[Bug 696546] Re: Crypic error comment

2015-08-20 Thread John Winterton
Interesting that a bug from 2010 should still be around. I haven't had
this problem lately, but if it still shows up in testing, it should be
fixed.

[Bug 936257] Re: the system settings grid shouldn't use a fixed geometry

2014-04-18 Thread John Winterton
Just installed trusty (14.04) and this upstream problem is still
present. Someone should send a message upstream that the system is for
the end user. This has been present for several releases and as a
programmer myself, I know this is a simple fix.

Yes, I did a boot. No joy.

I realise this is beta software, but wouldn't it be sensible to get the
file system interface up almost before anything else? Installed
packages such as this must appear in the application choice listing
after they've been installed.

This may turn out to be a problem with the installer (apt), but the
symptoms are that nautilus is sick.

Hoping for an early fix, the frozen north signs out.

Forgot to mention that the work around is to run the wine command from
the correct directory in the console. Works just fine thank you, but
the shortcut would be nice.

One gets into operating habits, and find the facilities missing is
rather more than slightly annoying.

[Bug 936257] Re: the system settings grid shouldn't use a fixed geometry

2012-12-02 Thread John Winterton
I look forward to testing 13.04. Hard to believe that a few windows
properties settings can be such a pain, but I do understand that the
man-power shortage can cause problems.

I think a lot of it can be solved by doing a more assiduous QA inside
the heads of the programmers. They seem to be an uncaring lot. Wastn't
true of them when I was running a programming shop. The rule should be
Think what you are doing to users other than yourselves.

[Bug 936257] Re: the system settings grid shouldn't use a fixed geometry

2012-10-04 Thread John Winterton
One tends to wonder if invalid is simply a way of getting rid of this
problem without a statement that it has been addressed. I am currently
running the 12.10 Beta2 in test mode, and will have to examine this to
see if it is fixed or ameliorated in any way. It most certainly wasn't
in 12.04 LTS.

The windows do NOT resise if you change the font size. Either put the
controls back to default (all on) or fix the programs.

Something I've also noticed, is that some programs get overhauled on the
basis of a new release when it probably is not necessary. If it is not
broken, don't fix it.

More care needs to be taken with the desktops to maintain compatibility
with apps, especially apps written by the client base. Do you have any
idea how difficult it is to get management to agree to migrate to a new
version when all the in-house apps not only have to be tested, but in
all likelihood entered into a repair cycle for which there is no
allowance in a very busy development shop?

Lack of resources on your part must not cause a problem on my part. A
little more care and QA is needed.

[Bug 936257] Re: the system settings grid shouldn't use a fixed geometry

2012-10-04 Thread John Winterton
Thanks for taking a second look at this, Dylan.

This carelessness with respect to the controls is like telling your
corporate receptionist that she is irrelevant to the business and is
just a pretty face. The settings panel and all the sub-pages are the
opening shot when a new users or one who is upgrading gets his first
impression of the software.

I've been a programmer for over 50 years and I think this kind of thing
is unforgivable. I wouldn't do it, and there is no reason somebody who
wasn't even a twinkle in his grandpa's eye when I started out should do
it. I am pretty sure Ada Lovelace wouldn't do it either.

If slight changes in the user interface in the system invalidates
everything, it is time to talk about stability in the product. New
version of the desktops [sic] is not an excuse to revisit the source
code of every component under the sun (and under the moon too). If you
can't get better programmers, I may have to come out of retirement.

[Bug 936257] Re: the system settings grid shouldn't use a fixed geometry

2012-02-22 Thread John Winterton
Dylan, jgv:

I suggest, Dylan, you just try it and see what the effects are. They
are rather retarted, IMHO.

As a matter of interest, yesterday I pulled in all the necessary
software and tried the very first item in the Getting Started section of
GTK+ 3 reference manual. It runs without a hitch, producing the default
widget form which is both resizable, and in general what a window should
be.

Frankly, I don't understand why developers go out of their way to turn
some of these controls off. I've discovered another frog in alarmclock,
an app that I rather depend on to keep me going through the day. In
this version, while adding a new alarm, the text box for adding dialog
to the static popup doesn't appear to be enabled. I am going to report
this as a separate bug after I have nailed it down a little better.

I suggest that whoever is writing these specifications needs to shake
his head. There is a distinct trend in this version of Ubuntu (11.10)
to over-restrict some apps that were not previously so poor. This is
definitely a retreat from quality.

[Bug 936257] Re: the system settings grid shouldn't use a fixed geometry

2012-02-20 Thread John Winterton
Considering that this kind of thing is a simply poor decision on the
part of a programmer/developer, I believe it should be fixed for 12.04
LTS.

Most GUI systems I have used default to full control of the widget
window. I believe that this and similar sins of omission such as the
same problem with alacarte should be assigned to someone as an urgent
ongoing problem. This affects everyone who, like me, has difficulty
with the tiny default font sizes. It is a fairly simple thing for me to
increase my font size, but not very helpful if the widgets are
insensitive to this issue.

On the internationalization front, this kind of thing must be very bad
for users whose languges are more verbose than English.

Please pass this to the upstream developers. I think this is just a
matter of carelessness, and they need to become more aware of the user
community. The idea of casting pearls before swine is becoming endemic.

[Bug 936257] Re: the system settings grid shouldn't use a fixed geometry

2012-02-20 Thread John Winterton
Thanks, Seb. I do understand the point about software cycles.

I sometimes think that fixed software cycles are rules made to be
broken. I also understand the dearth of good developers.

I am sorry to say that I've been retired from programming now for nearly
25 years. I haven't written any real code since then so I am
thoroughly out of date. I do, however, insist that the stuff I get
should have at least been passed though a more thorough quality
assurance than I've been seeing on 11.10.

As an aside, I've given up on the Unity desktop. It is a matter of
personal preference, but I am now running xfce. I am not much oriented
to unexplained mysterious icons that jump into my face.

[Bug 936257] [NEW] Gnome-Control-Center window poorly programmed

Fixed by subsequent updates. Not surprising, I suppose, but this can
now be closed as being transient.

[Bug 850336] [NEW] Oneiric beta desktop non-functional.

2011-09-14 Thread John Winterton
Public bug reported:

I applied the published updates to oneiric beta this morning, and now I
no longer get any controls except for a menu in nautilus. ALT+F2 is not
working, so I can't get get a console command in.

Hope you will be able to fix this soon. Since I can't open a console, I
am unable to give the usual version information. Unity appears to be
broken.

[Bug 666380] Re: The case of the missing desktop

2011-06-23 Thread John Winterton
I think you can close this. I have switched to 11.04 and have not have
a recurrence. There has also been an upgrade to the ATI driver (fglrx)
that has fixed some other problems, It appears that there was an
initialization problem with gdm coming from some complication with Xorg
that has either been fixed or no longer exists because of revisions.

With neither compiz, nor metacity am I able to change the pointer from small
white (default) on this theme (Ambiance).
Since I have visual impairment problems, this is getting to be beyond annoying.
I do not choose to use other, high contrast themes because I find them
annoying.

Instead of trying to me-too smart phones, the alternate desktops should
have been better debugged. The default desktop with this release, which
arrived unannounced, is totally unacceptable to me. Trash like that
should be offered as an option, not as default. You are doing your best
to turn yourselves into Microsoft. If this goes on, I will find a
different distribution.

[Bug 747772] [NEW] gdm fails to come up completely.

2011-04-01 Thread John Winterton

After today's rather large update using recovery boot (update-manager
known to be sick), proceeded to regular terminal login and called gdm
using 'sudo gdm'. Login was OK.

However, some failure, perhaps with restoring panels caused large black
areas to appear on the desktop which could not be reversed. Mousing
around made them worse.

This is being submitted from low-graphics mode.

That update was so large it is hard to pin this down, and I hope you are
able to say what happened.

BTW, since the update is after the Beta release date, can I consider
this the beta now or is it still alpha?

Most intriguing. I created an account and now it says my password is

bug reporting, and since I can't use GNOME Bugzilla until I get some
clarification, I will have to rest here. Frankly, I have had
contretemps with Bugzilla software in the past, and I am not impressed.

[Bug 696546] [NEW] Crypic error comment

2011-01-02 Thread John Winterton
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 10.10

The package says An error occurred while adding files to archive.
This is about as helpful as the old IBM 7000 Series console message
'Operator must do something'. Even running this from console does not
produce a log of the errors.

If I have missed a report file, I crave enlightenment.

If there is a log, the message could at least say where it is. If there
is not a log, then the package needs to create one. I need to know
whether my archive is any good or not. And if it is bad, what parts of
it are untrustworthy.

I have run this twice to two different external hard drives with the
same result, and I am not amused.

[Bug 673141] [NEW] Nautilus fails to detect the manual removal of media

2010-11-09 Thread John Winterton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Description:Ubuntu 10.10

I manually changed media from a DVD to a CD without dismounting it first
in Nautilus or other application. I was surprised to find that the
change of media was ignored by the system. I don't know what happens to
the associated interrupts, but they should be serviced. They seem to be
ignored. I suspect that Nautilus is being mushroom managed by the
kernel and its driver.

I don't think it is good software policy to suppress or ignore
interrupts having to do with the presence or absence of media. In fact,
I think it is totally inappropriate to do so. Operating silliness like
this went out with the ATLAS-8. And yes, I am angry. There must be
someone who knows this system that can get this right.

[Bug 659927] Re: brasero fails to launch

2010-10-14 Thread John Winterton
I am sorry, it was all lost in a system crash yesterday. In light of
events, I had to format my disks, and I lost my archives as well, which
puts me back to square zero. I was so disgusted with 10.10 that I
retreated to 10.04 LTS.

Frankly, 10.10 has overtones of Vista. Rushed on to the scene for some
purpose other than providing the best software for its users.

Program runs correctly from CLI.

Clearly, something serious has happened to your implementation of xorg
and related items. Not only have several programs failed to perform in
the GUI environment, but you have also broken my nvidia-96 driver,
disabling my high graphics environment.

This release should have been held back, no matter what the marketing
people wanted.

The disk I just burned was for openSUSE.

This really is a small error either in specification or programming. I
think it falls into the area of public relations.

The same applies to the other problem which looks like this:

I have notices two misfeature's in the Alarm Clock panel applet
1. When a periodic alarm fires, the manager continues to show the countdown of
the next occurrence of that alarm. It should move on to the next alarm with
the least time left.
2. If you press the edit button, and no alarm is selected, it converts to add.
It should simply ignore the button if no alarm is selected or ask the user
which one he wants to edit. I would prefer a simple ignore (exit from the
button routine).

These are easy to work around, but they are slightly annoying. A simple
search of the list would solve item 1 and a simple if statement would
fix item 2.

I am sure that we all want this operating system to be the best around,
and it very nearly is.

[Bug 605637] Re: Brasero will not copy cd to image file because cdrdao is not present. False!

2010-07-16 Thread John Winterton
The only cdrkit I could find was cdrkit-doc.

I widened my scope of updates to include the proposed objects, and got a
big update. Strangely, before the update, but after the chanve, cdrdao
showed as uninstalled where it showed as installed before this. If
brasero was looking for a specific version, its error message leaves
something to be desired. Will try this again and see if this is now
cleared up.

[Bug 605637] Re: Brasero will not copy cd to image file because cdrdao is not present. False!

2010-07-16 Thread John Winterton
Widening the scope of updates was no help. An apparently new cdrdao was
loaded, but no soap. The matter is not so urgent that I am going to
wade through all the stuff in the cdrkit documentation to try and do
this by hand. However, whatever is going on should be solved. I think
brasero is looking for cdrdao in the wrong place. On my machine it is
in /usr/bin. If brasero is looking anywhere else, it explains why it
doesn't find it.

[Bug 605637] [NEW] Brasero will not copy cd to image file because cdrdao is not present. False!

2010-07-14 Thread John Winterton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

I have a mounted data CD and I asked Brasero to copy it to an image
file. I would have preferred an ISO image, but would have taken
anything if it could only do it at all. Brasero went through the
formalities then claimed that the module cdrdao was not available. I
checked with synaptic and found that the module was present. Just to be
sure, I flagged it for re-installation and ran dpkg using synaptic.

After the re-install completed, Brasero continued to refuse in the same
way. This has not been a useful package for some time, and it should be
cleaned up. Maybe there are just too many cooks in this pot.

Brasero version: 2.30.2-0ubuntu1\
UBUNTU version 10.04 plus upgrades to date.

I was trying to create a short-cut to mounting these disks repeatedly as
this may damage them. I have used the disks directly to iinstall the
relevant software, but would rather not if I could keep an on-line copy.

[Bug 572603] [NEW] Can't log in to suspended session

2010-04-30 Thread John Winterton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Lucid Lynx (10.4) released today.
I suspect this may not be a problem with gdm but the infrastructure governing
logins. Here is the scenario:
1. Perform a switch user from my ID
2. Login to root (yes, I need root user access)
3. Some maintenance activity
4. Log out of root expecting to return to my ID via a lock screen
5. Blank screen requiring a power off restart

Workaround:
Log off instead of switch user. Everything works fine then.

Comment: The new version seems to have a lot of vulnerabilities related
to signing on.

[Bug 488534] [NEW] Blank combo box when wanting to change Font

2009-11-25 Thread John Winterton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gucharmap

This doesn't seem to be quite what has been previously reported.
Version is Karmic.

This package worked quite well up until today when I switched to
webdings to pick up an oddball character. When I went to switch fonts
for another need, the combo box presented was blank. This was not
previously the case.

I am getting a lot of blank screens with this release, mostly to do with
consoles or popups. If this is a symptom of the same thing, I hope it
helps you all to find this clearly generic problem. Maybe it is me, but
I think I have a more or less standard set of software.
