[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations
sk8erbender: Thank you for the bug confirmation. However, Dylan McCall put it succinctly in comment #202: The source of this problem is really close to the heart of the panel's design. It allows user-defined positions for applets, and these are stored with absolute values (in pixels). No amount of fiddling will change that that is a very poor, inflexible design. Unless a dev corrects me, this bug will not be fixed. It will only go away when a replacement is enacted, or there is a complete redesign of the fundamental panel code architecture and assumptions. In the meantime, there are a number of workarounds in the discussion above, but for now, this paper cut will continue to bleed. [Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations
Given the number of duplicates and people subscribed to this bug, I thought I'd offer a workaround that I recently discovered: Docky. As I currently see it, the gist of docky is to recreate, in open-source fashion, the OS X dock. On OS X I find the dock annoying, but since installing Docky, I rather enjoy it. I believe it only available if you're running Karmic or newer. For Lucid, it's already part of the repositories: $ sudo apt-get install docky If you're running Karmic, I direct you to the docky site, but it's basically 3 command line operations, not one: http://www.go-docky.com/ For myself, I've even gained some vertical space on my screen because I'm now able to remove the bottom panel, after enabling fade away in Docky. Heh, I was fully prepared to be patient when I reported this wishlist item over a year ago. :-) I didn't know how to report this bug to Jamie Zawinksi (xscreensaver fella), so I ended up writing him an email. I imagine he gets hundreds of emails per day, and since I didn't get a response back I didn't know if it had been lost. Then I posted it here. I'm actually not sure if this is a screensaver issue, or a window manager issue, so I punted and just posted. In other words, does the screensaver need to even know that those events happened? I don't think so. Some other thoughts: if screen has been turned off (not just black or running a screensaver), then there's no need to turn the screen back on. I can confirm on Lucid. With both gnomescreensaver and and xscreensaver installed. I not sure where the problem lies, but judging as best I can with my rudimentary debugging skills, the attached dbus output would seem to imply that - totem (1.774) is sending an Inhibit signal, - the ScreenSaver (1.602) receives that request and then informs the SessionManager. - Meanwhile, the SessonManager turns around and responds false for a check of IsInhibited for some reason (return reply_serial=1926: boolean false). ** Attachment added: Totem dbus interaction. This is still an issue in Karmic, as of today. It's definitely low priority, as I haven't researched it for over a year, but it is annoying. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center I normally have 1280x800 resolution. However, sometimes I need to mirror my display to a project or presentation. Depending on the projector, this can reduce my screen resolution to 800x600. The issue is with the taskbar quicklaunch icons. As shown in after.png, the icons are drawn behind the System menu. This isn't so bad, except that if I click on the system menu to restore my screen resolution, the action of the taskbar is to click the underlying icon. 1. The presentation of icon and system menu is not consistent with the Behind the scenes of what actually happens during interaction. They should be consistent. 2. I think the correct behavior is to leave access to the system menus, not the icons, so the behind the scenes is what should change; the icons should *not* be drawn over top of the system menus. A plan of action: if there is not enough room to display the quicklaunch icons, don't. Instead, either do a slideshow effect, or place a down triangle there which can be clicked to expand to the list of quicklaunch icons. A data point: on Jaunty, this has slightly improved. Now, it reverts back to what it was when I plug in the power. But, it always seems to go to 50% brightness or less when I unplug the power. So, if I had set battery to 85% brightness and power to 100% brightness, unplugging would then result in 50% brightness: 1- AC power (100%) 2- Battery (50%) - manually change to 85% 3- AC power (100%) 4- Battery (50%) - it lost my settings. -- return from dim not to full brightness https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/225475 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

No news. I did send the bug upstream. [Bug 367325] Re: show file name while burning image
Having been through this before, I'll get a very similar response. There is a very wide gap between the end-user-seeing-a-bug-in-in- use-software and the developer-developing-on-the-cutting-edge. As a semi-educated end-user, I don't know how to cross that bridge effectively enough for developers. In some sense, launchpad *is* that interface for me (and I imagine lots of others). I'd love to help the open source and Free software worlds, but a developer I am not. I'm an end-user, and there are folks (such as yourself?) who know how to effectively talk to developers. In the mean time, I'm *not* running Jaunty, nor will I be in the near future. This bug will have to wait until someone either cares, or I update to the latest and greatest. [Bug 335255] Re: incorrect mount timeout when no user intervention
1. Yes, every time. 2. Just tried on Jaunty. The issue is still there, although it takes a *much* longer time to reach it: It takes 300 seconds to timeout. Now, it correctly removes the interaction dialog (user credentials), but still has the explanation dialog. I think the reaction from Ubuntu in this particular use case should just remove the interaction and be done. When it's clear that the user just forgot about it, there's no need to clutter the interface with Yet Another box saying what happened. This is a semi-cosmetic thing, so no big deal really, but I can't imagine it would be that hard to either add a timeout function to just make it disappear, or to not have it timeout at all. Tangentially, the Intrepid version did at least give possible reasons, which for other NoReply reasons, is a good thing. [Bug 259186] Re: gnome-screenshot won't save to a ram disk
No need to reopen this bug if it's fixed, but a data point: I wonder if the internal issue was that the vfs/gnome-screenshot was checking for enough free space prior to saving? If so, I believe the RAMFS doesn't report that. So, my workaround was to change that dir to tmpfs: $ sudo mount -t tmpfs -o size=4M,noatime,mode=755,uid=kevin,gid=kevin kevins_ram_disk ~/ram The tmpfs requires a size (e.g. 4M) and therefore lets the VFS check this. [Bug 281440] Re: archive should order contents hierarchically
Okay, researching it more thoroughly now, I think the issue is that even when I sort by location, file-roller wants to keep the directories sorted together. This is incorrect, in my opinion. If I sort by location, the entries should be sorted *by location*. In the BaseDir screenshots I've posted (tarred so as to make one attachment), you'll note that the BaseDir is not sorted properly, I suspect because the directories are sorted alphabetically together, then the rest. The directory BaseDir contains all the rest, is rooted at / as far as file-roller is concerned (another bug, in my opinion), and so should be sorted first. In the Dirs-sorted-wrong series, note that Edir is separated from it's sibling Edir entries in the images. This is not correct for sorted by location, in my opinion. Does this help to explain what I think is incorrect? ** Attachment added: gzipped tarball of file-roller screenshots and associated archives to highlight Location sorting error http://launchpadlibrarian.net/18452817/file-roller-bug-pix-and-zips.tgz -- archive should order contents hierarchically https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/281440 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 244324] Re: no sound-server available, rhythmbox freezes
Sorry, I should have gotten back to this sooner. My point with this bug report was not that I had my settings set properly for the exact setup (I do, but I have to remember to start pulseaudio, currently), but that Rhythmbox dies. A program should /not/ just die; Rhythmbox should *gracefully* handle the error and not just crash. Juxtapose this behavior with, say, Amarok. Amarok deals with no sound- server much more gracefully. I'll give you that it could be an ALSA configuration issue, but if so, it's a parallel issue. This may be related as well: if I'm using Rhythmbox and switch to a tty (e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F1), the connection gets broken (or something) and Rhythmbox dies. Again, juxtapose this behavior with Amarok: it doesn't die, and continues to play sound normally. Suggest not closing this bug, or otherwise help me better articulate where to find the bug *in Rhythmbox*. -- no sound-server available, rhythmbox freezes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/244324 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 244324] Re: no sound-server available, rhythmbox freezes
@ Mike, I've updated the description. Even included a healthy competition charge. :-) Does that work? @Sebastien, hmm, okay. From an end-user point of view, all I know is that Rhythmbox freezes. Good call in deducing *where* the problem is, as I mentioned this on the Rhythmbox mailing lists or discussion room (don't remember anymore) and their general reaction was it ain't our fault, but didn't help pinpoint where it might be. Good call. I didn't do a proper cut and paste (again!), but I also do a $ sudo chown kevin:kevin $HOME/ram so that I can write to it, etc. The touch is a good test. I haven't run it from the CLI, so I can't confirm that it's crashing, just that it doesn't work. [Bug 259186] [NEW] gnome-screenshot won't save to a ram disk

[Bug 244324] Re: no sound-server available, rhythmbox freezes
what did you select in the system menu, preferences, sounds, music and video option? They're all set to ALSA. Not PulseAudio. Setting to PulseAudio will likely solve my immediate issue but is *not* the point of the bug report. The point is that Rhythmbox should not crash if no sound server is available. It should gracefully handle the unexpected condition. As for the DebuggingProgramCrash, I get this: $ sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-dbgsym=0.11.5-0ubuntu8 ... WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated! rhythmbox-dbgsym ... I'm not willing to install software that can't be authenticated, and the instructions on the provided link do not give me a key to add. I will note that I can reproduce this every time. [Bug 33349] Re: Timeout is too short on dimming
I suppose this is a request for a feature. I /could/ do the command line, but what I love about Ubuntu is that for the most part, I don't have to. It's not a decent enough work around to satisfy this (admittedly picky) user. How does one go about making this a blueprint request? -- Timeout is too short on dimming https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/33349 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 33349] Re: Timeout is too short on dimming
slider_idea++; To put some more meat on this from another user, I often will sit idle reading a long web page, figuring out a page of code, or deciding what to write next, and inevitably the screen will get dimmer while I'm in the middle of a thought process. This comes at just the right time to be annoying and distracting to me. If the timeout was shorter, I would turn the feature off completely. If it was longer, I don't think I'd recognize the benefits of the dimming before my screen saver cut in, dimming the screen entirely. What I think would be helpful is two-fold: * People think differently, at different speeds, and with different queues acting as distractions. An option to change the timeout before dim would be awfully nice. Here is where the slider option might fit well. * Other times, I think the timeout would be great set to a shorter value, except for key moments when I'm clearly working. In these moments, it should not interfere at all. An option to perform a mouse gesture / keystroke combination / mouse placement that would temporarily disable or increase the timeout length would be awfully useful. Perhaps the upper right of the screen, or something similar to OS X's hot corners. -- Timeout is too short on dimming https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/33349 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 195125] [NEW] accessability enhancement: 5 min fix?
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gcalctool I just accidentally maximized gcalctool. Slightly suprisingly that I could maximize it. Then I noticed the buttons all got bigger to fill the space. Also cool. Surprising again, but actually perhaps handy. What if I'm (partially) blind? Then I noticed that the font size of the buttons was still the same (size 12?) as when the calculator was a normal size window. It would be helpful, I think, that since the buttons already scale to fill the container size, why not also have the character font scale to fill the button size? If this is /not/ a desirable action, this could be added as an accessibility option. Merits: - this should be an easy fix, perhaps 30 minutes for someone new to the code, or 5 minutes for a regular maintainer. - another bonus for gcalctool. (Accessibility) - if done properly, should not bloat the binaries since font information is already compiled in or shared. Cool. P.S. Sorry if there's extra information attached to this bug. [Bug 109709] Re: feisty - installed applets (invest, weather) on panel; they don't respond, and I can't remove them
This is directed at Sebastien Bacher, hoping that this adds some more info. I'm not clear on what was needed for the bug report, but I'll try to be responsive if asked a direct question. I can't comment on 7.10 Alpha 5, but with 7.04, the invest applet doesn't work. I'm not sure to what degree it doesn't work, because it /is/ responsive for me, but not at all useful as I understand how to use it: * I can add it to the top panel with right-click - Add to Panel. Doing that places an the Invest purple and white graph icon on top panel, with an associated darker gray area to it's right. * The only mouse action to which it seems to respond is a right-click on the darker gray area on the right. Doing that brings up a menu with Refresh, Preferences, About, and the three Move/Lock/Remove items. * Refresh appears to do nothing. * About brings up dialog box. Only thing of note here is that the link Invest Website points to http://raphael.slinckx.net/invest which gives a 404 error currently. Also, it's linked to the Preferences dialog such that if I open the About first, then Preferences, I have to close Preferences before I can interact with the About box again. Weird. * The Preferences Dialog is responsive for me. Clicking the Add button adds a new symbol with GOOG as the default. I can click on the newly added GOOG text and it allows me to change the symbol. The problem is that the data for each symbol is a flat-zero. Just clicking around now . . . it appears that I can edit all the datum points. Hrm. Perhaps a help dialog explaining what's going on would be helpful. If I knew what was going on, I'd offer to write the text for you . . . With my current guess as to what is supposed to happen and what the Invest applet is supposed to do, the problem seems to me to be that the applet is not collecting any data from the web.
