[Bug 1976131] [NEW] automatic timezone updates to wrong timezone

2022-05-27 Thread Krister Swenson
Public bug reported:

This is to mark a bug that I've reported upstream at:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/-/issues/1874

I am using GNOME 42.1 on Ubuntu 22.04. I leave the "Automatic Time Zone" on.
When traveling last week to San Diego, with a layover in Seattle, I noticed
that my timezone updated, but to the wrong timezone (MDT). I then got back on
the plane and arrived in San Diego. This time the timezone updated to PTD as it
should. I am now back in Seattle and the timezone has now updated from the
correct zone PTD to the wrong one MDT.

[Bug 1975435] Re: cannot choose item from right-click menu with touch

2022-05-23 Thread Krister Swenson
This is in both list and icon view. It was working before I updated to 22.04
from 21.10.
I see that you marked this a low importance, but it makes it extremely
difficult to use the computer, as I have to keep my keyboard nearby and
reattach it the tablet just to open a file, copy, paste, etc.

[Bug 1975435] [NEW] cannot choose item from right-click menu with touch

2022-05-22 Thread Krister Swenson
Public bug reported:

1. open nautilus
2. navigate to a directory with a non-directory file
3. long hold your finger on the file
4. try to choose something from the menu

The menu disappears but the chosen menu item is not activated, and
nothing happens.

This is a regression.

[Bug 1958012] [NEW] text in italics appears as boxes

2022-01-15 Thread Krister Swenson
Public bug reported:

An update to my system has broken italics support in gnome terminal. This makes
it hard to edit latex files with VIM, since VIM will show all text within
\emph{} as boxes.
If I type the following command at the prompt

=> echo -e "\e[3mfoo\e[23m"

I get three empty boxes where the letters "foo" should be. See the
attached screenshot.

[Bug 1948647] [NEW] Screeen recording via Ctrl+Alt+Shift+R creates empty webm file, orange circle persists

2021-10-25 Thread Krister Swenson
Public bug reported:

Running 21.10 and Gnome 40.4 the screen recording no longer works with
the Ctrl+Alt+Shift+R keystroke. A .webm file does appear in the Videos
folder but it is empty. The orange circle does appear in the upper
corner, but it will not go away.

Further Ctrl+Alt+Shift+R strokes do not make a new .webm file or remove
the orange circle.

[Bug 1876460] Re: No users appear in settings

2020-05-05 Thread Krister
This machine has gone through all successive upgrades of all versions
(not just LTS) since 2014. This is probably some incompatibility between
some version of the Unity and Gnome. Is it possible that Unity used this
as a way to hide users from the login screen? I believe I remember
having that as an option at some point.

appears now.

[Bug 1876460] Re: No users appear in settings

2020-05-02 Thread Krister
I did reboot before trying. Nothing changed with gnome-control-center.

I used "usermod" to change the uid.
Then I used "find / -user 501 -exec chown -h kms {} \;" to change any other
files in the filesystem.

[Bug 1799688] [NEW] New thumbnails for PDF files not shown

2018-10-24 Thread Krister
Public bug reported:

Since upgrade to 18.10 any new PDF file shows the red acrobat icon

- thumbnails for videos as images work as expected.

Gnome-shell will freeze at unexpected times when using the firefox

I've switched to chrome without having gnome-shell freeze on me.

Is there something particular about the way firefox 59 (Quantum)

[Bug 1752145] Re: system freeze after full screen video viewing with Xorg on ultrawide monitor

2018-03-15 Thread Krister
This bug is making it hard to work...
I just had the system freeze up on me again after less than 5 minutes.
This time, when doing ctrl-alt-F3 I got the strange snow-like screen depicted
in the attachement and none of the ctrl-alt terminals or GDM (at ctrl-alt-F1)
showed anything but snow!

[Bug 1752145] Re: system freeze after full screen video viewing with Xorg on ultrawide monitor

2018-03-15 Thread Krister
More symptoms:

I can kill gnome-shell with "kill -KILL" from a ctrl-alt terminal.
The GDM screen then appears as usual. Logging in again, however, seems to hang
on a blank purple screen.

The GDM screen appears normal but moving the mouse over the top-right
corner to activate the menu results in EXTREME lag. The menu is usable
but doesn't update for dozens of seconds after clicking on it.

Could this be a problem with XWayland?

I tried using Unity instead of gnome-shell and am experiencing the same
problem. Does this mean it's not a problem with mutter?
What is worse, is that this problems seems to crop up every day or so during

never watched a video.

Could you please tell me details on how to get the best debug

Yes. I verified that using the kernel 4.15 does not fix the problem.

[Bug 1752145] [NEW] system freeze after full screen video viewing with Xorg on ultrawide monitor

2018-02-27 Thread Krister
Public bug reported:

1. open a video (either youtube or totem)
2. put it in full screen.
3. wait

Eventually (within minutes) the system will freeze in one of 2 ways.

1. There will be only blackness with no response ( even
unresponsive).

2. There will be snow that shifts with keyboard and mouse interaction
(see photo).

[Bug 1749975] Re: Flickering screen with ultra-wide monitor in Wayland mode

2018-02-27 Thread Krister
I booted this image and no longer experience the issue.

I'm not sure if the default for this image is Wayland or Xorg...
the command "echo $DESKTOP_SESSION" gave "ubuntu".

The other thing is that I installed the packages linux-headers-4.15.0-10 and
linux-image-4.15.0-10-generic on my 17.10 installation and still see have the
flicker...
so it's not the kernel that fixes the issue.

[Bug 1732704] Re: Window opened with shortcut custom global shortcut does not get focus

2018-02-22 Thread Krister
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected artful

** Description changed:

I have a custom shortcut set to open google translate in firefox. If
I'm using firefox already, this key combination will open a new firefox
window with translate, yet it will not have focus.

This is problematic in that I must then type to focus the
  window.

  Steps:

  1. create a custom shortcut to the command "/usr/bin/firefox --browser
  --new-window translate.google.com"

  2. open a firefox window.
  3. type the shortcut.
  4. see that the window does not have focus (even if it may appear in front!)

2. clear GDM screen by swiping up.

There is a video flicker now when I interact with computer.
Usually small, but can cover many different UI elements.

This does not happen if I use the X backend instead of wayland.

[Bug 1732704] [NEW] firefox window opened with shortcut custom global shortcut does not get focus

2017-11-16 Thread Krister
Public bug reported:

I have a custom shortcut set to open google translate in firefox. If
I'm using firefox already, this key combination will open a new firefox
window with translate, yet it will not have focus.

This is problematic in that I must then type to focus the
window.

Steps:

1. create a custom shortcut to the command "/usr/bin/firefox --browser
--new-window translate.google.com"

2. open a firefox window.
3. type the shortcut.
4. see that the window does not have focus (even if it may appear in front!)

[Bug 1660353] [NEW] thumbnails disappear when scrolling in thumbnails pane

2017-01-30 Thread Krister
Public bug reported:

1. open a many-page (at least 15 pages) document
2. open the thumbnails pane
3. click on a thumbnail
4. scroll up and down until the thumbnails (including outlines disappear)

Obviously, we expect for the thumbnails to stay visible. To make then
visible again, move the pointer to the main document window, and then
back to the thumbnails. Each one will reappear as you move the pointer
over it.

This is not the same as bug 1369028 as evince does not hang.
This is not the same as bug 1629633, as there is still a thumbnail border for
that document, and under no circumstances will the thumbnail appear.

[Bug 1596513] Re: "save to" dialogue no longer has recent folders list

2016-06-28 Thread Krister
The use case I point to is actually the Firefox "save to" dialogue.

Now that I look at it...
this seems to be a problem with firefox. The other applications do include
the recent files dialogue.

Sorry for the false alarm.

[Bug 1364940] [NEW] highlighted find entry does not correspond to current page

2014-09-03 Thread Krister
Public bug reported:

1. open a PDF

2. open the find functionality (ctrl-f).

3. type a common word like the.

4. click on one of the matches on the left.

5. move to another page with the on it.

6. click the find next button (or ctrl-g).

EXPECTED:
one of the thes on the current page is highlighted.

ACTUAL:
the next the on the original page is highlighted.

COMMENTARY:
The problem is that I often use the find so that all the occurences of a word
are highlighted. I find a particular occurrence and then scroll while looking
at the context. There is no quick and easy way to know which match I am
currently looking at.

[Bug 890903] Re: terminal contents don't refresh/update

Some more notes:
- you don't need to ssh to get this behavior. it is the only way i know of to
consistently reproduce the problem, however.

- if you change desktops and come back to the terminal, then the

[Bug 769184] [NEW] screen locks after suspend despite gconf-editor setting

2011-04-22 Thread Krister
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

1. In gconf-editor, uncheck the box /apps/gnome-power-manager/lock_on_suspend.
2. use the power button in the upper corner of unity to choose suspend.
3. turn the computer back on.

See that the setting is ignored, i.e. the screen is locked.

Note that if you use the Shut Down the Computer dialogue instead to
suspend the machine, it is not locked upon resuming.

[Bug 68172] [disks-admin] Free space size line is incorrect.

2006-10-27 Thread Krister Svanlund
Public bug reported:

When im looking at my partitions using disks-admin one of my free spaces
have the size of 17592186044416,00 GiB, which is about 78 times the
total space of the harddrive.

This is what it looks like: http://img156.imageshack.usFree space size
line is incorrect/my.php?image=screenshotdisksmanagerxf5.png

The screenshot is taken running live version of Ubuntu Dapper Drake
64-bit but even when i have had ubuntu installed its the same.

Hmm... When i tried controlling how big the freespace would be i added
the other partitions and free spaces together and got 64,64 I find it
kind of strange on a harddrive thats only 57.27 GiB.

Re: [Bug 68172] Re: [disks-admin] Free space size line is incorrect.

2006-10-27 Thread Krister Svanlund
It was the version that came with the dapper drake live cd

On 10/26/06, James Love [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Are you using the version that came with Dapper? (2.14.0), as the latest
version is 2.15.5. If the bug is reproducable on that version then the
bug can be floated upstream to Gnome.
