[Bug 1879137] Re: The snap-store is using hundreds of MiBs of RAM.

2022-09-24 Thread John Pye
I found that snap-store was consuming fully 1 GB of RAM on my system
when I checked it just now. Such a huge memory use for something I
*never* used. I would like to think that core elements of the a default
Ubuntu system would be designed more carefully for low memory use.

[Bug 1785444] [NEW] Can't enable menubar mnemonics for gnome-terminal in 18.04 under Unity

2018-08-04 Thread John Pye
Public bug reported:

On a clean Ubuntu 18.04, the Gnome Terminal menubar mnemonics are
disabled, which makes quick launching of terminals with different
profiles difficult.

There is still a setting for turning on/off mnemonics in dconf-editor:

dconf read /org/gnome/terminal/legacy/mnemonics-enabled

I have set this option to true, but nothing changes!

---

If I can hypothesise what the problem is here, I can see that terminal
does some clever stuff to create two different menu .ui files using XML
manipulation, eg

https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/tree/src/terminal-menubar.ui.in?h=ubuntu/bionic-updates
https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/tree/src/Makefile.am?h=ubuntu/bionic-updates

Hence there are TWO versions of the menu descriptions in Terminal.

I understand there were some tricks required to implement the Unity
menus on top of standard GTK applications, so perhaps this switching of
the menu descriptions causes problems the way Unity picks up the menu
information and exposes it.

Is there a solution for this? Is there a way to compile terminal
differently to get the with-mnemonic version instead of the without-
mnemonic version, if it's not possible for on-the-fly switching to be
enabled?

[Bug 1400470] Re: cannot download photos using shotwell via usb

According to https://git.gnome.org/browse/shotwell/tree/NEWS this issue
has recently been addressed by version 0.27.0. Ubuntu 17.04 system only
has version 0.22.0. So this is probably an Ubuntu packaging issue.

[Bug 1570227] Re: Open Recent Items show as always empty in Gedit

2016-07-30 Thread John Pye
Looks to me that the 'Recent files' menu item needs to be removed,
unless a way can be found to re-port the old behaviour into the Unity
menus again. No point having that entry with just 'Reopen closed tabs'
in it; it's misleading.

I don't like the Gnome "Open \/" menu so much as it doesn't work well at
all with the keyboard. If I type alt-O, then I can't type alt-D to open
the 'Other Documents' button, because Unity assumes I want the Document
menu in the main menu-bar. Also, there is no alt-O-1, alt-O-2
keybinding to quickly access past files -- you have to hit the arrow
keys until you highlight the file you want.

Are convenient key-bindings falling from favour somehow? Same problems
occurring all the time with LibreOffice these days too...

[Bug 1106472] [NEW] Evolution gets stuck on IMAP server PING

2013-01-26 Thread John Pye
Public bug reported:

This bug is reported in Evolution's bugzilla, but it present in Ubuntu
12.04. My particular IMAP server does not respond to the 'pings' that
Evolution reports making, possibly to keep alive a server connection (I
am not sure exactly what type of pings these are). Evolution sits there
waiting for the ping to complete, but since my server doesn't respond,
all of Evolution's actions are queued up behind this unresponsive event.
Makes use of Evolution very slow/frustrating. Evolution needs to provide
a way to shorten the timeout or disable this ping activity.

[Bug 1036673] [NEW] empathy-accounts corrupted and now crashing/broken

2012-08-14 Thread John Pye
Public bug reported:

For some time now, my Empathy window has always shown up with an error
about failing to connect to my Google Talk account. When I look at the
Accounts dialog, I saw TWO copies of my Google Talk account. If I
removed one of these by clicking the [-] icon, then the error message
would go away and everything work work fine.

Except that every time I started Empathy, the duplicate account would
reappear.

Today, I thought I would be clever. I renamed the duplicate account by
hovering over its name-text in the Accounts box, and adding some random
text at the end of the name. Then I clicked the [-] to remove the
duplicate account.

This time, when the Accounts dialog closed, there were no online
contacts shown. When I attempted to open the Accounts box now, nothing
appears.

When I type 'empathy-accounts', nothing shows, and the command exits
silents after about 20 seconds.

Now my Empathy is completely broken -- I can't see a way to refresh it
back to no accounts again. Where are the Accounts stored? How can I
clean them out? What's causing this crashed/broken behaviour?

I'm on latest Empathy with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

[Bug 1032892] [NEW] Loading addressbook summary very slow with cached online addressbook

2012-08-03 Thread John Pye
Public bug reported:

I've got a CardDAV addressbook stored in the free 'fruux' service and
I've set up Evolution to use it to store my addresses. But it's very
slow when writing emails. If I write the person's name in the 'to' box,
it's very slow to recognise the name and add an underline to indicate
it's been recognised. If I click the 'to' button and attempt to search
for a name, the bottom of the dialog shows Loading address book
summary and it takes 10-20 seconds until the my search result appears.

I'm using a slow (3G phone) internet connection, but I have the address
book set with copy book content locally for offline operation.
However, it appears that when I'm on a *slow* connection, it ignores the
local copy and keeps using the online copy regardless.

Is there some way that this situation could be improved, so that the
online content is only synchronised periodically, and not every time I
add an email address to a new email?

I'm using latest Evolution 3.2.3 on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

[Bug 979287] [NEW] Can't add 'other locations' for clock in 12.04

2012-04-11 Thread John Pye
Public bug reported:

Release: Ubuntu 12.04 beta 32-bit (via VirtualBox on Win7)
Package: gnome-control-center 1:3.4.0-0ubuntu4

I attempted to add 'Sydney' and 'Canberra' to the 'other locations' list
of the clock applet.

The locations aren't recognized (I'm not sure ANY locations that I type
are recognized) so for the moment it looks as if the location database
is missing, or some other bug is stopping the locations from being
parsed correctly.

The new interface is very unhelpful because it's not clear if the lookup
is failing to do anything, or whether the placename is unknown, or
whether I have simply failed to click/type something. There should be a
status bar giving some feedback, or something like that.

Could it be that this is related to missing Localisation data on my
system? If so, the control center should notify me rather than failing
silently.

[Bug 524146] [NEW] Evince crashes with Australian Standards documents

2010-02-18 Thread John Pye
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

I have been viewing a couple of Australian Standards documents (PDF)
from saiglobal.com. I can send the files via email to a developer who
wants them, but I can't post them online. The documents contain some
kind of copy prevention, but they open and view perfectly well unless
you try to click within the page to highlight text, etc. If you do that,
then more often than not, Evince crashes (and immediately disappears).

The documents I tried were AS/NZS 2712:2007 and AS/NZS 4234:2008.

Let me know if I can send you the sample docs to try out.

[Bug 104807] Re: Support for Videos

2010-01-21 Thread John Pye
Problem with not having this feature is that offloading files from a
camera becomes a two-stage process -- first offload using f-spot then
manually check for movie files, and copy those somewhere as well, in
that case.

Without this feature, it's too easy to just do the first step, then
forget then other step, and clear the camera card without checking for
other kinds of files.

[Bug 490580] [NEW] yelp search is extremely slow

2009-11-30 Thread John Pye
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

When I search using Yelp, some queries take 60 seconds or even more to
yield a response.

To me, this kind of search performance suggests that a very naive search
system is being used, and perhaps a move to a more sophisticated search
engine is required, such as for example xapian-omega.

My test was a search for the word swig. I got 14 hits but it tool well
over a minute to do that, which is long enough for most people to think
that it's hung/crashed/broken.

[Bug 483855] Re: No URI handler implemented for mms. is the error I receive when opening http://www.gpb.org/radiostream. I cannot find how to correct.

2009-11-23 Thread John Pye
I get this error too, when attempting to use the following page:
http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/content/2009/s2735044.htm

If I copy the video URLs and open them with VLC they work fine. But the
default handler, Totem, gives this error about not having a URL handler
for MMS.

[Bug 339782] [NEW] SWIG documentation not correctly located

2009-03-08 Thread John Pye
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

I installed the package swig-doc and noted, at the end of the
installation process, the output:

Registering documents with scrollkeeper...

I opened up Yelp and searched for swig and indeed, I got a listing.
But when I clicked the link, I get an error Could not read file in a
dialog, with the text:

The file ‘/usr/share/doc/swig-doc/Manual/index.html’ could not be read.
This file might be missing, or you might not have permissions to read
it.

However this file is present, and shows perfectly in firefox. There is
also no permission problem, as suggested about.

This appears to be clearly a Yelp problem, as opposed to a problem with
the packaging of SWIG.

Cheers

[Bug 337096] [NEW] Need documentation for how to add documentation to yelp

2009-03-02 Thread John Pye
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

It's not clear to me whether it is intended that Yelp will hold all the
HTML (DocBook, etc?) help documents installed on a system, but it's
clear to me that there are many packages on an Ubuntu system that
install these types of files (help files in HTML format, eg gsl-doc-
html, openoffice.org-dev-doc, flex-doc, scons, and many more) where
these files simply disappear into the file system and are very hard to
locate unless you know they exist, and use 'dpkg' to get a file listing.

Wouldn't it be a good thing if Ubuntu packaging required or advised
packagers to register their documentation files with Yelp, so that they
could be indexed and searchable, just as the basic documentation set is?

If Yelp isn't intended to fulfill this role, then I think some kind of
unified help browser that *does* is needed.

[Bug 336485] [NEW] Evince has 'memory' of initial view, makes testing new PDFs difficult

2009-03-01 Thread John Pye
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

When creating PDFs with OpenOffice, I have a need to test them to make
sure that when the PDF opens, it opens on the page I specified, and with
the view optins I specified. Evince scotches my efforts at testing new
PDFs because it remembers the last page/view configuration I used for
that document, even if it has been overwritten in the meantime.

Can I suggest that if a PDF file has changed, Evince should 'forget' its
view settings for that file, and reset them to the settings specified in
the file itself.

Either that, or a new command-line option should be added telling Evince
not to use its 'memory' for previously-seen file.

[Bug 133656] Re: Synchronising Tomboy via Webdav doesn't work

2009-01-06 Thread John Pye
Please change the importance from 'Wishlist' to something else. The
comment from Greg Grossmeier is not correct in my opinion: Tomboy is
currently encouraging the user to install 'wdfs', but doing so is not
possible. No new AddIn for Tomboy is required, what is simply required
is that wdfs be packaged for Ubuntu, and no changes AFAICT to the Tomboy
package itself.

So: the importance is higher than wishlist because Tomboy's as-presented
functionality is broken and gives misleading user feedback, and the fix
is not an upstream problem, because no new Tomboy code is required.

[Bug 298268] [NEW] shortcuts for view resize are not displayed in menu

Shortcuts exist in Totem to resize the movie window to different zoom
ratios: 1:1, 2:1, 1:2. There are keyboard shortcuts for these (namely

[Bug 114462] Re: Printing with Print range prints wrong page range

2008-09-23 Thread John Pye
Reopening, because I'm not clear on what the resolution was here.

I tried printing a page range from this PDF:
http://web.mit.edu/lienhard/www/ahtt.html

This PDF uses page numbering like i,ii,iii etc such that actual labelled
page numbers in the bulk of the text are offset from the simple natural
number sequence. I think that the 'Print range' input box should use the
labelled page numbers, rather than the natural numbers, because that is
what the 'go to page' box does in evince.

[Bug 258480] Re: evince doesn't support page-level attachments

1. take a pdf A.pdf
2. take another pdf, B.pdf.
3. pdftk A.pdf attach_files B.pdf to_page 4 output A_attached.pdf
4. open A_attached.pdf with evince.
5. go to page 4
6. no attachment appears

If you believe that this functionality *has* been implemented, then I'll
upload something. But it looks to me like it's not supported; I don't
see any documentation about this being a supported feature, so is there
actually anything to test?

[Bug 232219] Re: Second evince window does not focus when launched

2008-08-15 Thread John Pye
I must apologise for missing some information in the original bug
report. You must be opening these PDF files from another program, not
just from Nautilus. For example, if I have two PDF files in my computer
somewhere,

1. open the first PDF using Nautilus. leave it open.
2. open firefox, navigate to file:///home/john/mypdffolder and open the second
PDF file
3. when firefox asks, say 'open' with 'document viewer'.
4. the new evince window appears in front, but without focus.
5. pressing alt-F4 causes Firefox to close, instead of the new evince window.

I believe the same bug shows when opening a PDF file using LyX, so it's
not a firefox bug, AFAICT. It could be a metacity bug, I guess.

[Bug 258480] [NEW] evince doesn't support page-level attachments

2008-08-15 Thread John Pye
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Using pdftk attach_files to_page, it is possible to create page-level
PDF attachments to PDF files. Evince doesn't seem to support these types
of attachments, however, and silently ignores them. It would be
preferable if evince could as a minimum display these attachments as
document-level attachments. Otherwise the user has no way of knowing
that these attachments exist.

See pdftk man page for info on how to create a test case (it's quite
simple)

Attached is a sample PDF made with publically-available PDF files. It
demonstrates the problem. Original PDF was retrieved from

Note that page-level attachments (pdftk ... attach_files ... to_page)

[Bug 257277] [NEW] evince fails to correctly extract attachment

2008-08-12 Thread John Pye
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

While using 'pdftk' I was able to attach a PDF document within another
PDF as a document-level attachment. Using evince 2.22.2-0ubuntu1 on
Ubuntu Hardy, I am able to see that document-level PDF attachment and I
can extract the file using 'save as' in the 'Attachments' sidebar.

The problem is that when I attempt to open that extracted attachment, it
doesn't work. Further investigation shows that the extracted PDF file is
about 30% of the size of the original intended attachment, and also has
a different MD5sum.

I checked with the 'pdftk' function 'unpack_files' and I can see that
the file is correctly embedded in the PDF, because I can recover it
exactly using pdftk.

Perhaps this is a problem with poppler or some underlying library. I'm
not sure.

[Bug 244740] Re: can't change name of button in dialog box

2008-07-03 Thread John Pye
I think that this *is* a bug. Glade-3 gives no feedback to the user to
tell them what they are doing wrong. It's not clear why it is refusing
to do what I want.

My assumption was that any given window would not be able to have the
same name repeated, but that different windows/dialogs could use the
same names if I wanted.

Also, I am able to change the name to 'applybutton' in Glade-2 and
everything works just fine in that case.

I am not using Appearance--Visual Effects.

To be more specific, I think that I am only seeing this effect when PDF
files are opened via Firefox. It appears that Firefox is not correctly
focussing the new Evince window after it opens. Not sure if that makes
this an Evince bug or a Firefox bug or perhaps a Metacity bug.

[Bug 229999] Re: gedit doesnt automatically syntax highlight .f Fortran files

2008-06-25 Thread John Pye
Reopening this bug. In Ubuntu Hardy, just attempt to open a .f files
using gedit. It should by default be highlighted in the same way as .for
files.

On my system I can see that there is no entry in /etc/mime.types for
fortran source code. There is text/x-csrc for C code, and text/x-c++src
for C++ code and text/x-python for python, so why not for fortran code?

I suspect that the problem lies in the lack of a correct mime type
categorisation for Fortran code, as this is the system which gedit uses
when determining how to syntax-highlight a file.

[Bug 242811] [NEW] file roller support status for 7-zip files unclear

2008-06-24 Thread John Pye
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

File Roller is a nice program for browsing the contents of various
archive files without having to extract the whole lot.

Recently I attempted to open a 7-zip file in Ubuntu Hardy by double-
clicking. It opened into File Roller but then File Roller complained
that it did not have support for 7-zip.

What was not clear at this time was that File Roller did indeed support
the 7-zip format; all that I needed to do was to install the 'p7zip'
package using Synaptic.

It would be good if the File Roller error message could be patched to
advise the user that they need to install the missing command-line tool
in order for its support of that file format to work correctly.

Even better would be for a dialog box to ask the user if they want to
install the appropriate package(s), as with Totem and Gstreamer.

[Bug 222532] Re: Option to connect to secure webdav network locations missing in nautilus

2008-06-18 Thread John Pye
I think that this is a bug with the 'Connect to Server' tool, rather
than any inherent problem with Nautilus.

I found that I was able to access a WebDAV (HTTPS) server by opening
Nautilus, then typing ctrl-L to open the location bar, then typing in
davs://server.example.com/folder/name/ and pressing enter. A box then
popped up asking for username and password.

There is still a bug however, because I cannot access the same location
using the Places--Connect to Server method.

[Bug 232219] [NEW] Second evince window does not focus when launched

2008-05-20 Thread John Pye
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

I'm using Evince in Ubuntu Hardy.

When I open a first instance of Evince with a PDF file, it get focus as
the top window and I can move around the document etc.

When I keep that document open and open a second PDF file, a new Evince
window appears, and comes to the front and contains my second document.
But it does not get focus. The window header is the paler colour.

When I press alt-F4 to close the Evince window, I get the very annoying
result that my second PDF does not close, but instead the window from
which the PDF was opened is closed instead. This is particularly
annoying when using a program that generates PDF files as an output,
such as LyX.

[Bug 156908] 'next document' keyboard shortcut stolen by compiz

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

I've just updated to Ubuntu 7.10 and set the window manager to 'compiz'
using the new 'Appearence' dialog in the System-Preferences menu.

This breaks gedit, now, however, because Compiz has stolen the ctrl-alt-
pgup and ctrl-alt-pgdn keyboard shortcuts for desktop switching. Not
surprising, because I don't know of other programs that use this
shortcut.

Could gedit please adopt either firefox standards (ctrl-pgup) or gnome-

[Bug 116141] JPEG printed-to-file as PDF is huge

2007-05-22 Thread John Pye
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eog

There seems to be a lack of a good tool in GNOME for bunching scanned
pages together into a PDF.

I thought that I could do it with EOG, then use pdftk to concatenate the
pages in to a single PDF.

But the resulting PDFs are huge, many times the size of the original
JPEG.

It seems that printing a JPEG to a PDF file in EOG causes the image
compression to be lost.

Can EOG be fixed, or is there some other tools that's better in GNOME?

I ended up using OpenOffice but that's a too-big stick for the job
really.

[Bug 116156] Print-to-PDF from EOG needs compression options

2007-05-22 Thread John Pye
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eog

A followup to bug 116141, pared back and phrased, I hope, in the form of
a feature request that can be accepted:

It would be good if EOG provided PDF compression options in its 'print
to PDF' feature.

At present, the PDFs output by EOG can easily be many times the size of
the original image. I consider this to be a bug: all that EOG has to do
is wrap the JPEG with a bit of text and that should be fine, at least in
the case of some image file-types. The fact that a 200K JPEG can give
you an 1.2 M PDF is unexpected and likely to users into confusion.

Cheers
JP

Isn't that what 'apport' attached to the bug report? I thought that's
what the uploads were.

whatever. It added the above attachments. That was the whole process.

Re: [Bug 115925] Re: just after I opened a new window; ssh connection to remote server with key passphrase reqest

2007-05-22 Thread John Pye
Ahh, that explains why you have been confused. Yes, it sounds like it.
I'm afraid it might have been a once-off crash. If it happens again,
I'll certain report it and watch the apport process more carefully.

As I recall, I had one gnome-terminal window open, then I used the menu
to open another 'profiled' session, and about the time that the second
window showed up, I spotted the 'apport' window, with something about
how it was gathering information... I think the gnome-terminal windows
were unresponsive after that (I can't be sure if *both* of them were).
Then I closed them, and apport had opened a Launchpad web page, which I
filled in after quickly checking for related bugs.

Not sure that helps at all. If it happens again, I'll report it.

Cheers
JP

[Bug 115925] Re: just after I opened a new window; ssh connection to remote server with key passphrase reqest

2007-05-21 Thread John Pye
This is a crash report. The problem is that it crashed.

I was opening a connection from my set of profiles. I have about 10
different profiles set up for different hosts. Normally they all work
fine, with X forwarding, port forwarding, compression, etc. Just this
once there was a crash.

I have had the occasional hardware problem on this machine, so if
there's nothing obvious in the attached, you can put it down to that.

Cheers

[Bug 116130] Default handling of TIFF files

2007-05-21 Thread John Pye
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I don' know if this is the right application under which to report this
bug, but seems maybe like the right one.

I received a fax in TIFF file format by email just now. From Thundebird,
this file was opened by default by EOG. EOG does not support multipage
TIFF files as this one was, and nor would I expect it to.

I had to save the document to my desktop and open it in Evince. Then I
could see all the pages.

The default handling of TIFF files should be by a program that does not
lead to any possibility of a user failing to 'see' all of the content.
So I think that the default bindind for TIFF files should be to Evince,
rather than to EOG.

[Bug 95055] keyboard shortcut for drawing an ellipse is unusable

2007-03-23 Thread John Pye
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dia

I launched Dia and checked the Tools menu for the shortcut for drawing
an ellipse. It says Alt+E. But when I type that, I always get the Edit
menu dropping down instead (obviously). Also, there are not _Ellipse
underscores in the Tools menu, so I can't use a sequence like Alt+T E to
get this functionality either.

[Bug 75464] Re: Alt-up keystroke sometimes inactive in GtkFileChooser

2006-12-22 Thread John Pye
Really, are you sure? You didn't press ESC before step 5 (I mean step 6
actually)?

I only have the directory /usr/share.

I should have clarified, I *don't* have the ctrl-L 'location' box open.

I'm not doing anything funny with keymaps etc etc (I have default US
keyboard, English language, Australian timezone). This is a generic Gtk+
problem with context search boxes. Not just GtkFileChooser.

Are you clear on what I mean when I say 'context search box'? It's the
little input box that puts up just near the Open button in the bottom
right.

[Bug 75464] Alt-up keystroke sometimes inactive in GtkFileChooser

2006-12-12 Thread John Pye
Public bug reported:

Suggestion for improvement...

The GTK FileChooser has a keystroke (ALT+UP_ARROW) for moving to the
parent directory. However this keystroke is inactive when the file list
context-search is active, and pressing 'ESC' to deactive the context-
search seems unintuitive.

Example:
1. gedit
2. file...open...
3. move up to top level directory
4. type 'usr' followed by enter
5. type 'shar', but don't press enter
5. type alt-up (nothing happens)

In this case it would be nice if the 'alt-up' keystroke could bubble up
to the FileChooser and not just be ignored by the context search box.
Don't know how hard that might/might not be though.

Thanks for all the great work.

Cheers
JP
