[Bug 93847] Re: Excessive CPU usage by Gnome System Monitor

2010-09-19 Thread JohnL
My last entry (#79) I suggested fix turned out to be short lived.
Changing the frequency also gave false hope of a fix. I spend 30 hours
since trying to better understand this issue. I've installed Ubuntu
10.04 and Mint 9 on old then new HDs thinking it was drive related. I
installed older and current versions of each OS all w/o real success. I
use the Terminal command ps ux to watch the CPU% slowly climbed to
100% over a short period of time. When I final discovered there is a
memory leak in glx (?) relating it back to the Nvidia drivers
(BUG/565981 Report); Apparently the ATI driver has been fixed now and
hopefully the Nvidia soon. Bottom line, I did one last fresh install of
Mint 9 and after learning that older Nvidia drivers were going to work
w/my Nvidia video card, I followed the guide to manually install
Nvidia's nouveau driver (per http://www.ubuntugeek.com/howto-install-
nvidia-drivers-manually-on-ubuntu-10-04-lucid-lynx.html); know it
removes all the Nvidia proprietary drives. Once your installation is
complete, be sure and shut off your computer and let it sit for a while
before rebooting (rebooting directly will not work). I still see the
CPU% creap up occurring but not nearly as bad as before. At least I can
now stream radio and pay my bills at the same time. I hope this helps
someone.

[Bug 93847] Re: Excessive CPU usage by Gnome System Monitor

2010-09-12 Thread JohnL
It's amazing how this problem has been so persistant with Ubuntu (CPU
jumping to 90-100%), I wish I could help resolve it but I'm not a coder.
However, I can share my work around; I uninstalled 'gnome-system-
monitor' and now use the 'awn system monitor' instead to monitor my
system's performance. I really miss the graphical presentation but
don't want to waste anymore time fretting over it. I'll check back
after U10.10 is released and see if it will last another release. Good
luck. jwillar

[Bug 608707] [NEW] Filter for only Active Tasks doesn't work

2010-07-22 Thread JohnL
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Active Tasks filter selects ALL tasks which have not finished instead of just
Active tasks (Which are tasks that HAVE STARTED but ARE NOT COMPLETE) For
example, the 10 yearly maintenance for a fuel tank may start in April 2016 and
is due for completion in August 2016. it is NOT active now just because it is
not complete. The task doesn't even start for another 5 years!
Evolution is not the only PIM to get this wrong, of course. MS Outlook and
Thunderbird Lightning also make the same mistake. In fact it appears to be only
Novell Groupwise which understands this and displays just (really) active tasks
by default. At least it did back in 1990. Sadly its all been downhill since
Windows wrested control of networking from Novell.

[Bug 227753] Re: gvfs reports root partition 100% full

2009-10-19 Thread JohnL
I had the same problem and found my solution here at http://www.blog
.arun-prabha.com/2008/07/22/deleting-files-from-roots-trash-folder-in-
ubuntu/. I did not have to re-install the OS.

Apparently when the network share drive fails to mount due to the fstab
problem (network not up, drive will not mount), sBackup creates the
backup in your root folder. The procedure at this site outline the
steps to clear the hidden backup folder/file then describes how to
delete them from the root Trash folder. I just cleared up 22 Gib of
reported space. Kudos to Arun Subramanian’s Blog (Deleting files from
root’s trash folder in Ubuntu)!

I hope this helps

[Bug 221529] [NEW] Hardy requires two log-ins

2008-04-24 Thread JohnL
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-session

I installed Kubuntu 8.04 (RC) from a CD onto a DELL laptop two days
before the April 24 release. I booted my system to the login screen,
enter my user name password and taken to the desktop. Within 3
seconds the screen went blank and I was returned to the login screen. I
logged in a second time, returned to the desktop but this time all
worked as expected. Next, I updated a desktop from Kubuntu 7.10 to 8.04
using the web services and got the same results after the initial
bootup.

[Bug 63268] (no subject)

2006-10-25 Thread JohnL
That would be fine and I guess Ubuntu has command line tools.
The standard tool for service administration appears to be chkconfig,
but Ubuntu doesn't acknowledge it. What are the command line tools for
service admin in Ubuntu?

[Bug 63268] Re: [services-admin]Services application in Ubuntu 6.0.6 LTS only shows currently active services and doesn't provide any mechanism to modify settings.

2006-10-06 Thread JohnL
This is an administration tool - you should be able to see everything.

Sure, you may be able to damage the system, but also, if the system has
damaged itself (through some broken installation, virus etc) you need
complete control to be able to fix it.

[Bug 63268] [services-admin]Services application in Ubuntu 6.0.6 LTS only shows currently active services and doesn't provide any mechanism to modify settings.

2006-10-04 Thread JohnL
Public bug reported:

Click on Services Icon to open the services editor.

After entering root password, a window opens displaying a few active
services in a list box. There is a check box beside each service and
presumabely one can disable an active service, but, there is no way to
see or activate inactive services (as in say SysV Init Editor in other
distros).

Clicking the help button, displays a help window and instructions for (what
appears to be) a different application. The images in the help file show a
window with
- run level selector
-list box displaying all services, whether active or not and a check box to
select.

As the actual application differs from the help file, I suspect someone
has dumbed down the application to the point that it is not usable,
rather than that the menu link is broken.

In any case, it needs to be fixed.
