[Bug 629646] Re: Locations using bom.gov.au for forecast data no longer can no longer retrieve forecast data

2015-11-19 Thread David Clayton
The bug is back in Ubuntu 15.10 in libgweather 3.16.1-1ubuntu1

I just installed this release in preparation for the next Ubuntu LTS in
2016 and have seen that the earlier fixes of the Australian BOM
forecasts have not propagated through to this version.

I would add Wily to the list of affected versions but I cannot seem to
do it!

[Bug 269441] Re: Trash always full

2013-09-26 Thread David Clayton
It seems like the Trash icon has some sort of database of mounted drives
to keep tabs of items that have been deleted, and then does not refresh
this database to only display the status of actually mounted drives.

Since it can never Empty the trash of unmounted drives, the display
remains showing items to be removed on unmounted or removed drives (and
the removable drives could have their Trash actually emptied on other
systems anyway).

It seems that the Trash icon needs to hook into the mount/unmount
processes to keep itself only displaying the status of drives that are
actually mounted on the system at any particular time.

[Bug 761037] Re: Evolution failed to properly migrate Local Contacts during 2.32 (Natty) Upgrade

2012-03-14 Thread David Clayton
I can confirm this in a migration to 2.3.2 from 2.28.3 on my Ubuntu
10.04 system. The files in the old .evolution tree were converted/moved
to the new .local/share/evolution tree but only the first local Address
Book worked.

To sum up, only the first On This Computer address book sources entry
was converted correctly with the relative URI, the remaining Address
Books still had the file path to the old .evolution file path left in
their definitions.

Manually removing the old uri=file:. entries using the gconf-
editor on the /apps/evolution/addressbook/sources key fixed the problem
and then allowed the data in those extra Address Books to appear.

[Bug 955673] [NEW] Ubuntu One Contact Address Book does not migrate correctly

2012-03-14 Thread David Clayton
Public bug reported:

Using Evolution on 12.04 B1 when migrating from 10.04 LTS system
(existing /home folder from 10.04 used) results in CouchDB Ubuntu One
Address Book not working on 12.04 system. Evolution version on 10.04 is
2.28.3, 12.04 version is 3.2.3. All other Address Books seem to migrate
ok.

Error message is:
-
This address book cannot be opened. This either means that an incorrect URI
was entered, or the server is unreachable.

Detailed error message: Invalid source
-
And you cannot delete this Address Book to remove the error whenever you access
this book.

I believe that the issue might be that CouchDB is no longer used in
12.04, but it still gets migrated from the old 10.04 /home folder setup.

Given that many 10.04 LTS users may well stay with Evolution in 12.04,
this could be a significant issue for those of us who will do this.

[Bug 214370] Re: Logout/Shutdown Sound Not Working

2012-03-03 Thread David Clayton
Perhaps there needs to be a new category for developers to put these
sort of things in:

Too hard to resolve, and we are busy playing with new stuff to be
bothered with this?

BTW, if Gnome is going to keep evolving into a touchscreen interface, is
there going to be a new politically correct name for it as something
like Touch-Gnome seems a bit too creepy to me?

[Bug 531762] Re: System monitor System tab should show architecture (32/64bit)

2011-11-05 Thread David Clayton
System settings now has a System Info icon, which shows the 64-bit in
the OS type field of the overview.

Fixed if you ask me, this bug can be closed

Quite the opposite, in fact. If the code already exists to show this
missing data then it should be trivial to patch this package and
actually fix it properly.

It is a very poor excuse to tell people to assemble the information that
they may need from multiple sources because of essentially trivial
deficiencies in one source.

The System info doesn't even tell you the kernel or Gnome versions
that are running, both important items when a novice user is asked to
provide info about their system when asking for help, so that cannot be
considered as any replacement for the more information provided by the
System Monitor package.

[Bug 879305] [NEW] POP Leave messages on server now requires Days

2011-10-21 Thread David Clayton
Public bug reported:

Evolution 3.x has changed in the POP Receiving Options to have the
Leave Messages On Server selection linked to the Days value. In
Evolution 2.x (and probably previous versions) these options were
separate.

This is very confusing for users who want *all* their POP messages left
on the server with no day filtering, and seems non-standard when
compared to previous Evolution versions and just about every other POP
client that I have encountered.

If the Leave messages on server option is selected, then the Days
option should also be required to enabled, not left permanently enabled
as if the current situation.

[Bug 629646] Re: Locations using bom.gov.au for forecast data no longer can no longer retrieve forecast data

2011-10-20 Thread David Clayton
Over 12 months now and a bug THAT HAS A WORKING PATCH AVAILABLE has
still not been fixed.

I just did a test install of Ubuntu 11.10 and the bug is still there,
yet a dopey user like myself was previously able to use the patch files
to fix the Australian only file which causes the problem - but the
maintainers of this package cannot make this seemingly trivial change.

Looks good when I show a Windows user how great Linux is and they ask
why this bit doesn't work and I tell them that it was reported over 12
months ago - not!

Wassup?

[Bug 770697] [NEW] LDAP search filter affects separate Exchange global address list

2011-04-26 Thread David Clayton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

After setting up an Exchange account and finally getting the Global
Address List to work, changing the search filter on a separate LDAP
Contacts list to the same server affects the Exchange Contacts listings
but NOT the LDAP Contacts listings! I will spell this out - the filter
does nothing on the account you set the filter on - but it affects
another Contacts account that should have nothing to do with this
particular LDAP account.

This is firstly the opposite of the anticipated behaviour, and the are
also no areas in the Exchange account properties to set up any LDAP
filters to refine the returned results or any mention to use a separate
LDAP account to get this functionality.

[Bug 629646] Re: Locations using bom.gov.au for forecast data no longer can no longer retrieve forecast data

And to add to my previous whinge about how this patch could be of use to
people in Australia, I certainly hope that none of the hundreds of
thousands of people affected by the recent flash floods along the east
coast here Ubuntu users trying to use this weather applet.

With the Australian BOM using every available means to try and warn the
population about these devastating events is seems a shame that the
method someone using a Linux computer would have of possibly seeing
these warnings was not available to them.

[Bug 214370] Re: Logout/Shutdown Sound Not Working

2011-01-19 Thread David Clayton
While this issue is personally annoying to me, I find it has an
implication way above the hundred paper cuts level in that Windows
users considering moving to Linux hit something like this and come away
with an attitude like If they can't get something as simple and basic
as playing a shutdown sound working, how can I trust Linux to work
correctly in other more important areas?

Quite frankly, despite all the valid reasons for the essential lack of
priority in fixing this feature, I can't disagree with that conclusion.

[Bug 629646] Re: Locations using bom.gov.au for forecast data no longer can no longer retrieve forecast data

2010-12-30 Thread David Clayton
While I can understand something like this being considered fairly
trivial, I would like to point out to the developers that in my very
location (Victoria, Australia) less than 2 years ago hundreds of people
died here in bushfires, and some of that was because of a lack of
information regarding weather conditions - so anything that provides up
to date weather info is considered by us to have a bit more importance
than perhaps it is in other locales.

As to those who want to update their own system with a patched file, go
to the upstream bug report and follow the posts on how it was done:

[Bug 694213] [NEW] No display of UTF-7 encoded message

2010-12-24 Thread David Clayton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I now receive log messages from a Windows SBS 2008 server that do not
display at all (just a totally empty message pane under the date) in
Evolution, although there is actual content (actual delivery domain
address munged):

[Bug 659014] [NEW] Deleted MAPI account leaves Calendar, Tasks and Memos entries

2010-10-12 Thread David Clayton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I successfully set up a MAPI account to an Exchange 2003 server and then
subsequently removed that account.

Unfortunately in my Calendar, Tasks and Memos was an entry for that MAPI
account that I could not delete with the GUI.

Every time I went to these windows I was prompted for a password to
connect to the Exchange server, even though I had already deleted the
associated mail account!

I had to use the gconf-editor to manually delete the respective settings
and get these things off my Evolution screens.

[Bug 587387] Re: Weather Report applet no longer retreives forecast at my location (Melbourne, Australia)

2010-09-07 Thread David Clayton
Yep, the Sydney HTML page has now the same fancy formatting as Melbourne
- with (obviously) the same problem now.

The FTP site URL I posted previously has ALL the Australian city
forecast data in plain text identified by the existing BOM codes, it
would seem trivial to me for the code to be changed to use this site -
as recommended by the BOM for exactly this sort of thing.

[Bug 630559] [NEW] Typing Break displays incorrectly when using Xinerama

2010-09-04 Thread David Clayton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

On my 10.04 system the Typing Break prompt screen displays ok when I
have my ATI video dual display setting set to individual or single
displays, but when I have Xinerama mode set (where multiple desktops are
combined as one virtual desktop) the Typing Break prompt screen seems to
try and display across the multiple screens and the Postpone icon is no
longer where you expect it.

It is like the algorithm that tries to grey out the display mistakenly
treats the overall combined screen resolution area as one single
display, where in fact it is still two (or more) individual displays and
should be treated as such (as the Gnome panels still do in this mode
only displaying on the primary monitor).

It still functions ok, but just looks weird.

[Bug 269441] Re: Trash always full

2010-08-03 Thread David Clayton
Yep, it knows there are Trash items in the now removed device but
should not really remain in that status once the device is removed.
Putting the device back in allows you to empty the trash and reset the
status of the icon.

Something in the remove script needs to either reset or refresh the
Trash status so it is accurate for still mounted/attached devices.

[Bug 587387] Re: Weather Report applet no longer retreives forecast at my location (Melbourne, Australia)

2010-07-30 Thread David Clayton
AFAIK you don't, the developers have to change the code of where they
obtain the various location information to directly use the BOM FTP site
- any other location is not guaranteed by the BOM to be reliable as they
make changes to their web sites.

I spent time looking in the configuration files that I could find and
could not locate any places for URLs to override the current settings.

It would be nice if the developers of this function allowed people to
directly enter URLs to fill the various screens (like they do with the
weather Radar), then people not in the major cities could directly
select available forecast info for their locality which may not
currently be the selection lists we see now.

Ok, here is the reply from the BOM (the maintainers for this applet may want to
consider using the FTP site instead of the HTML page as it looks like the
others will be broken soon):
--
Hi David

Thank you for your request regarding the accessing forecasts through the
Bureau's web services. We are continually making changes to improve the
site as a result of public feedback and we expect to introduce html
formats across the site for all states. As far as access to our products
for use in automated systems, you should consider using our ftp site as
the preferred method. For forecasts go to the following URL:
ftp://ftp2.bom.gov.au/anon/gen/fwo , and look for IDV10450.

I trust this will satisfy your request.

[Bug 608597] [NEW] Nautilus memory not released when closed

2010-07-22 Thread David Clayton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When I open Nautilus and then close the (only) window, Nautilus remains
in the process table consuming memory.

The process remains spawned off the gnome-session process for the user
that initiated it, and seems to sit there forever instead of closing and
releasing the memory for other uses.

The ~190MiB that Nautilus consumes for each user that may have spawned
it is not trivial for a program that is not running.

[Bug 608597] Re: Nautilus memory not released when closed

2010-07-22 Thread David Clayton
So when I start a root Nautilus screen (either via the nautilus-gksu
package or manually) and then close it, I have to live with ~190MiB of
memory permanently used until my system is rebooted or I manually kill
that process?

If I manually end the Nautilus process via the System Manager (user
and/or root processes) my system still mounts devices and seem to
operate as normal (the script that changes my desktop background on a
regular basis runs as normal). If Nautilus is not in memory in my
system, when devices are mounted the Nautilus window appears (as normal)
to show the files, and again it remains in memory if the sole Nautilus
window is closed.

If my system seems to operate normally without Nautilus in memory, then
why is it necessary for it to always be there?

Nautilus is not a trivial user of memory resources, it does not make a
lot of sense if it firstly remains using that resource when run as root,
and secondly if it does not actually have to remain in memory for normal
Gnome functionality for the logged in user.

[Bug 587387] Re: Weather Report applet no longer retreives forecast at my location (Melbourne, Australia)

2010-07-20 Thread David Clayton
I have just discovered that the BOM have been experimenting with the
formatting of the Melbourne forecast page that is used to extract the
info the applet presents:

http://www.bom.gov.au/vic/forecasts/melbourne.shtml

The forecast text is currently massaged to be full of HTML formatting
whereas cities like Sydney and Brisbane still have plain text and still
work in the applet.

I have just made a complaint on the BOM web site about this (IMHO
useless) change and requested them to return the Melbourne page to what
it was previously (so the applet will again work).

[Bug 595823] Re: Non-admin users can format removable media

2010-06-19 Thread David Clayton
I understand the rationale of allowing some users control of their
External devices to the extent of formatting, but there is no way I know
of to restrict this ability if you didn't actually want them to do it.

With so many people these days storing important data on external
storage devices, this mindset of treating external USB storage devices
*differently* to internal storage now seems out of date to me. This
mindset may have been valid from the days of floppy drives and even up
until recently where USB storage was considered as a sort of second-
class method of storing data, but times have changed and even though I
can see this functionality as useful to the right people, having it as
an unavoidable feature available to every class of Ubuntu user is just
playing with fire. That is basically why I consider this a security
issue, if some part of the definition of security means preventing users
having the ability to permanently delete data on a system (that is not
necessarily *their* data) when perhaps they should not have that
ability.

I'll just wait in the forums until a post pops up saying that little
Johnny formatted my 1TB external drive where we had all our kiddies
movies stored on, even though I thought I created his account as a
normal unprivileged user and only gave him read-only access to the files
so he could just play them, please help me recover the files as they
were really important to us.

non-admin users be permitted to format storage?

Formatting using existing tools such as gparted require a sudo password,
but now Linux bypasses this obvious security requirement for some
nebulous user convenience, what is this OS becoming, Windows?

Fine that users with Administration rights have this sort of
functionality, but non-admin users should not have this capability
either through Nautilus or the Disk Utility.

I'm putting in a security bug now over this.

[Bug 58205] Re: Should provide Right-Click-Format...

2010-06-18 Thread David Clayton
I created a new user with the standard Desktop User privileges,
checked that it did not have System Admin rights and then logged in as
that user. I put in a USB drive and I can right-click format that drive
*without* any further restriction or Authorisation request, so yes I do
think that is a security problem.

If formatting media is suddenly allowed BY DEFAULT for normal Desktop
Users (I do not believe that it was available before this Ubuntu
release like this, all formatting functions required sudo access)
without requiring Authorisation then I'd like to know where the line of
Admin versus Desktop Users privileges actually is now?

[Bug 595825] Re: Non-admin users can format removable media

2010-06-18 Thread David Clayton
Ok, my concept of security encompasses *all* the data that the user has
access to, whether connected via internal storage or external storage so
that is why I considered this a Security Vulnerability, obviously that
is not the commonly accepted definition in this domain.

I sort of find it amusing that an External storage device may well have
various file system permission settings to prevent users from
writing/deleting data, but apparently it is accepted that they can still
format the entire device anyway...

Anyway, I created a new user with standard Desktop User privileges,
logged in as that user, inserted a USB drive and was able to format that
drive without any request for further authorisation.

I do not believe any formatting tools were available in previous Ubuntu
releases that did not require sudo authorisation to run, so that is why
I consider this new functionality to be a security issue.

I will investigate the Policykit option.

[Bug 587387] [NEW] Weather Report applet no longer retreives forecast at my location (Melbourne, Australia)

2010-05-29 Thread David Clayton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

Since the local weather bureau made some changes to their web site
structure I now get Forecast not currently available for this
location. in the Forecast tab.

I have tested other Australian locations (Sydney, Canberra, Hobart) and
they work ok, just the various Victorian locations don't work.

I would say that the scripts that extract this info for the Victorian
locations need to be tweaked to take the site changes into account.

If someone could push this upstream to the developers it would be
appreciated.

[Bug 215541] Re: Imap mail Filtering broken as of 11/04/08

2010-05-22 Thread David Clayton
Ok, this is still an issue on Ubuntu 10.04 Evolution 2.28.3 on existing
Evolution profiles upgraded from earlier releases.

I have created a fresh profile on a different user and the IMAP
filtering works, but on my existing system that has been preserved in a
separate /home partition through numerous upgrades it will not filter on
IMAP e-mails as the OP has described.

Most people will be using upgraded systems and not creating a fresh
Evolution profile every time a new version comes along, so there needs
to be a proper resolution to this with someone taking the time to find
the invalid configuration item that is causing this issue.

[Bug 215541] Re: Imap mail Filtering broken as of 11/04/08

2010-05-22 Thread David Clayton
Ok, more information.

I renamed my existing .evolution profile, let Evolution create a fresh
one and the IMAP filtering works as expected (as described above in the
other posts).

I then renamed the folders to get my existing data back, and then found
it was now IMAP filtering as expected - bizarre!

I have also found that changing the IMAP Inbox filtering option only
takes effect after shutting down and restarting the Evolution client.

[Bug 239952] Re: firefox - the associated helper application does not exist

2010-04-26 Thread David Clayton
I am getting this on FF 3.5.9 on 9.04 on this forum:

https://xythos.lsu.edu/users/abaksh1/web/si.html

All of the PDFs open fine except the last one.

Yep, same on my FF 3.6.3 10.04 - weird as the html looks ok and the
other links work ok.

On my system I get the prompt to Open or Save the file for all of them,
it is only after using Open that the error message for this file
partially load in the Viewer, then the viewer exits with this error
message.

I suspect that it is a problem with the Document Viewer/Firefox
interface rather than FF itself - when the Viewer crashed/exits FF
responds to that situation with the message we see.

[Bug 569724] [NEW] trash icon not empty after usb device unmounted

2010-04-25 Thread David Clayton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

When items on a mounted external USB device are sent to Trash, the Trash
Icon show that it has contents.

If the external device is then unmounted/removed, the Trash Icon still
shows contents even though opening the trash shows nothing there and
doing a Empty Garbage Bin still does not reset it to empty.

Plugging in the same external device allows Trash to be emptied, but
there is no real guarantee that a device will ever be plugged in again
so whatever displays the Trash icon really needs to be updated on every
mount/unmount operation if it is to provide an accurate status.

That was last in 9.04 and the newer Gnome versions have not had any GUI

change things is to replace the original .ogg files in the Ubuntu theme

[Bug 537052] [NEW] Theme previews in Appearence now incorrect due to moved window control icons

2010-03-10 Thread David Clayton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Because Ubuntu 10.04 alpha now has decided to move the Window control
icons (Maximise, Minimise,Close) to the LHS of all windows, all the
previews of available Themes are now misleading as they show these icons
in their traditional positions on the RHS.

This will be confusing to users as they will expect a theme to actually
look like the preview - otherwise why bother having the preview at all?

I personally thought that the LHS icons were just part of a new theme
and was most disappointed when I could not revert back to normal just
by selecting a different theme. When I found out that I had to use the
gconf editor to hack the relevant Metacity definition to fix things (a
most user-unfriendly feature) I was more disappointed.

And to add a new level of bogosity to this bug, I have discovered that
the actual Logout sound played depends on the particular behaviour of
Pulseaudio at the time of initiating a Shutdown/Reboot (Logoffs seem
100% ok). Sometimes my correct sound is played, other times the cached
default sound theme shutdown sound is played on my system.

It seems entirely user based, I can create new user accounts that seem
to work 100% correctly all of the time, but my main account has this
variability. I have now spent hours trying to pinpoint the cause on my
system, but I am about to admit defeat...

[Bug 214370] Re: Logout/Shutdown Sound Not Working

2009-12-20 Thread David Clayton
This works on my Ubuntu 9.04 system (tested with multiple user
accounts).

Edit the following file:

/etc/gdm/PostSession/Default

And add this in before the exit 0:

/usr/share/gnome/shutdown/libcanberra-logout-sound.sh

Now your logout of a Gnome session should play whatever logout sound you
have specified (do I get a lollipop for this?).

[Bug 498040] [NEW] evolution allows deletion of default views

2009-12-17 Thread David Clayton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When a custom view is created in Calendars-Views-Current View-Define
Views, you can then delete it from the list as the Delete option is
available (greyed out for the default views - as you would expect).

Unfortunately once you delete your custom view, the Delete option is
still active on a now selected default view, so you can now
(accidentally) delete these!

As per this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8517835 how
do you restore these default views?

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04

[Bug 197290] Re: 2 gb max inbox

2009-11-16 Thread David Clayton
I believe that 64-bit versions do not have this 2GB limit. I seem to
recall doing tests to confirm this a couple of years ago when I moved to
64-bit Ubuntu.

If this is a reference to the Fast User Switcher applet, that delay can
simply be turned off in the Preferences by deselecting the Confirm

Either it plays the *whole* sound the user anticipates or the feature is
removed - having something as basic as this not working correctly for so
long is amateurish.

[Bug 372503] [NEW] Updating calendar appointment All instances freezes Evolution and corrupts calendar file

2009-05-05 Thread David Clayton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When changing an existing or new repeating appointment, after selecting
the change All instances Evolution freezes and has to be force closed.
When restarted, going into the Calendar freezes Evolution again.
Restoring previous ~.evolution/calendar/local/system/calendar.ics files
restores normal operation.

Item was a repeating appointment created for midday Wednesday (duration
90 minutes) and repeating each week for 500 weeks, I then went to change
the Alarm to 3 hours before with a single repeat 150 minutes before,
changing the single instance worked ok, but when I went to change all
instances the problem arose.

Here is a diff output of a working calendar.ics and then the one with a
minor change (150 minutes to 149 minutes repeat occurrence) that
subsequently freezes Evolution:

d...@dc-master:~/.evolution/calendar/local/system$ diff calendar.ics

is inserted into the bad file, and manually deleting it restores
