Just so happens that I trashed my system the other day and have a fresh (formatted / partition - used same /home partition) install of 8.10. Yes it was. Any other drives shown would also have been mounted. However the issue is NOT confined to USB drives. Anything above the divider seems to be fair game although I have not yet seen Trash grab the drag. Thanks for looking at this problem. I do appreciate it. As I see it it IS a bug! Here's what happens (3 times since upgrade to Ubuntu 8.04) after login as the final screen is being painted the mentioned error window appears. In each case I've (1) taken a screenshot and (2) saved it to the desktop intending to file a bug. Saving shouldn't work should it? In the process of performing that action the problem somehow disappears and start-up continues to normal completion. I've attached a screenshot perhaps that will convince someone that there IS a problem. The string of ?? is generated as soon as % is typed. I am not able to follow the temporary workaround. No matter how I edit the template I always get the ? as part of the name and the are appended.
