Actually gedit-common triggers gedit install as well:

```
libgtksourceview-4-common libpeas-1.0-0 libpeas-common python3-gi-cairo
```

Still, isn't it a bit weird, that changing the wallpaper requires a
particular text editor to be installed? Would it be too complicated to
make the gnome-control-center independent of the gedit's schema?

[Bug 1875528] Re: Extra frozen / stuck mouse cursor after auto screen lock / sleep

2020-06-06 Thread Piotr Gajdowski
Experiencing same problem, in most cases displays that go into sleep modus (or
you turn them off and on again) don't remove themselves from the display driver.
But some displays gets removed form the gpu(or xorg, i don't know) display
driver and the re-added.
So basically this happens when you displays are re-arranging cause you added or
removed a display (either manually or automatically by the display itself).

This problem is viewable in multi-monitor setup, where 1 monitor is
programmed to detach himself from the gpu when going to sleep or off,
and the other(s) are just turning the screen black, but stay connected
to the gpu.

When you turn off you (problem) display, you actually see linux re-arranging
windows/applications on the screen(s) that don't detach themselves from the gpu.
Seeing this happen, I came to this conclusion, that some display detach
themselves from the gpu when going to sleep, and therefore linux thinks a
display is being removed and re-arranges everything.

During this re-arrangement process a duplicate cursor is created and
becomes frozen, a new cursor is created and becomes your primary cursor
that behaves normally.

possible fix for this is linux resetting all cursors in xorg/gpu driver
when completing such re-arrangement process.

I have zero understanding of xorg or gpu driver programming, but i do know that
xorg is programmed to be able to have multiple cursors.
So my suspicion is with xorg programming.

I hope this gets fixed, It's really annoying, when you are working and
have tons of apps open, you are required to log out and restart your
workspace, which can be a hasle and time consuming.

[Bug 1797734] Re: slow calculator startup

2019-05-22 Thread Piotr Dąbrowski
2 seconds it way to slow for simple application like this on a system
installed 6 days ago on a quite good machine. Firefox opens way faster.

Up until recently I've been using a HDD (instead SSD) for my system
drive and back then it took around 6-10 seconds to start the calculator
(and it was also slower than Firefox), so I guess 2 vs 6 seconds is just
a scale according to how fast is the hardware. I could upload the trace
from my low-spec personal laptop (last trace comes from my work PC),
where this is also problematic.

2019-05-22 Thread Piotr Dąbrowski
Here's my trace. You can see the first launch takes around 2 seconds.
Second run takes significantly less time. In both cases `/snap/gnome-
calculator/406/bin/desktop-launch` is what takes most of the time during
startup.

Quick spec:
- Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8400 CPU @ 2.80GHz
- Corsair Force MP510 M.2 NVMe SSD

[Bug 1797769] [NEW] LCD backlight brighness reset to maximum after boot / resume / login

2018-10-14 Thread Piotr Kołaczkowski
Public bug reported:

The laptop LCD backlight brightness level is not preserved. The screen
brightness always gets reset to 2-steps below the maximum level after
login or resume from suspend. This is particularly annoying when working
on battery, because after each resume, I have to make screen darker in
order to preserve energy.

It is possible to control brightness by keyboard buttons and by status-
bar slider, so brightness control mostly works. The status-bar slider
behaves a bit erratically when moved, but not sure if it is related.

The problem seems to be not related to kernel version.
The problem existed in 18.04 as well as 18.10.

Hardware: Dell Precision 5520.
Graphics driver: Intel, using integrated GPU.
Nvidia card turned off on boot, no proprietary Nvidia drivers loaded.

[Bug 1735986] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 on Wayland doesn't scale some applications properly on external low DPI display

2017-12-03 Thread Piotr Kołaczkowski
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected artful wayland-session

** Description changed:

  I have a system that was upgraded from 16.04 -> 16.10 -> 17.04 -> 17.10. So
now running on 17.10.
I upgraded to 17.10 because I hoped for better HiDPI scaling support.

My laptop is Dell Precision 5520 with 4k 3840x2160 15" screen, with
Intel graphics (it has nvidia too, but disabled).

Additionally, I have an external Dell U3011 2560x1600 30" display
  connected to it.

When I logged into graphical session (selected the default Ubuntu session), I
confirmed wayland is running by checking loginctl:

  loginctl show-session 2 -p Type
  Type=wayland

With external display connected, display settings show that the high DPI
laptop screen got scaling set automatically to 200%, and the external
low DPI display got scaling set to 100%. So far, looks good - automatic
detection of hi dpi screens did the right thing.

The built-in Ubuntu applications like terminal, file browser or setting
window work fine. When I start e.g. the terminal, it appears first on
the laptop screen - it is scaled properly, then I drag it to the
external screen and once I release the mouse button, the window shrinks
to 2x smaller, so it adapts to lower DPI of that screen. Everything is
sharp and crispy and the sizes are ok.

  Problems:

  * Firefox, Chrome, Chromium, Intellij IDEA all do not scale correctly on
the external screen. Everything is twice too big. When started, they
appear first on the built-in hiDPI screen with the correct size, but
after dragging to the external screen, they remain scaled by 200%.

  * When I enabled dock to be displayed on all screens, the dock icons are
twice too big on the external screen. So, 200% scaling seems to be
applied to the dock on both screens.

  * Sometimes the mouse pointer is twice as large. Sometimes it is twice
too small. I didn't figure out yet when it happens. Sometimes it is only
twice too large when over the desktop background, but ok when over an
application window. This is a very minor issue, but looks funny.

  -
  What I tried so far:

Resetting dconf to factory settings with:
  dconf reset -f /org/gnome/
  did not help.

Then I tried enabling experimental fractional scaling, with 200% / 100%
scales set (I do not really need fractional scaling, but I hoped it
changes how things are rendered and where scaling is applied). This
actually helped for both scaling issues - including the dock scaling
problem. Windows get even properly scaled in the *middle of dragging*
between displays. Everything is the right size with this setting on.
  Really cool.

Unfortunately now the image on the builtin display for the non-native
applications like Firefox, Chrome or Idea is severely blurred. And it is
blurred even if I disconnect the external display. It looks as if it
rendered these apps at half the resolution (I noticed xrandr shows
1920x1080 for that screen, but ubuntu display settings window shows
3840x2160) and then upscaled twice the bitmap to reach higher 4k real
screen resolution. The blur does not happen for native Ubuntu apps like
  terminal.

Unfortunately the blurring effect is much stronger than if I just
manually force the builtin screen to 1920x1080. In this case everything
is a bit lower resolution, but still sharp enough.

- Therefore so far, Ubuntu 17.10 and Wayland did not improve hi dpi
- support for me at all, despite some rumours it should have. I still have
- to switch to lower resolution on the builtin display to get everything
- crisp and the right size.
+ Therefore so far, Ubuntu 17.10 and Wayland did not improve hi dpi support for

[Bug 1573755] Re: compose and dead keys stopped working in gnome terminal

2016-06-05 Thread Piotr P. Karwasz
I believe it is an ibus-daemon bug. I had the problem at least in gnome-
terminal, firefox (but not under Unity), thunderbird. I solved it less
brutally than flushing the whole user DConf database by resetting one
key:

dconf reset /org gnome/desktop/interface/gtk-im-module

which contained the value 'gtk-im-context-simple'.

It worked:

* for gnome-terminal after logging again, restarting the program wasn't enough.
* for Firefox and Thunderbird only after restarting the system. The only user
program that didn't restart after a relog was 'ibus-daemon', hence I believe it
is his bug.

What makes me wonder is why the Compose key worked on Firefox only under
Unity and not GNOME 3. There might be a second bug there.

The buggy behaviour is the same as described in the gnome bug here:

[Bug 1070006] Re: Mobile Broadband Fails to Configure on Ubuntu-Gnome (ZTE MF622)

2013-04-16 Thread piotr zimoch
** Description changed:

The modem (ZTE MF622) is recognised and 'Mobile Broadband' can be
enabled. The network is shown ('3' in the UK) and has signal strength
bars (2 for me). However, the modem doesn't connect.

- Ubuntu Desktop displays a Mobile Broadband Connection dialog/wizard
- which allows me to select and configure my network provider. Ubuntu
- Gnome doesn't - I'm not sure if this is relevant.
-
- Syslog does not show any activity by pppd, whereas it does on Desktop.
- In fact, nothing relevant is shown in syslog after ModemManager shows
- the change of state of the modem from 'enabled' to 'registered'.
-
- ProblemType: Bug
- DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.10
- Package: modemmanager 0.6.0.0.really-0ubuntu1

[Bug 1067110] Re: Weather report can't set unit preferences

2013-02-04 Thread Piotr Materny
There is a woraround for this bug. You have to open dconf-editor and in
the tree org- gnome - Gweather you can change default values for each
of these : temperature, wind, pressure distance.

Hope this helps
Piotr

then restart empathy. Should work until it breaks again.

[Bug 972554] Re: [soundnua]: new capplet does not expose the sound card profile selection

2012-04-27 Thread Piotr Krzyzek
I don't have the same card as the others, though I have the same
problem. I have a Creative CTXFI Titanium and with 12.04 this all
worked just fine (after a few tweaks). I can confirm that in 12.04 I
cannot select the digital surround sound options simply because they do
not exist ... though just Digital Output (S/PDIF) does exist.

Here is a link to the output:

http://pastebin.com/Hs8GbR02

 aplay -l

does list all the surround options (listed in this following pastbin):

http://pastebin.com/7Yzwdk23

Why it lists hundreds of subdevices I don't know, though the important
thing is that digital surround sound is listed.

and the command pacmd list-cards does list all the correct profiles
(see line 47), just none of them are selectable via the GUI:

http://pastebin.com/e6pYv8KZ

[Bug 917302] Re: empathy-chat crashed with SIGSEGV in g_str_hash()

2012-03-31 Thread Piotr Dopart
Crash window appeared during the time when my computer was idle, so there is
no way for me to determine the direct cause - unless it was precisely
that: the window crashed during a long time of inactivity. There is a
chance that sometime during that period empathy tried to reconnect and
failed, causing the mail window to crash. Unfortunately there is a lot
 of maybes here.

[Bug 890026] Re: Custom GNOME panel launcher icons lost upon upgrade to Oneiric

2012-01-09 Thread Piotr Czachur
+1

I'm using gnome classic (no effects) under Oneric too, and I find managing
application launchers in top panel very unfriendly.
1) There is no option to add a launcher icon using mouse-right, no one will
guess that you have to create *.desktop file and drag it to the panel.
2) There is no option to remove such launcher from panel.

Please add right menu to add application launcher and option to remove
it from panel.

Cheers!

What you expected to happen:
I login to Ubuntu, Gnome Classic session (with Compiz effects). I clicked
Places button (or open Nautilus window and choose from right menu). Then I
choose any partition to mount (I have some NTFS and ext4 on my computer, on two
harddrives). Partition should mount in the system and new Nautilus window with
contents should open, so I can browse files. It happening in all Linux system
that I have (for example Debian with Gnome - I click partition name and it
mounting and window opens).

What happened instead:
nothing happened. I clicked all partition one by one, they won't open. I tried
'gksu nautilus', but Root's Nautilus window don't have list with partition
which I can mount, so I cannot click anything.

WARNING: It happening ONLY, when Gparted is running. I just realize it

It is an environment variable problem: while a 'passwd' process run from
a terminal inherits all environment variables (and among them
GNOME_KEYRING_CONTROL and DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS), the 'passwd'
process run from 'gnome-about-me' is given an empty environment.

[Bug 322314] Re: Automatically connect on startup setting confusing - users may expect this to run Empathy on login

2010-05-07 Thread Piotr P. Karwasz
I agree with Liam: a .desktop file should be added to /etc/xdg/autostart
with an AutostartCondition.

However I am not sure whether reusing the same configuration key
(/apps/empathy/autoconnect) would be acceptable.

[Bug 432814] Re: Touchpad: Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty

2010-04-14 Thread Piotr Kęplicz
@Sebastien Bacher

Windows defaults:
- two finger tap, three finger tap: no action (typical version of Synaptics
drivers doesn't make use of these, however Synaptics Gestures Suite - if
provided by the laptop manufacturer - may add support for three finger tap),
- one finger scrolling on side of the touchpad.

MacOS defaults:
- I believe that it can be configured so that two finger tap acts as right
click, but then again Mac mice haven't got a right button anyway,
- two finger scrolling.

Linux defaults *for years* before Karmic:
- two finger tap as middle click, three finger tap as right click,
- one finger scrolling on side of the touchpad,
- I noticed that two finger scrolling is recently on by default, however it is
sometimes hard to properly distinguish between two finger tap and two finger
scroll, so I chose to disable scrolling.

[Bug 144406] Re: some windows do not appear in the window list

2010-04-01 Thread Piotr Bentkowski
BTW, Scilab 5.2.1 seems to work fine, though it's build around Java
graphics as well.

I take it back! On a different machine I had similar issues when running
Scilab 5.2.1 (64-bit Linux version) demos presenting Xcos and Modelica
(Scilab's counterpart of Simulink in Matlab).

I opened main window (Console), then clicked ? Scilab Demonstration. A new
window popped out and then went Xcos Modelica demos Ball on platform (but
can be any other demo from that category). It opened Xcos window with a
Simulink style diagram. Then, in Xcos window, I've clicked Simulation Start.
Scilab compiled the model and when the information about successful compilation
was prompted Xcos window with models diagram disappeared from the GNOME panel.
Also window with demos menu disappeared. They were available through Alt+Tab or
Turbo+Tab. Minimizing windows returned them to the panel.

Scilab 5 is available on licence considered free, so, contrary to Matlab,
source code should be available.

[Bug 144406] Re: some windows do not appear in the window list

2010-03-25 Thread Piotr B
Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) 32-bit with all the current updates
3D-accelerated proprietary graphics driver for ATI cards is on.

$ uname -a
Linux piotr-desktop 2.6.31-20-generic-pae #58-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 12 06:25:51

OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.6.1) (6b16-1.6.1-3ubuntu1)
OpenJDK Server VM (build 14.0-b16, mixed mode)

Problem shows up when running Matlab R2009b 32-bit . When Compiz is
running and more than one Matlab window is opened sometimes one or two
Matlab windows disappear from GNOME panel. They are available through
Alt+Tab or Turbo+Tab. When Compiz is disabled it works OK.

BTW, Scilab 5.2.1 seems to work fine, though it's build around Java
graphics as well.

  Cheers,

[Bug 406429] Re: no sound in totem on ubuntu

2010-03-19 Thread Piotr
It happened to me as well. Details:

Configuration: Ubuntu 9.10, Totem 2.28.2

I slot in DVD, Totem opens correctly, video is OK, but no sound.
Properties report that audio codec is n/a. I have burned this DVD with
MPEG2 sound, and it plays well on standard DVD player as well as on
other platform.

I tried to open the DVD in Nautilius and play directly the VOD file. It
plays with no problmes, codec is recognised, good sound. However, if I
click in nautilius 'open DVD', then the situation is identical as above:
video OK, no sound.

Have not tried yet with commercial DVDs (they usually have Dolby track)
or with PCM codec. If you want me to run some tests pls let me know.

[Bug 501972] Re: messages stored but not displayed

2010-01-24 Thread Piotr
Upgraded to Karmic and tried to replicate the bug for a week, but
nothing.. it seems that it has disappeared. I will try for another week
or so, with a different mix of mails before calling it off. There is
another problem in Karmic - Evolution seems to crash on bulk folder
move, but that's a different story. I have also found that the built-in
spam is rather aggressive, so that a lot of innocent mails end up in the
junk folder..

[Bug 501972] [NEW] messages stored but not displayed

2009-12-31 Thread Piotr
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

In some folders, messages that should be there are not displayed. I have
experienced it in Inbox and some folders I've created. However, when I
look at ./evolution/local... files, those mails are there. I managed to
identify the problem, I think. Within the file, messages are separated
by three empty lines. However, if the first line contains one character
(that looks like a space, but it is not a space), then the rest of the
file is not displayed. I can manually remove this character in the text
editor and everything displays correct. I have also problems in other
folders where messages tend to disappear from the view, but still reside
in respective files. BTW. Two POP3 providers, Evolution 2.26.1, Ubuntu
9.04

I forgot to add that just before the exit attempt the sound stopped
working at all in ekiga (ie I was testing ring tones and one stopped to
playback in the middle so I wanted to restart ekiga to see if it helps)

[Bug 468835] Re: ekiga froze on exit attempt and started to consume 120% cpu

2009-11-01 Thread Piotr Morgwai Kotarbiński
Ok, I can repeat this bug easy: here are the steps:
- open ekiga
- go to preferences - sound events
- attempt to play sound for some event
ekiga will play only less than a second and then will start to consume a lot of
cpu and will not exit without SIGTERM.

I'll provide stdout and strace log in a minute.

when ptraced it behaves a bit different: it plays sound with a lot of

[Bug 467308] [NEW] track information is not displayed correctly sometimes when playing internet radios

2009-10-31 Thread Piotr Morgwai Kotarbiński
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

only radio name is displayed, however window title is changed correctly (see
screenshot 1). Then sometimes when I change to other station the track
information from the previous one is displayed (see screenshot 2). Window title
is changed correctly as before.
Also in general even if track information is displayed correctly it is always
displayed with unreasonable big delay (about 30s) when playing internet streams.

[Bug 465802] [NEW] nautilus is showing my encrypted lvm volume in the side pane

2009-10-30 Thread Piotr Morgwai Kotarbiński
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I've got my root fs on unencrypted /dev/sda1 and /var /home and swap are
logical volumes on an encrypted 140GB lvm volume on /dev/sda5. Generally
everything works fine, but nautilus shows this 140GB volume in the side
pane suggesting that it's not mounted yet and that it can be browsed
(see screenshot). When I click it an error window saying Unable to
mount 140 GB LVM2 Physical Volume Not a mountable file system appears.

It's rather low prio as it does not break anything, but just introduces
some confusion.
