[Bug 389857] Re: inhibit applet does not inhibit some user initiated events

I provided a replacement for the inhibit applet ages ago. The
replacement supports both the Gnome Applet API and the App Indicator
API.

[Bug 697241] Re: [natty] G-P-M Applets Missing

2011-01-11 Thread Noel J. Bergman
Actually, the report isn't invalid, as the behavior is a regression.
gnome-power-manager should depend on gnome-panel-bonobo to support the
existing applets or replacement code added to gnome-power-manager.

Actually, I checked the rdepends on gnome-panel-bonobo, and gnome-panel
depends on it. I believe that the problem on my system must have been
due to pre-alpha upgrade of an existing Maverick install. So re-marking
as invalid.

2011-01-10 Thread Noel J. Bergman
The applets are present, but unless gnome-panel-bonobo is installed in
Natty, none of the bonobo applets are available. So the bug report is
invalid, but since we're moving away from those applets, the patch
should still be adopted as the replacement for the old, bonobo-based,
applet.

[Bug 697241] [NEW] [natty] G-P-M Applets Missing

2011-01-04 Thread Noel J. Bergman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

The Gnome Power Manager Applets, e.g. (and specifically) the Inhibit
Applet, are missing from Natty. This is also a known issue for Fedora
14.

From my understanding of the Fedora bug report, it is a packaging issue.
Certainly the code is still present in the G-P-M source repository.

I have written a command-line utility to control the inhibit state,
which I will attach to provide people with a workaround. It could be
grown into a suitable GUI replacement, e.g., for Unity.

[Bug 648283] [NEW] Basero creating incomplete image (.ISO) files

2010-09-26 Thread Noel J. Bergman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

I was testing to see if Brasero 2.31.92 fixed Bug 614522, but when I
made the test burn, Basero only claimed to burn 750MB (see screen
capture) of the ~5GB that should have been burnt, and the actual image
size is shown below (smaller than even just the md5sum file should be),
along with a good burn made using Fedora 11.

  $  ls -l *.iso

[Bug 542300] Re: Missing Menu Entries - Lucid Beta 1

2010-03-20 Thread Noel J. Bergman
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 542343 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/542343

How is this a duplicate of bug 542343, which had to do with corrupt
.desktop entries?

What are you expecting to have under System Tools? The only things I
have under there are non-core, e.g., VMware and Device Manager. nvidia
settings, for example, is under System-Administration. I don't see the
Control Center anywhere in the menus, and I've checked the menu editor
on 3 separate Lucid installs.

[Bug 541019] [NEW] [CRITICAL] Brasero silently loses directories

2010-03-18 Thread Noel J. Bergman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

I can reproduce this with brasero on both Lucid and Karmic. I add a
directory tree to brasero, and when it finishes adding, there are files
silently discarded. The lost directory is:

  converted-to-tar/DRIVE-I\ \(WORK\)/NJB/DEVTECH/2BPORTED/YACL/

which contains files and a subdirectory. A weird thing is that I have a
second, parallel, directory tree:

  recovered-drives/DRIVE-I\ \(WORK\)/NJB/DEVTECH/2BPORTED/YACL/

which appears completely when I drag both to brasero. The primary
difference is that the latter directory contains everything, and the
former (failing) tree contains the same tree structure, but only tar
files converted from older archive formats found in the source tree.

brasero on Karmic works a bit differently than on Lucid. On Karmic,
I'll be asked if I want to add the directory, because it is so far down
in the tree, and that question will be repeated. On Lucid, I am asked
just one. On Karmic, if I had *just* that one tree, it actually works,
but if I add that tree along with its peers, it silently fails. On
Lucid, it fails in all cases.

FWIW, I prefer Karmic's handling, where it offered NEVER, NOT THIS ONE,
JUST THIS ONE, and ALWAYS, rather than NO and ALWAYS. I agree that if I
want the option at all, I'm inclined to chose ALWAYS, but at least
having the options was better than now.

Even if I manually repair the project by dragging the missing directory
into its place in brasero, brasero will silently drop the contents when
burning!

ALL FAILURES ARE SILENT. The image contains over 33,000 files and over
1200 directories. Were it not for the fact that I always store an
md5sum.txt file in the root of the image, and always verify the burn
with it, I would likely not have noticed the missing files until after
the data might have been permanently lost. I CONSIDER THIS CRUCIAL TO
RESOLVE ASAP! Silent data loss is unacceptable.

@Martin, This configured g-p-m to _not_ suspend any more on any lid

back-and-forth here, but as you note, the bug title is does not lock
screen on lid close, not the system does not suspend on lid close.
My entries in comment 51 are exactly what I am using on a clean install

want it to suspend just because I close the lid. I, in fact, *hate*
that feature. Perfectly happy with how karmic works now, with those

Mat,

The beep could be re-enabled by the user if he specifically requires it,
but I've no doubt that by default all beeps should be muted.

In case it wasn't clear, I have no problem with that at all. I only
object(ed) when the system changes my settings after I've made them,
forcing me to re-do them on each reboot (side effect, I believe, of
addressing comment #78). Daniel very quickly fixed that problem, and
I've no issue with how karmic is today, nor with the default being set

[Bug 445674] [NEW] gdm login displays 12 hour (AM/PM) clock -- I want a 24 hour clock

2009-10-07 Thread Noel J. Bergman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Karmic insists on presenting a 12 hour clock in the login screen. I
want a 24 hour clock. System-Administration-Login Screen no longer
has an option for setting a 24 hour clock. If there is an option
elsewhere, I haven't found it.

[Bug 349312] Re: Evolution 2.26 does not support import of outlook .pst

2009-09-27 Thread Noel J. Bergman
@C de-Avillez, thank you!

I have installed from your PPA, and imported e-mail, calendar, contacts,
and tasks using a couple of my PST files. At first glance, it appears
to run OK. There are issues with UI timeouts on large (2GB) files, but
at least the process appears to work. I'll take more time to look at it
next week, with the goal of switching over all 10GB of Outlook content.

substantial content in .PST files and need to migrate it. Just do a

[Bug 349312] Re: Evolution 2.26 does not support import of outlook .pst

2009-09-21 Thread Noel J. Bergman
@Sebastian, I know how Open Source works, and I wasn't personally
addressing you. I do feel that there ought to be a higher priority,
generally, with respect to migrating users from Outlook, the remaining
piece of Office that keeps many users captive to Microsoft. I've had
this discussion with folks from Sun in the past, too, who said that they
had 20,000 reasons to see it happen.

Personally, I have about 10GB of data in an XP VM (for Outlook 2K) to
migrate.

there is command lines tools doing the job as a workaround for those
who really need to do that ...

Which command line tool(s) to use to migrate 10GB of mail, contacts and
calendar? Mind you, if I wanted to use a usine à gaz approach, I could
have done that by now. :-)

 ... until the change lands

I may try using Fedora to do the migration, and then copy the files over
to my Ubuntu environment, and see whether Evolution will support putting
the data on a volume.

I would be happy to sponsor a libpst update if anybody manage to get
it to build though

What needs to be done?

[Bug 412152] Re: gnome-disk-utility nags me too much that my disk is failing

2009-09-11 Thread Noel J. Bergman
There is a patch to fix the bogus reports, and that we should already
have that in Karmic.

The patch is
http://git.0pointer.de/?p=libatasmart.git;a=commitdiff;h=b7f3834654cb05f5a8aae6b2381d548f49d72987.

I have verified that the fix IS in the current Karmic package. So is
anyone STILL seeing this problem?

[Bug 412152] Re: gnome-disk-utility nags me too much that my disk is failing

2009-09-11 Thread Noel J. Bergman
Alan,

Can you see what in the list is claimed as failing? If not, that's a
problem in and of itself -- I hate idiot light reports. Tell the user
WHAT is wrong, not just that something is wrong.

As you note, It should not be the sectors, at least not from
libatasmart4, given the presence of:

+/* We use log2(n_sectors) as a threshold here. We had to pick
+ * something, and this makes a bit of sense, or doesn't it? */
+sector_threshold = u64log2(d-size/512);
+
+if (sectors = sector_threshold) {
+*overall = SK_SMART_OVERALL_BAD_SECTOR_MANY;
+return 0;
+}
+}

and the fact that you don't have any marked as failing. Lennart
Poettering seems to be entirely pragmatic and willing to adjust, so
let's just see if we can find out exactly what is being complained
about, and tweak that too, as necessary.

I don't get errors on either of my 500GB drives, but I'll check my older
SATA drives to see if they have any. That would make it easier for me
to track down.

Alan,

I have a drive here that generates the warning, but it does have some
reallocated sectors, although far below the threshold. Same as the one

As I said to mac_v earlier today, I'll pull the code later this

[Bug 422234] Re: vinagre crashed with signal 5 in vinagre_utils_get_builder()

2009-09-07 Thread Noel J. Bergman
I'm well aware of Karmic's status. Have spent more time running
development builds than release builds for more than two years. And *I*
can (and did) build my own. But I also care and respect all of those
who can't. I think that PulseAudio, Network Manager, Transmission, and
others have the right idea: one (or sometimes more) PPA is built
regularly, people test early and often, and what goes into the main
repository has been better vetted.

Håkan, if you look at the top of this page, you'll see that there are
two listings. Vinagre: VNC client for GNOME, which is marked Fix
Released; and vinagre (Ubuntu), which is marked triaged.

Basically, the bug is already fixed upstream, where development
happens, and we're just waiting for that to filter down to Ubuntu. Why
this hasn't been done by Robert Ancell, who wrote the patch; Emilio
Pozuelo Monfort, who is listed as the current maintainer; or Jonh
Wendell, the primary author, is a mystery to me.

In the meantime, I am attaching a debdiff, in the hopes that it helps
move this process along. This is done as a proper patch, using the
patch system.

tomorrow vinagre 2.27.92 tarball will be released, and it will get
updated into karmic

Good to know. :-)

But in the meantime, for the past week, anyone testing on Karmic had a
broken VNC client with no functionality, unless they fixed it them-self
or installed an alternative. So in my view, either the update should
have been rolled back, or the rather trivial fix put in place.

[Bug 389857] Re: [karmic] inhibit applet not working

2009-08-28 Thread Noel J. Bergman
Scott,

I have

  gnome-power-manager2.27.91-0ubuntu1

and I still have a problem. Here are the specifics:

I am running VMware. I turn on the inhibit applet so that it says
automatic sleep inhibited. The system stays awake while I am working
in VMware, but as soon as I move the mouse outside of the VM, the system
immediately acts as if the entire period had been idle, rather than
ignoring it due to the inhibit applet.

Even without VMware, the applet fails to inhibit the screensaver.

[Bug 43363] Re: network: should list NFS shares too

2009-08-27 Thread Noel J. Bergman
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 24430 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/24430

Still broken, even if I publish the NFS shares via AVAHI, which probably
ought to be the connection. My SAMBA shares are shown, and my SSH
shares (published by AVAHI) are shown, but NOT the NFS shares, despite
being published.

If NFS shares are published via AVAHI, they ought to be shown.
Ironically, NFS shared published by AVAHI do appear on the Mac, just not
on Gnome, q.v., http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=523928
