[Bug 2021407] [NEW] maximized evince shadowed by dock

2023-05-27 Thread Matt Wette
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 23.04, w/ wayland, evince 44.1, all updates applied to date
(05/27/2023)

I'm not sure what causes it but occasionally I find my maximized evince has
expanded under the dock.
My current workaround is to un-maximize (i.e., double-click titlebar), then
maximime (double-click titlebar).

I typically keep a maximized evince of certain document open all the
time. This hiccup occurs maybe once or twice a day.

This occured with 22.10 also, btw.

[Bug 1966921] Re: Display freezes after entering password from login screen

2022-03-30 Thread Matt Austin
Thanks Daniel.

You were right about the extensions, thank you for the suggestion.

It appears to be caused by the "Nothing to Say" gnome extension. I
uninstalled this, and can now use the wayland session again.

It looks like it's probably the same issue as reported here (by a user running
20.04):
https://github.com/wbolster/nothing-to-say/issues/49

[Bug 1966921] [NEW] Display freezes after entering password from login screen

2022-03-29 Thread Matt Austin
Public bug reported:

The display freezes with the same background colour as the login screen.
The mouse pointer no longer moves. I was unable to change to another VT

make the laptop respond by triggering a shutdown.

Thanks for getting back to me. I have never heard of gnome-remote-

Yes, I meant the minimal install from ubiquity.

I would consider this lack of knowledge on my part but I will update the
threads on askubuntu and reddit with the solution as I'm sure others
will encounter the same.

[Bug 1950461] [NEW] Installing vino does not expose the screen sharing slider in Gnome Control Center

2021-11-10 Thread Matt Dale
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 21.10 - minimal install on a fresh machine

apt install vino

Open the gnome settings dialog and go to the Sharing tab. I would expect
to see the screen sharing slider but it is not there.

Searching around I found a suggestion to use Ubunutu with Xorg but this
makes no difference.

This behaviour is also present in 21.04.

I have put gnome-control-center as the package at fault as this is
ultimately where I observe the issue but it may be that during the
install of vino makes the gnome configuration change and this step is
missed.

I have enquired on askubuntu and reddit but have not received a response
so decided to report this

gnome-control-center 1:40.0-1ubuntu5 is installed
vino 3.22.0-6ubuntu3

Forgot to mention, menus in gnome-shell itself (top bar, dock, and other
panels) do not suffer from this delay. They close immediately. This
ticket is associated with gnome-shell, but the way the original author
describes it, the shell isn't affected for them either: "This occurs in
GNOME, GNOME applications and also for non-GNOME applications such as
Firefox and Chrome."

[Bug 1681290] Re: UI experiences delay when menu / tooltip disappears

2020-10-05 Thread Matt
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1181666 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1181666

I'm having this problem years later in Gnome 3.36.3, Ubuntu 20.04.1. It
also happened in 19.x. I don't think it's a duplicate of #1181666
because that states some interaction is still possible. In this issue,
the whole ui is stuck. Windows, shell, clock, video that's playing,
everything but the mouse cursor. Done a lot of searching for a newer
ticket but none is a dead ringer like this.

The problem develops a while (hours?) after a fresh start and seems to
get more exaggerated as time passes. On a larger scope, a fresh install
is free of this problem at first, and then it develops after days/weeks
of normal use. Had a hunch that it started after installing a particular
package, but I can't remember what it was for the life of me. Clutter?
Wxwidgets? Just a hunch anyway.

Closing of menus, tooltips, and to some degree open/save dialogs are
delayed up to many seconds. This makes interacting with file managers
and web pages infuriating. I have interface sounds on (smooth soundset,
which includes menu actions) and noticed that opening a window menu and
scrubbing the mouse over the other top level items (file, edit, etc.)
still produces sound while this is going on, and the total wait time
until the display unsticks is compounded with every one. ***To me this
says it's not "no click" so much as "can't see".*** After zigging back
and forth I can be waiting a minute or more, meanwhile I can still hear
music playing, etc.

Regarding comment 2, I've not yet tried deleting my gnome settings
because I didn't want to gum things up, but regardless I'm not sure how
that implies this should be closed or is invalid. Gnome shouldn't be
doing things to that file that interfere with its own operation, right?
Again, this is from everyday use, and I've not been messing around in
things.

[Bug 1874567] Re: [nvidia] Rotating secondary monitor to portrait fails, results in landscape

2020-07-25 Thread Matt Austin
Thank you for fixing this bug. Installing mutter 3.36.4-0ubuntu0.20.04.1
and libmutter 3.36.4-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 from focal-proposed has resolved
this issue for me.

Note: The updated libmutter from focal-proposed also had to be
explicitly installed by me, as it was not automatically pulled in when
updating mutter.

Steps:
1) Enabled focal-proposed
2) apt update
3) apt install mutter libmutter
4) Disabled focal-proposed
5) Removed ~/.config/monitors.xml and ~gdm/config/monitors.xml
6) Rebooted
7) After login, I successfully applied my desired monitor configuration
(changing the primary monitor and setting other monitor to portrait
orientation).

Side notes:
1) I still had to copy ~/.config/monitors.xml to ~gdm/.config/monitors.xml for
the correct primary monitor and orientation to be set on the login screen.
2) After applying the display configuration, the icons in the top-right of the
gnome panel appeared blured (network/bluetooth). This was resolved by applying
150% fractional scaling and then applying 100% scaling again in the gnome
display settings. I haven't had time to reproduce this to know if it's a
one-off or ongoing bug.

Thank you Simon Déziel! That worked for me too.

I was all set to give up on ubuntu 20 because having a working
evolution-ews is a deal-breaker for me.

I wonder why the linked duplicate thread does not also contain your fix.

[Bug 1853094] [NEW] Screen tearing in xorg gnome session on Latitude 7480 with WD19TB Thunderbolt dock

2019-11-18 Thread Matt Austin
Public bug reported:

I have the WD19TB Thunderbolt dock connected to a Dell Latitude 7480
laptop with two external displays. The laptop itself is closed (internal
display is not used).

In a gnome xorg session, there is severe tearing on parts of the screen
when dragging windows or scrolling content.

Under a wayland session there is no screen tearing, but I have keyboard
key repetition problems which make this mostly unusable day-to-day
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/1849405).

I can supply short phone videos of tearing occurring on the screens if
required.

[Bug 1849405] Re: Repeated keypresses from bluetooth keyboard

2019-10-30 Thread Matt Austin
I've now been using an Xorg session rather than Wayland and haven't seen
the repeated keys issue. I do get some very nasty screen tearing when
scrolling (e.g. websites) on Xorg however, so ideally I'd like to
continue using Wayland.

Does that mean that this is likely a mutter bug, rather than bluez?

[Bug 1826604] Re: Extension causes saving files to desktop to be slow

2019-07-20 Thread Matt Lu
On my systems, this bug also affected saving files from firefox, regardless of
the destination!
This is not about the time for downloading, I'm talking about ~1 kB files.

On one machine, it took 4-5 seconds saving such files to any location
(not just the desktop), on the other it took over 2 seconds. After
renaming the extension, saving from firefox happened instantly again on
both machines.

[Bug 1802680] [NEW] Adding keyboard layout broken without logout

2018-11-10 Thread Matt Arsenault
Public bug reported:

On my system, the default keyboard layout is English (Colemak). I have
English (US) as a secondary keyboard layout.

I attempted to add Russian, which worked. However, when I switched to it
using Super+Space, input was really done in Qwerty. Both Russian and
English (US) were effectively qwerty options until I logged out and back
in.

[Bug 1797782] [NEW] evince immediately seg faults

2018-10-14 Thread Matt Sienko
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS
Release:18.04

evince:
  Installed: 3.28.2-1
  Candidate: 3.28.2-1
  Version table:
 *** 3.28.2-1 500
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Expected Behavior: evince opens and displays PDF document.

What Happened: When launching evince, it crashes immediately with a
segmentation fault. This happens every time. I have tried opening
multiple PDF documents both from the command line and file browser.
Launching evince from the command line without specifying a file also
crashes. The PDF documents open fine in xpdf.

[Bug 1778361] Re: The Processes tab only displays the current user's processes

2018-09-29 Thread Matt
This appears to be specific to packaging as a "snap" without appropriate
privileges
Removing the default snap install and installing gnome-system-monitor via apt
shows all processes, including root, as per expected operation

[Bug 1766137] Re: [regression] Password accepted but login fails (blank purple screen and mouse pointer only)

2018-09-08 Thread matt scott
9-8-018 fresh install with updates .. some user switches work, some
don't logout is also crashing with irresponsive black screen. When the
user switch fails, the description is slightly different from above. If
the mouse pointer comes in at lower right, the user switch works. If it
comes in upper right, then the mouse fails, alt-F1 etc. all do nothing,
and rather than blank purple screen, I have what appears to be a
successful login, but the system is completely non-responsive.

[Bug 1775631] [NEW] Please update to latest xorgxrdp-0.2.3

2018-06-07 Thread Matt Burt
Public bug reported:

The version of xrdp in Universe xrdp-0.9.5-2 contains xorgxrdp-0.2.2.

This version of xorgxrdp does not implement gamma ramps in a sensible
manner, and doesn't work well with the GNOME 3 desktop. This was
reported on the xorgxrdp github site as issue #111, fixed in 0.2.3 :-

https://github.com/neutrinolabs/xorgxrdp/pull/111

Users are reporting problems with 18.04 and xrdp on the xrdp site which
I believe are related to this:-

https://github.com/neutrinolabs/xrdp/issues/1122
https://github.com/neutrinolabs/xrdp/issues/1128

You may also wish to consider an upgrade to xrdp-0.9.6 as this has some
useful bugfixes in too.

Similar to earlier-reported. The server went down while this client was

[Bug 1741839] Re: gdm3 lock screen/gnome-shell freeze after opening laptop lid

2018-02-21 Thread Matt
I too am affected by this bug.

It is intermittent for me, and not immediately reproducible, however I
was able to reproduce it and grab some journalctl lines via SSH if it is
at all helpful.

I should also add that I have set gnome-tweak-tool -> Power -> Suspend
when laptop lid closed -> Off

And I have also tried killing the ignore-lid-switch-tweak process in
hopes it may have been related however it had no immediate affect.

journalctl1.txt shows the issue occuring, black screen, no keyboard/mouse
response.
journalctl2.txt shows opening and closing the lid during this "frozen"
condition.

I was then able to recover from this condition via ssh by doing a pkill
-HUP gnome-shell, which was showing 100% cpu usage.

I was presented with the login screen which after logging in took me to
the lock screen since I had already been logged in and locked the screen
before I closed the lid.

Hope that's helpful.

[Bug 1616332] Re: gnome-software using hundreds of MB of memory when not in use

2018-01-08 Thread Matt Lu
Just happened to me, too (17.10 x64). RAM usage got up, system became
sluggish then stopped responding completely, only MagicSysRQ got me out.
After restart, the problem has left an ugly gift: syslog has grown to
6,4 GB (I won't upload that). tail syslog (repeating for at least last
100 lines):

'index_ + length <= array->len' failed

Sometimes, the error messages overlapped, don't know if this is normal:

[Bug 1712895] [NEW] Menu entries in right-click menu for left panel item not clickable

2017-08-24 Thread Matt Summers
Public bug reported:

Seen in artful alpha.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open Files (nautilus)
2. Right-click an item in the left panel such as "Desktop"
3. Observe right-click menu has appeared.
4. Click on a menu item such as "Properties"
5. menu disappears, nothing happens.

What I expected:
Desktop properties window should appear.

Observations:
* Menu items do not react to hover-over, do not act like regular menu items.
* Seen in ambiance theme, but also tried with adwaita and observed no
difference.

[Bug 1711439] [NEW] Mutter crashing when workspace count is changed

2017-08-17 Thread Matt Summers
Public bug reported:

Fresh install of Artful nightly from earlier this week.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open gnome-tweak-tool
2. Browse to workspaces pane
3. Change workspaces count (for me at this time 2->3->2)
4. I am returned to gdm login.

Journal logging (EDIT: shortened as attached anyway):

[Bug 1636862] [NEW] Shutdown hangs with active iscsi sessions

2016-10-26 Thread Matt Schulte
Public bug reported:

This is a duplicate of the bug listed here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1569925 for 16.04.

That bug was automatically closed though the problem still persists. I
am opening this bug for 16.10 in hopes that it will catch somebody's
attention.

I have 4 servers running the latest 16.10 updates.

Each server is connected to NetApp storage using iscsi software
initiator. There are a total of 56 volumes spread across two NetApp
arrays. Each volume has 4 paths available to it which are being managed
by device mapper.

While logged into the iscsi sessions all I have to do is reboot the
server and I get a hang.

I see a message that says:

  "Reached target Shutdown"

followed by

"systemd-shutdown[1]: Failed to finalize DM devices, ignoring"

and then I see 8 lines that say:

"connection1:0: ping timeout of 5 secs expired, recv timeout 5, last rx
4311815***, last ping 43118164**, now 4311817***"
"connection2:0: ping timeout of 5 secs expired, recv timeout 5, last rx

[Bug 1453655] Re: desktop icons disappear on Ubuntu 15.04 when clicking Open Dropbox folder

2016-09-03 Thread Matt
I have very recently made a clean install of 16.04LTS with what appears
to be the exact same issue and also seems related to Dropbox. Open
Dropbox folder and desktop icons disappear. They are still in the System
generated Desktop folder in Home but if I attempt to move them to the
desktop the action will not be allowed. The only solution is as stated
before, to log out then back in.

Just wondering if the fix in 15.0 has been migrated to 16.04 for fixes
and updates? I used Synaptic to see if the 15.0 fix was there under Pre-
Release for Nautilus but I don't see anything that looks correct.

Thanks.

[Bug 1278437] Re: can't move link type .desktop files around on desktop

2016-05-03 Thread Matt Billx
I am having the same problems reported in this thread. Does anyone find
this humorous and ironic:

Ubuntu.com takes us to a website titled "The leading OS for PC, tablet,
phone and cloud | Ubuntu"... and (despite the websites self-acclamation)
dragging a link to that location on our desktop-workspace produces a
link which is (for all practical purposes) useless as a desktop-link.

Sure, a link is created entitled "Link to The leading OS for PC,
tablet, phone and cloud | Ubuntu" BUT! That link cannot be moved, and
any attempt to do so merely creates a copy of the file, meaning we
cannot organize our workspace, thereby rendering our Ubuntu desktop
disorganized/unorganizable for internet projects.

Please tell me how Ubuntu claims to be "The leading OS for PC, tablet,
phone and cloud | Ubuntu" when this basic feature of organizing one's
"desktop" is practically unusable.

[Bug 1565969] [NEW] Udev rule causes automatic incorrect unmount of dm device

2016-04-04 Thread Matt Schulte
Public bug reported:

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd'

Description: Ubuntu Xenial Xerus (development b ranch)
Release: 16.04

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
pkgname'

systemd:
  Installed: 229-3ubuntu1
  Candidate: 229-3ubuntu1

3) What you expected to happen

I am testing our E-Series Netapp storage array and the ability of the
server to failover IO to the secondary path. I pull a cable and allow
DM-MP to fail the path and route IO down the other path. I then replug
the cable and repeat for the other path.

I expect that the failover to occur and for the mount points to stay
mounted through the operation.

4) What happened instead

I see in the system log that during the test systemd tries to perform an
unmount operation on the mountpoint of the dm-device(s) that have lost
an underlying path. The unmount fails, I assume because there is active
IO at the time. However it should not be attempted in the first place.

I believe this is related to the bug that we discovered in RHEL and SLES
that can be seen in this redhat commit:

https://github.com/lnykryn/systemd-
rhel/commit/d77ced281c6d1f47b5dfc3abff6817d8f5756af9

Our testing of RHEL seems to indicate that this patch resolved our
problem.

[Bug 1269838] Re: gnome-session.log takes 8 GB in a few hours

2014-10-27 Thread Matt Falcon
Also ran across this bug. It came up on my VMware system under a Windows
10 host, seemingly due to an issue with VMWare kicking network in and
out very, very rapidly. Constant disk and CPU activity perked up as soon
as I connected the VM to the host bridge, and the network is
disconnected message came and went. The activity never stopped, I fell
asleep (... yep), and when I came back to it, a new message about low
disk space was there as well. I examined the drive and found this log
file exploded to 11 GB. Googled it, found this thread.

VMWare apparently has an issue with networking in Windows 10, where
bridged networking no longer works at all even with the VMWare Bridge
networking service added back after the upgrade, and with VMWare
repaired with the latest installer. It's a pretty clean system but it's
been upgraded from one version to the next as Ubuntu's been updated over
the years.

In the interest of bug-squishing, I compressed the 11GB file down to
11MB (yay, 7-Zip!), and posted it here. I'm primarily a Windows guy with
fair knowledge of Linux, so hopefully this isn't a hassle to open...
Dropbox has become too unreliable to use for hosting files, so I've got
to post it on my OneDrive.

http://1drv.ms/1pPNTjH

Hope this helps!

[Bug 1269838] Re: gnome-session.log takes 8 GB in a few hours

2014-10-27 Thread Matt Falcon
As it turns out... reading my own log... it had nothing to do with the
network popup. Wow. It's all about Moonshine S-Off, a rather poorly
written (and very user-hostile) program that tries (and often fails) to
exploit an S-Off onto an HTC phone. Rumrunner actually worked properly,
anyway, with a better sense of humor on the same basic code. :P

Seems like it logs every line that goes onto a terminal - even if that
line is just overwriting the previous one. And that's what blows up the
log file.

[Bug 1269838] Re: gnome-session.log takes 8 GB in a few hours

2014-10-27 Thread Matt Falcon
God, I wish I could edit replies. A little more analysis, and it seems
like I've thrown a little more of the puzzle together.

When I tried running it, I tried opening it directly from the file
browser. That did nothing. But, apparently, it did actually do
something - it ran in the background! My guess is that it got launched
in a way that it hides the terminal output and expects a GUI to be
created. So it kept feeding it blank lines each time it tries prompting
for input. Hence, the Type 'Yes' or 'No', (Yes/No) repeating over
and over until it filled the hard drive, as well as the high CPU and
disk activity around the time I was trying to run it.

Also explains why I didn't have this issue when I tried fixing the
networking problem later - the log file was stable after I deleted it
and rebooted.

So, maybe this is caused by a terminal program being launched with the
file manager trying to open it as a GUI program instead of as a terminal
program, then constantly sending it blank responses for each input, and
the program rejects those responses in an infinite loop!

[Bug 1313430] Re: Crashes on Ubuntu 14.04 when trying to connect to iPod

2014-10-07 Thread Matt Plavcan
[WORKAROUND]: Wiping all content off of the device (Artwork, songs,
playlists, database) using file operations in Ubuntu appears to put the
iPod into a state where it can again sync via. So there is some
interaction in the content being read from the device and the software
bug causing the crash.

However, as the conditions which cause the crash are still unknown, it
is impossible to say whether a device that works after manual wipe
will again start to manifest problems.

Did not try to Factory Reset the iPod with iTunes or use the iPod's
Erase all Content options, but suspect that they would have the same
effect as a manual wipe.

As workarounds go, this is pretty much the nuclear option, but it does
bypass the bug for an indefinite period.

2014-06-20 Thread Matt Plavcan
I'm also observing Banshee crashing when either the iPod is plugged in, or if
launch when iPod is already docked.
   Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit
   iPod Touch 2nd Gen 32GB, iOS4.1

Prior to upgrade (13.10 64-bit):
Banshee crashed if iPod was already docked when it was launched; it did not
crash when iPod plugged in after launch.

Suspect this might be a libgtkpod issue.

[Bug 1297773] [NEW] WebDAV moves files using PUT and DELETE instead of MOVE

2014-03-26 Thread Matt Ward
Public bug reported:

lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 13.04
Release:13.04
(I'm told this also happens on 12.04)

WebDAV moves files using PUT and DELETE instead of MOVE

How to reproduce the issue:

Pre-requisites:
  - WebDAV server.
  - Packet sniffer (e.g. Wireshark) or set appropriate log levels in the WebDAV
server to observe HTTP requests being made.

Mount a webdav server:
1. open a nautilus window
2. use menu files connect to server
3. enter the server address (e.g. dav://localhost:8080/alfresco/webdav) and
connect

Create two folders: test-move1 and test-move2.

Create a text file in test-move1 named move.txt with some short text in
it.

Select the file in nautilus and type Ctrl-X.

Navigate to test-move2.

Move the file by typing Ctrl-V.

Observed behaviour:
A multi-request move operation is executed.

GET on test-move1/move.txt
HEAD on test-move2/move.txt
PUT on test-move2/move.txt
...
DELETE on test-move1/move.txt

Expected behaviour:
The move is performed using the WebDAV MOVE command.

By using GET, PUT, DELETE instead of a single MOVE:
- The client must wait for the entire file to be downloaded before it can be
uploaded to the new location. By using MOVE the entire operation may be highly
optimized and performed only on the server.
- Any associated metadata (including versioning) for the file is lost - since
we are in fact creating a new file and deleting the old one.
- There is a lack of atomicity and potentially, data integrity. What would
happen if an update is made to test-move1/move.txt just before the DELETE
happens?

[Bug 1276661] [NEW] EOG - Image Viewer freezes when changing extension

2014-02-05 Thread Matt 6:27
Public bug reported:

13.10 64bit Ubuntu; EOG ver 3.8.2-1ubuntu1

I frequently change image formats from .png to .jpg for compatibility
with other systems. Since 13.10, whenever I attempt to rename an image
that is open in Image Viewer (eog) using save as, the new file is
properly saved, but the image viewer window freezes and the Save
window above it remains open and cannot be closed. The only way out is
to force close/kill Image Viewer, after which the Save window closes as
well. This freeze is repeatable.

[Bug 660490] Re: Shotwell: Change picture size?

2013-05-25 Thread Matt Hanyok
Any chance this is actually going to get added? I think with shotwell
being the default image editing application in Ubuntu there should be a
user friendly method of resizing - as simple as edit, resize, enter
percentage or pixel value.

I realize you can go through the save as menu but that's not intuitive
at all. I've been using Ubuntu for years and just assumed Shotwell
lacked the capbility to resize images entirely, it was only now I
decided to google it and discovered that this was not, in fact, the
case.

[Bug 861493] Re: evince doesn't print duplex on duplex-able printers

2013-05-10 Thread Matt 6:27
My experience is similar, but have just learned something that may help
narrow the issue. It appears the duplexing will not work whenever I use
a media that is borderless (e.g., 8 1/2 x 11 borderless doesn't print
on both sides). When I change the setting for the same PDF to print
standard US Letter size, the duplexing works and it prints double-sided.
I can duplicate this effect. Hope this helps in the debugging.
