[Bug 439448] Re: Visual corruption affecting several panel applets
The Ubuntu side of this bug: If a computer is affected then a) in roughly 10% of the boots, there is not way to Shut Down or Log Out the computer for a Newbie - actually to find a workaround you basically need a working internet connection. b) considering a) no responsible person would ever install Ubuntu on a Newbies computer. Imagine your mum, oncle, grandfather not being able to shut down the computer in 10% of the cases. The Ubuntu-side of the bug is to have removed the shutdown/log-out options from the normal Menu/System despite the fact that the panel applets are not reliable for many, many users. Not being able to shutdown/log out is a serious thing! Better to have two options to do this than only have one (non-reliable) option. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/439448 Title: Visual corruption affecting several panel applets -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets
Today the shut-down button became unusable because of this problem - this makes it really hard for inexperienced users to shut down their computers. This smells like a major usability problem and should be taken serious. I believe that at least the following could/should be done, as long as this bug exists: Put the options for logout/shut-down back to the System menu. Although this would not fix the underlying issue, at least this would enable inexperienced users to come back to normal by a logout/login sequence or a restart. -- visual corruption affecting several panel applets https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/439448 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 34321] Re: should not write the session when changing automatic session saving option
Indeed - I confirm for Ubuntu 9.04. Actually this could be considered as a regression since the option Save the current session is not present anymore in the System/Preferences/Startup Applications/Options. For me the following workaround helped: 1. Close all applications 2. Make sure that the option Automatically remember running applications when logging out is selected in System/Preferences/Startup Applications/Options 3. Logout and login again. 4. Unselect the option Automatically remember running applications when logging out. So the problem is to get an empty session (no applications opened) one has to go through a logout / login cycle with the enabled Automatically remember running applications when logging out option. One way to make this easier would be to put the Save the current session-option back to the options. Or perhaps even better: a Restore clean desktop-button. Easy enough to understand even for new users. -- should not write the session when changing automatic session saving option https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/34321 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 34321] Re: should not write the session when changing automatic session saving option
@FokkerCharlie: Note the following with respect to the description of my workaround: When doing the logout in step 3 the session file should be empy (since from step 1 there is no application open and since from step 2 you tell Ubuntu to remember running applications (which means here: no running applications) when logging out). When you login in step 3 you should then get the last session (without running applications). If this is not the case then you most probably suffer from a different bug - since until now we did not de-activate the automatic session saving option. Now, if you disable (step 4) the saving of running application - from this moment Ubuntu should always use the last saved session (without running applications). If this is not the case, could you please describe in detail what kind of behaviour you observe? Perhaps you are suffering from a different bug? -- should not write the session when changing automatic session saving option https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/34321 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 34321] Re: should not write the session when changing automatic session saving option
This bug is still present. I just installed Ubuntu 7.04 on my intel386 laptop to test if this bug is still present with Gnome 2.18.1. There is a slight change in the misbehavior, compared to former misbehavior: Now the session dialog box is not saved anymore at the moment when the the Automatically save changes to the session is unselected. However the session is still saved at that moment. To produce this bug I did the following: 1. Boot into Gnome 2. Open Nautilus 3. Select Automatically save changes to the session in the System/Sessions/Session Options dialog. 4. Log out and log in again result: as expected Nautilus is opened after login in. 5. Open in addition the Gedit Text-editor. 6. unselect Automatically save changes to the session in the System/Sessions/Session Options dialog. 7. Log out and log in again result: Nautilus and the Text-editor are opened exactly as they have been at the moment at which I have unselected the Automatically save changes to the session expected results: getting a plain standard desktop after the login (without open gnome-application). It seems like at the exact moment when unselecting the save-session option the session is saved for a last time and this session is reestablished after each log-in. Probably the file ~/.gnome2/session should just be deleted at the moment where the option is unselected. However, since now there is the option Save the current session in the System/Session/Session Options dialog it is easy to get back to the default desktop. In my case it was sufficient to close Nautilus and Gedit and to click on Save the current session. Thanks a lot to the developers to add this very useful option. -- should not write the session when changing automatic session saving option https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/34321 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 37134] unable to add network-printer using the same driver
Public bug reported: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/37134 Affects: gnome-cups-manager (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed Description: Using ubuntu Dapper (with the latest updates 29/03/2006) in an office environment I observed the following problem: Using System / Printing (gnome-cups-manger) did not allow me to add a network printer. The problem seems to be that there are several printers at different location which all use the same print driver. When selecting the printer (driver) NO new printer has been added to the print dialog. Possibly this is a problem of naming since the following worked: 1. Adding a printer using the wrong/different driver (driver-name) did the job - a new printer has been added. 2. Then it is possible to choose the correct print-driver from the properties of the new printer. 3. Printer worked. It seems that this is a naming problem: gnome-cups-manager seems not to be able to create a new printer with the same name. In addition it is not possible to change the printer-name or the location (via properties in the gnome-cups-manager) which makes it hard to distinguish printers. Possibly this is related to the following bug: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/gnome-cups-manager/+bug/9374 This is a major problem in an office environment since typically the same printers are used at different places - and the user cannot easily add/distinguish printers. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 31596] [Dapper] Text is not rendered properly
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/31596 Comment: Not sure if this is the same bug. I just uploadet another test-file. When I open the file on dapper (using Evince) then rendering the file takes minutes. The displayed file is hardly readable. The attached file is created by using Lyx/latex and standard latex- fonts. The file shows up fine in Breezy. The file shows up fine using Adobe Acrobat (in Dapper and Breezy) -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
