[Bug 1892647] [NEW] gnome-screensaver can be failed into a locked state.

When the screen is locked, you can freeze the screensaver application by
holding escape and scrolling up to activate the unlock screen with the
mouse.  'authentication error' pops up and the password input {widget?}

I see an issue with commands running with the user's privilege I will
let you know.

[Bug 1246624] Re: Reminders from Google are displayed as “This is an event reminder”

2014-03-25 Thread Caleb Howland
... And by that I mean that version of Evolution you mentioned was
probably part of GNOME 3.10 that didn't make it to the repos in time. My
guess is that with 14.04 this will be fixed, so unless a fix is released
inside the repos befire 14.04's release, this is probably invalid.

Do you have a PPA installed? The GNOME version in 13.10 is 3.8 (which
has the bug). That is not a fix to the problem.

[Bug 1011257] Re: x-gvfs-show option doesn't work

2013-07-18 Thread caleb
I'm experiencing the same problem on Ubunutu 13.04, util-linux
2.20.1-5.1ubuntu8, gnome-diskutility 3.6.1-1ubuntu1

Here's the relevant fstab lines. (all three were generated by the Disks
utility):

# Windows is installed on sda1 (and sda3)
/dev/disk/by-partlabel/Win7 /mnt/Win7 auto
nosuid,nodev,nofail,x-gvfs-show,x-gvfs-name=windows7 0 0
# these are the 2TB hard drives (usually sdb and sdc)
/dev/disk/by-partlabel/TB_ntfs /mnt/TB_ntfs auto
nosuid,nodev,nofail,x-gvfs-show,x-gvfs-name=1TB%20-%20ntfs 0 0
/dev/disk/by-partlabel/TB_ext4 /mnt/TB_ext4 auto
nosuid,nodev,nofail,x-gvfs-show,x-gvfs-name=1TB%20-%20ext4 0 0

What's interesting is that the ntfs partitions in the above lines mount just
fine; the show up in Files browser, etc.
The ext4 partition does not mount, generating the dmesg:
EXT4-fs (sdc1): Unrecognized mount option x-gvfs-show or missing value

[Bug 542113] Re: Language defaults to the GDM screen language on user login, even though the user selects a different language.

2010-05-08 Thread Caleb Moore
This has nothing to do with GDM, this is related to the new way that
Ubuntu handles languages in Gnome.

At the moment, the system language is set properly by GDM (as can be
witnessed through Firefox for example) but ignored inside Gnome, the way
languages are handled in Gnome is through a preferences list. The idea
behind the preferences list is to allow a fallback option in case an
application does not support a user's primary language, it can support a
user's secondary language instead.

However, this comes at a cost of having to log out and then in again in
order to change the primary language and gives a slightly tricky
interface for configuration. Also, I do not believe that this reflects
how a multi-language environment actually works, for example, my
girlfriend and I use the same user account but different languages, it
was quite easy with Karmic's system but extremely frustrating now.

The use case for this system is good for an African who speaks French as
their second language or a dude from Transcaucasia or something that
speaks Russian as their second language, but the vast majority of the
world either have a primary language that has been fully translated,
English as a second language, do not use Ubuntu, or all three. I think
the bulk of users will want to be switching between two fully translated
languages, since those are the popular ones and the old system was far
better for that.

Anyway, GDM works flawlessly with respect to language, could someone re-
file this?

[Bug 524860] Re: starts eating cpu when trying to unlock screen

2010-02-22 Thread Caleb Langeslag
Gathered an strace of gnome-keyring-daemon. I replaced my password with
a placeholder of aaaAa00 (same length and form of the
password used).

total of 32MB in just a few seconds), thus has been truncated to a more
sane size.

[Bug 524860] Re: Locked out at lockscreen

2010-02-20 Thread Caleb Langeslag
As a sidenote, I've been able to get around this by killing the gnome-
screensaver application from a command line in another terminal. However
gnome-keyring-daemon seems to be using nearly 100% CPU power. Trying to
open the Passwords and Encryption Keys dialog (after bypassing the
screensaver password prompt) returns an error of Couldn't communicate
with the key ring daemon in the status bar of the Passwords and
Encryption Keys dialog.

Hopefully this additional information helps with debugging the issue.

Re: [Bug 449702] Re: [time-admin] ntp.ubuntu.com doesn't appear in server list just after you enable NTP

2009-10-14 Thread Caleb
I think it might commit the wrong changes -- when I clicked the sync now
button (which is only available when it's set to manual... which I think is
a problem...), it didn't do anything until I added the time server.

One of the improvements in 2.28 is that time-admin now detects when NTP

partial. I'll check how we can reload the complete configuration.

Anyway, if people don't check what NTP servers are enabled, I guess
there's no problem: it will stay enabled on the system configuration. Or
does time-admin commit the wrong changes on exit? I'll see that too.

[Bug 449710] [NEW] Clock applet's time settings should open time-admin rather than the internal tool

2009-10-12 Thread Caleb
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

The clock applet has its own internal time-setting tool -- however, a
more complete and more user-friendly tool is provided in gnome-system-
tools (time-admin). Because the first place a user is likely to look to
set the system clock is the clock applet, I believe some way to open
time-admin should be present in the clock applet -- either as part of
its context menu or in its preferences window.

[Bug 23810] Re: Size of preference dialog too big

2009-05-04 Thread Caleb
Hi, I just noticed this issue on Jaunty. Many laptops, especially 13
models, use 1280x800 screens. The dialog would fit in this resolution,
but with Ubuntu's default gnome-panel setup, the panels take up too much
vertical space. With the recent proliferation of netbooks, monitor sizes
are taking a turn backwards -- for instance, the Eee PC 1000 has a 10
monitor with a resolution of 1024x600, onto which the dialog would
certainly not fit. It would be nice to see a lighter design for the Evo
preferences window to increase usability on small-screened systems and
to help reduce unnecessary screen real-estate usage.

Re: [Bug 228876] Re: Seahorse crashes when revoking a subkey

2008-05-10 Thread Caleb
Apport was enabled. The reason I did not submit this bug with Apport was
because it wasn't triggered by this crash. /var/crash was also empty.
On Sat, 2008-05-10 at 11:28 +, Chris Coulson wrote:

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with. Please follow these instructions to have
apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the
 automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. (Change enabled to '1' and
then do sudo /etc/init.d/apport restart). Once you have enabled Apprt,
 try to repeat the crash.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash
 report you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
 /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in
a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to
 report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 185232] Re: [Hardy] The clock applet no longer uses the more powerful time-admin to change the time

2008-03-15 Thread Caleb
I read the comments on the duplicate of this bug, and I'm disappointed that the
developers decided to remove functionality from the applet's settings. Frankly,
the new time-setting tool accessible from the panel applet is badly designed
and limited in functionality. I much prefer the looks and capabilities of
time-admin, and I'm disappointed that it's been moved from the obvious location
of the clock's context-menu to the Admin menu. Most computers are connected to
the Internet, and thus would benefit from receiving the time automatically from
an NTP server, but this functionality is now harder to find. In addition,
changing the timezone is now more difficult.
Why has the functionality been duplicated? It would make more sense to just get
rid of the new tool and simply use the older, better one, rather than giving
preferential placement to the new, inferior one.

[Bug 185787] [NEW] [Hardy] gnome-localization-properties is completely broken

2008-01-24 Thread Caleb
Public bug reported:

gnome-localization-properties (SystemPreferencesLanguage and
Location), as installed in Hardy, doesn't actually do anything... the
buttons don't work, and there seems to be a missing list of regions
somewhere. I'm attaching a screenshot of it.

[Bug 185232] [Hardy] The clock applet no longer uses the more powerful time-admin to change the time

2008-01-22 Thread Caleb
Public bug reported:

The clock applet in the panel used to use time-admin to change the time,
which allowed things like configuring NTP synchronization. However, now,
it seems to use some internal tool that isn't as powerful, and doesn't
make as much sense. It still requires PolicyKit authentication, but no
longer allows NTP and timezone configuration.

Re: [Bug 164265] Re: Transferring AAC files to iPod is broken

2007-11-22 Thread Caleb
That's VERY strange... I just tested it with an m4a file, and the
resulting m4a file on the iPod looks like an AAC file in properties, but
doesn't play in anything I can try... however, faad decodes it, but the
results sound HIGHLY distorted.

 using iTunes.

[Bug 164265] Re: Transferring AAC files to iPod is broken

2007-11-21 Thread Caleb
Hmm, I don't think it transcoded mine to mp3... the file on the iPod
seemed to be an m4a. I could decode it with faad, for instance, although
it sounded pretty bad. Also, it was the exact same size as the original.
However, the iPod wouldn't play it... The thing is, it doesn't really
matter what the output format is. The problem here seems to be that
Rhythmbox either doesn't think that the iPod can handle AAC files, or
it's reencoding the AAC file, both of which are bad things.

[Bug 164265] Transferring AAC files to iPod is broken

2007-11-20 Thread Caleb
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

When I attach my iPod and drag an AAC song to it on Rhythmbox, it
transfers very slowly and with high CPU usage, as if it were transcoding
the file. I confirmed that the file transferred to the iPod was
different from the original stored in my music library folder using md5
sums, and also listened to the song on my computer from the iPod's
drive. The song sounded pretty bad. When the iPod was ejected and
disconnected, the songs wouldn't play at all... the total time indicator
showed the correct time for a moment, but it would instantly go to the
next song without playing at all.

[Bug 135609] It's hard to seek through fullscreen video

2007-08-29 Thread Caleb
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

When the seek bar is activated in fullscreen mode, the time/total
display changes to say Seek to time/total. This extra text pushes the
whole seek bar to the left, moving it relative to the mouse position.
The result is that without moving the mouse, you've already seeked
forward in the video. It makes it very hard to accurately move to any
part of the video while in fullscreen mode.

Re: [Bug 135609] Re: It's hard to seek through fullscreen video

2007-08-29 Thread Caleb
I'm on Feisty, without any compositing enabled, with an nVidia Go5200,
although I really don't think that information is pertinent to this bug.

I've attached a screenshot to help you understand what i mean by my
description. The bottom part of the image shows a portion of the
fullscreen toolbar, without the mouse on the handle. The top image shows
what happens when the mouse is clicked on the handle and dragged enough
to activate the Seek to thing. The display on the right changes, and
since it's longer, it causes the slider to resize, and the handle to
move right relative to the slider. As you can see on the right of both
parts, just dragging the handle one way and then back to where it was
would cause this particular 2:05 video to move forward by 2 seconds...
it gets much worse on a longer DVD movie.

OK, now I feel stupid. It turns out it IS beryl. However, if I set beryl
--replace --force-aiglx emerald --replace to run on startup, i don't
lose my panels. However, if I have beryl-manager (which does that all
for me) set to run on startup, i do lose my panels. I've tested
switching the window manager in beryl-manager to metacity, and I still
lose my panels... so it's really beryl-manager, not beryl.
