improving the error dialog, not about fixing the underlying problem,
which I guess could be another bug report.

[Bug 1646403] [NEW] Erro message when clicking "Windows Network" needs to be improved

2016-12-01 Thread David D Lowe
Public bug reported:

After opening Files, clicking "Other locations" in the sidebar, and
clicking the Windows Network icon, I get an error dialog, saying:

> Unable to access location
>
> Failed to retrieve share list from server: No such file or directory

Regardless of what is causing the error, there needs to be a better
error message. I got the same error message before installing `samba`
and now I still get it. The error message should help me discover what
is happening and how to fix it.

[Bug 1168747] [NEW] Removing a user's password effectively locks them out of admin privileges

2013-04-13 Thread David D Lowe
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 882255 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/882255

Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce this bug:

- Log in with a user who has admin privileges
- Open User Accounts from System Settings
- Click Unlock and authenticate yourself
- Click on the Password field.
- Set Action to Log in without a password
- Click on Change

(Same steps with screenshots can be found in this answer:
http://askubuntu.com/a/281093/2355 )

This successfully sets the user's password to empty. However, it does
not ensure that sudoers includes a NOPASSWD directive, so the user now
can longer use sudo, gksu, pkexec or PolicyKit to authenticate themself
to gain admin rights.

What I expected to happen:

This functionality should be disabled for users with admin rights, or
the sudoers file should be modified as appropriate, and PolicyKit made
to work for users without a password.

[Bug 1168749] [NEW] User accounts tool cannot set password for a user that has an empty password set

2013-04-13 Thread David D Lowe
Public bug reported:

If an active user account has been given an empty password using passwd
-d, or using the User Accounts tool, the User Accounts tool cannot set
a new password, as the Change button is always greyed out.

[Bug 268946] Re: gpg-encrypted files have no icon

2011-05-23 Thread David D Lowe
Here's what needs to be done:

An icon for application/pgp-encrypted mimetype needs to be created. None
of the icons found in /usr/share/pixmaps/seahorse/ are suitable, as none
of them represent an encrypted file. This icon should follow Tango icon
theme guidelines. It should be installed under /usr/share/icons/hicolor/
and shipped with seahorse's package.

The same icon needs to be created but following Humanity's style. It
should be installed under /usr/share/icons/Humanity and /usr/share/icons
/Humanity-Dark and shipped with humanity-icon-theme's package.

[Bug 538204] [NEW] Window controls are on the wrong side in gnome-appearance-properties

2010-03-12 Thread David D Lowe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

The preview images in System, Preferences, Appearance (gnome-appearance-
properties) do not match the user's settings: the window controls are
not in their correct positions. In other words, in Lucid, the maximise,
minimise and close buttons are on the left side of the window titlebar,
whereas they're on the right side in the list of themes displayed in the
Appearance utility.

The preview images in the list of themes and the list of window borders (when
customising the selected theme) should reflect the user's settings,
specifically, this gconf key:
/apps/metacity/general/button_layout

This bug is related to bug #532633, as the new position of the window
controls make this bug obvious. If the maximise, minimise and close
buttons were reverted to their original positions, this bug would not be
noticeable, unless the user changed the gconf setting by themselves.

[Bug 25827] Re: Thumbnails for Openoffice.org documents

2009-03-18 Thread David D Lowe
I've written a thumbnailer bash script, that uses imagemagick if it's
installed, if not, totem-gstreamer-video-thumbnailer. Unfortunately, the
latter puts film strips or film rolls in the image, giving the user
the impression that the file is a video, not a document. Any one know
how I could disable this behaviour? Is there another program that's
installed by default that I could use? evince-thumbnailer unfortunately
keeps the transparency in the image.

[Bug 281812] [NEW] gdmsetup has duplicate style options for Themed

2008-10-11 Thread David D Lowe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Under the local tab of gdmsetup, or Login Window preferences, there are four
options for Style:
- Plain
- Plain with face browser
- Themed
- Themed with face browser

The last two options are actually identical, and thus confusing to the
user. gdmsetup does not filter the themes based on whether they have
face browsers or not, depending on the style selected. Furthermore, if a
user selects a gdm theme, gdm will display the face browser depending on
the theme itself, not depending on the which one of the last two styles
the user has selected, so the distinction is irrelevant.

What I expected to happen is to only see three options under Style:
Plain, Plain with face browser and Themed.

[Bug 274865] [NEW] [intrepid alpha]power applet incorrect status when plugged in

2008-09-26 Thread David D Lowe
Public bug reported:

unplugged status, as the screenshot demonstrates. I expected the plugged-in
icon to appear. The tooltip says:

Laptop battery discharging (9.7%)
Battery discharge time is currently unknown
(Notice the contradiction?)
When I plug in my laptop, the icon is as expected, and the tooltip says:

[Bug 241251] Re: menu seperator had label

2008-06-26 Thread David D Lowe
Yes, I just tested, I have the same problem with Glade 3.4.5 on Hardy.
BTW, to fix the flawed XML that was generated, I had to delete both:
property name=label translatable=yesmenuitemHaha/property
and
property name=use_underlineTrue/property

[Bug 241251] [NEW] menu seperator had label

2008-06-19 Thread David D Lowe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: glade-3

Here are the steps to reproduce the problem using Glade 3.4.1:
- Create a new window, add a menu bar to it.
- Right click the menu bar, click edit
- Add an image stock preferences menu item after gtk-delete in the Edit menu.
- Add a menu item betwenn the preferences menu item and the gtk-delete menu item
- By default this menu item is of type Normal, change the label to something
else, in my case menutiemHaha
- Now change the type to seperator.
- Save
In glade, the menu item will appear as a seperator, however, when using the
glade file in a simple python pygtk app, the item will appear as a normal menu
item, with a label.
Upon examining the glade file in a text editor, I found the offending piece of
XML:
widget class=GtkSeparatorMenuItem id=menuitem6
 property name=visibleTrue/property
 property name=eventsGDK_POINTER_MOTION_MASK | GDK_POINTER_MOTION_HINT_MASK
| GDK_BUTTON_PRESS_MASK | GDK_BUTTON_RELEASE_MASK/property
 property name=label translatable=yesmenuitemHaha/property
 property name=use_underlineTrue/property
/widget
The element property with the name label should have been deleted.

Attached is the glade file generated by Glade and not edited by hand.
