[Bug 2011251] Re: When focus-mode=mouse is set, gnome-shell gets into state where clicking on window title bars doesn't raise them

2024-09-20 Thread m...@papersolve.com
This only affects X11, and gnome devs only care about Wayland
(specifically, their implementation of Wayland), so I doubt they're
gonna fix this, even though I'd like them to!

[Bug 2075983] Re: Strange behaviors with external displays over Displaylink

2024-08-06 Thread Jesse M Darnley
In the round of testing I did before writing comment #4, I tried both
with the dock and without the dock attached. I also tested with nothing
plugged in at all aside from the direct HDMI connection.

If I can find a mini-DisplayPort cable I have some other hardware I can
test as well to see if maybe it's HDMI or display specific.

Is this the sort of thing we might be able to open a conversation to
implement upstream?

[Bug 2075983] Re: Strange behaviors with external displays over Displaylink

2024-08-05 Thread Jesse M Darnley
I'll test the scaling issue again, as I'm now unable to replicate the
same scenario I had last week when opening this report.

To focus on the suspend issue, I would echo the case that was made to
me: when it comes to what many users will define as expected behavior
they're going to be looking at Windows and macOS as well.

On Windows the default behavior for lid close is to put the laptop into
suspend, even if it is connected to external displays. This behavior has
to be manually overridden. Similarly, on macOS the default behavior on
lid close is also to enter suspend as well. The one notable change is
that for a brief window of time, keyboard and mouse movements will wake
the laptop on the connected displays. All of that said, I think if we
just exposed that setting in the GUI somewhere as you mentioned, that
would be a perfect compromise.

Unfortunately in my case changing that setting has not changed the
behavior I'm seeing. I still get the behavior of the internal display
shutting off but the laptop remaining active. This is happening with the
laptop directly connected via on-board HDMI as well, so my assumption
that it was DisplayLink related may be a red herring.

[Bug 2075983] [NEW] Strange behaviors with external displays over Displaylink

2024-08-02 Thread Jesse M Darnley
Public bug reported:

Release: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
gnome-shell:
  Installed: 46.0-0ubuntu6~24.04.1

Expected behavior (As seen on Windows/macOS):
  * When plugging in external displays, they should be able to scale
independently of the internal display
  * When external displays are active through a display link dock, closing the
laptop lid should invoke suspend

The above behavior would match the behavior seen when displays are
connected directly to the laptop.

Actual behavior:
  * External displays connected through a DisplayLink dock are forced to the
same scaling ratio
  * Closing the laptop lid when external displays are connected through a
display link dock results in the internal display turning off but no sleep
behavior
* This happens regardless of config changes with dconf, upower, or logind

This is primarily a usability issue for laptops with limited ports for
IO and extremely high resolution internal panels.

I just got the bug again (you can see it's not very often)

I just sent the debug.

xwininfo is not working on that zone top left zone. I can't click on it.
I can only click outside this box.

I tried again with "lg", and the text show that it's some notification.
It's some "old" Skype notification.

Stopping Skype do not solve the issue, so I think it's linked with the
notification system.

(Note : My notifications are showned on bottom right of my screen, not
top left)

2024-04-04 Thread Filip M
This one really affects my productivity. It's not only terminal it's also slack
and some other apps.
Looking forward to @Daniel's PPA.
This also raises a question of testing upstream packages by Ubuntu team, as
clearly this wasn't tested in all possible usage cases. I understand not
everything can be tested in depth, but a bug of this magnitude needs to be
triaged ASAP and not in weeks time frame. It's bad for enterprise users, and
it's bad for all the newcomers. We decade old Ubuntu users are kinda used to
this situations, not happy but used to it.

[Bug 2040453] Re: Gnome 45 crash on restart in X11 session [Window manager error: Another compositing manager is already running on screen 0 on display “:0”]

2023-11-13 Thread m...@papersolve.com
I tested this with the very small patch indicated in #1 and it worked.

I did
"apt-src install mutter"
applied the patch.txt file with "patch -p1 < patch.txt"
"apt-src build mutter"
it fails all the tests but apparently this is expected, so i just went into the
obj directory and did "sudo ninja install" and it replaced all the versions
from the original .deb package. I logged out and back in, and then I was able
to restart gnome-shell (alt+f2 and r) while I still had windows open.

Their discussions about this issue seem to have gotten bogged down in
minutiae of what other bugs are related, does some other bigger patch
fix those bugs, no one tested it, etc. So I think it might be a good
idea to carry this small patch for now, and hopefully by the time it
starts conflicting it will no longer be necessary because it will be
fixed some other way. :)

2023-11-02 Thread m...@papersolve.com
This bug is definitely important to me, being able to restart GNOME
Shell after it locks up, crashes, or updating an extension, _without_
losing any of my work or having to restart a large amount of open
programs, is one of the main reasons I still run it on X11. Luckily I
was testing 23.10 in a VM while working on porting an extension and so
haven't updated my main machine yet. But I won't be doing that until
this is fixed. There is a patch on their gitlab but they have to test
it? It's relatively simple so we could all test a PPA with the change.

Hmm... unfortunately upgrading (both gnome-shell and mutter) to 44.1 did

Also hitting the weird black bar issue that I didn't see under 44.0

certainly has its problems but I was getting it in 43.x too and even
before that and it's not causing hangs or crashes). Intel i915 kernel
driver and modesetting with X11.

The message is coming from gnome-shell, so I assume if you won't get it
if you run a different DE - but are other DEs also unstable or are they
fine?

this should be fixed when ubuntu upgrades to gnome 44.1 which will
hopefully be soon! memory leak bugs that were fixed are also affecting

[Bug 1993907] Re: nautilus freezes randomly

Same happened now to me. I have also caught this error:

ERROR:../src/nautilus-file.c:610:nautilus_file_new_from_filename: assertion
failed: (filename[0] != '\0')
Bail out! ERROR:../src/nautilus-file.c:610:nautilus_file_new_from_filename:

It crashes right after launching the Nautilus. As if no files are
present.

This fixed it. Search/Filter now works fine in Nautilus. I hit another

find any files and crashed. Obviously an issue with tracker.

[Bug 1993907] Re: nautilus freezes randomly

2022-10-25 Thread Filip M
I can confirm this bug. In my case Nautilus automatically freezes if I
use the search in Nautilus or if I search for files in overview. I
haven’t been able to catch the output or why it freezes. I have upgraded
from 22.04 and previously from 21.10. As a heavy user of Nautilus for my
work this is a bit of a blocker at some times and reduces productivity,
especially because I can’t search or filter files.

[Bug 1993594] [NEW] Scrolling in a view with many files is broken

2022-10-19 Thread Thomas M Steenholdt
Public bug reported:

Scrolling up and down in a Files window, in a directory with many files,
the scrolling is erratic and seems to often jump to the bottom of the
view.

It happens only when scrolling while hovering the actual files (eg.
using the mouse wheel). If hovering the scrollbar instead, there are no
problems.

The problem is bad enough, it's basically useless to get things done.

Problem happens both in List View and Grid View

[Bug 1989067] Re: gnome-control-center Segmentation fault (core dumped)

2022-09-09 Thread Vito M
I tried reinstalling both and rebooting but no luck, also, sometimes the
settings just work, but when i close the window and try opening it
again, it doesn't open anymore. I have no idea what causes this.

I still tried disabling the rounded window corners even though you said
it was probably another problem, and yeah it didn't work.

[Bug 1989067] [NEW] gnome-control-center Segmentation fault (core dumped)

2022-09-08 Thread Vito M
Public bug reported:

When i try to open the settings, i see the loading cursor but noting
opens, in the system monitor gnome control center appears briefly but
quickly disappears. When i try to run it in the terminal using `gnome-
control-center` it returns "Segmentation fault (core dumped)", same with
`gnome-control-center display` or `gnome-control-center --version` which
is why i could only specify the gnome-shell version.

I have tried:
`sudo apt update; sudo apt dist-upgrade`,
`sudo apt install --reinstall gnome-control-center`,
`gsettings reset-recursively org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings` and system
restart (this worked temporarily like 3 times but is no longer effective),
`gsettings reset org.gnome.ControlCenter last-panel`
`dconf reset -f /org/gnome/control-center/`

When i run `sudo gnome-control-center` i can briefly see the settings window
and get this warning after it crashes almost immediately:
(gnome-control-center:8869): dconf-WARNING **: 09:19:37.256: failed to commit

[Bug 1987076] Re: Mouse cannot control windows after suspend and display change

2022-08-22 Thread Thomas M Steenholdt
Thanks for the directions...

It's not that hard to reproduce here, I just have to move between places
(or I could bring my other monitor closer, for more intense
troubleshooting if need be). But it just happened...

There are no recent crashes and nothing reported by whoopsie. The
requested files are attached.

[Bug 1987076] [NEW] Mouse cannot control windows after suspend and display change

2022-08-19 Thread Thomas M Steenholdt
Public bug reported:

My setup is this:

Ubuntu: 22.04.1 LTS (Vanilla Gnome session on Wayland)
Laptop: Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 2a (AMD).
Display: Lenovo T34w-20, connected via USB-C

The problem started with upgrade to 22.04
I have had the same exact problem with my previous laptop, a ThinkPad T14s.
Both of these are AMD laptops, but I had no problem on 21.10.

Way I can usually reproduce (always?)

1. Suspend my laptop by yanking out the USB-C cable.
2. Resume the laptop by connecting a different monitor (same make and model,
but not the same physical one) and hit the keyboard a few times.

Note: Resuming on the same physical display does not seem to result in
the same problem.

After this, I can no longer control the Windows on my desktop. The mouse
cursor is active, but moves behind the open windows, and mouse click is
not registered (at least not in a way that is useful).

I can navigate the windows and use the applications, using the keyboard.

Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get to GDM, the mouse works fine. Going back the the real
session, mouse is still "broken".

Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get to a TTY, and going back to the original session,
mouse is still "broken".

Only way I have found to reliably restore functionality is a reboot
(which I have been doing a lot of the last few months).

Please let me know what else I can provide you with, in order to get
this fixed. :)

It doesn't freeze. The primary monitor is connected to the RX 580, and
2nd monitor is connected to the motherboard. If I unplug the 2nd monitor
thats using i915 there is no crash. Suspend and switching to TTY's work
if I unplug the 2nd monitor.

Are you sure your receiving reports? Are you talking about that popup
that that says Ubuntu has encountered and error and do you want to send
an error report or something? That doesn't happen.

I'm still crashing with the exact same issue with 42.0-2ubuntu1. If i

crashing but obviously it isn't ideal.

[Bug 1918127] [NEW] gnome-shell crash when using panel

Public bug reported:

Whenever I perform an action in the Gnome Panel (Activate a VPN has 100%
failure-rate, but I have seen it when clearing notifications and other
things too), the entire session crashes and I'm back at login.

I'm running gnome-session on Hirsute.

journalctl /usr/bin/gnome-shell shows the following just before the
crash:

Mar 08 07:02:40 localhost gnome-shell[67382]: **

[Bug 1899206] Re: Tweaktool Keyboard “Additional Layout Options” not persisting on USB keyboard unplug/reconnect

2020-10-14 Thread M Alsharif
@westonhunter: I use gnome tweasks to swap the left Win with left Ctrl
on my Apple keyboard. To clarify, that setting is lost even after I type
in my password and get back into the desktop. As a temporary solution, I
set "blank screen delay" to never and disabled "automatic screen lock",
so I don't have to reset the gnome session everytime my screen goes
blank.

Do you use Apple Keyboard? I am not sure if this behaviour have
something to do with that. I should also mention that I use Apple Magic
Mouse II and noticed that "Natural Scrolling" does not work when the
mouse is reconnected or the system is restarted. So I would have to
reset the gnome session for the "Natural Scrolling" to work. All these
settings were working as expected before I installed the ubuntu update
earlier this week.

2020-10-14 Thread M Alsharif
This bug not only happens when I unplug my Apple magic keyboard, but
also after I unlock the screen when it has been locked for a short
period. Imagine having to restart the Gnome session everytime you unlock
the screen so the customized settings are applied. This a new behaviour
related to the latest updates.

[Bug 1899329] [NEW] symbol U+240e seems to misrepresent the `Shift Out' character by `SS' instead of `SO'

2020-10-11 Thread m
Public bug reported:

Hallo,

A similar bug has been described (and repaired) earlier. See

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fonts-freefont/+bug/1070669.

I first encountered this typographical error on the website of Wikipedia
(using the Firefox web browser)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C0_and_C1_control_codes

when looking at the table representing ASCII control characters.

U+240e ␎ Shift Out should probably be represented by `SO' and not `SS'.
See for reference (as in the report referred to above) the following
document on the Unicode website

http://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U2400.pdf.

This typographical error also seems to appear in other programs such as
Libre Office Calc, the xfc4-terminal, chromium-browser. I am guessing it
is visible in most, and possibly in all programs.

Kind regards,
Michael

[Bug 1877820] Re: Changing Icon Doesn't Apply for Bookmarks Icon in Nautilus

2020-05-18 Thread Tobi M.
Hello,
Sorry for my late information update on the problem.

Distros where i experience the bug: zorin 15.2, ubuntu 20.04 lates
nautilus (written on 15.05.2020).

The Bug is about the Icons display in the file manager Sidebar. For my example
in the Bookmarks.
Reproducing:

Right-clicking an folder in the filemanager or in the sidebar of the
filemanager -> Properties -> Clicking on the Icon and changing the icon, will
change the icon in the filemanager main window but the sidebar stays unaffected.
Nemo for example changes the icon in the Sidebar. I would love to have this in
nautlius to give some of my directories a visual clue. I hope that explanation
will help.

Kind regards,
Tobi

[Bug 1879053] [NEW] Fractional Upscaling is descaling Certain Apps

2020-05-16 Thread Tobi M.
Public bug reported:

1) Description: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
Release:20.04
2) wine-development:
  Installed: 5.5-3ubuntu1
  Candidate: 5.5-3ubuntu1
Same goes for wine stable 5.0.
Other Packages foxit 2.4.4.xx, Notepad v7.8.6

3) I'm using a relatively small QHD Display. The Fractional Scaling
Feature is really something I've looked forward to and I'm super
grateful that it has been implemented. With my setup my life gets easier
when having a little zoom but still have a good amount of pixels and
nice sharpness on my workspace :D

4) With some apps the fractional scaling has an opposite effect. For
example wine apps and foxit reader appear tiny with fractional scaling
turned on (I'm using 125%) and the apps shrink compared to 100%.

Is this the right place to report the bug or do i need to make a
bugreport for every specific app?

Kind regards,
Tobi

  1) Description: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
  Release: 20.04

- Installed: 5.5-3ubuntu1
- Candidate: 5.5-3ubuntu1

Same goes for wine stable 5.0.
Other Packages foxit 2.4.4.xx, Notepad v7.8.6

  3) I'm using a relatively small QHD Display. The Fractional Scaling
Feature is really something I've looked forward to and I'm super
grateful that it has been implemented. With my setup my life gets easier
when having a little zoom but still have a good amount of pixels and
nice sharpness on my workspace :D

  4) With some apps the fractional scaling has an opposite effect. For
- example the apps named above appear tiny with fractional scaling turned
- on (I'm using 125%) and the apps shrink compared to 100%.
+ example wine apps and foxit reader appear tiny with fractional scaling

[Bug 1848534] Re: [Microsoft Hyper-V guest] System shows graphic artifacts for a moment, then text cursor for about minute and then starts

2020-04-25 Thread M
Honestly speaking two notes:

1. forget Ubuntu 19.10 -> there is LTS 20.04

2. after ca. 5 or 6 months Microsoft has not updated firmware for my CPU
in standard Windows Update packages and because of it I'm still not
interested in using HyperV (it's interfering with driver updating
microcode for me) -> Sorry

[Bug 1852183] Re: [X11] copy/paste (clipboard) is broken in Ubuntu 19.10

2019-11-20 Thread Thomas M Steenholdt
On a fully updated Ubuntu 19.10, I feel most of my problems occur, when
copying from a Wayland application, and pasting to an XWindow
application. Most of the time, that doesn't work at all.

As an example. Running my Firefox as a native Wayland application, I am
experiencing problems copying a URL and pasting it into Chrome.

[Bug 1844809] Re: clicking desktop notifications to bring up linked up works intermittently in 19.10?

2019-10-18 Thread m...@papersolve.com
If it is related to that - you should do
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences focus-new-windows 'strict'

(see
https://major.io/2015/07/06/allow-new-windows-to-steal-focus-in-gnome-3/
)

I'm here because I type in notification bubbles themselves, and since
gnome 3.34 these notifications do not have focus when I bring them up, I
have to explicitly click inside them (which doesn't always work).

[Bug 1798640] Re: TimedLogin in gdm3 crashes everything

2018-10-25 Thread Bernhard M
I created a logfile of the failure as requested.

I saw that it is perhaps a timing issue, because one time (out of
perhaps 20 tries) today it seamed to work correctly.

** Attachment added: "journalctl.log"
