Looking at strace -eopen gedit, there is the sequence:
open(/usr/share/pixmaps/lpi-help.png, O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 17
open(/usr/share/pixmaps/lpi-translate.png, O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 17

open(/usr/share/pixmaps/lpi-help.png, O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 17
open(/usr/share/pixmaps/lpi-translate.png, O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 17

It looks like duplicates of the images are being created. The icons
should really be in /usr/share/icons so that the mmap'd cache can be
used. This would also make the icons themeable.

[Bug 45913] g-p's use of gettext uses more memory that needed

2006-05-21 Thread Ben Maurer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

gnome-panel loads about 1.2 MB of RSS via .mo files for the purpose of
localizing menu names:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ./smem.pl `pidof gnome-panel` | grep langpack | awk '{ sum
+= $3 } END {print sum}'
1196

While this memory is in theory shared (it's not private memory), for
most of the .mo files, g-p is the only consumer of the file. This causes
extra disk access during boot, and also consumes excess memory.

[Bug 43830] Remove evolution-exchange from ubuntu-desktop

2006-05-09 Thread Ben Maurer
Public bug reported:

Affects: gnome-desktop (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
I believe that evolution-exchange should be removed from ubuntu-desktop.
When the exchange component of evolution is installed, evo always
launches a helper daemon (evolution-exchange-storage). This uses 1.2 mb
of user memory.

Given that Exchange is a relatively rare usage of evolution (remember
that Ximian used to charge for the component), and that a deployment of
evolution-exchange would be seen in an enterprise environment, where the
system is customized anyways, it's not clear why this is in the default
environment.

[Bug 39328] Re: Offer option to disable scroll wheel on task list

2006-04-17 Thread Ben Maurer
At least for me, the panel ends up being more of an issue than other places we
use scrolling for non-text (like in tabs). The panel is a natural resting
place for one's mouse. Also, I've found that I often use the lower-right-hand
corner of the trackpad as a starting place to scroll.

The panel is the *ONLY* place I ever accidentially scroll using my laptop.

One (somewhat) odd thing: on a trackpad, the most natural motion to switch
windows would be scrolling along the *bottom* of the trackpad, left to right or
right to left. I imagine that's a bit more complicated though.

The issue is *exactly* that it changes the active window. However, it's

Ben, I don't quite understand this comment: The issue is that this
scroll isn't as reversible as scrolling in a text document or
 something.

 Why isn't it as reversible?

When you scroll a text document a few steps by accident, you don't lose
your place that much. You are just a few lines off from where you were.
However, when you scroll on the window list, you need to make the
*EXACT* same number of scrolls to get back to where you were. This is
hard to do on a laptop touchpad.

The scrolling works really well when you have a normal mouse, however I
think that it is hard to control with a laptop, and false-positive
detection of scrolling can make things worst, rather than better, with
the new feature.

This is the window list. So, here's what happens:

1. My cursor is on the panel (eg, because i was switching windows)
2. I want to move the cursor somewhere else
3. I often put my finger on the lower right hand corner of the pad.
4. The trackpad thinks i'm scrolling

The issue is that this scroll isn't as reversible as scrolling in a text

[Bug 38269] Strange behavior maximizing windows already at maximum size

2006-04-05 Thread Ben Maurer
Public bug reported:

Affects: metacity (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
To demonstrate this, you need a theme with rounded window borders (like
clearlooks). First, take a non-maximized window and resize it so it
takes the entire space of the desktop (do *NOT* maximize it, just
resize). Once this is done, double click the title bar, click the
maximize button, etc. The rounded corners will not become rectangular,
but the window border will go away (like in normal maximization). Also,
the maximize button will not change to unminimize.

It seems that (related to this) many apps are launched in what *should*
be a maximized state, however:

1) the window borders are not rectangular
2) you can't unminimize them

See attached screenshots.

Affects: gnome-icon-theme (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)

The GNOME hicolor icon theme needs to run gtk-update-icon-cache. Tango
is an example of doing this correctly. Doing so can save almost 300 kb
of ram per gtk process.

[Bug 23220] Closing lid should not turn off external LCD

2006-03-29 Thread Ben Maurer
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/23220

Comment:
This has not been addressed yet in dapper.

This issue can happen in a few situations. For example, when watching a movie
on a laptop with a large screen one might want to not have the laptop screen
on. Also, consider a docking-station setup.

[Bug 36922] No delay on tooltips

2006-03-27 Thread Ben Maurer
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/36922

Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
In the latest dapper betas it seems that the panel does not have a delay
for the tooltips on the panel menus. The tooltips should have the same
delay as for normal items that have mouse-over tooltips.
