[Bug 397980] Re: evolution deletes all e-mails in a folder after renaming

2010-03-05 Thread MartinE
I can confirm this bug in Evolution 2.26.1 on Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope.
The following procedure consistently triggers the bug:

(1) Create a subfolder in Inbox
(2) Copy several messages into the new folder
(3) Rename the folder
(4) Delete a single email from the renamed folder

Expected Result:
One email has been deleted from the folder.

Observed Result:
All except one email have been deleted from the folder.
The remaining email is usually the newest one. Note that
the emails are simply gone, they don't show up in Trash
either.

Importance:
CRITICAL.

rant
I lost 7.5 years of university-related emails yesterday, due to
this bug. Gone. Everything. Because I decided to rename a
folder. I've never been so happy that I keep regular backups.

There's no way that this bug is of medium importance. This
stuff is simply not supposed to happen.

[Bug 397980] Re: evolution deletes all e-mails in a folder after renaming

2010-03-05 Thread MartinE
Further Information:
If you do the following:
(1) Copy several emails into a subfolder of Inbox
(2) Rename the folder
(3) Chose File-Backup Settings
(4) Restart Evolution

At this point, the emails are still there. Now,

(5) Chose File-Restore Settings and restore from
the archive created in step (4)
(6) Delete a single email from the renamed folder

Result:
This will trigger the bug and delete all but the newest
email from the folder.

Conclusion:
Whatever triggers this behaviour gets saved with your
backup archive! Bad! Very Bad!

[Bug 397980] Re: evolution deletes all e-mails in a folder after renaming

2010-03-05 Thread MartinE
Workaround: Dont rename your folders, but:
(1) create a new folder with the new name
(2) copy the emails from the old folder to the new one
(3) delete the old folder

This procedure seems to be useful for repairing affected folders
(i.e., folders that have recently been renamed and are now subject to this bug).

[Bug 429474] [NEW] GIMP segfaults on startup

2009-09-14 Thread MartinE
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gimp

Release: Ubuntu 9.04 for 64 bit architectures.

Hardware: Intel Core Duo, 2.4 Ghz

Version: gimp_2.6.6-0ubuntu1

Frequency: Happens every time.

Expected Behaviour: I tell Gimp to start. Gimp starts.

Observed Behaviour: I tell Gimp to start. Gimp segfaults.
The only output I get is this:

(gimp:9844): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_bookmark_file_load_from_data: assertion
`length != 0' failed

(script-fu:10030): LibGimpBase-WARNING **: script-fu: gimp_wire_read(): error

reinstalling Gimp. After that, Gimp started correctly - once. Then it went back
to segfaulting.

[Bug 232538] Re: hardy gnome: Cancelling quit dialog won't lightens screen back

2008-08-18 Thread MartinE
I can confirm this bug using the nvidia-glx-new driver an compiz window
manager. It seems to be a repainting problem; I usually switch to
workspace/viewport 2 and back to workspace/viewport 1, which repaints
the screen. Few controls (e.g. the desktop switcher applet) are
repainted by hovering the mouse over them.

[Bug 216268] Re: totem crashes when leaving fullscreen mode

2008-07-13 Thread MartinE
Thanks a lot, Claudiu!

That does indeed seem to work. I'll try this for 2-3 days, and report
back unless I run into a crash again earlier.

I wonder though, was the BackingStore option enabled by default on
Ubuntu Hardy? I'd nerver heard of it before, so I don't think I enabled
it manually. Whatever.

2008-04-14 Thread MartinE
The information at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash , or
more specifically at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace , is not
applicable, since gdm is killed when the crash occurs. Once X has

How do I obtain a backtrace under these circumstances? I will try to
obtain valgrind and strace logs, if these are of any help to you. Any

[Bug 216268] [NEW] totem crashes when leaving fullscreen mode

2008-04-12 Thread MartinE
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

On Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) prerelease, totem consistently crashes X
when I try to leave fullscreen mode. Fullscreen works perfectly, but
leaving fullscreen mode breaks the X server. Not always, but about every
third time. I'm using the proprietary nvidia-glx-new driver, and have
compiz enabled. So far, I haven't noticed this bug with metacity. I'm
not sure if this really is a bug in totem, or rather nvidia-glx-new, or
compiz. I'm filing a bug against totem for now.

If you need further information, please tell me how to obtain it. I have
to restart the entire system when the problem appears.

Package versions:

[Bug 97520] Re: In Feisty Fawn, Gaim fails to autoconnect to ICQ account on startup

2007-04-02 Thread MartinE
Removing the packages network-manager and network-manager-gnome is a
workaround for this bug. It's also a workaround for bug #97557,
evolution not remembering offline/online mode from the last session. I
don't consider it a fix for either bug.

System Monitor says the network-manager process was sleeping. I'm not
entirely sure what you mean by is it connected. I had a working dial-
up connection (an ISDN connection using CAPI, actually) but it seems
NetworkManager doesn't see it.

No, removing the packages network-manager and network-manager-gnome
is a workaround for this bug. It's also a workaround for bug #97520,
Gaim being unable to autoconnect on startup. Of course it's not a fix
for either bug.

I'm using a Fritz!X USB ISDN card, with CAPI4Linux and the fxusb driver,
if that is of any interest to you. I'm not using the network-manager
applet, because it is of no use to me. I cant use it to start a
connection and it doesn't see active connections, anyway. I manually
connect using pon and poff (because of bug #85469, dial-on-demand not
working in Feisty). System Monitor says that the network-manager process
was sleeping when this bug occured to me.

[Bug 97520] In Feisty Fawn, Gaim fails to autoconnect to ICQ account on startup

2007-03-28 Thread MartinE
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gaim

I have configured Gaim to autoconnect to my ICQ account on startup. But
the attempt to connect never succeeds: Gaim says Waiting for network
connection in the statusbar (I'm using the german translation, so I'm
not sure about the exact english wording), and nothing else happens.

However, when I select Accounts - *My ICQ account* - Deactivate to
stop the connection attempt, and then select Accounts - Activate
account - *My ICQ account, the connection attempt succeeds without any
trouble.

Steps to reproduce: See above, happens every time.

[Bug 41458] Re: No DVD icon in Places Computer and Desktop when mounted

2007-03-28 Thread MartinE
I can confirm that this bug is still present in Feisty Fawn.
Some observations:

(1) When the DVD drive is empty and the lid is closed, a DVD icon is
shown in Computer. This is expected behaviour. But there's no way to
open the lid from Computer: Right clicking on DVD drive and
selecting eject yields a dialog box that tells me Unable to mount
media. There is probably no media in the drive. Sure there isn't. But I
didn't want to mount the drive, i wanted to open the lid. eject
/dev/hdc works. So does hardware eject.

(2) When I insert a movie DVD and close the lid, the DVD is automatically
played with Totem. Again, this is expected bahaviour. However, the DVD icon in
Computer disappears.
Moreover, hardware eject does no longer work, presumably because there is a
mounted DVD in the drive. So, no other way to reopen the lid but eject
/dev/hdc.

(3) In case 2, when I double click on the CD-RW drive icon in Computer
(my CD-RW drive is different from my DVD drive), the DVD drive icon
reappears. However, both the eject and mount options in the DVD
icons's context menu yield the same dialog box mentioned above: Unable
to mount media. There is probably no media in the drive. Heck, sure
there's a media in the drive, Totem is currently playing it (however,
exiting Totem before trying this doesn't change anything). But again, I
didn't want to mount it, I wanted to eject it. Hardware eject still
doesn't work, like in case 2. So, I'm still stuck with eject /dev/hdc
to reopen the lid.

(4) In each case, there is no DVD icon on the desktop. This is expected
in case 1, and partly so in case 2, because there is no icon in
Computer either (but there should be, both in Computer and on the
desktop). But even in case 3, after double clicking on the CD-RW icon,
when the DVD icon reappeared in Computer, there is still no DVD icon
on my Desktop.

It seems that nautilus' behaviour concerning when to show a DVD icon in
Computer, or on the desktop, and its behaviour concerning the eject option
of the DVD icon's context menu (when it is shown at all), are utterly broken on
my machine.

[Bug 85461] No shutdown option in Feisty's system menu despite /apps/panel/global/upstream_session being set to true

2007-02-15 Thread MartinE
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-menus

I dislike Ubuntu's logout dialog and use GNOME's logout dialogs by
setting the GConf-key /apps/panel/global/upstream-session to true.
This has the effect that I have two entries in GNOME's System menu: A
Logout entry and a Shutdown entry. I don't know the exact english
titles of these menu entries since I'm using the german language pack.

This has always worked well, but some days ago, after an update to
Feisty, the Shutdown menu item is no longer displayed, even though the
GConf-key is still set to true. To shutdown/restart the machine, I have
to use the Log out item first and then use the shutdown/restart option
in GDM. This is clearly subotimal to the former state.

I'm not absolutely sure which update removed the Shutdown item, but i
think it was the same one that replaced the Preferences and
Administration menu items with the Control Center item.

By the way, the same thing happens when using XGL in Ubuntu Edgy: No
Shutdown option in the menu. I don't know if the two observations have
a common cause. I don't use XGL in Feisty, so the bug outlined above
seems unrelated to XGL.
