[Bug 297979] [NEW] regression: static mutex lock/unlock break strict-aliasing rules

2008-11-14 Thread StevenMcCoy
Public bug reported:

GLib 2.18.2-0ubuntu2 on 8.10 has an issue with strict-aliasing, always
reporting the following:

warning: dereferencing type-punned pointer will break strict-aliasing
rules

This does not occur with same code under 2.16.6-0ubuntu1 in 8.04.

Compile attached code as follows

gcc -o test.o -c -Wall -O2 `pkg-config --cflags glib-2.0` test.c

[Bug 253167] [NEW] Rhythmnbox sort by Album Artist for guest/compilations

2008-07-29 Thread StevenMcCoy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

For guest artists on an album or compilations Apple allows definition of
an album artist and artist for each track. Rhythmnbox only allows
browsing by track artists so many artists appear listed with only one
track.

Example, Red Book by Texas:

1. 036
2. Getaway
3. Can't Resist
4. What About Us
5. Cry
6. Sleep
7. Get Down Tonight
8. Nevermind
9. Bad Weather
10. Master Thief
11. Just Holding On
12. Red Book

The sixth track has artist Texas featuring Paul Buchanan whilst all
others are Texas.

I want to browse by album artist selecting Texas and seeing all 12
tracks on the album, not just the 11 that match.

[Bug 15495] Re: Archive Manager doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an archive is

2008-07-17 Thread StevenMcCoy
Archive has been in the English language since at least 1603:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/archive

Zip isn't even in the dictionary as referring to a collection:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/zip

Zip is only knowledgeable to WinZip users of old. Noting that Windows
XP built in support is labelled Compressed (zipped) Folders. The
litmus test should be whether a new computer user would understand the
terminology zip or archive, and quite clearly they will have no
knowledge of the former and reasonable English education would be aware
of the latter.

Transpose the title if you need further clarification: ZIP Manager
doesn't mean anything if you don't know what a zip is.

[Bug 224658] [NEW] Freeze on Mac Server CALDAV calendars

2008-04-30 Thread StevenMcCoy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Mac OS 10.5 Calendar Server providing calendars via CALDAV, Ubuntu 8.04
desktop upgraded from 7.10.

Trying to access calendars, even trying to delete freezes Evolution.
This also causes the gnome-panel world clock applet to completely lock
up the gnome-panel when clicking on the date.

With a clean slate, adding a calendar succeeds but displays no entries.
Exiting then restarting fails, requiring a killev. The calendar still
does not work, but attempting to delete the calendar causes Evolution to
freeze.

Workaround is to delete the gconf entries and re-login.

[Bug 162795] Re: Cannot rename files with Traditional Chinese in Nautilus

2007-11-16 Thread StevenMcCoy
Testing has shown Nautilus to be very inconsistent with operation.
Sometimes input will work in Chinese and sometimes no input will be
accepted at all. For instance swapping between gedit and nautilius can
sometimes make input work. Sometimes when swapping back and forth
between gedit and nautilus with a F2 rename file box open all the text
input that did not appear will suddenly appear.

I have currently downgraded all boxes to dual-boot Feisty/Gutsy.
Downgrading Nautilus in Gutsy didn't work out too well to test, the
window would just vanish when doing anything.

** Summary changed:

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: nautilus

- Ubuntu 7.10 with locale set to zh_HK.UTF-8.
+ Ubuntu 7.10 with locale set to zh_HK.UTF-8 or zh_TW.UTF-8

Similar to Bug #94841, with Nautilus on the desktop of browsing folders
files can be renamed with the default input method (English). If the
input method is changed to Traditional Chinese / Quick I can no longer
enter or delete any characters using the keyboard. The keyboard still
works with the Nautilus UI, and the mouse can be used to cut and paste
text in the name box. After this has occurred even selecting the
default input method will no longer work, the user has to log out and
log back in again to rename files.

Renaming on the console works fine.

Logging in with English locale and starting up SCIM and entering Chinese
- works fine. Similarly using zh_TW (Taiwan) works fine.

[Bug 162793] Changing login language confuses gconfd

2007-11-14 Thread StevenMcCoy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gconf

With Ubuntu 7.10, login as one user with say zh_HK.UTF-8 then logout and
select en_HK.UTF-8 and log back in. The desktop realises the locale has
changed and suggests renaming for Desktop and other directories, however
gconfd/nautilus is still using the old values. So create a file on the
desktop and it immediately disappears because it's a different folder.

Workaround is to reboot or login on the console and kill the users
gconfd which is still left running even after logout.

The upstream author indicates both are fixed in 2.2 released September

There appears two bugs with the version of link-monitor-applet in Ubuntu
7.10, however this release is not your latest build.

That case is about Help in gnome-about-me, this is about Close in
link-monitor-applet. The Close button works in the following
applications fine:

About Me, gcalctool, Terminal, gedit, Workrave, weather applet, deskbar
applet, and power manager.

The Help in link-monitor-applet works correctly as does the Credits
button on the About dialog box.

[Bug 153301] Re: weather applet won't use automatic-proxy-configuration

2007-10-20 Thread StevenMcCoy
Autoproxy cannot resolve the proxy without a JavaScript engine, that
would be way too bulky to bundle into a library so it needs to be a
service. One service was created but no effort seems to have pushed it
beyond initial release:

http://lwn.net/Articles/206724/

If you want to do the chasing I suggest logging bugs around the APIs,
presumably something like libsoup. The main bug report is bug 123900 at
Gnome about gnome-vfs not actually any library or API.

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/buglist.cgi?query=automatic+proxy

This is hindered as libcurl neon are more popular HTTP client
libraries which grab proxy information from the environment, i.e.
http_proxy, ftp_proxy, and all_proxy, and does not support autoproxy
configuration.

[Bug 153301] Re: weather applet won't use automatic-proxy-configuration

2007-10-17 Thread StevenMcCoy
 3) Change the Manual configuration to point to a valid proxy server but do
not activate it. Keep using the Automatic
 configuration and restart gweather-applet-2.

This seems to be a generic Gnome feature, if an application doesn't
understand automatic proxy it will use the manual http proxy settings
instead. The Gconf configuration backs this up: the preferred proxy
settings are in ~/.gconf/system/proxy and the manual http setting is in
~/.gconf/system/http_proxy.

[Bug 74790] Open/Save dialog doesn't understand NFS root

2006-12-07 Thread StevenMcCoy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libgtk2.0-0

On a HDD install the Gnome/Gtk file open/save dialog shows a File
System link and the path buttons have an arrow to navigate up the tree.
On NFS-root there is no File System and the button which used to have
an arrow now doesn't.

Hopefully this is the right package to assign to.

[Bug 74766] Nautilus cannot start from MacOSX 10.4/X11

2006-12-06 Thread StevenMcCoy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

the command line it terminates with the following messages.

$ nautilus

(nautilus:4162): Gdk-WARNING **: Connection to display localhost:15.0
appears to be untrusted. Pointer and keyboard grabs and inter-client
communication may not work as expected.

(nautilus:4162): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Failed to open session DBUS
connection: Unable to determine the address of the message bus (try 'man
dbus-launch' and 'man dbus-daemon' for help)
Volume monitoring will not work.

(nautilus:4162): Gdk-WARNING **: Coercing GDK_INPUT_ONLY toplevel window to
GDK_INPUT_OUTPUT to work around bug in Xorg server
The program 'nautilus' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAtom (invalid Atom parameter)'.
  (Details: serial 163 error_code 5 request_code 18 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Running from another Ubuntu machine works fine and sees the same DBUS warning
message.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Faxes from a Fuji-Xerox DocuCentre are displayed in black white
correctly in the window but printed as black black via CUPS-PDF and
