[Bug 322271] Re: Sorting by name doesn't work well with digits or special chars

2019-04-29 Thread Mitch Butler
I'm not sure if this is the same bug or a different one. I am using ubuntu
14.04 LTS. I have a directory containing other directories. They sort correctly
with "ls -l". But they show up in Nautilus as:
20190428_96a11107 <- wrong order
20190428_1271f6a8
20190428_4314187e
20190428_a4b67026
20190428_a9637c2a
20190428_bd912fd3
20190428_c7b6ee8a <- wrong order
20190428_c408cf3c
20190428_ec90884e

I am not aware of any hidden special characters in the names. It is easy to
reproduce on my machine. Just go to an empty folder and do:
touch 20190428_1271f6a8
touch 20190428_4314187e
touch 20190428_96a11107
touch 20190428_a4b67026
touch 20190428_a9637c2a
touch 20190428_bd912fd3
touch 20190428_c408cf3c
touch 20190428_c7b6ee8a
touch 20190428_ec90884e

They sort correctly with "ls -l", but not with Nautilus.

I haven't tried a more recent version of ubuntu. Should I report this
somewhere else?

[Bug 1820832] Re: [nvidia] [xorg] multiple monitors: limits the framerate of faster 120/144hz monitors to 60hz

2019-04-23 Thread Mitch
The original description specifically mentions both Nvidia and AMD cards
being affected, as the bug was based on the experiences reported by
myself and dreamcat4 in the bug for Mutter capping the FPS to 60.

In fact, you specifically asked me to post my Xorg log file for my AMD
card, which I did a month ago.

[Bug 1728053] Re: Copy to USB is very slow

2018-06-18 Thread Mitch Oldroyd
this is apparently also a problem in Bionic-Beaver. I started a file
copy 7,633 files to a new USB stick (SSD to USB 3.1). The copy started
out like I expected, at a displayed rate of about 345MB/s. By the time,
it reached roughly 1/2 the copy began to slow and before long, it was
down to about 34MB/s.

This is after recovering from a very similar issue Friday (last). Where
in, it slowed even further, down to 1.2MB/s. I did the research over
the weekend, and found reports, very similar to this one, attributing
the issues to the Nautilus FS. I also found that Ubuntu 18.04 chose to
not update Nautilus, but rather stayed with a previous version.

lsb_release -a gives
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
Release:18.04
Codename: bionic

Machine info:
Memory 3.13GeForce GTX 1070 with Max-Q Design/PCIe/SSE2 GiB
Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.80GHz × 8
Graphics: GeForce GTX 1070 with Max-Q Design/PCIe/SSE2
GNOME: 3.28.1
OS type: 64-bit
Disk : 97.9 GB

(500 GB SSD partitioned into 100 for OS, 400 for local storage)

cat /proc/vmstat | egrep "dirty|writeback" yields: (about 2 min after
slow transfer finished)

nr_dirty 48
nr_writeback 0
nr_writeback_temp 0
nr_dirty_threshold 1502867
nr_dirty_background_threshold 750516

On Friday, I did try to use the command line "cp" on a smaller subset of
the file set, with no visual, I cannot say xfer rate, however, it took
quite a while (over 5 minutes) to transfer approximately 1500 2MB files.

Not sure if there is anything more that I can provide. Oh,a colleague
with whom I was sharing these files, was able to upload them (after my
laborious download) onto his ubuntu 18.04 in like 20 seconds or so.

[Bug 1241309] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 has no way to change individual input method settings

2013-11-01 Thread Mitch
I was typing and via the keyboard somehow switched the input from
simplified to traditional. When I switched to English and back to
Chinese it was reset to simplified. Is anyone else aware of how to
switch between simplified and traditional with the keyboard? I was kind
of mashing the keys so I haven't been able to re-create it. I feel like
it had something to do with control, shift and S or maybe .

Here is what I typed when it happened: “Nightly Specials”S應該是大字

As you can see, after the S it was in traditional and I was really
happy, but now I'm back to simplified :-/

[Bug 574296] Re: Gnome theme not applied on session start

2011-01-08 Thread mitch
I had this same issue on my i7 box (no SSD though) in both Ubuntu 10.10
and Linux Mint 10. I was able to fix the issue by following the solution
posted here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-
daemon/+bug/649809 post #68 which adds a short delay to the daemon
loading on startup.

Basically it involves editing /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-settings-
daemon.desktop and changing line 4 to:

Exec= bash -c sleep 2; /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-
daemon

Hope this helps.

[Bug 382703] Re: Home Folder has 3 different names

2011-01-08 Thread mitch
+ 1 for username. Surely even the most naive user could deduce from
common sense that the folder with their username is their 'main' folder.
I know that we're trying to spread Linux to the masses here but we have
to realistic about the type of users that are likely to convert and I
would venture to say that someone who would be confused by that most
likely would never even consider converting from windows and OSX users
are likely familiar with Unix naming conventions so it probably wouldn't
be an issue for them anyway.

[Bug 582253] Re: Apport hook for gedit

2010-08-13 Thread Mitch Towner
Hi Sebastian. I don't believe that it is required to import anything as
all this hook does is attach the non-default gconf data. Please see
https://bugs.staging.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gedit/+bug/614874 for
a bug filed using this hook. I believe that It has all of the
information that is required, unless you want something else added that
I was not told about.

When Nigel approached me to write this hook, I was told that we only
required the non-default gconf data. If we require anything else, please
let me know I will be more than happy to update the hook. Please feel
free to ping me in #ubuntu-bugs if you have any questions mate. Thanks!

[Bug 615886] [NEW] feature request: bring Firefox to front on click link in Thunderbird

2010-08-10 Thread Mitch Claborn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit
Thunderbird 3.0.5
FireFox 3.6.7

Clicking a link in an email in Thunderbird opens the corresponding page
in FireFox, but does not bring the FireFox window to the front. It
should bring the FireFox window to the front.

I understand from Canonical support that this was an intentional change,
but it doesn't match the way I want the system to operate, and I suspect
that I am not alone.

[Bug 614080] Re: Did not notice anything wrong

2010-08-06 Thread Mitch Towner
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Unfortunately, this bug report does not show anything that is
wrong I do really like Linux's WSOL (Working Screen of

If you are unable to reproduce, please change the status to invalid to
close this bug report. Thanks in advance!

[Bug 540691] Re: sound problem

2010-03-18 Thread Mitch Towner
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

[Bug 532951] Re: metacity starts and dies

2010-03-06 Thread Mitch Towner
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This report actually appears to be 3 different/separate
issues I believe they have been reported already. I will address these
issues in the same order that you have reported them.

1. This appears to be a dupe of bug 439392 or possibly bug 434173.
2. This appears to be a graphics card related issue. This can be rectified by
re-installing your graphics card driver.
3. This is a duplicate of bug 532633. This is a design decision.

If the above comments are true, please comment /or close this bug
report. It would be best to please keep separate issues as separate bug
reports in the future. This makes it easier to deal with each issue
individually. Please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs

[Bug 531787] Re: ubuntu software center applet crashes immediately after opening

2010-03-04 Thread Mitch Towner
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 529332] Re: no audio

2010-02-27 Thread Mitch Towner
I am changing this bug task to linux as it is a sound related issue,
not an nautilus issue.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it without more information. Would you
please add the information requested from the Reporting Sound Bugs section of
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems as separate attachments? If you
are running using Jaunty or Karmic, please run the command apport-collect -p
alsa-base 529332.
If you are running Karmic, please read through the following wiki page as it
resolves a lot of common audio problems.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems/KarmicCaveats
Thanks in advance.

** Package changed: nautilus (Ubuntu) = linux (Ubuntu)

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
