[Bug 1435108] [NEW] Volume hotkeys stop working (dozens of seconds of delay)

2015-03-22 Thread Dario Bertini
Public bug reported:

This seems to be a similar problem to the one described here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1829744

With recent Ubuntu versions, though, gnome-settings-daemon is not there
anymore. I tried to kill unity-settings-daemon as a workaround, but it
doesn't work.

I followed the instructions here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting

and I can correctly see the keypresses be received correctly both with
xev and with evtest

with the latter, I can see that the interesting hotkeys codes:

Event: time 1427077143.513820, -- SYN_REPORT
Event: time 1427077143.616493, type 4 (EV_MSC), code 4 (MSC_SCAN), value ae
Event: time 1427077143.616493, type 1 (EV_KEY), code 114 (KEY_VOLUMEDOWN),
value 0
Event: time 1427077143.616493, -- SYN_REPORT
Event: time 1427077144.292461, type 4 (EV_MSC), code 4 (MSC_SCAN), value b0
Event: time 1427077144.292461, type 1 (EV_KEY), code 115 (KEY_VOLUMEUP), value 1

And the events can be seen even when the volume hotkeys are unresponsive
(the volume is not updated).

This seems to happen more often (or at least it's more noticeable to me)
when watching something in fullscreen.

Keypresses usually aren't lost, but are simply delayed and buffered, and
thus if I press the button 5/10 times, after half a minute of so, all
the keypresses will trigger the corresponding action all together

[Bug 1249700] [NEW] evolution-source-registry locks keyboard and mouse input

2013-11-09 Thread Dario Bertini
Public bug reported:

I updated ubuntu to 13.10, and now every time I login, I get the dreaded
bug #1142511

What's weird, is that the calendar auth popup doesn't let me interact
with anything else on the screen

I can only:

input a wrong password... the popup will disappear and reapper, still locking
the whole interface
input a good password (maybe, I can't test it, since it'd need an
application-specific password, and I can't open a browser to procure it)
select cancel... the popup is dismissed
press ctrl+alt+f#, and in a terminal kill the evolution-source-registry
process... this will let me go on

[Bug 1160847] Re: gvfs should not attempt to mount MTP devices in an endless loop (cluttering your desktop with messages)

2013-07-12 Thread Dario Bertini
I have a related problem: my Nexus S doesn't actually expose MTP, and so
gvfs pops up an error dialog each time I plug it in

I checked, and this seems to have been already fixed upstream: (4e21 is the
wrong id... 4e25 apparently is fine)
http://sourceforge.net/p/libmtp/code/ci/master/tree/src/music-players.h

If current devices truly have a different id when they have MTP enabled
or not, I think that Ubuntu on phablet should just be a good citizen,
and change it as well

[Bug 854833] Re: NM asks for Wi-Fi password every time I log in, or every minute, if Available to all users not checked; forgets password too

2013-05-04 Thread Dario Bertini
There's a similar issue, when it asks for the password, but in the
meanwhile it can actually connect... but for each failed tentative or
something, it'll pop up a new prompt

I found out that in my case that was due to multiple connections were
set up for the same wifi (it was done automatically... maybe when OKing
on a prompt that happens when the signal strength is low), deleting them
helped out

[Bug 874386] Re: Can't drag/drop files onto bookmarked folders

2013-02-11 Thread Dario Bertini
It's fixed at least in version 3.5.90.really.3.4.2-0ubuntu4.1 (in the about
dialog it's 3.4.2)
apparently it's not in the 12.04 repositories... I don't know if it's worth it
for you to ask/wait for someone to backport it, you might be better off
upgrading

[Bug 924473] Re: Pre-existing empathy gtalk account clashes with the online-accounts one

2012-02-01 Thread Dario Bertini
** Description changed:

+ This is probably a UX bug for everyone who's upgrading and keeping its
+ old empathy configuration
+
+ Basically: if you have configured a gtalk account, and you try the new
+ online-accounts settings in the gnome-control-center, as per bug
+ lp:855917 in Oneiric you won't notice anything
+
+ in Precise that bug has been apparently fixed, thus empathy
+ automatically creates a new gtalk account
+
+ There are many things to be done to clear this bug (not all of them at
+ the same time):
+
+ - modify online-accounts to check if there's another one already configured
inside of empathy (probably not a good idea: it's empathy's duty to behave
well) or at least warn of the possibility
+ - modify empathy to stop using the settings from online-accounts (if the
related account has been removed from inside empathy and if they haven't been
modified in gnome-control-center since)
+ - modify empathy to propose to merge the two (or delete one of the two)
+ - modify empathy to display with a label, or something, that this account
hasn't actually been configured inside of empathy
+
+ Here is the old description:
+
+ --
+
Empathy creates a second gtalk account, identical to the first one...
when launching empathy it fails to connect with the bogus account, and
  thus displays an error

after removing this account and logging off and on again, it appears
again (but not more than one time: it doesn't cumulate between logins,
it'll just create a single copy of the normal gtalk account)

this doesn't happen with the other (facebook, bonjour, msn) accounts
  that I've configured

[Bug 924468] [NEW] Empathy doesn't reconnect after wakeup

2012-01-31 Thread Dario Bertini
Public bug reported:

After wakeup, empathy doesn't reconnect automatically when the network
is brought up again

you can check this by leaving the window opened or by looking at the
messages indicator

it'll reconnect only after you start the empathy application again
(either by selecting Chat in the messages indicator or by opening
empathy from the launcher if the window has been previously closed)

(Automatically connect on startup is still checked in the
preferences)

[Bug 924473] [NEW] Empathy creates a bogus and nonfunctional gtalk account

2012-01-31 Thread Dario Bertini
Public bug reported:

Empathy creates a second gtalk account, identical to the first one...
when launching empathy it fails to connect with the bogus account, and
thus displays an error

after removing this account and logging off and on again, it appears
again (but not more than one time: it doesn't cumulate between logins,
it'll just create a single copy of the normal gtalk account)

this doesn't happen with the other (facebook, bonjour, msn) accounts
that I've configured

I don't think this is the same bug

the newer bug happened after september 2010, this bug has been reported
by only one person in october 2009, after which this problem was absent

if so, it's correct that this bug is flagged as fix released... but
otherwise only a bug triager would be able to change it

nonetheless, I added the supposed upstream bug... but now the information on
the status is quite incoherent

[Bug 735393] Re: GNOME bars theme lost

2011-06-02 Thread Dario Bertini
I tested in a virtualbox installation, and it also happens with the
classic environment without any desktop effects (thus, it's not compiz
fault)

moreover: I've seen this problem first hand on 3 other installations of
people around here, so I'm quite surprised that this bug has only 12
people affected (and thus such a low heat)

fwiw: here're the last 2 lines from my dmesg (after multiple tests both
with the compiz environment and the metacity one... thus after every
logout/login I got something like 4 different crashes of the theme,
and these lines are only talking about 2 single crashes, so these're
almost certainly unrelated):

[Bug 668833] [NEW] When the user is busy, the status should be enforced

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

There are three main online presence statuses:
available, away and busy.

The first is obvious, the second should hopefully also be managed
automatically by the software, and the third one...

The third one is at least a little bit controversial, but i think we can
sum its purpose this way: you have for whatever reason your client and

Let's look at the purpose of the statuses:
Available: you want to let all the other contacts that may need/want to address

now (except maybe for VERY important reasons, the ones that tipically require

Right now, empathy as a problem concerning the busy status: when the
user selects this status, his priority is clearly that of NOT being
contacted, but instead, if the service doesn't support a busy status
(i'm thinking of facebook right now) he's displayed as available (and he

  Binary package hint: empathy

- There are main online presence statuses:
+ There are three main online presence statuses:
  available, away and busy.

The first is obvious, the second should hopefully also be managed
automatically by the software, and the third one...

The third one is at least a little bit controversial, but i think we can
sum its purpose this way: you have for whatever reason your client and
connection loaded (it does automatically starts on login or whatever),
but you don't want to be bothered

Programs should shield the user from having to manage manually these
things, so they shouldn't care about the implementation difference in
  these...

Unfortunately, due to technical limitations in the library or political
decision from the companies managing the serves, not every service may
  supply all the relevant statuses...

Let's look at the purpose of the statuses:
Available: you want to let all the other contacts that may need/want to
address you that you're online
Away: you want to warn all the contacts that you may not be able to answer
because you are right away
Busy: you want to let everybody know that you don't want to be contacted
right now (except maybe for VERY important reasons, the ones that tipically
require that you shouldn't rely on a IM service to deliver), and if you're
online shouldn't matter to them.

Right now, empathy as a problem concerning the busy status: when the
user selects this status, his priority is clearly that of NOT being
contacted, but instead, if the service doesn't support a busy status
(i'm thinking of facebook right now) he's displayed as available (and he
doesn't even know about it, because the GUI doesn't tell you that!)

This means that it's instead very likely that he will we contacted, and
that's the thing the user didn't want on the first place...

To solve this, by giving more importance to the untraceability of the
user i think we should change our fallbacks and, when we know that a
service won't support a certain presence status (busy in this case) we
  should fallback to:

  busy
  |→invisible ...the others won't be able to contact you... too bad, but that's
a lesser evil than the other way around
  |→→→offline ...if invisible isn't supported either, not being able to see the
others that are online is again way less important than displaying yourself as
available (another problem is that you'll have to wait 2 seconds to connect
again when you'll want to be available again, but this is really an issue of
meager importance)

Obviously the fallback should act on a per-protocol basis, and if (but i
doubt ) it's needed, a config flag in the preferences could be added to
revert the behaviour to the old default

This may be seen as a limitation of facebook, but originally it made
sense: facebook chat was available only on the web site... and if you
were socializing on the web site, you were expected to be available
  (or momentarily away) for others...

Obviously now, with the xmpp service available to IM client that are
always running in the background, this has become an issue, and even if
it could be considered a facebook issue, it's still a defect we can fix

[Bug 621927] Re: Embedded Terminal Emulator isn't giving a TERM variable

2010-10-12 Thread Dario Bertini
my 2 cents:

i don't think it's wise to set the bug for all those projects as invalid

even if the bug is not in the sources of these projects, it is still
affecting the application, and thus i think that we risk to see many
more users like Dietmar who are still affected by the bug (that is,
until the fix will be released in the normal updates), and thus think of
changing the status of the bug back to confirmed... especially for a bug
with an high notability like this one (many duplicates and many projects
affected)

[Bug 621927] Re: Embedded Terminal Emulator isn't giving a TERM variable

2010-10-12 Thread Dario Bertini
if the problem is to avoid presenting this bug as a thing to be worked
upon by the various developers team, i think there could be 3 different
compromises:

1- (would require an enhancement in launchpad or to workaround this with a tag)
set the bug-project combination of #621927 vte as blocking for all the other
projects
2- (since, to be certain that the bug depended only on vte, a fix had to be
developed, this shouldn't be a problem) set the bug as fix commited also for
all the other projects
3- set the bugs as confirmed, but ignore confirmed bugs in the workflow: only
work on triaged bugs... since the bug can't be really fixed in tilda, guake,
etc. in this case we could have reverted the state from triaged to
confirmed (using as definition of triaged: ready to be worked upon by the
developer)

i realize that to enhance launchpad another bug (or blueprint) should be
opened, but i'm writing this down also because it could be simply the
way that you work to be improved

obviously, by definition, it's the way _you_ work, so at the end of the
day it's only your decision that matters on how you decide to do these
things

[Bug 638975] Re: Inconsistent behaviour when clicking items

2010-10-04 Thread Dario Bertini
Setting this bug as affecting only evolution (since for now it's the
main culprit) as suggested by Ted Gould

** Description changed:

+ Evolution has an inconsistent behaviour respect to the other default
+ ubuntu applications using the messaging indicator, and doesn't fully
+ behave according to the recommendations:
+
+
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MessagingMenu#Recommended%20behavior%20for%20e-mail%20clients
+ signal should be set such that selecting an item from the menu focuses the
most relevant window to display that mailbox (for example a window that is
already displaying that mailbox, if one is open), and switches to the mailbox
if necessary.
+
+ the evolution window gets focused and the taskbars is alerted of the
+ change, but window isn't showed to the user to display the relevant
+ mailbox
+
+ (see down for more details)
+
+ --
+
  Binary package hint: indicator-messages

See the attached video (i've reduced the resolution to avoid getting a
  huge video)

Most of the time, when using the messaging menu to access mail or other
  things, the behaviour is inconsistent.

When the desktop is free from other windows, trying to access evolution
or gwibber moves our desktop to the target one.

On the other hand, when there is already a window on the current
desktop, trying to access gwibber will move it from its current desktop,
while trying to access evolution will alert the window (you can't see
it in the video, but it's like when a window request your attention by
becoming orange in the taskbar), and the user will have to manually
click through the item in the taskbar (or manually move to the other
  desktop) to access it.

Empathy as yet another behaviour: it's tipically dragged to the current
  desktop regardless of anything else.

[Bug 647632] [NEW] Find in text message doesn't warn about no matching found

2010-09-25 Thread Dario Bertini
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Open a message in nautilus
Press shift+ctrl+f
Search for an unmatching pattern (a random string like djkshglfs would be
fine)
It's not written anywhere that the pattern didn't matched

And:
by pressing enter (or next), it isn't warned about having reached the end of
page, until it has been pressed at least two times.

And worse:
by doing a sane search with some results (say, 3), and then modifying (without
clearing) the search field and doing the search again, at the right of the
search bar, it will still be displayed that there've been found 3 matches for
the search, even if the current search string is absent from the mail content.

[Bug 639627] [NEW] Spatial option doesn't apply immediately

[Bug 630844] [NEW] Evolution clock applet is slow and the popup position is skewed

Public bug reported:

I've attached a video... the clock applet popup is now unusable: instead
of instantly coming up, sometimes it takes a second, sometimes 2... and
(not in the video unfortunately) sometimes is really really hard to get
it to show

on top of this, the position of the popup is completely wrong (please
note that in the video i recorded up to the top of the screen, so one
portion of the popup is unreachable), the problem with positioning
actually happened in 2 sessions, but in another session was showing fine

[Bug 453072] Re: Context menu for an USB pendrive shows Unmount, Eject and Safely Remove Drive

2010-02-23 Thread Dario Bertini
I disagree with Michał Gołębiowski... i know the way around with the
terminal, but to say that the terminal is more convenient a priori is
simply wrong:

if we already have a place to manage the eject/umount of the devices,
with the users (all users, even advanced ones) accustomated to reach
there to perform the desired operation, it's unconvenient to force them
to think:

oh, right... i want to umount the device i'm seeing here in nautilus,
but here i can only eject it... if i want to umount i have to open (if
it's not already opened) a terminal and tab the way all to the
mountpoint

however i agree with the idea of presenting users with as few options as
possibile, and if there isn't a better solution i guess that removing it
altogether is better than what we have now...

maybe (since umount is typically used to repartition/format a volume) it
would be good if palimpsest supported partitioning or if gparted made
more visible their umount command (right now is in the context menu)

Sorry for the late response (being this a bug rather tedious to triage

my laptop has a strange bug with the lucid alpha2: the mouse pointer is

[Bug 474172] Re: 100% cpu and applet absent after wake from sleep

2009-11-22 Thread Dario Bertini
i have another problem with the gpm notify applet after wake up... i'm
unsure if i should report a new bug about it...

the applet is present, but it doesn't get updated with the right values
(this time it see a low battery value when it's in fact at about 80%...
another time it happened the other way round: it saw the battery still
being connected to the powerline when in fact it was discharging)

however this time there isn't an unusual cpu usage, and the estimate
time remaining seems correct (and is thus incosistent with the reported
battery charge)

i'll attach a screenshot (italian locale, but it roughly says: Notebook
battery, 1 hour and 30 minutes remaining (3,4%)) and do an apport-
collect

(i'd love to have such a uber-battery :D but unfortunately i don't know
how to reproduce this bug...)

[Bug 474172] [NEW] 100% cpu and applet absent after wake from sleep

2009-11-04 Thread Dario Bertini
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

today i woke my laptop from sleep and upon seeing that the remaining
battery had only 20 minutes left (so the power manager applet was
running fine) i plugged the charger...

then i saw the gnome-power-manager using 100% cpu and the applet
completely disappeared (after terminating gpm even firefox got stuck in
a similar way, so i'm not sure of this being a suspend/resume issue or a
gpm issue)

i'm not sure if it can be replicated easily

[Bug 449685] Re: After waking up from sleep, EEE 900 goes immediately back to sleep, once

2009-11-04 Thread Dario Bertini
i have the same problem (happens often but not all the time) on a
different hardware (macbook 3,1)...

i guess it's also related with bug 397839 (i even get the notify that
prompts to read the synopsis of this problem in
http://blogs.gnome.org/hughsie/2009/08/17/gnome-power-manager-and-
blanking-removal-of-bodges/)

but that bug (along the others on the same issues) are marked as fix
released, so i'm writing here since no one is paying attention on the
other reports...

[Bug 393188] [NEW] Segmentation fault due to malformed filters

2009-06-28 Thread Dario Bertini
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Due to bug #393184 i needed to close the filters window to search for a

to avoid losing the filter i started to put together, i decided to save

it was set to filter messages with a certain address (equal to, not
containing a string)... but the string which should have been compared
to the address was still empty (the reason for closing the window)...

upon saving this incomplete filter evolution closed itself, i reopened
it and it closed itself again...

launching evolution from terminal yields:

[Bug 392956] [NEW] Screen dimming behavior fails to recognize inactivity

2009-06-27 Thread Dario Bertini
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

with dim the screen when inactive if i leave the pc alone for a while,
it is recognized as inactive, and the screen is dimmed...

then if i move the mouse, the pc is again active, and the brightness is reset
to its last value... thus working fine...

but if i leave the mouse pointer on a menu, like: applications menu in ubuntu,
file menu in whatever gnome program, a contextual menu

after a while the pc is feeled as inactive and the screen dimmed

but if i move the mouse inside the menu:

from applications-games.-nexuiz to applications-games-chess to
applications-internet-firefox to system-administration

or from file-new to file-open... or from one voice in the contextual
menu to another...

the pc isn't sensed as active, and is kept dimmed indefinitely...
until i click somewhere, or exit briefly the menu...

should popup the right click button menu) and on the bottom left corner
where there's the play button...

actually i'm unable to replicate it... the plugin doesn't crash
anymore... althought the movie doesn't play (the play button is gray),
if i choose to open with the totem player the movie seems to play
fine...

i think that's a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/totem/+bug/147683

but i saw fine to open this because:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/totem/+bug/147683/comments/11

i don't use launchpad since quite a while... i presume the attachment is
being added automatically...

i appreciate that now launchpad checks for me if the bug is a
duplicate... but why there isn't a way to automatically add comment
attachment to that bug without opening a new one?

sorry for the bad english...

[Bug 85645] Re: Gaim crashed

2007-02-17 Thread Dario Bertini
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 72204 ***

ok, thank you, hovewer, the next time i find a bug already reported, how
can i check it? (especially in cases like this where i don't have any
clues on how it happened)

the crash log doesn't say much to me, since i'm merely a user.

Re: [Bug 79583] Re: gnome theme manager crashed (but not during the gnome standard session)

2007-01-19 Thread Dario Bertini
if you mean to work after the instruction

for i in `find /usr/share/icons -mindepth 1 -maxdepth 1 -type d`; do
sudo gtk-update-icon-cache $i; done

no, it seems nothing happens, to make everything come back to normal i
change the theme, but that instruction seems to have done nothing.

Does it work after running that? (The two error messages are somewhat
expected, so nothing to worry about.)

Might be a dup of 79362.

[Bug 79583] Re: gnome theme manager crashed (but not during the gnome standard session)

2007-01-18 Thread Dario Bertini
after i rebooted with another OS (knoppix), this time the emergency gnome
worked, i opened the gnome-theme-manager and i got the same error as before,
here it's the automatic report,
i'm sorry i can't say much more, how noob i am :(

hovewer i'll guess now i should purge the themes that doesn't belong to
the standard ubuntu and desist exploiting the gnome-look's goods, it's
better if i don't mess with themes or similar things

No theme index file in '/usr/share/icons/locolor'.
If you really want to create an icon cache here, use --ignore-theme-index.
