[Bug 596039] [NEW] f-spot crash with sigsegv when importing (on lucid)

2010-06-18 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: f-spot

f-spot crashes when clicking on import;

i include the terminal output when run in debug mode (it did not work to pipe
it to a file, i tried)
it seems a different bug than the others reported (it seems unrelated to the
x-server)
thank you for a solution!

andrew

[Bug 557906] Re: lucid - keyring is not unlocked automatically, no option to set

2010-04-12 Thread Andrew Frank
i think nothing should be automatically unsecure or secure (i understand that
some defaults are necessary and i do not see a point in discussing what
defaults should be), but the user should have the options to set his level of
security as he sees fit.
thus:
automatic login does what it says: it logs the desired user in when the
computer starts. this is currently working well.

what is not possible at the moment (at least i have not managed to
achieve it): that one of the keyrings is automatically unlocked when i
am logged in. at the moment there is a connection between how i was
logged in (automatic or not) and the automatic unlocking of a keyring.
this connection, which is not transparent to the user and not
controllable by the user is what is the issue.

suggestion: keyring should honor what the interface says 'unlock this
keyring whenever i am logged in' (no tacit assumption how the login
happened). a blank password is not the option - the point is not
avoiding to type but avoiding to be asked, which means processes (e.g.
the network connection, and thus mail download) do not start
automatically unattended.

at the moment i see a bug in the difference between the keyring interface text
and the behavior. i suggest to modify the behavior.
the result will be that users can decide how secure their systems should be and
how often they should be asked for passwords.

[Bug 557906] [NEW] lucid - keyring is not unlocked automatically, no option to set

2010-04-08 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: seahorse

under lucid (and automatic login swtiched off) the default keyring is
not opened automatically - as a consquence, networking is not enabled. i
cannot find the place where i must set the automatic opening of the
default keyring after login.

please fix also that it opens automatically when autologin is on!

why is keyring management under application and not under system
(preferences or administration?)

thank you

[Bug 459928] [NEW] display manager does not allow to switch a display on if screens are mirrored

2009-10-24 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

the method to select a screen and then to switch it on or off (or to change
resolution) is based on clicking on the corresponding screen in dht display in
the applet. this is not intuitive and could perhaps needs a sentence of
explanation in the GUI.
the bug however is, that when one ticks the 'mirror screen' on then the two
displays are shown as one and it is not possible to select one or the other
from the gui. this is a bug in the gui that needs a fix (eg add a drop down
list to select one or the other display, or similar).

thank you for a fine GUI!

[Bug 47604] Re: Pictures Folder isn't configurable

2009-05-30 Thread Andrew Frank
the screensavers with 9.04 jaunty are still a problem. the Pictures folder
does not display anything and cannot be stopped - only an 'unclean restart' did
work.
a method to put pictures in a folder and have them displayed with a selectable
interval is really needed. the current situation is not satisfactory (only
f-spot is working for me, and interval is not selectable either).
thanks for your efforts!

[Bug 199912] [NEW] evolution filter messages on exchange server takes forever

2008-03-08 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

i tried to apply 2 filters to an inbox with 30 messages and it takes
more than 30 minutes to complete. it seems to work eventually, but so
slow it is really not usable. is this a problem with ubuntu/evolutoin of
MS/exchange server?

the action of the two filters was moving from folder on exchange server
to folder on exchange server.

this on a just updated 8.04

thank you!

[Bug 192910] [NEW] evince does show correctly put print gibberish

2008-02-18 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

i opened a pdf which shows correctly in evince. the printing is messed up.
(hard to include the printout here!)

some full paragraphs are messed, it seemes that every word is reversed
(with some other effects) some strange characters interspersed and too
much kerning to overpritn

it may be a duplicate of bug 22060 - but this was said to be fixed for
7.10 and i use 7.10.

the rest of the details i think you take from evince. the pdf file is attached

[Bug 191633] [NEW] [hardy] windows are still too large

2008-02-13 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

the issue of how wide a window should be had been discussed widely. i see some
progress (i.e. it is not as bad in hardy as in gutsy), but still a few pixels
too wide for me.
my screen size is 768 by 1024 (i run in portrait mode) and evolution seems to
start with about a 780 pixel (800?) pixel wide window. it should take the size
from the screen size (minus panels).

improvement, but not yet perfect!

[Bug 64538] Re: window resizing limited due to the new search bar

this bug is still not fixed in gutsy. i have a new installation and on my
portrait screen 1024 by 768 the evolution window (and all subwindows) open too
wide (the screen width is 768!) not by far, but enough that the buttons top
right are not visible.
the same for subwindows which are too wide for the screen.

can this be fixed. i cannot access the given bugzilla web address to see
what is going on there. (problem loading page)

[Bug 162939] excessive cpu usage by nautilus

2007-11-15 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

i tried to add a new user (which failed, claiming this user is already
existing, which is not correct; what is correct is that such a user
existed in the previous installation - of which the /home directory
survived).

the attached screenshot shows the cpu usage at 100 - it is a minute later still
at 95
for nautilus. what is it doing?

all programs now - they open windows which are too big for the screen.

[Bug 157900] evolution hangs with calDAV Eplugin

Binary package hint: evolution

evolution does not start up - or starts up with enormous delays.
when i start it in aterminal then i get the error message

calDAV Eplugin starting up
unexpected kerberos error

--what is wrong - what can be changed?

comment:
it is highly distracting, when applications show the 'xx starting' and then
disappear. when they are started again, they again show the 'xx starting' --
and eventually several copies are trying to start. what happens in between,
when the 'xx starting' disappears and the applicatoin appears?

second comment:
what is holding up other processes when i do not see any active process, but
most windows are frozen. what is eating the cpu?

[Bug 154931] gedit does not open xml file

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

gedit does not open a file which a hex editor shows to be an xml file

XML format).

gedit does not fail to open, but just does not return - it must be
killed (preferably by clicking on the close box where it says 'gedit is
not responding' and then click on force quit).

two bugs:
it should open the file for editing
it should at least return with an error message

[Bug 145121] gnome window manager incorrect window size (too large for screen)

2007-09-26 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome

i have an unusual portrait screen (1024 x 768) and i have one of the
panels to the left. this makes my screen abut 730 wide and 1000 high.

i see now numerous applicatoins opening windows which are just a little
bit too large, such that the scroll bars and the close button is just
outside. it is then necessary to move the window before one can scroll.
very anyoing bug.

i run gutsy - updated today.

(the bug was reported originally for problems with evolution, but i
realize that the same difficulty with managing windows appears in
several programs. in evolution (but also in others) it is aggravated by
the fact that subwindows cannot be made smaller beyond a point, thus
often ending with windows that are generally too large to show).

please fix soon!

[Bug 145350] evolution filter action on exit

evolution filters are applied on incoming or outgoing mail.
it would be useful if one could specify filters that are applied when evolution

The last error message was:

the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.

[Bug 8629] Re: Evolution setup wizard does not fit in 800x600

2007-09-13 Thread Andrew Frank
there are limits on how much a sub-window in evolution can be shrunk - why?
the side panel should be reducable to less and the mail window equally.

i think part of the problem are that there are limits in how small the
windows can be made and these limits are too large. the resizing of
windows and parts of the window work well, othewise (down to this
limits).

can this be checked (and hopefully fixed)

[Bug 138536] add/remove application vs synaptic

2007-09-10 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome

there is a confusion what can be installed with
- gnome - applications - add/remove

for a user, especially the two first options are difficult to understand
why is rdiff-backup not an application and must be installed with synaptic?
(other examples possible).

is it possible to reduce this confusion to allow a drop back from add/remove to

Re: [Bug 137931] Re: nautilus cut/paste zero length files 7.10

2007-09-07 Thread Andrew Frank
oops... it appears that i could have had a file protection problem -
the files where protected 600 in a directory protected 775 (i cannot
see why. it is .lyx) and i wanted to paste them into a similarly
protected directory (again 775). i guess the later was causing the

then my bug should perhaps move to the wish list: cut/pasate should not
silently fail when protection does not allow read or write of the file,
but inform the user. (it is not the first time i fell pray to this, but
the first time that i did not realise).

[Bug 137931] nautilus cut/paste zero length files 7.10

2007-09-07 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

i tried to cut and paste two zero-lenthg (empty) files.
this did not work.

did i make an (stupid) error or is this a bug?

rational:
1. for some programs, the existence of zero length files is important (eg lyx
with the two pipes)
therefore it makes sense to cut/paste empty files.
2. it is confusing if a basic comand like cut/paste does not always work

[Bug 95644] Re: after open the corresponding window is not raised

2007-08-14 Thread Andrew Frank
easy step to recreate the observed behaviour are easy (excuse me for not having
responded earlier, i did not see your request before):
go to a mail program (i use balsa, but it occured before, when i was using
thunderbird).
open mozilla,
chang to a mailer
select the mail that reports about a bug report.
click on the link to the bug report (https://bugs /+index# for example)
mozilla opens the page with the bug reports, but i do not see them.
(because i do not see a reaction, i click again - mozilla opens a second tab
with the bug report)
i have to click in the task list to select mozilla and then i see the open bug
report (or 2, 3... as often as i clicked, because i had no feedback)

--
again: the behavior i expect is that when opening a window in mozilla, then
mozilla becomes the open window.

--

this is not particular to mozilla, it happens with other programs at
well, i will report if i can describe another combination.

dear cesare,
i can see that for tablet computers, the rotation should go together,

Try setting that key (rotation or possibly orientation) to the wished
 orientation: inverted, left or right.
This should work as a work-around solution for the time being.

Is it a good idea for ALL users to combine the two (screen and tablet)
settings? They are two separate functionalities after all.
If you always use the same orientation you could make a permanent change to
your xorg.conf, or launch the script at startup otherwise just manually
launch the script when you change orientation.

[Bug 94995] opening a program does not immediately show a reaction

2007-03-23 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome

a principle of user interface design is to provide feedback to the user.
gnome does not always respect this. a particularly annoying behaviour
is:

when opening a program (double click) nothing happens for a while till
the program opens. when the open procedure is started, the first (very
first) thing is to give the user feedback that the command is received.
to this end one must change the cursor to the 'wait cursor (rotating
symbol)'.

the current behaviour of 'silently working' causes the user to doubt
that anything has happend and click another time (a third, forth...) to
find after a while that many copies have opened. this happens often to
me when starting ubuntu and the system is not yet fully responsive
(another problem - how to inform the user that the startup is not
completely completed, and system responsiveness will improve when this
is done).

i hope this is only a minor change ...

thank you for a nice system!

it would be extremely helpful the screen resolution selection would

Is there a key for it in the configuration file?
It should be something like /desktop/gnome/screen/default/0/rotation.

You should find the configuration editor in the System Tools menu, or
you can run it as command: gconf-editor.

Anyhow, this doesn't change the fact that the option should be retained.

Re: [Bug 93788] Re: screen resolution: changes are not retained

2007-03-23 Thread Andrew Frank
there is no key for the rotation in gconf-editor - i guess that is the
error?

 Many thanks for you report!

I assume you are talking about Gnome.
Is there a key for it in the configuration file?
It should be something like /desktop/gnome/screen/default/0/rotation.

You should find the configuration editor in the System Tools menu, or
you can run it as command: gconf-editor.

Anyhow, this doesn't change the fact that the option should be retained.

[Bug 94846] nautilus does not show correct path after UP command

2007-03-22 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

the icons (boxes) in the top part of nautilus which show the path to the
currenct directory are incorect.

if i open a link on my desktop to my home director (frank) then it shows
frank / desktop / frank

after an up command i see the desktop, but the path is not changed (still
frank/ desktop / frank

quite confusing...

Re: [Bug 93522] Re: how to delete windows-list applet (7.04 alpha 2.18.0 gnome))

2007-03-19 Thread Andrew Frank
thank you for the quick reply - and it worked, but it is not really
intuitive.
i guess there is no better method, but perhaps you could include a hint
in the
add to panel window - i have no better idea, but some hint should be
placed somewhere (perhaps briefly state what the fine double lines on
the panels indicate).

thank you for the good work!
