[Bug 542113] Re: Language defaults to the GDM screen language on user login, even though the user selects a different language.
This has nothing to do with GDM, this is related to the new way that Ubuntu handles languages in Gnome. At the moment, the system language is set properly by GDM (as can be witnessed through Firefox for example) but ignored inside Gnome, the way languages are handled in Gnome is through a preferences list. The idea behind the preferences list is to allow a fallback option in case an application does not support a user's primary language, it can support a user's secondary language instead. However, this comes at a cost of having to log out and then in again in order to change the primary language and gives a slightly tricky interface for configuration. Also, I do not believe that this reflects how a multi-language environment actually works, for example, my girlfriend and I use the same user account but different languages, it was quite easy with Karmic's system but extremely frustrating now. The use case for this system is good for an African who speaks French as their second language or a dude from Transcaucasia or something that speaks Russian as their second language, but the vast majority of the world either have a primary language that has been fully translated, English as a second language, do not use Ubuntu, or all three. I think the bulk of users will want to be switching between two fully translated languages, since those are the popular ones and the old system was far better for that. Anyway, GDM works flawlessly with respect to language, could someone re- file this? -- Language defaults to the GDM screen language on user login, even though the user selects a different language. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/542113 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Re: [Bug 449702] Re: [time-admin] ntp.ubuntu.com doesn't appear in server list just after you enable NTP
I think it might commit the wrong changes -- when I clicked the sync now button (which is only available when it's set to manual... which I think is a problem...), it didn't do anything until I added the time server. On Wed, Oct 14, 2009 at 5:36 PM, Milan Bouchet-Valat nalimi...@club.frwrote: One of the improvements in 2.28 is that time-admin now detects when NTP was installed. Before that, you had to restart the program, even if it asked automatically you to install NTP. So maybe my fix was only partial. I'll check how we can reload the complete configuration. Anyway, if people don't check what NTP servers are enabled, I guess there's no problem: it will stay enabled on the system configuration. Or does time-admin commit the wrong changes on exit? [Bug 23810] Re: Size of preference dialog too big
Hi, I just noticed this issue on Jaunty. Many laptops, especially 13 models, use 1280x800 screens. The dialog would fit in this resolution, but with Ubuntu's default gnome-panel setup, the panels take up too much vertical space. With the recent proliferation of netbooks, monitor sizes are taking a turn backwards -- for instance, the Eee PC 1000 has a 10 monitor with a resolution of 1024x600, onto which the dialog would certainly not fit. Re: [Bug 228876] Re: Seahorse crashes when revoking a subkey
Apport was enabled. The reason I did not submit this bug with Apport was because it wasn't triggered by this crash. /var/crash was also empty. On Sat, 2008-05-10 at 11:28 +, Chris Coulson wrote: Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. (Change enabled to '1' and then do sudo /etc/init.d/apport restart). Once you have enabled Apprt, try to repeat the crash. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. [Bug 185232] Re: [Hardy] The clock applet no longer uses the more powerful time-admin to change the time
I read the comments on the duplicate of this bug, and I'm disappointed that the developers decided to remove functionality from the applet's settings. Frankly, the new time-setting tool accessible from the panel applet is badly designed and limited in functionality. I much prefer the looks and capabilities of time-admin, and I'm disappointed that it's been moved from the obvious location of the clock's context-menu to the Admin menu. Most computers are connected to the Internet, and thus would benefit from receiving the time automatically from an NTP server, but this functionality is now harder to find. In addition, changing the timezone is now more difficult. Why has the functionality been duplicated? It would make more sense to just get rid of the new tool and simply use the older, better one, rather than giving preferential placement to the new, inferior one. -- [Hardy] The clock applet no longer uses the more powerful time-admin to change the time https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/185232 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-panel in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Hmm, I don't think it transcoded mine to mp3... the file on the iPod seemed to be an m4a. I could decode it with faad, for instance, although it sounded pretty bad. Also, it was the exact same size as the original. However, the iPod wouldn't play it... The thing is, it doesn't really matter what the output format is. The problem here seems to be that Rhythmbox either doesn't think that the iPod can handle AAC files, or it's reencoding the AAC file, both of which are bad things. -- Transferring AAC files to iPod is broken https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/164265 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Re: [Bug 135609] Re: It's hard to seek through fullscreen video
I'm on Feisty, without any compositing enabled, with an nVidia Go5200, although I really don't think that information is pertinent to this bug. I've attached a screenshot to help you understand what i mean by my description. The bottom part of the image shows a portion of the fullscreen toolbar, without the mouse on the handle. The top image shows what happens when the mouse is clicked on the handle and dragged enough to activate the Seek to thing. The display on the right changes, and since it's longer, it causes the slider to resize, and the handle to move right relative to the slider. As you can see on the right of both parts, just dragging the handle one way and then back to where it was would cause this particular 2:05 video to move forward by 2 seconds... it gets much worse on a longer DVD movie. This bug is pretty bad... it seems to be getting worse and worse. It used to only make some of my panels disappear, and not at every boot, but now all of my panels disappear every boot. Also I've noticed that it only happens at the first login. If I log out and back in, the panels appear just fine. -- The gnome panels don't appear when login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109637 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for gnome-panel in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 109637] Re: The gnome panels don't appear when login
OK, now I feel stupid. It turns out it IS beryl. However, if I set beryl --replace --force-aiglx emerald --replace to run on startup, i don't lose my panels. However, if I have beryl-manager (which does that all for me) set to run on startup, i do lose my panels. I've tested switching the window manager in beryl-manager to metacity, and I still lose my panels... so it's really beryl-manager, not beryl. -- The gnome panels don't appear when login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109637 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for gnome-panel in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I don't have anything in .xsession-errors that looks suspicious, although I will attach it for you to look at to be sure, when I get back to my Ubuntu machine.
I discovered that the panels only disappear when beryl-manager is set to start up in SystemPreferencesSessions. However, it doesn't matter what window-manager is set to be used.

One thing I've noticed is that it's only the default panels that don't always show up. My manually added panel always loads. Also, killall gnome-panel makes them load if they haven't loaded. However, I have to run nm-applet manually to get the networking applet to show up after I do that. -- The gnome panels don't appear when login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109637 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for gnome-panel in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
