keyring is not automatically unlocked on
login.

So, whenever I first use an app after login that uses a keyring, such as
connecting to Google drive via Nautilus, I'm prompted for the keyring
password.

[Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11

2024-04-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I've now tested everything I can reasonably test:
  - Nvidia 545
  - Nvidia 550
  - Nvidia-only, single monitor
  - Nvidia-only, dual monitors
  - Nvidia+Intel hybrid, one monitor each

Confirmed the bug occurs in Nvidia-only configurations when the fix is
not present. And confirmed the bug does not occur in any configurations
when the fix is present.

So I suspect threadbareobserve is experiencing a different issue. Maybe
using Wayland instead of X11?

P.S. Nathan, please report your "corrupted screen" in a new bug if it is
not already covered by bug 1876632.
