[Bug 1766890] Re: package gnome-menus 3.13.3-6ubuntu3.1 failed to install/upgrade: triggers looping, abandoned
@seb, per discussion via IRC, here are my logs from /var/log/dist- upgrade (upgrade started last night and finally wrapped up this morning after a lot of coffee and swearing). To answer the questions: I started off with 'do-release-upgrade -d' last night and ended up this morning with a reboot into rescue mode and a lot of 'apt-get -f install', 'dpkg --reconfigure -a' and finally an 'apt-get dist-upgrade' (or was it a -f install again?) to get the remaining held 2400+ packages updated. NOW I believe I'm finally updated to Bionic and running again. Also, will asked if I had manually modified anything in /etc/apt/sources.list and the answer is no, all that was handled by the upgrader. ** Attachment added: "xenial-bionic-upgrade-logs.tgz" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-menus/+bug/1766890/+attachment/5127748/+files/xenial-bionic-upgrade-logs.tgz -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-menus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1766890 Title: package gnome-menus 3.13.3-6ubuntu3.1 failed to install/upgrade: triggers looping, abandoned To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/oem-priority/+bug/1766890/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1766890] Re: package gnome-menus 3.13.3-6ubuntu3.1 failed to install/upgrade: triggers looping, abandoned
FWIW, this error (my bug was marked a duplicate) completely broke my Xenial - Bionic upgrade, leaving me with a nearly unbeatable system. I had to boot into Rescue Mode and do a lot of ctrl-C ing to get around this, and once I thought it had finally installed all the bionic packages, I rebooted into the OS proper, and STILL found it hadn't actually upgraded so I had to run 'apt-get -f install' again to finish the other 2400+ package updates. I spent most of my morning just trying to get back to a bootable system that was only half-way upgraded (lsb-release told me I was in 18.04, name -a said I was still on 4.13 from 16.04.4, and apt said I still had 2400+ packages to update). If I was not an experienced user who knew roughly how to manually kick this stuff to get around broken package updates, I'd have been considerably more upset than I already am. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-menus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1766890 Title: package gnome-menus 3.13.3-6ubuntu3.1 failed to install/upgrade: triggers looping, abandoned To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/oem-priority/+bug/1766890/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1548933] Re: It only shows installed apps, not available ones
Hrmmm... appstream-util was not installed (why is that not installed by default, or perhaps it is now but wasn't when I installed Xenial originally a couple weeks ago). Since appstream-util was never installed in the first place, the first thing I did was simply run update-manager to update the cache (isn't that the same action as apt-get update?) That seems to have fixed it... so, are the apt-cache and whatever update-manager is using not the same cache? (I don't tend to use GUI tools, this is Linux, I use CLI stuff and have been using apt for years to maintain and install packages). I also manage this system with landscape, so how does that tie into this? am I now going to need to remember to run update manager before trying to use gnome-software even though the system is kept up to date daily via Landscape? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-software in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1548933 Title: It only shows installed apps, not available ones To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-software/+bug/1548933/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 876658] [NEW] [Thinkpad T510] Brasero fails to find blank CD or DVD media on this system's DVD-RAM drive

[Bug 852131] [NEW] [Thinkpad x201] File browse does not launch when media cards are inserted
Public bug reported: Doing some exploratory testing on Oneiric with the latest daily ISO and updates for 16 Sept 2011. During testing with checkbox, I tested the MMC reader by inserting various cards. The cards (SD and SDHC) were recognized and mounted by the kernel, but in each case, the file browser did not launch. No icon for drive appears on the launcher. In fact, Unity gives no indication at all that the card was even recognized. I had to check dmesg and mount to make sure the cards were actually mounted and visible. Expected outcome: when SD cards are inserted and mounted, the file broswer should open displaying the contents, or at the very least, a launcher should appear on the dock providing obvious access to that card (along with some sort of notification to the user that the card is ready to use). [Bug 792636] Re: Power section no longer allows configuration of when the lid is closed action in Oneiric
Why should a user have to install gnome-tweak (assuming they knew what gnome-tweak was to begin with)? This was easily configurable previously, someone just decided that users wouldn't want to actually prevent their system from suspending when the lid is closed. But expecting the majority of users to start editing config files manually, or intuiting that there's something called gnome-tweak that will allow them to actually configure the power settings on their system isn't a proper solution for an OS geared towards the masses. To be honest, I'm NOT a typical user, and this is really the first time I've ever heard of gnome-tweak myself. Is there any benefit to NOT allowing users to configure this behaviour in the system configuration tools that ship with Ubuntu? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/792636 Title: Power section no longer allows configuration of when the lid is closed action in Oneiric To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/792636/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 792636] Re: Power section no longer allows configuration of when the lid is closed action in Oneiric
Dave: No worries :) I actually appreciate your workaround, and learning about gnome-tweak, something I've never needed before. Like I said, it is fine for you and I, but not Mom and Dad (for most samples of Mom and Dad). I am just more frustrated that, as Tom points out, this seems to be a philosophical change, rather than one of any technical merit. And I'm firmly on the other side of the debate here, as I am strongly against too much dumbing down of Linux. Make it easier to use for the average person, sure, but don't make it brain-dead. One of the BIGGEST draws to Linux aside from stability is that you can configure SO MUCH so easily, and limiting this, IMHO, takes away from Linux instead of adding any real value.
Tom: Thanks for the link... that's an interesting read, and unfortunately, they lost me completely at the statement :The other reason not to include this setting is, of course, that it is another setting and, as we all know, settings kill kittens. This is NOT Another setting, it's an existing setting. It did not ADD to the pool of existing settings, it was already there to begin with. And from reading the comments I can see that I am not in the minority in having issue with removing this functionality.
[Bug 825379] [NEW] brasero no longer appears in the app lens after updating alpha 3
Public bug reported: At some point, and update has removed brasero from the app lens. I'm doing testing using Alpha 3 with all the latest updates as of this morning (12 Aug). On other systems I tested earlier this week, Brasero was easy to find by searching for brasero or even cd or dvd in the application lens. Today, however, nothing I can thing of to search for returns a launcher for Brasero. I can still run the program from a terminal, so it's there, and works (I've successfully burned CD and DVDs on two other test systems today) but it's just not launchable anymore from the app lens. If I just insert a blank disk into the drive, the CD/DVD Creator launches, but that provides no way that I can tell to burn an existing ISO image to disk, it only give the option to drag/drop files onto the disk and burn them afterwards. [Bug 771824] [NEW] pointer speed/acceleration should be device specific, not generic
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center Different types of pointing devices behave differently, and so settings like acceleration and movement speed should be set by device rather than generically tied to pointer. For example, I'm using a ThinkPad x201. This has the IBM trackpoint (the red joystick nub in the keyboard), a touchpad and I am using a bluetooth Apple Magic Mouse. When I'm not using the bluetooth mouse, I typically use a combination of the pointer and the touchpad (for example, when working on a plane, or in a restaurant). These devices typically need a faster acceleration set to make pointer movements more efficient. So I set the acceleration higher to account for the much smaller surface area of the touchpad and the limited movement of the trackpoint. BUT, as soon as I connect my Magic Mouse, it takes on the same acceleration settings as I had set for the other devices, and becomes all but unusable because it's far faster by default when moving the pointer. So, the means that I, the user, must set the mouse properties manually every time I use one or the other. So when I don't have my bluetooth mouse connected, I have to set the acceleration up to compensate for the slow trackpoint/touchpad devices. when I do connect the mouse, I have to manually slow down the acceleration to make the mouse behave properly. Expected results: I should be able to set a profile for each pointing device with settings set accordingly. So I can set one set of parameters for the built-in devices and one set for my bluetooth mouse, and perhaps a third profile for a different USB mouse. Or at the very least, generic parameters set for decice TYPE. So built- in devices get one profile and config while external devices get another. [Bug 710441] [NEW] widgets in gnome-panel move about after reboots.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel Please see attached screenshots to really get what's going on. The issue is that widgets in the gnome-panel don't seem to enjoy staying where I place them. See screenshot one. That was the state of the panel after several reboots. Now see screenshot number 2. That's where I had placed them originally, and screenshot 2 shows where I've placed them again. Now see screenshot number 3. That's after one reboot. Notice that they've started migrating away from each other again. And that's not the worst. While I don't have a screenshot to post, unfortunately, I've rebooted and found them in completely random order before... for example, the Me Menu would be way to the left of everything else, while ONE or TWO of the processor monitors would be at the far right where the Power button is supposed to be. I don't quite understand WHY they insist on moving around. I understand the need to explore new territory, but for now, I'd like them to all stay at home where I placed them. [Bug 675731] [NEW] Evolution crashes (but leaves no core dump and does not trigger apport) randomly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution Another bit of Evolution fun... I've noticed that since upgrading to 10.10, Evolution crashes randomly. Some times it's opening a folder, sometimes when clicking on Send on a new message, sometimes when marking a message as read. In the latter example, I saw today, Evolution would crash EVERY time I clicked the Read/Unread icon next to a message in one of my folders. I finally thought I'd try running strace and seeing if I could capture the system calls made at the time of the crash, however, when run through systrace, the crash did NOT occur, even though without strace, the crash occurred 5 out of 5 times when attempting to mark that message unread. So at a first guess, I am thinking that maybe there's some sort of race condition going on that strace is mitigating. I also attempted this before when evolution kept crashing while clicking Send on new messages (still does this too) and so I ran evolution for several hours through strace and never managed to get a crash. I DID, however, end up with a 40GB log file from strace :( I will look at running evolution through valgrind too and see if I can catch anything, but I'm not hopeful that this will be any different than when running via strace. [Bug 672733] [NEW] Automatic Mark as Read fails if the first message presented on folder opening is new.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution This may be a bit difficult to explain... In Evolution, I currently have it configured to mark a new message as read 0.5 seconds after I open the message. So, for example, I open my inbox folder and there are 50 messages total and 5 marked Unread. I click on one of the 5 Unread messages and open it. Evolution then marks that message as read about 0.5 seconds after I open the message and start reading it. When I open a folder, evolution opens up a message automatically. IN some cases, this is the last message read, in some cases, it's the first unread message. The bug exists when the second case is met. When I open a folder and evolution automatically opens an Unread message, that unread message is NOT automatically marked read. Instead, I have to open a different message and then return to that message to have it marked Read. This becomes an even bigger issue when I open a folder that contains exactly ONE message. if I purge the contents of a folder, then get a new message in that folder, I have to use contextual menus to mark the message read, as there is NO way to have it handled by evolution in a automatic method. For example, please look at the screenshot I have attached. You'll see my folder for mail from the Laptop Testing Team mailing list at ubuntu.com. I recently purged that folder of all old messages. Then I recieved a new message from that list which was filtered into the folder for Laptop Testing Team. When I open that folder, the message is opened, however, it is NOT marked as read. Since there is nothing else in that folder, I can't use the workaround of clicking on a different message then clicking back on that message. Thus, the only way to mark the folder as read is to now use context menus on the folder itself. [Bug 637636] [NEW] Evolution asks if I want to mark as read current folder or current and all subfolders, even when there are no sub-folders
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution In previous versions of Evolution (e.g. in Lucid) when I'd mark an IMAP folder as all read by right-clicking on the folder and selecting Mark as Read, all that would happen is that the folder would be marked as read. In the new version in Maverick, that behaviour has been replaced by an unnecessary popup that asks me: Also mark messages in subfolders? Do you want to mark the messages as read in the current folder only, or in the current folder as well as all subfolders? The problem is that the folders I'm attempting to mark as read do not have any subfolders. My IMAP folder tree looks like this: Inbox Folder A Folder B Folder C Folder D and when I try to, for example, mark Folder D as All Read, I get this popup, even though there is no subfolder under Folder D. [Bug 594960] [NEW] Evolution hangs while filtering inboxes w/ IMAP setup
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution Unfortunately, I don't have much more at this moment than an expansion of the summary. Frequently, daily, actually, Evolution will hang while accessing IMAP mailboxes and the status message usually hangs at: 0% Filtering New Messages It'll sit that way for hours if I allow it to (I let it sit overnight once just to see), and if I try to exit (via the X window button) the window dims and still hangs forever. I usually have to pkill -9 evolution to get rid of it and start over. This behaviour ALSO seems to occur sometimes when it's trying to access an IMAP contact list as well (I have it configured to use Canonical's IMAP directory for e-mail completion.) So the common theme is IMAP usage. I currently have it configured to use two IMAP mail servers, one for work and one that is privately hosted by me in a remote datacenter. [Bug 588423] [NEW] [Maverick A1]After opening multiple windows, the title bar for all windows disappears and wonkiness ensues
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: metacity This seems to occur only after opening multiple windows. Steps: 1: log in to Maverick A1 2: open terminal 3: open example-content folder via nautilus 4: note both windows have title bars and can be focused and moved around. 5: double click on something (I tried an odt doc that opened OO.org) 6: the title bars all disappear 7: windows can no longer be raised on click, even if they get focus 8: desktop becomes unusable, can't switch to other desktops, etc. This only seems to occur, as I mentioned, after opening multiple windows.
