[Bug 2083299] [NEW] Ubuntu 24.04: Occasionally screen stays black while booting

2024-09-30 Thread John Doe
Public bug reported:

Unfortunately the screen stays black before password prompt shows up.
This happens since I've migrated from 22.04 to 24.04.
Even a fresh install shows the same symptoms.

What helps is to detach the HDMI cable, attach it again and the TV shows
the password prompt for luks.

I did not try yet the removal of "splash" in the parameters. As this was
indicated by others who faced the same issue.

[Bug 2026307] Re: ssh-askpass-gnome pops up for every sudo command

2023-07-07 Thread john doe
i didn't see your comment and i just changed the project to gnome-shell
instead of openssh b/c it does the exact same thing when using seahorse
as ssh-askpass provider instead of ssh-askpass-gnome. But i guess
seahorse needs a desktop file too. :) thanks for the info and the
workaround. will change back to openssh.

So will ubuntu get updates that add a desktop file for this package
then? Should i open another issue for seahorse?

[Bug 1958733] [NEW] Settings menu will not open. Other things seem messed up.

2022-01-22 Thread John Doe
Public bug reported:

I installed DWM and was learning how to use the shortcuts. I was mashing
keys because I had no idea what the shorcuts were and I am a newb. When
I rebooted into DWM, it said it couldn't open firefox because of an IBUS
warning. When I rebooted again and went into the normal Ubuntu window
manager everthing worked fine. When I went to click on settings, the
settings menu would not open. I tried to open settings by using the
following command "gnome-control-center display" which did not work.

Should I just reinstall everything?

[Bug 353356] Re: Gnome screensaver lock always reports "incorrect password"

2017-01-10 Thread John Doe
Observing same issue on Ubuntu 16.04 (after upgrading from 14.04 where
same problem was appearing).

I consider that this effect is also there if you lock the screen manually.
Same workaround works:

- (lock screen manually; re-login says "wrong password"
- try to login as another user with wrong password
- after error, switch back to your user
- now login works

Yes it's specific for the first user which was created during the installation.
Tried it with a new account and it does not show up.
I tried to turn it off twice. First the usual way with ctrl+h and then with the
menue (down arrow) "show hidden files" and unchecked it. When I close and
restart nautilus hidden files are visibile again. Of course the entry in the
menue is also checked again.

[Bug 868358] Re: Hibernate hotkey (fn + ...) triggers suspend to ram

2012-11-22 Thread John Doe
I noticed that pressing Fn+F4 (suspend) actually triggers hibernate,
while Fn+F12 triggers suspend. I have set all power-keys to hibernate as
hinted in #22.

Keycode for Fn+F12 is:

~ $ sudo /lib/udev/keymap -i input/event4
Press ESC to finish, or Control-C if this device is not your primary keyboard
scan code: 0x0B key code: suspend

while Fn+F4 is:

scan code: 0x03 key code: sleep

2011-12-20 Thread John Doe
@ossjunkie: Didn't look at it before my previous comment as I hadn't

As well as creating an unpredictable location using mktemp also means
you don't need to worry about permissions since by default it creates
files/directories with read/write for owner only.

[Bug 435719] Re: gvfs-fuse fails to start on NFS mounted homes

2011-12-20 Thread John Doe
Timo's workaround is just what I was looking for. I wouldn't use
/tmp/.gvfs-$USER though since that's a predictable location. On a
machine where lots of people log in to it someone could maliciously pre-
create such directories for other users resulting in at best denial of
service and at worst them being able to access other people's files. I'd
use mktemp

rmdir ~/.gvfs 2>/dev/null || rm ~/.gvfs
ln -s "$(mktemp -d)" ~/.gvfs

2010-05-13 Thread John Doe
I just got the same issue with my upgraded box (from 9.10 to 10.04):
When pressing the volume keys on my Cherry Stream keyboard, CPU consumes
100% and I'm not able to input anything anymore. Mouse control works
however. If I switch over to tty1 and back to X with CTRL+ALT+F1 the
keyboard works again and CPU is back to normal.

On 9.10 this all worked without problems! Please advise for how to debug
this problem further. Thanks!

[Bug 95486] Gimp - "Select File Type" section in Save As dialog makes Save As dialog too large to fit screen.

2007-03-24 Thread John Doe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gimp

When saving files in Gimp 2.2.13 in an installed Ubuntu 7.04 "Feisty
Fawn" Beta setup at a configured 1024x768 screen resolution, expanding
the File - Save As dialog section labeled "Select File Type" makes the
Save As dialog be too tall and no longer fit the screen, making it
impossible to click the "Save" button on the dialog without having to
collapse the section.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Load Gimp..."Applications" menu, "Graphics", "GIMP Image Editor"

2. Create a new image ... "File" menu, "New...", then click the "OK"
button.

3. In the new image window, click the "File" menu, then "Save as".

4. Click on the "Select File Type (By Extension)" section to expand it.

This is where it stretches the window vertically and makes it too tall
to fit the screen.

5. Attempt to resize the window vertically using the top border of the
window and resizing fails and the window stays the same height.

6. Collapse the "Select File Type (By Extension)" section by clicking
on it.

Notice at this point that the Save As dialog does not return to a size
where you can see the "Save" button. One has to manually resize the
window vertically to see the Save button again.

When loading Rhythmbox 0.9.8 in Ubuntu 7.04 "Feisty Fawn" Beta (on the

is wider than can fit on the screen. Clicking the maximize button on

[Bug 85930] Display goes to sleep during boot-up of Feisty

2007-02-20 Thread John Doe
Public bug reported:

When I boot Feisty Herd 4's "Desktop" CD, in the middle of the gnome
login, my display goes to sleep. Wiggling my mouse when it goes to
sleep wakes the display back up just fine, though. When I go into the
"Control Center" under the "System" menu and look at the screensaver
preferences, it is set to "Regard the computer as idle after 10
minutes". Also, under "Power Management", the option to "Put display to
sleep when inactive" is set to 40 minutes. I am very sure that the boot
is under 3 minutes and shouldn't have been idle long enough to put the
thing into sleep mode.

[Bug 85932] Terminal font appears to be slightly fuzzy/blurry

2007-02-17 Thread John Doe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

I booted Ubuntu Feisty Herd 4's "Desktop" CD. When I click the
"Applications" menu and then under "Accessories" click "Terminal" and
basically do stuff on the shell (like run "top", for instance), fonts
appear to be a bit fuzzy in Gnome Terminal 2.17.91 on my 17 inch CRT

I just downloaded Ubuntu 6.06's i386 Daily Live CD 20060514 from
http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/daily-live/20060514/ and booted it (md5
verified). When it finishes booting and is at the Gnome desktop, I
opened the "SeeUbuntu.ogg" file in the "Examples" folder. Once opened
in Totem, it plays just fine, but when you try to seek by dragging the
seek bar to a different spot in the video, Totem freezes for 5 seconds
and uses 100% CPU during that freeze (according to the "System Monitor")
before it finally seeks to the new spot in the video and starts playing
it just fine.

The totem-gstreamer version on the Live CD is 1.4.0-0ubuntu6. The
"gstreamer0.10-plugins-base" version is 0.10.6-0ubuntu3

Description:
I am using the Ubuntu 6.06 Beta Live CD. On it, I went to "System",
then "Administration", then "Printing". I, then, double-clicked "New
Printer". On Step 1 of the "Add a printer" dialog ("Printer

detected printer" and selected my printer model which is a Canon S600.
Then, I clicked the "Forward" button. On Step 2 of the "Add a printer"
dialog ("Printer Driver"), I chose the manufacturer "Canon", model
"S600", driver "bj8pa06n.upp", and then I clicked the "Apply" button.
My printer never shows up in the "Printers" window, even after waiting
several minutes. I also, don't see any CPU activity under "System
Monitor" other than that used by the system monitor itself and of X.org.

am in or what message I select.

[Bug 38440] Re: [Dapper Flight-6] Evolution defaults to saving sent mail and drafts locally when an IMAP account is setup.

2006-04-06 Thread John Doe
I forgot to mention that this occurs in both Ubuntu 5.10 and in Ubuntu Dapper
Flight 6.

[Bug 38440] [Dapper Flight-6] Evolution defaults to saving sent mail and drafts locally when an IMAP account is setup.

2006-04-06 Thread John Doe
Public bug reported:

Affects: evolution (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
When I setup an IMAP account in Evolution, it defaults to saving any
email I send out and any email I save as a draft locally instead of on
the IMAP server. It would be nice if it defaulted to save outgoing
messages and drafts of an IMAP account on the IMAP server and not
locally.

[Bug 37545] Re: hitting a key while the "ants" screensaver is running terminates the X-session

2006-04-01 Thread John Doe
I was unable to reproduce this on a fresh install of Dapper Flight 6 with an
Nvidia GeForce MX 400 video card. I am using the "nv" driver and tested both
the "AntSpotlight" screensaver and the "AntInsect" screensaver with them set to
display after 1 minute of activity and hitting the spacebar while they were
active and saw no crash in X.

What type of video hardware do you have? Also, are you using any drivers that
you had to install/setup yourself like nvidia's driver?

2006-04-01 Thread John Doe
I confirmed this bug in Totem in Ubuntu Dapper Flight 6. I also opened the
.spx file in Rhythmbox and it too cannot seek .spx files and disables the seek
slider.

** Also affects: rhythmbox (Ubuntu)
 Severity: Normal
 Priority: (none set)
   Status: Unconfirmed

** Changed in: totem totem-gstreamer (Ubuntu)

[Bug 35733] Re: No Recording with Sound Recorder

2006-04-01 Thread John Doe
I also confirmed this bug in Ubuntu Dapper Flight 6. Clicking the Record
button does nothing, no matter what is set on "Record as" for the format and
with the Microphone unmuted and volume all the way up on the "Capture" tab of
the Volume Control.
