[Bug 1767185] [NEW] Must click logout twice to log out.

2018-04-26 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Upgraded from Xenial to Bionic. Now, when I select Logout from the menu
(on both Unity and Gnome) I must do so twice before the logout is
initiated.

Steps:
click the menu in the upper right corner
click the Logout option
Menu closes
Click the menu again
Click the logout option again
Logout dialog appears

Expected steps: Same as above, without having to repeat myself.

Note I tried this in both Unity and Gnome3 and the results are the same
in both.

[Bug 1766890] Re: package gnome-menus 3.13.3-6ubuntu3.1 failed to install/upgrade: triggers looping, abandoned

2018-04-26 Thread Jeff Lane
@seb, per discussion via IRC, here are my logs from /var/log/dist-
upgrade (upgrade started last night and finally wrapped up this morning
after a lot of coffee and swearing).

To answer the questions:

I started off with 'do-release-upgrade -d' last night and ended up this
morning with a reboot into rescue mode and a lot of 'apt-get -f
install', 'dpkg --reconfigure -a' and finally an 'apt-get dist-upgrade'
(or was it a -f install again?) to get the remaining held 2400+ packages
updated.

NOW I believe I'm finally updated to Bionic and running again.

Also, will asked if I had manually modified anything in
/etc/apt/sources.list and the answer is no, all that was handled by the
upgrader.

FWIW, it's entirely possible I had other issues that just also included
this one, or just exposed this one where I may not have seen it
otherwise. This just happened to be the only one that Apport was able
to create and submit.

[Bug 1766890] Re: package gnome-menus 3.13.3-6ubuntu3.1 failed to install/upgrade: triggers looping, abandoned

2018-04-26 Thread Jeff Lane
FWIW, this error (my bug was marked a duplicate) completely broke my
Xenial - Bionic upgrade, leaving me with a nearly unbeatable system. I
had to boot into Rescue Mode and do a lot of ctrl-C ing to get around
this, and once I thought it had finally installed all the bionic
packages, I rebooted into the OS proper, and STILL found it hadn't
actually upgraded so I had to run 'apt-get -f install' again to finish
the other 2400+ package updates.

I spent most of my morning just trying to get back to a bootable system
that was only half-way upgraded (lsb-release told me I was in 18.04,
name -a said I was still on 4.13 from 16.04.4, and apt said I still had
2400+ packages to update).

If I was not an experienced user who knew roughly how to manually kick
this stuff to get around broken package updates, I'd have been
considerably more upset than I already am.

[Bug 1687647] [NEW] udev version 232-21ubuntu3 from ports is broken on Zesty s390x

2017-05-02 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

I'm attempting to install some cert tools on a z/KVM instance of Zesty.
This is failing because udev exits with an error during installation.
The apt logs show this:

Setting up udev (232-21ubuntu3) ...

cat: '/sys/class/net/eth*/address': No such file or directory
dpkg: error processing package udev (--configure):

and because of that, all other packages up the dependency chain fail to
install.

Interestingly, this is resolved by installing the older version of udev
and libudev1

[Bug 1548933] Re: It only shows installed apps, not available ones

Fair enough. we can count it as "weirdness when running an alpha" :)
it's working so I've reset the status to Fix Released now that I
understand the underlying mechanics a bit better. Of course, now I'm
also seeing the other issue that flocculant mentioned, but as discussed
in earlier comments, that's a different bug.

[Bug 1548933] Re: It only shows installed apps, not available ones

2016-03-01 Thread Jeff Lane
Hrmmm... appstream-util was not installed (why is that not installed by
default, or perhaps it is now but wasn't when I installed Xenial
originally a couple weeks ago).

Since appstream-util was never installed in the first place, the first
thing I did was simply run update-manager to update the cache (isn't
that the same action as apt-get update?)

That seems to have fixed it... so, are the apt-cache and whatever
update-manager is using not the same cache? (I don't tend to use GUI
tools, this is Linux, I use CLI stuff and have been using apt for years
to maintain and install packages).

I also manage this system with landscape, so how does that tie into
this? am I now going to need to remember to run update manager before
trying to use gnome-software even though the system is kept up to date
daily via Landscape?

That makes two things from Universe that "should" be there but are not.
As far as I can tell, the current gnome-software is still only showing
me the things that are already installed, it does NOT show anything that
"could be" installed.

[Bug 1544747] [NEW] No udev persistent rules in Xenial = strange device names for NICs

2016-02-11 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Fresh install of Xenial on an intel NUC with 1 onboard GigE and one USB
GigE NIC.

I was setting up networking for MAAS and discovered that the device
names were ridiculous:

bladernr@critical-maas:/etc/udev$ ifconfig |grep HWaddr
eno1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr ec:a8:6b:fb:9f:66
enx8cae4cff4099 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 8c:ae:4c:ff:40:99

In the previous Trusty install on this NUC with the same USB dongle,
they were named eth0 and em1. The predictable standard device names.

Looking at udevadm:

And finally, looking in /etc/udev:

/etc/udev/udev.conf

/etc/udev/rules.d:
.. .

/etc/udev/hwdb.d:

There are NO rules at all in udev for persistent names. Not even some
samples and defaults.

Looking at a completely different Xenial system with a single GigE NIC:

/etc/udev/rules.d:

[Bug 554471] Re: I can't remove a bluetooth device with bluetooth-properties

2013-02-25 Thread Jeff Lane
Why is this two years old, and more importantly, why is there no obvious
way to remove bluetooth devices once they're paired? Nor any easy way to
re-enter the PIN if you messed it up the first time?

This still affects gnome-bluetooth (bluetooth-applet specifically) in
Precise and Quantal, and I presume Raring since this has existed since
Lucid.

Yikes... sorry... it is NOT an upgrade.

This is actually a fresh new install of Precise on a machine that was
previously running Oneiric... I had planned to just upgrade, but decided
I wanted to re-do the partitioning schema I used originially (The
machine had been upgraded in place all the way from Karmic to Oneiric).

So this was on a fresh, brand new install of Precise from the daily ISO
as of last wednesday.

[Bug 401823] Re: Gdk-WARNING **: XID collision, trouble ahead

2012-02-16 Thread Jeff Lane
dormant and still broken are two different things...

bladernr@klaatu:~$ grep XID .xsession-errors |wc -l
139

That's 139 instances in .xsession errors in the last 24 hours for me...

Not to mention the fact that SO MANY things are reporting errors into
xsession-errors these days (for me at least) that I have to delete the
log every few days as it very quickly grows to over 100GB in size... I
think the last time I caught it, it went from 0 to 95GB in about a week
:(

I need to remember to start parsing that long and opening more bugs

[Bug 876658] [NEW] [Thinkpad T510] Brasero fails to find blank CD or DVD media on this system's DVD-RAM drive

2011-10-17 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Typically, during testing, I use Brasero to burn a pre-made 10MB ISO to
disk to test a drive's writing ability. However, with theDVD-RAM drive
( HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT30N ) on this machine, Brasero does not find any
blank media. I tried several CD-R and DVD-R disks but Brasero failed to
find any of them.

Ubuntu Itself recognized each one, and I finally tested the drive by
using Ubuntu's native disk writing (drag file to the disk and click Burn
in the file browser) to test the drive's writing functionality. I've
used Brasero on several other systems with Oneiric without issue... this
is the first time it's failed to work properly.

[Bug 852131] [NEW] [Thinkpad x201] File browse does not launch when media cards are inserted

2011-09-16 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Doing some exploratory testing on Oneiric with the latest daily ISO and
updates for 16 Sept 2011.

During testing with checkbox, I tested the MMC reader by inserting
various cards. The cards (SD and SDHC) were recognized and mounted by
the kernel, but in each case, the file browser did not launch. No icon
for drive appears on the launcher. In fact, Unity gives no indication
at all that the card was even recognized. I had to check dmesg and
mount to make sure the cards were actually mounted and visible.

Expected outcome: when SD cards are inserted and mounted, the file
broswer should open displaying the contents, or at the very least, a
launcher should appear on the dock providing obvious access to that card
(along with some sort of notification to the user that the card is ready
to use).

[Bug 792636] Re: Power section no longer allows configuration of when the lid is closed action in Oneiric

2011-09-06 Thread Jeff Lane
Why should a user have to install gnome-tweak (assuming they knew what
gnome-tweak was to begin with)?

This was easily configurable previously, someone just decided that users
wouldn't want to actually prevent their system from suspending when the
lid is closed.

But expecting the majority of users to start editing config files
manually, or intuiting that there's something called gnome-tweak that
will allow them to actually configure the power settings on their system
isn't a proper solution for an OS geared towards the masses.

To be honest, I'm NOT a typical user, and this is really the first time
I've ever heard of gnome-tweak myself.

Is there any benefit to NOT allowing users to configure this behaviour
in the system configuration tools that ship with Ubuntu?

[Bug 792636] Re: Power section no longer allows configuration of when the lid is closed action in Oneiric

2011-09-06 Thread Jeff Lane
Dave: No worries :) I actually appreciate your workaround, and learning
about gnome-tweak, something I've never needed before. Like I said, it
is fine for you and I, but not Mom and Dad (for most samples of Mom and
Dad). I am just more frustrated that, as Tom points out, this seems to
be a philosophical change, rather than one of any technical merit.

And I'm firmly on the other side of the debate here, as I am strongly
against too much dumbing down of Linux. Make it easier to use for the
average person, sure, but don't make it brain-dead. One of the BIGGEST
draws to Linux aside from stability is that you can configure SO MUCH so
easily, and limiting this, IMHO, takes away from Linux instead of adding
any real value.

[Bug 792636] Re: Power section no longer allows configuration of when the lid is closed action in Oneiric

2011-09-06 Thread Jeff Lane
Tom: Thanks for the link... that's an interesting read, and
unfortunately, they lost me completely at the statement :The other
reason not to include this setting is, of course, that it is another
setting and, as we all know, settings kill kittens.

This is NOT Another setting, it's an existing setting. It did not
ADD to the pool of existing settings, it was already there to begin
with.

And from reading the comments I can see that I am not in the minority in
having issue with removing this functionality.

[Bug 825379] [NEW] brasero no longer appears in the app lens after updating alpha 3

2011-08-12 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

At some point, and update has removed brasero from the app lens. I'm
doing testing using Alpha 3 with all the latest updates as of this
morning (12 Aug). On other systems I tested earlier this week, Brasero
was easy to find by searching for brasero or even cd or dvd in the
application lens. Today, however, nothing I can thing of to search for
returns a launcher for Brasero.

I can still run the program from a terminal, so it's there, and works
(I've successfully burned CD and DVDs on two other test systems today)
but it's just not launchable anymore from the app lens.

If I just insert a blank disk into the drive, the CD/DVD Creator
launches, but that provides no way that I can tell to burn an existing
ISO image to disk, it only give the option to drag/drop files onto the
disk and burn them afterwards.

power) now provides no means to change behaviour on lid action.

In Natty and before, I could select the behaviour for lid close, now
that ability is missing.

[Bug 788381] [NEW] Power Indicator says battery is empty when it's full

2011-05-25 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

the power indicator in Natty on my Thinkpad x201 says the battery is
empty, even though it's full.

Basically, when I plug the Thinkpad in, the indicator correctly displays
the battery/lightning bolt indicating that the battery is charging.
When I unplug the power brick, the battery indicator shows the red
battery outline indicating an empty battery. The indicator messages say
Remaining Time Unknown, but if I click on the icon it says I have over 3
hours of battery life left.

This did not happen after I initially upgraded to Natty from Maverick,
but seems to have happened after a previous Natty update.

[Bug 774203] [NEW] Brasero makes coasters when using the Burn Directly To Disk option

2011-04-30 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

If I try creating a CD by adding files in Brasero then buring directly
to disk (using defaults all the way through) brasero creates coasters
every time.

If I add files, then build an ISO, then burn the ISO instead, Brasero
seems to work fine.

but so far, I've tried 5 times on three different machines and each
time, Brasero made a nice plastic coaster instead of a usable CD or DVD.

When I use an ISO image instead, Brasero successfully burns a useful
disk

Sebastien,

That's fine... but the bug you marked me a duplicate of has been open
since 2006 and Dapper. if Gnome refuses to fix it, then we should, it's
a moderate physical security risk, a super big annoyance, and it's now 5
years old. This should have been resolved by someone years ago.

Don't take that as personal criticism, it's just that things like this
really get to me...

[Bug 772747] [NEW] gnome-keyring unlock prompt prevents screensaver from running until after unlock is closed out

2011-04-28 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-keyring

noticed this on a test system with a fresh Natty install. System boots
and is set to auto-login. once logged in, the gnome-keyring popup opens
asking for my password to unlock the keyring. I walk away and come back
later. I enter the password to unlock the keyring. a second or so
after that, the screensaver or blanker finally fires, and I have to
enter my PW AGAIN to get back into the system.

As long as that keyring prompt is visible, the system does not lock the
screen after it's idle timeout period.

[Bug 771824] [NEW] pointer speed/acceleration should be device specific, not generic

2011-04-27 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Different types of pointing devices behave differently, and so settings
like acceleration and movement speed should be set by device rather than
generically tied to pointer.

For example, I'm using a ThinkPad x201. This has the IBM trackpoint
(the red joystick nub in the keyboard), a touchpad and I am using a
bluetooth Apple Magic Mouse.

When I'm not using the bluetooth mouse, I typically use a combination of
the pointer and the touchpad (for example, when working on a plane, or
in a restaurant). These devices typically need a faster acceleration
set to make pointer movements more efficient. So I set the acceleration
higher to account for the much smaller surface area of the touchpad and
the limited movement of the trackpoint.

BUT, as soon as I connect my Magic Mouse, it takes on the same
acceleration settings as I had set for the other devices, and becomes
all but unusable because it's far faster by default when moving the
pointer.

So, the means that I, the user, must set the mouse properties manually
every time I use one or the other. So when I don't have my bluetooth
mouse connected, I have to set the acceleration up to compensate for the
slow trackpoint/touchpad devices. when I do connect the mouse, I have
to manually slow down the acceleration to make the mouse behave
properly.

Expected results:
I should be able to set a profile for each pointing device with settings set
accordingly. So I can set one set of parameters for the built-in devices and
one set for my bluetooth mouse, and perhaps a third profile for a different USB
mouse.

Or at the very least, generic parameters set for decice TYPE. So built-
in devices get one profile and config while external devices get
another.

[Bug 710441] [NEW] widgets in gnome-panel move about after reboots.

2011-01-30 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Please see attached screenshots to really get what's going on.

The issue is that widgets in the gnome-panel don't seem to enjoy staying
where I place them. See screenshot one. That was the state of the
panel after several reboots.

Now see screenshot number 2. That's where I had placed them originally,
and screenshot 2 shows where I've placed them again.

Now see screenshot number 3. That's after one reboot. Notice that
they've started migrating away from each other again.

And that's not the worst. While I don't have a screenshot to post,
unfortunately, I've rebooted and found them in completely random order
before... for example, the Me Menu would be way to the left of
everything else, while ONE or TWO of the processor monitors would be at
the far right where the Power button is supposed to be.

I don't quite understand WHY they insist on moving around. I understand
the need to explore new territory, but for now, I'd like them to all
stay at home where I placed them.

[Bug 675731] [NEW] Evolution crashes (but leaves no core dump and does not trigger apport) randomly

2010-11-15 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Another bit of Evolution fun...

I've noticed that since upgrading to 10.10, Evolution crashes randomly.
Some times it's opening a folder, sometimes when clicking on Send on a
new message, sometimes when marking a message as read.

In the latter example, I saw today, Evolution would crash EVERY time I
clicked the Read/Unread icon next to a message in one of my folders.

I finally thought I'd try running strace and seeing if I could capture
the system calls made at the time of the crash, however, when run
through systrace, the crash did NOT occur, even though without strace,
the crash occurred 5 out of 5 times when attempting to mark that message
unread.

So at a first guess, I am thinking that maybe there's some sort of race
condition going on that strace is mitigating.

I also attempted this before when evolution kept crashing while clicking
Send on new messages (still does this too) and so I ran evolution for
several hours through strace and never managed to get a crash. I DID,
however, end up with a 40GB log file from strace :(

I will look at running evolution through valgrind too and see if I can
catch anything, but I'm not hopeful that this will be any different than
when running via strace.

[Bug 672733] [NEW] Automatic Mark as Read fails if the first message presented on folder opening is new.

2010-11-08 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

This may be a bit difficult to explain...

In Evolution, I currently have it configured to mark a new message as
read 0.5 seconds after I open the message. So, for example, I open my
inbox folder and there are 50 messages total and 5 marked Unread. I
click on one of the 5 Unread messages and open it. Evolution then marks
that message as read about 0.5 seconds after I open the message and
start reading it.

When I open a folder, evolution opens up a message automatically. IN
some cases, this is the last message read, in some cases, it's the first
unread message. The bug exists when the second case is met. When I
open a folder and evolution automatically opens an Unread message, that
unread message is NOT automatically marked read. Instead, I have to
open a different message and then return to that message to have it
marked Read.

This becomes an even bigger issue when I open a folder that contains
exactly ONE message. if I purge the contents of a folder, then get a
new message in that folder, I have to use contextual menus to mark the
message read, as there is NO way to have it handled by evolution in a
automatic method.

For example, please look at the screenshot I have attached.

You'll see my folder for mail from the Laptop Testing Team mailing list
at ubuntu.com. I recently purged that folder of all old messages. Then
I recieved a new message from that list which was filtered into the
folder for Laptop Testing Team.

When I open that folder, the message is opened, however, it is NOT
marked as read. Since there is nothing else in that folder, I can't use
the workaround of clicking on a different message then clicking back on
that message. Thus, the only way to mark the folder as read is to now
use context menus on the folder itself.

[Bug 656336] [NEW] Clicking the X to close a message window also closes the main Evolution window

2010-10-07 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Found this by accident. When you close a secondary message window
(opened by double clicking an e-mail in the e-mail list for a given
account), not only does that message window close, but the Evolution
itself closes as well.

In the attached screen shot, you'll see the Evolution window as well as
the smaller message window that was opened when I double clicked on one
of the messages in that folder.

Now, when I click the window control to close that window (the X in the
corner), not only will that window close, but it'll close down Evolution
as well.

[Bug 637636] [NEW] Evolution asks if I want to mark as read current folder or current and all subfolders, even when there are no sub-folders

2010-09-13 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

In previous versions of Evolution (e.g. in Lucid) when I'd mark an IMAP
folder as all read by right-clicking on the folder and selecting Mark as
Read, all that would happen is that the folder would be marked as read.

In the new version in Maverick, that behaviour has been replaced by an
unnecessary popup that asks me:

Also mark messages in subfolders?
Do you want to mark the messages as read in the current folder only, or in the
current folder as well as all subfolders?

The problem is that the folders I'm attempting to mark as read do not
have any subfolders.

My IMAP folder tree looks like this:

Inbox
Folder A
Folder B
Folder C
Folder D

and when I try to, for example, mark Folder D as All Read, I get this
popup, even though there is no subfolder under Folder D.

This is new as of Maverick, and is QUITE annoying and makes for an even
worse user experience than one normally gets with Evolution :(

[Bug 594960] [NEW] Evolution hangs while filtering inboxes w/ IMAP setup

2010-06-16 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Unfortunately, I don't have much more at this moment than an expansion
of the summary.

Frequently, daily, actually, Evolution will hang while accessing IMAP
mailboxes and the status message usually hangs at:

0% Filtering New Messages

It'll sit that way for hours if I allow it to (I let it sit overnight
once just to see), and if I try to exit (via the X window button) the
window dims and still hangs forever. I usually have to pkill -9
evolution to get rid of it and start over.

This behaviour ALSO seems to occur sometimes when it's trying to access
an IMAP contact list as well (I have it configured to use Canonical's
IMAP directory for e-mail completion.)

So the common theme is IMAP usage.

I currently have it configured to use two IMAP mail servers, one for
work and one that is privately hosted by me in a remote datacenter.

[Bug 588423] [NEW] [Maverick A1]After opening multiple windows, the title bar for all windows disappears and wonkiness ensues

This seems to occur only after opening multiple windows.

Steps:

5: double click on something (I tried an odt doc that opened OO.org)
6: the title bars all disappear
