[Bug 184323] Re: nautilus gives wrong message for locked file
I don't know what you mean by 'what I'm going to try'. Of course you can do *anything* with sudo/gksu. That doesn't take away from the fact that with normal user permissions, you can't open the file. Sudo/gksu is in a sense a meta-application, outside of normal GUI conventions. (If you're going to include it in the conversation, then there's another bug in that Nautilus should have an authenticate dialog to open locked files it DOES know how to handle.) And opening from Nautilus means just open this file with the most sensible thing. But hey. [Bug 41944] Re: Failure to connect to a server results in a useless window and icon
I'm still not entirely sure why someone would want to add a location when they have had no confirmation that it's correct. Even admins make typos! I suggest the following: {...} is not a valid location. You may have made an error typing the address, or the remote computer may not currently be available. [ ] Add this location anyway. [OK] The checkbox for adding the location would be off by default, but the dialog should remember its state. This should satisfy admins who add locations blind ;) and klutzes like me who just make mistakes. -- Failure to connect to a server results in a useless window and icon https://launchpad.net/bugs/41944 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 41944] Re: Failure to connect to a server results in a useless window and icon
Then you are still seeing at least part of this bug. The icon on the desktop should not be created -- what is the point? [Bug 41944] Re: Failure to connect to a server results in a useless window and icon
But the dialog clearly says 'not valid'. If this is by design, at least match up the meaning of the dialog and the result! Or provide two buttons in the dialog, an OK and a Mount it anyway.
I don't know about you, but trying to connect up to a share is always a long and tedious process. I would end up with about a dozen icons on my desktop before I got anywhere, either because one system isn't set up properly or because I get the exact address wrong. (For example, I have never managed to get OS X to connect to an Ubuntu share, possibly because I have not properly understood how to set Ubuntu up to allow this.) It doesn't say 'not connected', it says 'not valid'. My point is quite simply that creating an icon for something that's not valid is crazy.
It's like adding a wrong number to your address book! I'm not saying there isn't a use case for doing this, but it shouldn't be the default, and the behaviour is inconsistent with the messages. [Bug 41944] Failure to connect to a server results in a useless window and icon
Public bug reported: Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed Description: To reproduce: Choose 'connect to server' from the Places menu Choose Windows share and make up an IP address so it'll fail A window opens, and an SMB icon appears on the desktop. There is a dialog box saying 'Some of the contents could not be shown'. the window is pointless the icon is pointless, and can't be deleted the dialog box message is misleading: ALL contents could not be shown, and in fact the server could not be contacted at all, because it does not exist. -- Failure to connect to a server results in a useless window and icon https://launchpad.net/bugs/41944 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 41931] Re: Copying files from OS X causes errors with icon files
I am using Ubuntu 5.10. The filesystem I am trying to copy to is FAT32. The filesystem on the SMB share is OS X's filesystem. I can confirm that the file that causes the problem is a hidden file on OS X -- trying to copy just this file reproduces the error. In the OS X terminal, ls -a causes it to show as Icon?. Autocomplete on the OS X terminal produces Icon^M. Copying it from the SMB share to my desktop on Ubuntu (ext3 filesystem) works, and produces a (non-hidden) file. This has the same name in the gnome terminal as on OS X, and on the desktop is called Icon\n (where \n is a newline character). -- Copying files from OS X causes errors with icon files https://launchpad.net/bugs/41931 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
