[Bug 184323] Re: nautilus gives wrong message for locked file

2008-03-25 Thread Joachim Noreiko
I don't follow your logic.
Just double-clicking to open the file in Nautilus should produce the right
error message.
In other words, You don't have the rights to read this should take
*precedence* over The system doesn't know what to use to open this file.

Please reopen.

That's a special case.

Think like a user for a second.
Here's the chain of events:

- try to figure out what to open it with
- try an application
- get a You don't have the rights to read this error

[Bug 184323] Re: nautilus gives wrong message for locked file

2008-03-25 Thread Joachim Noreiko
I don't know what you mean by 'what I'm going to try'.
Of course you can do *anything* with sudo/gksu. That doesn't take away from the
fact that with normal user permissions, you can't open the file. Sudo/gksu is
in a sense a meta-application, outside of normal GUI conventions. (If you're
going to include it in the conversation, then there's another bug in that
Nautilus should have an authenticate dialog to open locked files it DOES know
how to handle.)
And opening from Nautilus means just open this file with the most sensible
thing.

But hey. If you want to count angels on the head of a pin and rather
than fix a usability problem...

[Bug 184302] Disk Usage label is confusing

2008-01-19 Thread Joachim Noreiko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: serpentine

The label 'Disk Usage' doesn't show disk usage, it shows remaining space.
In other words, the label tells me the numbers will tell me how much of the
disk I'm taking up, but the numbers show the opposite amount, ie the space
that's still free.
This is confusing.

It should either be:

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 36151 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/36151

I don't think this bug is a duplicate of Bug #36151

Bug #36151 asks for a second click on Trash to close the window.

Here I say that a second click should either do nothing or bring the
trash window to focus.

Sebastian says on that bug:
It acts the same way as any directory put on the panel by drag and drop. Your
behaviour would mean programming a trash application rather than opening the
nautilus view on the folder.

In which case, the bug is perhaps that clicking on ANY folder on the
panel shouldn't open a second folder view, but bring it to focus.

[Bug 137134] Re: firefox windows that touch opposite edges of the screen can't be moved

2007-09-29 Thread Joachim Noreiko
Ok... had more of a play around with this. I can reproduce with both
Epiphany and Gedit.

To reproduce with gedit:
1. Launch gedit.
2. Size the window so it's full height but not full width.
3. quite gedit
4. relaunch gedit. It should have remembered the last window size.
5. try to change the height. You can't.

This also happens with window that is full width and partial height.

The workaround is to maximise and then restore.

[Bug 113266] metacity doesn't launch

2007-05-08 Thread Joachim Noreiko
Public bug reported:

When I start my computer up, there are no borders on the windows. I
can't move any windows, I don't have workspaces. Firefox has covered up
the applications menu, and my computer is effectively unusable.

2007-04-02 Thread Joachim Noreiko
Ok.
I have my ~/Pictures folder open. It contains about 6 images, and a subfolder
Backgrounds which contains two images.
I hit CTRL-F from this folder, and type a word that I can see is contained in
one of the image filenames.

After 5 minutes I got results, but these are from ALL of my home folder,
not the current folder.

In my home folder, or in total?
Where does the search begin looking?
Shouldn't it produce some sort of result as soon as it finds something?

Windows 2000, searching the same hard drive (minus the ext2/3
partitions, but still most of it), starts to produce results after about
20 seconds.

[Bug 96483] nautilus search is horribly slow

2007-03-26 Thread Joachim Noreiko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I've started a search for 'jpg' in my home folder.
The same search with the 'search for files' tool came up with results pretty
quickly.
It's now been about 5 minutes, and there is still hard disk activity and a busy
mouse pointer in the window, but no results.
On the offchance this was due to the file extension not being searched, I've
also tried words I know are used in the names of some of my files.

After 15 minutes I still had no results.
There is really a problem here -- searching a hard drive shouldn't be that

[Bug 95059] totem tries to play RealPlayer audio but produces only errors

2007-03-23 Thread Joachim Noreiko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Go here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/progs/listenagain.shtml
Follow a listen link.
A browser window pops up, followed by an error dialog about Totem. Huh? I
didn't even know I was running Totem, says confused user.
Nothing else happens, no sound plays. The browser pop-up shows audio controls,
which is misleading: on systems where the browser plugins aren't installed, the
browser shows a message instead of the controls.

Next, try 'Listen using stand-alone Real Player'
Totem launches, and gives an error.

If Totem cannot handle this type of audio, it should not try.

CSS files that start with a comment produce an error dialog in Nautilus:

The filename common.css indicates that this file is of type CSS
stylesheet. The contents of the file indicate that the file is of type

security risk to your system.

[Bug 72304] Deleted items folder name doesn't make sense

2006-11-18 Thread Joachim Noreiko
Public bug reported:

This used to be called the Trash or Wastebasket.
Now it's Deleted items folder.

This causes inconsistencies with the trash metaphor.
For example, the context menu for an item in Trash says Delete from Deleted
items folder. Huh? It's already deleted, as it's a 'deleted item'!

The whole purpose of the trash metaphor is to create a distinction
between putting something in the trash, where you can get it back, and
deleting, which is killing something for good.

[Bug 50860] Re: partitions are shown in Computer folder, but are useless

2006-08-18 Thread Joachim Noreiko
Having fixed my fstab so the mounts are correct and uncommented, eg

/dev/sda7 /media/sda7 vfatdefaults0 0

I now get this message:
mount: only root can mount /dev/sda7 on /media/sda7

If I mount sda7 myself with the terminal, double-clicking the corresponding
icon in Computer produces nothing at all.

[Bug 50017] Re: yelp search doesn't do anything

2006-06-27 Thread Joachim Noreiko
Beagle isn't installed by default as far as I know.
Yelp search should still do something useful without beagle.

Search has now been running for 6 minutes (on an Athlon 3000+, 1Gb RAM)
with still no results.

[Bug 50860] partitions are shown in Computer folder, but are useless

2006-06-24 Thread Joachim Noreiko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

In the Computer place in Nautilus, I see all the partitions of my hard drives.
But double-clicking one produces this error message:

Unable to mount the selected volume.
error: device /dev/hda1 is not removable

error: could not execute pmount

What is the point in showing these if nothing can be done with them?

[Bug 41944] Re: Failure to connect to a server results in a useless window and icon

2006-05-08 Thread Joachim Noreiko
I'm still not entirely sure why someone would want to add a location when they
have had no confirmation that it's correct. Even admins make typos!

I suggest the following:

{...} is not a valid location. You may have made an error typing the address,
or the remote computer may not currently be available.

[ ] Add this location anyway.

[OK]

The checkbox for adding the location would be off by default, but the dialog
should remember its state.
This should satisfy admins who add locations blind ;) and klutzes like me who
just make mistakes.

But the dialog clearly says 'not valid'.
If this is by design, at least match up the meaning of the dialog and the
result!
Or provide two buttons in the dialog, an OK and a Mount it anyway.

[Bug 41944] Re: Failure to connect to a server results in a useless window and icon

2006-05-05 Thread Joachim Noreiko
I don't know about you, but trying to connect up to a share is always a long
and tedious process. I would end up with about a dozen icons on my desktop
before I got anywhere, either because one system isn't set up properly or
because I get the exact address wrong. (For example, I have never managed to
get OS X to connect to an Ubuntu share, possibly because I have not properly
understood how to set Ubuntu up to allow this.)

It doesn't say 'not connected', it says 'not valid'.
My point is quite simply that creating an icon for something that's not valid
is crazy.

It's like adding a wrong number to your address book!
I'm not saying there isn't a use case for doing this, but it shouldn't be the
default, and the behaviour is inconsistent with the messages. Can you not SEE
this?

[Bug 41944] Failure to connect to a server results in a useless window and icon

2006-05-04 Thread Joachim Noreiko
Public bug reported:

Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
To reproduce:

Choose 'connect to server' from the Places menu
Choose Windows share and make up an IP address so it'll fail

A window opens, and an SMB icon appears on the desktop. There is a
dialog box saying 'Some of the contents could not be shown'.

the window is pointless
the icon is pointless, and can't be deleted
the dialog box message is misleading: ALL contents could not be shown, and in
fact the server could not be contacted at all, because it does not exist.

[Bug 41931] Re: Copying files from OS X causes errors with icon files

2006-05-03 Thread Joachim Noreiko
I am using Ubuntu 5.10.
The filesystem I am trying to copy to is FAT32. The filesystem on the SMB share
is OS X's filesystem.

I can confirm that the file that causes the problem is a hidden file on OS X --
trying to copy just this file reproduces the error.
In the OS X terminal, ls -a causes it to show as Icon?. Autocomplete on the
OS X terminal produces Icon^M.
Copying it from the SMB share to my desktop on Ubuntu (ext3 filesystem) works,
and produces a (non-hidden) file. This has the same name in the gnome terminal
as on OS X, and on the desktop is called Icon\n (where \n is a newline
character).
