[Bug 93607] Re: Broken URLs in Yelp viewer
Altough i am a veteran on unix like systems, some sort of first directions would be very helpfull (something like `man afterboot` in OpenBSD). This broken help page sure turns away novice linux users. It leaves the feeling of unprofessionallity. Not much work to fix, big effect on gaining acceptance from new users and this is low priority? Enough ranting. I really like Ubuntu. Most ubuntu users are geeks, but not all of them. Propper documentation (especially first steps) should not be underestimated. *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 48876 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/48876 I am the original reporter of Bug #48876. It has been fixed and now it's there again. I guess it is caused by sloppy shell scripting in xinit and the such. Check the following comment in Bug #48876 Matthew Wang wrote on 2006-08-05: (permalink) -- quote -- I encountered this problem in 6.06 today. If you have set 'ls' as an alias with argument '--color' in /etc/profile or $HOME/profile, it will be triggered. The root cause is that, the script /etc/gdm/Xsession will source /etc/profile and $HOME/.profile, then it use ls $1 to read /etc/X11/Xsession.d, the ANSI color control characters in its output will cause the problem. Here's the fix: modify /etc/gdm/Xsession, change line 82 for F in $(ls $1); do to for F in $(/bin/ls $1); do -- quote -- -- export and alias lines in /etc/profile lead to unstartable GNOME session https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/235040 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee (via bug 48876). -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 80438] Re: gedit takes 1 minute to open
ok, this is on edgy and not on every installation. i could locate where the problem is. If the File Browser Pane plugin is installed and activated, gedit will check some files fom the recently used files list (also remote files) on start up, thus delaying it badly. enabling the plugin turns gedit into the slick and lighweight editor i would like to have. [Bug 89256] no focus on location bar after opening new tab
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: epiphany-browser when starting epiphany or opening a new tab, the focus is not in the location bar as known by every other graphical browser (and previous versions of peiphany itself). [Bug 9252] Re: Nautilus reports file ownership incorrectly on sftp:// files
sftp (OpenSSH actually) offers the possibility to chown/chgrp/chmod remote files: sftp help chgrp Available commands: ... chgrp grp pathChange group of file 'path' to 'grp' chmod mode path Change permissions of file 'path' to 'mode' chown own pathChange owner of file 'path' to 'own' ... on a second thought this is (however) tricky. on an NFS share it works fine in gnome, because local and remote uid's and gid's must be in sync for NFS to work properly. for scp/sftp this requirement is often not met (imagine sftp-ing to your web hosting provider). I could see a solution for this problem only, if there would be a way to white/blacklist hosts/networks for gnome. the user of the client would have to tell gnome which hosts/networks are in sync (uid wise). or gnome could try to probe if information of a remote host are available via yp/nis or ldap. the current behavour is save for unknown networks, but it's quiet a PITA if nis/ldap is in use. -- Nautilus reports file ownership incorrectly on sftp:// files https://launchpad.net/bugs/9252 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 81015] not possible to change permission (rwxrwxrwx) on files on sftp coonnections with a different user
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus my local user name is spliffy. when i connect to: ssh://[EMAIL PROTECTED]/home/mng (note the different user) then i will not be possible to change file permissions on remote files, although I would have permissions. what I have done: 1) connected to a remote server as described above 2) right clicked on a file, selected Properties 3) changed to tab Permissions then the owner/group/others' widgets are disabled (grayed out). maybe this is no bug at all an it isn't possible to allow this. mind you, there are many networks using nis/ldap or some other infrastructure to keep the uid/gid's in sync. is it possible to re-enable the permission settings via the gnome configuration ? ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- not possible to change permission (rwxrwxrwx) on files on sftp coonnections with a different user https://launchpad.net/bugs/81015 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 80438] gedit takes 1 minute to open
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gedit since the update to edgy, gedit takes roughly 1 minute to start. I am using mainly remote files (ftp://, ssh:// at most). when i open gedit the first time after logging into my session, i will be prompted to enter the master password for the keyring (mind you, this is for a blank document). I suspect that gedit is then trying to get information on the remote files in the recently used files. This is particularly annoying because I use gedit as the quick, simple editor for doing changes. However, currently I wil lstart up an IDE because it is faster even for simple jobs. ** Affects: gedit (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- gedit takes 1 minute to open https://launchpad.net/bugs/80438 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 48876 *** if your login shell is bash, check if you have a .bashrc file (just in case you are new to gnome, nautilus hides files starting with a dot, use CTRL+H to sho them). altough i haven't checked, the same alias command in a .bashrc file would most probably cause the sameproblem, i guess the gnome-session command (or any associated script) is using ls instead of /bin/ls which causes this to happen. also, if you are using another shell than bash/sh, you might want to look into the man page to see what startup files you shell uses (most probably not .profile).
